Covid-19 Quarantine Brings Changes to the School Year

Students Make Switch to Distance Learning Noelle Albright Being away from the NDA environment has been a difficult change, to say the least.

As students and teachers alike can attest, distance learning has been a tough adjustment. Students are dealing with the loss of face-to-face contact, oftentimes adding more difficulty to their learning.

Exams for the year have been cancelled, which does ease a bit of the burden, but students must also make a conscious effort to retain the information they have learned this year.

“My distance learning time has been a bit of a struggle. I’m a very visual learner and not having my work or learning tools right in front of me, and not having my teacher there was really difficult,” senior Hannah Christ said.

Some difficulty in distance learning lies within the material.

Subjects such as English, sciences, foreign languages and more can have a heightened sense of difficulty due to what students are learning. Typically, the higher level the subject, the more challenging the class is. Turning these subjects into online classes can be a struggle for both teachers and students, with students less able to comprehend some materials while not in the classroom, and teachers attempting to find more learnable ways to teach the curriculum.

"Overall, I would say that distance learning has been going well, but I would much rather be teaching my classes in person. The best way to teach and learn is with face-to-face interaction. I have done a few Zoom meetings with my classes, but it is simply not the same. I look forward to the time when we are able to return to NDA," history teacher Mr. Casey Feldstein said.

In addition to the academic aspect, there is also a lack of social gatherings and meetups, and rightfully so, due to social distancing restrictions.

However, these circumstances can also be very stressful since many are not able to see family members or friends, but social distancing does not mean one must be isolated. Lack of face-to-face connection can actually increase social interaction through social media apps.

portance of social interaction. I’m generally introverted, except for when I’m with my friends, so I thought I would be fine in quarantine. Instead, it’s kicked up all of my depression and anxiety because of not being able to go anywhere or be around people other than my family,” junior Marisa Mack said.

Many teachers have children at home and are now dealing with the additional pressures of taking care of them and teaching them while they simultaneously teach their own students.

“First of all, working from home has been a blessing as I am able to be with my children all day. I am able to witness milestones, like my youngest crawl for the first time. I'm learning more about each one of my children as we spend more time together,” art teacher Mrs. Nicole Mettler said.

“However, I've had to be very self disciplined as to when I work and when I don't. Personally, if I multitask too many items at once, I become extremely overwhelmed, and I get cranky! So, I work when my children nap or go to bed,” she said.

Teachers are missing the classroom just as much as students are, and they must also adapt to the new norms.

“I miss my students so much that it hurts. I worry about them constantly. At school, you can get a feel for who might be suffering and reach out to help. I miss the little interactions with students before class or in the hall,” music teacher Mrs. Amy Johns said.

Self-Care Helps Girls to Destress Kaitlin Shiple Staying at home all the time because of a global pandemic is stressful, and many are trying to find a way to cope with the challenging circumstances.

Destressing is not always easy, especially now. A few quick ideas to try out are breathing exercises, journaling, or going for walks. Calling friends and family to talk with someone not living in the same house could also be beneficial.

Meditation, which is normally recommended, could not only be used to help with getting rid of stress, but for taking up time in your day.

According to psychologist Robbie Maller Hartman, PhD, a Chicago health and wellness coach, research suggests daily meditation may alter the brain’s neural pathways, making one more resilient to stress.

Another tip is having a set schedule for your day to help maintain motivation with school work.

“I make sure I wear an outfit as if I was going out every day, eating meals and snacks, and working out,” sophomore Isabell Smith said. “I turn my phone off,

do school for 45 minutes, and then have a 15 minute break and an hour break for lunch.”

Because of all of this time at home, it is important to have a clean and safe home environment. Having a clean area to work at home will help eliminate distractions during the moments that really need attention.

Self-care should also be considered during this time. Taking time to make sure you are in the best condition you can be in matters.

“Everything that goes under the umbrella of ‘self-care’ is essential right now,” Dr. Harriet Lerner, a clinical psychologist who has written many books on family, feminist theory and therapy said.

Keeping up with your faith could also prove to be a useful way to deal with stress.

“My basic motivation has been hope and prayer. I’ve been growing closer to God through this time as all of the everyday distractions I used to have are now all gone” junior Maria Evola said.

