Points of Crisis Around The World

Kurds Struggle as U.S. Allies Pull Out Noelle Albright In Northern Syria, the Kurdish population is facing the risk of displacement, harm and death. The Kurds are an ethnic group that is an ally of America in the fight against ISIS, but is viewed as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government.

“It is important to still have a military presence in Syria to continue to fight against ISIS and help the Kurds in that region,” social studies teacher Mr. Casey Feldstein said.

Refugees fleeing northern Syria are facing the risk of being injured and killed, the uncertainty of where their next meal will come from, and the impending winter season, with blankets and shelter in short supply.

After a five-year partnership with the Kurds, President Trump made the decision to withdraw American troops out of Syria on Oct. 9, which has triggered the forced removal of the Kurds from a place they have called home for years.

“In the expulsion process, Kurdish men, women and children are evacuating as refugees without a country to call home. As refugees they are noncombatants, with profound risk of inadequate food, lack of safe drinking water, scant if any medical care and marginal if any housing,” Dr. Dave Campbell from MSNBC.com said.

There is a chance that a small amount of U.S. forces may remain in Syria to secure oil fields and prevent them from falling into the hands of a resurgent Islamic State, even though President Donald Trump has insisted on pulling troops out of the country.

15 Million Go Hungry as Forces Battle Chloe Kozal Due to a civil war, 15 million Yemeni people are at risk of starvation and death. That is more people than the populations of New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles combined.

According to the United Nations (U.N.), the crisis in Yemen, one of the poorest nations in the Middle East, is the world's “largest humanitarian catastrophe.”

Additionally, there have been 15,000 casualties from fighting, though foreign journalists say the number is likely much higher.

BBC News reports Yemen’s civil war is about governmental control.

It began in 2014 when Houthi rebel forces began a coup against the government led by President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, seized Yemen’s capital and exiled Hadi.

Currently, both the rebels and the government claim to be the true government of Yemen. Both sides have received military support from other countries.

The war has caused food insecurity for at least half of the population, with 11 million in need.

The U.N., U.S., and other countries have given aid for the people, but observers say the food sent is being taken not only by the Houthi rebels, but also by armed units that are allied with the Saudi-led, American-backed military coalition fighting in Yemen, according to Associated Press reports shown on pbs.org/newshour, leaving many of the Yemeni people hungry and in need of medical supplies.

Protestors Fight for Human Rights Kaitlin Shiple Protests against one bill in Hong Kong have expanded to fight for rights.

Hong Kong was originally a British colony until 1997, when it became part of China again under a “one countrytwo systems” policy, which allows citizens to maintain rights of free speech, free assembly and unrestricted internet access.

The territory also has its own laws, system of government and police force underneath a mini-constitution called the Basic Law, which is supposed to last until 2047, but many citizens feel the government is working with Beijing to start limiting rights now.

According to BBCnews.com, protests started in February when the local government introduced a bill which would extradite people accused of crimes to places where Hong Kong had no extradition treaty, including China.

A newly elected official, Carrie Lam, was appointed by a pro-Beijing committee. Lam said the bill was needed for those who escaped prosecution by fleeing to Hong Kong. Others said it would allow China to target dissidents in Hong Kong with fake allegations.

Lam eventually withdrew the extradition bill, but protestors are continuing their protests, now arguing for full democracy.

“Anytime that there’s human rights being violated, it is wrong, people have a right as individuals to protest and elect their own officials, if they want to,” U.S. History teacher Mrs. Amy Kasprzak said.

Clashes between police and protesters have grown increasingly violent.

The Saying Is True: Better Safe Than Sorry Lauren Dionyssiou With the business of the holidays and winter driving quickly approaching, it is important for students to be aware of how to stay safe.

Sometimes girls need a ride, and Uber and other car ride services seem perfect to fill the need. However, there have been cases of fake Uber drivers picking up clients, resulting in dangerous situations for the passengers. There are currently over 110 million people worldwide using Uber as a way of transportation.

USA Today has outlined tips to be safe while using this convenient way to travel.

The first precaution is to verify the driver and the car. The Uber app will provide the driver’s name and picture, a picture of the car, the license plate number, and the driver’s rating. Checking to make sure that all of these things match will prevent you from getting in the car

“Don’t ask: “Who are you?” But instead ask, “Who are you here to pick up?” junior Katie Seewer said.

The second precaution is to make sure to pay attention to the rating of the driver on the app, as it can help you make your decision on if that particular driver is safe, or if you need to find someone with a better rating.

