Action Needed to Prevent Climate Change Youth Lead Movement in Fridays for Future, along with NDA Students, Staff Chloe Kozal A viral video of a turtle with a straw in its nose inspired an environment movement in 2018. This video, originally posted in 2015, has 37 million views and caused many corporations such as Starbucks to ban or plan to ban plastic straws at a gradual rate.

While this movement may have helped spread the word about the impact plastics have on marine animals, straws are only part of the problem affecting oceans and environment today.

The major problem is single-use plastics, which include straws, water bottles and packaging. These are problematic because of how people handle them after their use.

According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), singleuse plastic makes up about half of the plastic waste in the world, and only nine percent of the nine billion tons of plastic the world has produced has been recycled.

Some NDA students and faculty try to use as few single-use plastics as possible.

“I use metal silverware and glass containers for my lunch dishes, I use a plastic reusable water bottle and try to not eat anything that is bagged or in plastic,” junior Emma Pelton said.

“I reuse plastic bags for lunch, and I have two lizards, so I reuse plastic bottle caps for their food bowls,” art teacher Ms. Megan Maizgowicz ‘14 said.

Not only does plastic affect marine animals like turtles who mistake plastic bags for jellyfish, but plastics and Styrofoam also impact humans. Toxins in Styrofoam containers can get into food and drinks and plastic waste impacts economies as well.

While people have reduced their use of plastic straws, many believe people must go beyond that and reduce consumption of all single-use plastics.

According to UNEP, one to five trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year. Five trillion is almost 10 million plastic bags per minute. If tied together, all these plastic bags could be wrapped around the world seven times every hour.

Teenagers are the world’s future and can change how humans impact the environment. Locally, Toledoans voted to pass a revolutionary bill to help protect Lake Erie. In India, they have banned single-use plastics.

“You are failing us, but young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you.”

One revolutionary 16 year old leading the environmental movement Fridays For Future is Greta Thunberg. For three weeks, Greta protested in front of the Swedish government building against Sweden’s lack of willingness to fight against climate change.

“In Germany I go with my friends to Fridays for Future. Fridays for Future is a strike in which students leave school on a Friday morning to strike, [and] they then go to the city center,” junior and German exchange student Hannah Schloz said.

After going viral, Greta created Fridays for Future as a way for students to protest and encourage their governments to make sure the earth’s temperature did not rise above 2 degrees Celsius.

Greta spoke in front of world leaders during the United Nations Climate Conference on Sept 23.

She said the current international plan to cut carbon emissions may only be 50 percent successful in trying to achieve only a 1.5 degree increase in global temperatures. In 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement’s goal was to limit carbon emissions below 2 degrees Celcius.

Some activists say that the agreement’s goal was not enough, while others believe its goals are unrealistic.

In 2017, President Donald Trump stated the U.S. would withdraw from the climate agreement by 2020.

Companies such as Peabody Energy, Southern Company, and the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity oppose pro-EPA laws that would limit CO2 emissions, not believing that science has found evidence of global warming caused by humans.

Girls Getting Educated on the SND, School History Chloe Kozal On September 27, the Notre Dame Academy community celebrated Founder’s Day and received ice cream sandwiches as a treat. However, some in the student body know little about the history of Notre Dame and the women who created the Sisters of Notre Dame.

“The most important thing that all NDA students should know about the history of Notre Dame is the Sisters’ faith, what they had to go through and their sacrifices to get to where we are now,” theology teacher Mrs. Rawaa Shikwana said.

The history of the Notre Dame Sisters begins across the globe in Coesfeld, Germany with two women named Hildegonde and Lisette. Hildegonde and Lisette welcomed students into their home because many were poor.

One day a child was hungry and didn’t have anything to eat for lunch, so Lisette gave him part of her sandwich. The shar

ing of the sandwich story is why NDA girls now have ice cream sandwiches on Founder’s Day. Lisette and Hildegonde eventually became two religious Sisters. Their names were changed to Sister Marie Aloysie and Ignatia.

Sister Aloysie and Sister Ignatia then created their own congregation of The Sisters of Notre Dame in 1850.

“To me, the most important part of the Sisters' history is the Kulturkampf.

This is the time in the 1870s when the German government tried to control what the Catholic Church and other Christian religions could say and do.

Because the government made life harder and harder for Catholics, the Sisters decided to come to America.