Social Media Allows Girls to Reach Out During Quarantine Kaitlin Shiple Since school has been cancelled for the rest of the year, girls have been finding ways using social media to stay connected with the school community.

Seniors Emilyn Lagger and Jayna Lonsway have both made Instagram pages that make a positive impact. Emilyn started the NDA Denim Day page for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Jayna created the NDA Decision Day page for the Class of 2020 to display which college and major seniors have chosen.

Denim Day started after the Italian Supreme Court chose not to convict a man of a sexual assault charge because the victim was wearing jeans, which the Court believed could have only been taken off by both parties, implying consent.

“Typically Denim Day is celebrated at school, but, of course, things are different this year. I'm glad I have been able to run the account as it has allowed me to devote more time to researching Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” Emilyn said.

“Participating in Denim Day makes it easier to show your solidarity while opening doors for conversation.”

Emilyn’s account has reached girls who are not even a part of the NDA community.

Jayna got the idea for the Decision Day page from a school in Indiana that had made an account for their seniors, and she thought it would be appropriate for NDA’s seniors.

“I just thought it was a really neat idea since we wouldn’t be able to show off our college decisions at school,” she said.

Jayna is also a member of the Senior Class Student Council. “We wanted to come up with some ways to keep our class united during these hard times, so this was something we discussed,” Jayna said. She added the group is working on other activities for the class as they finish their senior year.

The NDA Online Decision Day page has posted 89 girls, all featuring their pictures, the college’s name and logo, and major.

Between celebrating Denim Day and Decision Day, the community has brought the NDA community together in a new way.

Covid-19: How Safe Is Safe?

It’s Time to Go Crosstalk It’s Time to Stay Regan Carnes Although difficult for the economy, it is best for states to stay closed so that cases of COVID-19 do not increase.

COVID-19 has already taken its toll on the population.

Globally the number of deaths has passed 270,000, according to the World Health Organization. Not only have deaths increased, but they have increased at an exponential speed.

For these reasons, social distancing began. So far, it has been successful. The curve has flattened and deaths from the virus look like they are peaking.

This success makes it seem like it is time to reopen nonessential businesses, but that is not the case. It could be devastating if more businesses open. If they open too soon, we could undo everything we have already done.

For example, several Asian countries such as Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong had initial success in flattening the curve by social distancing. But once they reopened unnecessary businesses, there were new surges of COVID-19 cases.

Reopening nonessential businesses will inevitably result in less social distancing. This will increase cases of the virus, which will ultimately result in an increase in deaths.

With less social distancing, those at high risk of dying from the virus will be in danger. Even if they stay quarantined, there will be a higher chance that they contract the virus through family members.

Even with the shutdown, we have access to locations such as grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations. True, the economy will suffer. However, decreasing deaths from COVID-19 is more important and the government should support those out of work.

It may be frustrating being stuck inside the house all day, missing school, sports, and our friends. But it is safest and smartest to keep businesses closed so that less people die from this pandemic. Eventually, the economy will be able to reopen, and these difficult weeks will be worth it.

Mary K. Grzybowski Though it may not seem like a pressing issue amidst the reports of overwhelmed hospitals and sickness, the functioning of the economy is essential to the present and future wellbeing of the country. It may seem insensitive, but government officials and businesses need to think about the trade-off between the risks and benefits of opening parts of the economy.

It may seem like a good idea to wait for things to get better, but there will never be a perfect time in the near future to start opening up the economy: a time when we have enough testing kits, hospitals are no longer overwhelmed, and the virus is declining. But with rising unemployment rates and plummeting stocks, many are feeling a sense of urgency.

Opening the economy is not as drastic an action as it sounds.

It is likely that the economy will open in gradual waves, differing between industries and regions. Many experts believe it will start with construction and manufacturing industries, which can more easily manage strict distancing and hygiene regulations because of their reliance on automation.

The last to open will be businesses that rely on human contact. Though the economy still won’t be what it was before with limited businesses open, it will still provide needed jobs and income for those suffering from unemployment.

Second, quarantining should not be one size fits all. Many are considering the extremely reduced rates of infection among young people as a possible warrant to changing policies about lockdown in less affected areas. Similarly, regions that have formed natural heightened immunity after being infected will open before those who caught it later in the year.