Some Teens Want Caffeine Kaitlin Shiple Four out of 10 American teens drink coffee everyday, according to the National Coffee Association. Caffeine has become increasingly more popular in teens and possibly more dangerous.

On April 26, 2017, 16-yearold Davis Allen Cripe died of a caffeine overdose after he drank a latte from McDonald’s, a large Diet Mountain Dew and an energy drink within two hours. The amount of caffeine in his system caused heart arrhythmia, which is irregular fast or slow heartbeats.

"Caffeine overconsumption and caffeine intoxication have serious health effects, even in moderate doses,” Dr. Danielle S. Battram, a researcher from Brescia University College who studied the impacts of caffeine in teens, said.

Caffeine is a central nervous stimulant that takes affect around 15 minutes after entering the bloodstream.

Common side effects of caffeine consumption includes an increase in blood pressure and

heart rate It is recommended that adolescents from ages 12-18 do not consume more than 100 mg a day.

This is equal to one cup of coffee or two to three cans of pop.

“I start my day with a large cup of coffee before school, and then if I’m having a bad day, I’ll make another large cup of coffee when I get home. If I can’t get to coffee, I’ll grab a Red Bull,” junior Nevaeh Krontz said.

According to a study done in 2017 by the National Coffee Association, almost 40 percent of teens get their caffeine from coffee, which is a 60 percent increase from a 2014 study.

Teens have more intense withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, diarrhea, dehydration and negative impacts on sleep.

“When I don’t have coffee, I have pounding headaches and I feel nauseous,” Nevaeh said.

The holidays mean many people will travel to see family or take trips out of state. It can be easy to be taken advantage of when you are out of state, for example in New York or Chicago, where taxi cab services are the normal way of transportation.

“Don’t tell them that you’re a tourist so that you don’t get scammed; make sure you know where you’re going so that the drivers don’t take you the long way to your destination and end up charging you more money,” Katie said.

New teen drivers on the road face many distractions, especially in the age of cell phones being constantly at your side.

“I have the ‘do not disturb’ feature turned on my phone to send messages to whoever texts me and calls me that lets them know that I am driving,” junior Natalie Doumet said.

Taking extra precautions, no matter how time-consuming, can help you to be much safer on the road and help to avoid unsafe situations.

Gold Cord GPA Adjusts for Weighted Classes Noelle Albright Honor cords are given to graduating seniors as a way to celebrate the merits they have earned in their four years at Notre Dame Academy.

Among these cords is the Gold Honor Cord, which is awarded to students who have a cumulative unrounded GPA of 3.70 or higher at the end of eight semesters for the classes of 2020 and 2021, and a cumulative unrounded GPA of 4.0 or higher at the end of eight semesters for the class of 2022 and consecutive years.

This change, noted on page 21 of the Notre Dame Academy Student Handbook, is new as of this year.

“The 4.0 requirement is consistent with our first honors, so now it is truly an honor cord. A part of that is there are so many girls that are in at least one CCP, AP

or IB course between their junior, senior or even sophomore years,” Dean of Academics Mrs. Andrea (Zobler) Zimmerman ‘96 said.

This change had been in the works for two years before the decision to change the GPA requirement was made, and it reflects the additions of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and College Credit Plus classes.

"It think this change is good because it shows that the girls of NDA are held to a higher standard," freshman Abby Garcia said.

"I think I need to try a bit harder now. If you take more honors classes, you should be fine, but if not, it may be a little more tricky to achieve.

Other than that, the change is not that bad, and I think a little challenge might be good for some people!" sophomore Caitlin Kidwell said.

Editor’s Note: The impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump has been debated by both Democrats and Republicans alike. Impeachment is an extremely important process and in our country’s history, only two of our 45 presidents have been impeached but never have been removed from office. As true journalists, the Vista staff wishes to show both sides of the debate through a special one person crosstalk in this issue.

Let the Constitution Do Its Work

While it is unlikely that Trump will be removed from office, it is the American duty of Congress to investigate his potential solicitation with Ukraine over an investigation of democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. It is because of this duty that the House of Representatives should move to impeach Trump for his actions with Ukraine and using foreign aid to have an advantage over an opponent for his own political agenda.

Even if he is not removed from office, the House must vote to impeach to show working with other countries to undermine other American politicians is wrong.

Republicans have debated that there has not been an official impeachment inquiry, so potential witnesses should not have to work with the investigation if the inquiry is not official. However, on Oct. 25, Federal Judge Beryl Howell stated that the inquiry was legal. When Republicans stormed an impeachment hearing, many argued that all representatives should be able to listen to the hearings and that the inquiry shouldn’t only be Democrat-controlled. The BBC stated that more than 40 Republicans are part of impeachment committees.