Without that move to the United States, we wouldn't be here at Notre Dame Academy today,” Sr. Colleen Cousino ‘79 said.

Notre Dame Academy was founded in 1904, and the Toledo Sisters had many different properties in Toledo in the early 20th century before moving NDA from Bancroft Street to 3535 West Sylvania Avenue in the 1950s.

“The interesting thing was that the property was all the way from Secor road to Woodley. The part that the current NDA building sat on a cornfield and wheat fields. We also had property on the other side of 475. We had a house over there and a cottage in the area that is now Sunforest,” Sr. Gail Wrassman ‘61 said.

Knowing the Sisters of Notre Dame’s history is crucial to being a true NDA student.

For example, traditions such as Founder’s Day help girls remember the women of the past who helped shape students and alumnae to be the women that they are today. The sharing of the sandwich brings all together as an NDA community.

To Lock, or Not to Lock; That Is the Question Keeping It Fast

Lauren Dionyssiou Not having a lock on one’s locker is the best choice for this school year for a number of reasons.

The first being that they are time consuming. When a student walks into school late and is rushing to try to get to TCB before the bell, the last thing she wants to do is fiddle with the lock on her locker, trying desperately to get it open.

When someone is running late, she wants to be able to open her locker with ease and come into school knowing that their locker will open. It is one less thing to worry about while rushing to beat the bell.

Another dilemma that many girls have gone through is their locks getting stuck, something that is seen quite frequently.

This complete inconvenience leads to being late to class and having to find someone to help you, which can take a lot of time in itself.

While it does teach girls responsibility having them lock their lockers, not locking your locker also teaches responsibility, as it requires girls to be more vigilant and aware of their belongings, where as if someone locks their locker they just assume that their belongings are always where they need to be and may not check as frequently.

Not locking one’s locker requires girls to keep track of valuable items in their locker and be cognoscente of where they are at all times so that nothing gets stolen.

Everyone had a lock last year, but from observation, most people didn’t use them, and they weren’t serving a purpose, so why keep them if they just seem to get in the way?

Locks have proved to be time consuming, so why not get rid of them?

NDA provides locks for all students to use on their lockers, why would a girl not use it? The school is trying to teach girls responsibility, time management, and how to keep personal belongings safe.

After graduating from NDA, girls will go to college and will be responsible for looking after personal belongings. Lockers will not be available most of the time; it’s the real world, so girls have to protect their things. Locking lockers gives students the mindset to be aware of how to protect belongings from being stolen, which leads to becoming responsible for their items and themselves.

Girls also learn time management by using locks between classes. If they have to go to their lockers in between classes, the lock has to be undone. Combination locks are a struggle for some girls, so this provides a practicing tool for girls to make a speedy trip to pick up books.

No one wants to ever think items could be stolen at schools.

It’s sad to have to think about that. Having personal items stolen would be one of the most frustrating situations to go through, especially knowing that it could have been prevented by a girl simply using the lock provided to her by her school intensifies the frustration. Without locks, there could be blazer and hydroflask thefts.

Using locks is a good idea, but for those who want to use a different lock, girls should ask to be able to bring in their own locks because school locks often get jammed and do not work very well from overuse.

Locks have proved useful to keep belongings safe, so why not keep using them?

Editor’s Corner Hello and Happy October, NDA! I feel so excited and privileged to be Editor in Chief and writer for The Vista this year! Journalism is so important in our everyday lives, and it’s truly special that NDA has The Vista to talk about issues and topics that students are impacted by and care about. Journalism allows writers to express ideas, spread information and fight for the rights of others. The Free Press is the first right given to us in the Bill of Rights, which shows the importance of the written word. Keep updated on the news, be informed. The nation’s founders believed in the freedom of the press, and this right still remains today. We all have busy lives, but we should never be so busy that we are uninformed about the world.

Safety Promises Go Up in Smoke It seems as though a new case of vaping-related illness is seen in the news every day, but simply reading articles and voicing concerns does not cut it anymore.

There has been a recent outbreak of vaping-related lung illnesses, and the number of cases in the U.S. has risen to over 450. People being hospitalized are far from the typical assumption of being older, lifelong smokers. In fact, most have been teens who reported coughing, chest pain or shortness of breath days or even weeks before hospitalization.