And, though cities are dealing with the virus in full force, sparsely populated rural areas could possibly continue working.

There are many factors to consider in opening up the economy, but if done carefully and gradually with a plan, it will help people and give the country a necessary financial boost.

Cookie Delivery Takes Wrong Turn Noelle Albright

I’m a Girl Scout. I sell Girl Scout cookies every year at school. This year, I sold over 400 boxes of cookies to NDA girls. I would get the coveted mini disco ball and butterfly toothbrush case as my prizes.

Sounds great, right?

Wrong. After we were suddenly quarantined, I was stuck with over 300 boxes of undelivered cookies in my living room. What was I supposed to do now that I couldn’t bring them to school?

I made a map of all the addresses I had to deliver to. Girls who lived in Dundee, Oregon, Sylvania, Maumee, Bowling Green and everywhere in between. I turned my Jeep Liberty into a cookie mobile and set off on the road, finding myself in pretty much every corner of Toledo.

As one might predict, this plan got me stuck in some pretty odd and awkward situations.

While driving around half-lost in Sylvania, I accidentally crashed a happy birthday carline for a woman who was celebrating her 80th birthday.

I also made eye contact with an angry Husky who was relieving himself on a patch of grass in Holland. I locked myself out of my car with my phone, wallet and keys inside in a strange neighborhood.

I accidentally almost hit not one but two golf carts in Stone Oak. And my personal favorite was getting stuck on the Glass City Skyway... in the middle of a hailstorm.

There were some fun moments, but honestly? I don’t know if I’d wish cookie delivery on my worst enemy.

Media Makes Time at Home More Fun Chelsea Fall

The Corona Virus has made some changes in the way girls spend their days. The stay-at-home order has given many a lot of extra time that they don’t usually have, and now they are looking for new ways to pass the time without leaving their homes.

After most finished getting ready for online school and work, then they needed to find more ways to spend their time. TV and books seem to be the best form of entertainment to pass the time and to have fun while home with their families.

Many girls have been reading old books that they have in their house from when they were kids. Books are an easy way to stay occupied and to focus on something better than being at home.

“I have been rereading the Harry Potter series because they take a long time to read, and they were my favorite when I was little,” sophomore Grace Sanford said.

Others have been watching their favorite shows on Netflix and finishing new shows that they started.

“I’ve been watching All American to pass my time,” junior Samantha Heckman said.

Others have been bored during their time and watching TV is one of the easiest ways to pass time.

“I’ve been watching All American and Westside, which are really good,” freshman Rosi Thaman said.

Rewatching their favorite shows and finding new shows to talk about with friends is a good way to stay in touch and stay connected.

During these times books and shows are good ways to pass time, although these are not the only things options.

“I’ve been journaling about my time during Quarantine and I’ve been on FaceTime and Houseparty with my friends. I've also been watching a lot Disney+,” senior Mary Saine said.

Whether reading, watching or writing, girls have been trying to stay connected with their friends.

Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Class President Reach Out to Eagles Lauren Dionyssiou Valedictorian: Aylia Naqvi “I would tell underclassmen to always focus on what is important to them.

Although it may seem like you need to divert all your attention to your grades and extracurriculars at school, you can still enjoy yourself while doing these things.

Cherish every moment you have because life is too short and try not to overwhelm yourself.

The best pieces of advice I have ever received are from my parents. They have always taught me I am capable of achieving anything I put my mind to and also to never sacrifice my happiness for unimportant things. I believe that living by these sayings helps put a lot of things in perspective. We have to make sure we are happy with whatever we pursue.”

Salutatorian: Megan Ohlinger

“My main advice to the girls of NDA is to build a relationship with God. Once you find God, you will begin to see how special the world and all of the people in the world are.

It's then when your strength, drive, and passion will kick in, and you will realize who you are destined to be.

Be grateful and take full advantage of the opportunity to go to NDA. Finally, I would just tell every girl that you are loved by God and by so many people. My hope is that every student finds true happiness.

As for school advice, I would say work hard, and don't be afraid to ask peers for help.”