On Oct. 3, 2019, Trump asked Ukraine and China to investigate the Bidens in front of the press, saying “China should start an investigation into the Bidens, because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine” (CNBC). This shows that he only cares about his agenda and wanting to win the next 2020 presidential election. Even if one had not believed the whistleblower’s allegations, this public action shows some proof that he is actually involved in soliciting with Ukraine and potentially China and has abused his power as president.

While Trump could be impeached in a Democratcontrolled House, he would most likely be impeached but not removed because of the Republican controlled Senate would not vote that way. Because of the unlikelihood of his removal, it seems a waste of time to have an impeachment process if Trump will stay in office. The removal stage relies on a few people to stand their ground and overcome the majority vote.

On Oct. 25, 50 out of 53 Senate Republicans voted on a “non-binding resolution condemning the House impeachment inquiry.”

Since the Senate is a republican majority, these three Senators could tip the scales in removal from office. However, it is very unlikely that there would be 67 out of the 100 Senators to have a ⅔ majority to remove him from office. Most of these elected officials will stay with the majority of the party’s choice, but there could even be potential Democrats who would not vote for removal.

Some Republicans, including the Trump Administration, say that the impeachment inquiry is invalid because there had been no official House vote. Because some Republicans believed that the investigation was false before the judge’s hearing, on Oct. 24, 2 dozen Republicans stormed a secure meeting room during a witness’ testimony. GOP Rep. Scalise believed the inquiry is akin to “a Soviet-style process” and many believed that all representatives should witness hearings (BBC).

They also say that Trump’s alleged misconduct has only been heard by anonymous sources and complaints and that many are false. Some Democrat and Republican senators say since the presidential election is close, the decision to remove Trump from office should be the voters’ responsibility .

Editor’s Corner Hello, NDA! Welcome to our second issue of The Vista! I am truly proud of this issue because of all the new and exciting styles of articles in this issue, like the Q&A with Nuria and Nini, the three writer article on the first page, and this one person crosstalk! As editor, I hope that you enjoy this issue as we tried to keep it relevant to the most important issues that the world, our country, and our own NDA communities face.

What It Means To Be Women of Vision The phrase “Women of Vision” is Notre Dame Academy’s motto, a phrase that is put into almost everything associated with NDA. “Women of Vision” is something NDA wants girls to reflect in their everyday lives, both on and off campus.

The school has a way of running things to make its students into more respectful people. Rules are put into place to help people understand the value of respecting rules and being dedicated to not get in trouble- it's the idea that you will grow as a person.

School is normally thought of work and learning, but NDA is something more than classwork.

NDA itself was founded on compassion and love for all creation from the Sisters of Notre Dame. Teachers and staff work incredibly hard to incorporate the foundational ideals into class every day.

NDA holds students to a higher standard because the school is high standard. Private schools are more sophisticated and expect more from students simply because the ideas are from the school itself, not the state it is in. Teachers work endlessly to create challenging lessons that stimulate their students.

Connecting with teachers through school and faith really creates a unique environment.

NDA is here for students to excel. By providing a welcoming space, girls are able to grow in their faith through academics, monthly Mass, and Tuesday adorations. It is so incredibly rare that so many options are available for growth in faith, but the best thing is even though NDA is a Catholic school, we welcome all religions. In any way you can, we want you to grow in what you believe.

Girls should open their hearts when they walk in the doors of Lobby D for the first time as a freshman. NDA is a place where you begin the rest of your life as an adult, and high school is four years of growth into who you are as a working woman. High school will be over before we know it. Being apart of this sisterhood is something that only NDA girls have.

The foundations of the school are community and faith, so opening our hearts to let the goodness of NDA shape us into women is something special and unique.

Support Local Businesses  Local businesses are run by people who live in your community.

By buying their products, you are supporting people in the area and their businesses. Profits also go back into the products you are buying, so you help create what you own! Giving back to the community is a good thing, so do it by buying local goods.  By supporting local businesses, you are helping out the environment. Larger companies have a larger carbon footprint because they burn more fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation.  Local companies bring together the community because they make new and unique items specifically in your area! Local vendors often make their products by hand, so it adds a personal touch to it.

Not Sure What You Want To Do? There’s a Club for That!

Lauren Dionyssiou All Notre Dame girls should join a club, as it is a prime opportunity to meet new people and connect with other girls who have the same interests as you.