Class President: Jennifer Ngo “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this school year, it's to never take anything for granted.

I would tell the next president to lead with passion, keep planning new things and make this the best school year you can for your classmates because it’s going to be the most memorable one and it’ll be over before you know it.

I’m going to miss seeing the senior class and being in their presence every day. Being with this class for the past four years has made me feel so grateful and loved.

Lastly, I ask you to put behind the pain we have been through for the past few months. Put down all the loss for a moment and remember the good. Corona affecting our end-of-the-year celebrations and activities is just another obstacle that we can conquer together.”

Senior Vista Staffers Take Their Turns to Offer Advice Chloe Kozal Dear Freshmen, Sophomore year was one of my favorite years, and I hope that it is a great one for you, too! One of the best things about my sophomore year was I really focused on spending time with people in the grades above me. Don’t be afraid to make friends in other grades because they will graduate before you— make friends in other grades because they will graduate before you. They’ve gone through similar situations as you have at NDA and can help you along the way and really be some of your best friends.

My second piece of advice is don’t be afraid to try a new club, subject or a sport! If you don’t like it, you can move on, but if you do like it, you still have two years to enjoy it.

My third piece of advice is don’t be afraid to drop, add or move up in a class!

Your counselors are there to make sure your schedule isn’t too demanding. If you’re struggling in a class, even with help, dropping or moving to college prep classes might be worth considering. You might find that moving classes helped you prepare even more for the future.

Chloe Kozal Dear Sophomores, My advice to you is every day on the announcements they say “Make it a great day or not; the choice is yours,” and I think that really sums up the attitude of junior year.

Junior year can be the most stressful year, or it can be the year that you become closer to your classmates, have new experiences, and try some challenging classes.

You can’t control how your friends are feeling, but you can control how you are feeling.

If you feel the people you hang out with are negative, try to hang out with others that promote positivity.

That doesn’t mean you should avoid those friends, just be mindful of how much your friends can influence your attitude and mindset.

Avoid all-nighters and do only what you can manage. Truly, it’s not cool to get only 2 hours of sleep! Everyone has only 24 hours in a day, even Beyoncé!

Finally, practice self care. Pack snacks for school. Do what you need to do for yourself and try different things to help bring you peace of mind.

Lauren Dionyssiou Dear Juniors, Congratulations!! You girls are about to be the senior class, the oldest girls in the school and everyone is going to look up to you!

With that said, the first piece of advice I have to offer you is to take in every moment, every pep rally, every sporting event, every extracurricular, and every moment you can spend with your friends.

Make as many memories as possible, and take a lot of pictures so that you always have them to look back on.

I know it can be very easy to get stressed out during the school year, especially when it comes to making college decisions and having to think about your future.

While I can’t say that it is an easy process, I can tell you that things will work themselves out.

The last piece of advice I have to offer is never to underestimate the power of laughter.

You are going to do wonderful things as the senior class, and you are very prepared to do so! You’ve got this!!

Chloe Kozal “My favorite memory of the Class of 2020 is Kairos. Experiencing the three days of retreat with them was amazing.

The girls were so mature and so supportive of each other.” - Mrs. Rawaa Shikwana “I remember they were freshman when they had to negotiate the giant hoop skirts and crinolines of Cinderella, sophs when they had to all learn cheers, juniors when they had to dance like a train pulling out of a station, and seniors when they had to walk around balancing bottles on their heads. What my favorite memories of the class are their smiles and the love they shared with each other and the rest of the school! Wishing them all good things!” - Mrs. Trish Sanders “I actually have so many... but I would say that I will mostly remember their light and leadership! There were so many times that I saw a senior reach out to help an underclasswoman, and it made my heart smile.”

Lauren Dionyssiou “I think the most important thing l learned from the NDA student and faculty body is having tolerant attitudes, thinking critically and independently, and always applying theory of knowledge in every aspect of my life.” - Bei Jiang “I think what I’ve taken away most is the ability to form relationships and lead others, especially through my four years of playing soccer here, I’ve had so many coaches/upperclasswomen teach and guide me through what it means to me a true leader, and that is making those around you feel valued, loved, and respected. I’m so grateful for these life skills and I have definitely grown immensely through these past four years.”