Students have much more fun in high school if they are involved in a club.

Notre Dame offers such a large variety of clubs that it is almost impossible to not find one to interest you.

When I first came to NDA freshman year, I did not know that much about clubs, and the number of them offered overwhelmed me. However, I took a chance, and it was worth it.

One category of clubs that Notre Dame offers are cultural clubs, including Asian, Latin, French, Spanish, Korean and African-American Club. You don’t have to be of any of these nationalities to join, and you do not have to be taking that language to join..

There are many different clubs centered around the arts as well, for example: Art Club, Speech and Debate Team, the fall musical and spring play, and Hip Hop Team. These clubs can bring out the creative side of any individual.

The musical and Speech Team are great opportunities to help you to get more comfortable being in front of people and teach you about stage presence and how to present yourself in front of large groups of people.

The clubs that cater to the spiritual aspect of a student are FIAT and SEAL Team, helping you to strengthen your relationship with God within the school and give you the opportunity to participate and help with retreats, liturgies, and to advocate for the pro-life movement, which is what SEAL Team is all about.

Ski Club is my personal favorite, as it is a great way to get out and do something super fun and make memories with the three trips that the clubs take every year. No experience is required, and it is a great club if you are looking to try something new.

Student Council and Pep Club are two of the larger clubs that NDA offers, and they are a fantastic way to represent your school and be involved in your school’s activities.

Greek Life Can Add to College Life Noelle Albright Greek life, a staple to many college campuses, is often misunderstood by many people, especially prospective high school students looking for ways to be active in their future college life.

A sorority is a sisterhood formed around common goals and aspirations.

Together they learn, grow, and make the sorority stronger. Their common experiences build ties that last a lifetime.

“Rushing is when students become acquainted with the different fraternities or sororities on campus, and the process can range from very formal and structured to informal and casual. Sorority rush tends to be more formal, with different themes and requirements for each day,” according to IvyWise.com.

“I would really encourage girls to go greek especially if they are looking for a great bond between a great group of girls.

I actually decided to go through recruitment because I loved the sisterhood aspect of Notre Dame,” Chi Omega member Ms. Madison Nieset ‘18 said.

events, you are sure to be busy. And make sure you don’t let your grades slip, because your acceptance into sororities often depends on it. Being in a sorority can easily cost over $1,000 a semester, and more if you plan on living in your sorority house.

“An assumption that isn’t true about sororities is that we’re all stuck up, selfish, rich, and grew up in wealthy homes, families and neighborhoods. I grew up on the east side of Toledo in a single parent home, and college is not something that girls do where I come from,” Chi Omega member Ms. Aislinn Bill ‘18 said.

Notre Dame welcomes new exchange students as they come for an education here in America as well as to experience the culture and build friendships.

Many girls come to NDA each year through exchange programs from all over the world such as Germany, France, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Spain and more.

Two of the exchange students, Nuria Bello (Spain) and Eúgenie/Nini Raffo (France) were asked questions about their take on America.

What do you like so far about America? “I like that you guys take sports very seriously, and that they are so important here.”~Nuria “I like the all-girls schools because they build confidence. In France the girls don’t always know how to act in public, and we need more things like this to boost confidence.”~Nini How is America different from your home country? “In America you are much closer with your families; it’s not like that in Spain. We are also used to using public transportation in Spain, where here everyone uses cars.”~Nuria “You feel like you don’t live in a city here because everything is so spread out. In France everything is located in one central location.”~Nini Is there anything you are looking forward to doing while you’re here?

“Going to prom and corn mazes!” ~Nuria “Football games!”~Nini Favorite food/ favorite place to eat in America? “Chick-fil-a”~Nuria “Chili dogs”~Nini Are you involved in any activities or hope to be? “I want to try broomball”~Nuria “I am on the hip-hop team”~Nini What was the first thing you noticed about America when you first arrived? Both: “air conditioning!”

Besides coming for an education, these girls are also excited to have fun and experience the American way of life and culture while they are here.

They are always looking for people to hang out with to help complete their American “to do” list while they are here.

Students Find Coping Mechanisms for Stress Noelle Albright Feeling overwhelmed by school, extracurriculars and life? You are not alone.

According to the Stress in America Report by the American Psychology Association (APA), not only are 42 percent of teens indicated not doing anything to cope with their stress or not knowing what to do to manage it.

Stress is a universal problem, but high school students are especially prone to feelings of exhaustion and stress. Most students feel the need to relieve stress, but with packed schedules full of activities and responsibilities, many girls struggle to find the perfect balance.

“Stress levels in girls have definitely been on the rise, and I think it is still rising, unfortunately,” nurse Mrs. Sarah Mazur said.

What can be done? Getting more sleep, focusing on your strengths, engaging in physical activity, doing things that make you happy, and talking to someone are all ideas proposed by the APA.

“Yoga is perfect for reducing stress as it allows you to take a step back, take time for yourself, and most importantly - breathe!” yoga teacher and senior Emilyn Lagger said.

With the rise of competitive classes in high school such as Advanced

Placement, International Baccalaureate and College Credit Plus, teens are feeling more stressed than ever.

The regular routine for many students is school, homework, extracurricular activities, sleep, repeat. Certain challenges can be regarded as ‘good stress,’ but continuous exposure can overwhelm students and make them more prone to chronic stress.

“My stress levels are pretty high. On a scale of 1-10, I feel probably a 9 on a daily basis. School takes up a lot of my life, and I have a lot of extracurriculars because I want to get into college,” junior Paige N. Howell said.

At NDA, there are many resources able to be taken advantage of when dealing with stress.

Students are always encouraged to talk to their parents, physicians, NDA Nurse Beeks or Nurse Mazur, counselors, teachers, whether they are Safe Listeners or not, and their own circle of friends.

Robot Brings the Human Touch in Class Lauren Dionyssiou A new learning tool at NDA helps students who are sick or unable to be in school attend classes and interact with teachers and students.

This tool is a robot, which may or may not have an NDA skirt on as it rolls down the hallways. Its primary function is to assist those girls who need extra help with being able to attend their classes because of medical issues or conditions that keep them home-bound.

“The robot is used as a tool for students that can’t be at the school physically. They are also used in hospitals to help patients maneuver through the hallways when it gets to be too crowded,” Assistant IT Director Mr. Nick Ball said.

Currently, one student is using the robot to help maneuver herself in between classes. The robot helps the student to get caught up on her schoolwork and be able to communicate with the teacher and students, even though she is not physically in the classroom.

her hand,’ to alert the teacher of her desire to make a comment or ask a question.

“The robot gives the student more of an opportunity to interact with those

in the classroom, as it has the ability for the students to see the face of whoever is using it, as well as the student gets to see those around her, increasing the social interaction,” Director of Technology Mr. Jeff Williams said.

“When girls are out for extended periods they lose that social interaction; the robot helps girls feel more connected to their school and to the girls because they can choose to show their face. And vice versa, the student also has the option of turning off the camera so that they don’t have to show their face,” Mr. Williams said.

The robot has been used for about three years.

“We have had good success with it, but it does have some limitations, as it’s not allowed to go to the gym, Performing Arts Center, or Choir Room,” he said.

There are also helpers for the robot, assisting it as it moves from fourth period to the charging station.

“It is the closest thing to being in class without actually being in class,” Mr. Ball said.

Rant: Food for Thought While being a vegetarian can help your health in many aspects, there are several cons to becoming a vegetarian, such as some health risks and “vegetarian privilege.”

One health benefit of being a vegetarian is that it may increase your chances of having a longer life expectancy, reduced risk of cancer and weight loss.

However, vegetarians must be careful to make sure they still have nutrients and proteins in their diet.

For some people, sometimes a sudden change in diet from meat filled to meat free can lead to iron and calcium deficiency.

The vegetarian diet may work for some, but some people who choose to be vegetarian may need to include fish and dairy in their diets to help their diet be stable. It’s not helpful to if a vegetarian only survives off of carbs and doesn’t have a well rounded diet.

Besides these factors, many vegetarians or vegans benefit from a “vegan/vegetarian privilege.” This privilege is not simply the fact that most meat free foods or substitutes are typically more expensive than meat, but that being a vegetarian sometimes shows privilege as a person who has the education and money to access vegan food and focus on animal rights instead of human rights.

Some of these human rights are the access to healthy foods and the workers who produce proteins such as nuts for vegetarians, who have a lack of human rights in the workforce.

Many of these rights are low wages, but also harsh working conditions that can lead to health problems such as arthritis and diabetes. While some of these cashew and nut options may be pricey, a majority of the money goes to the companies instead of the workers.

While not all vegetarians are able to afford specialty vegan foods or who ignore the plight of food laborers, it is true many only think about the good of the animals when they choose to become vegetarians. Before deciding to become vegetarian or vegan, check with your doctor to make sure that is the right diet for you.