Historically, vaping devices have been marketed as being a new and safe alternative to cigarettes. Juul, a dominant e-cigarette brand, markets their products as “safer,” with appealing flavors like mango and mint. The problem is that Juul’s marketing appeals to teens, even though the company says it does not target teens. Just one Juul “pod” contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 cigarettes, according to tobaccofreekids.org.

In the past year, over one-quarter of high school students have reported using e-cigarettes, according to

freep.com. Many people, especially teenagers, may not even know the harm being done to their body.

Due to their development, teen brains are also the most vulnerable to addiction and have less impulse control.

Center4research.org reports teenage vaping is believed to be a gateway to smoking and other drugs; it also exposes the lungs to harmful chemicals that haven’t been approved by the FDA. Experts, especially those in the Center for Disease Control (CDC), are concerned that vaping is becoming a widespread epidemic among teenagers.

Girls aren’t shielded from this either; many of their own friends and neighbors, even unbeknownst to them, may suffer from an addiction to vaping and e-cigarette use.

Everyone’s job is to educate others about the dangers of vaping and to help people who may be struggling with vaping addiction.

Take this opportunity to be thankful for friends and show care by being educated and offering support.

Why you should go to the Father-Daughter Dance 

The Father Daughter dance is a special NDA tradition that involves costumes, fun, dancing, and dads. Sounds fun, right? Unfortunately, not as many girls go to the dance, opting to go to the Valentines Dance or Christmas Dance instead.

However, you can still make this a special night for you and your dad.



You should go to the Father Daughter Dance because there aren’t many opportunities just for you and your dad. There’s Mom and Me, the Mother-Daughter luncheon, and special events for alumna moms, but nothing special for dads besides the dance is a chance for your dad to shine.



Planning your costume with your dad is a fun bonding experience!



You should go to the dance because it’s a special time for just you two to have some fun, to eat all the junk food without mom around, and to burn all the calories off by dancing goofily with each other and your friends.



This is something special you can do for your dad. This is your opportunity.

Take 3 hours off your day on November 3 to celebrate with your dad. It’ll be worth it.

Girls Need More Time, Room for Lunch Lauren Dionyssiou Notre Dame should have two lunch periods. This would create more room and less crowded spaces in the lunch line, lunch tables, and lunch period in general.

The lunch room currently is always so overcrowded with people trying to go back and forth to buy things, warm up food, and socialize that it can be hard to move without accidentally bumping into someone, which I have done on multiple occasions.

The lunch line is the most crowded.

It’s almost impossible to get where you need to go sometimes because of the number of people in the entree and pizza line, and the occasional girls coming up to grab a bag of chips or a cookie.

Two lunch periods, the first with freshmen and sophomores, and the second with juniors and seniors would help this overcrowded situation immensely.

Not only will this solution help in the lunch line, but it will also help the seating arrangements immensely. It will open up more places to sit in the Dining Commons for the girls who may have to sit in Fitz Commons or Lobby D, while still letting the girls who originally sat in the Dining Commons have their seats.

Fewer girls equals smaller lunch lines, which means more time for girls to eat their food.

On days with popular entrees, like the Eagle Bowl, where there are very long lines, girls may not get their food until lunch is halfway over.

This causes an unrelaxing lunch for these girls who get their lunch late, and they may need to multitask if they have homework or other obligations they need to get done during the lunch period.

I have had personal experience with this, getting food very late on occasion and having to eat in a shorter amount of time, which can be challenging.

It can even be hard to hear friends talking to you at your lunch table from time to time because of the number of girls in one space.

Having two lunch periods would benefit NDA so much. This will help girls to have the majority of the lunch period to eat and socialize, which is what lunch is meant to be.

Safe Listener Program Offers Friendly Ear Noelle Albright High school is a difficult period of time for many, as it contains difficult transitions in both family and social lives. Modern teenagers face a myriad of concerns including bullying, drugs, alcohol, acne, depression, social media and more.

The Safe Listener program was founded on the idea that any institution whose mission is to educate young people should have a group of adults available to whom these young people can come to when facing a crisis.

NDA adopted the Safe Listeners Program in 2015. Teachers attend presentations by various professionals to become commissioned as a Safe Listener.

“I feel that there is a need for the Safe Listener program because students are sometimes too scared to just go up to normal teachers, but with a label like Safe Listener, I feel like they would be more comfortable,” junior Hayden Kajfasz said.

Safe listeners are thoroughly trained to be able to listen and assist students in the problems they face.

NDA Senior Brings on New SJJ Cheer Squad

“Teachers have to go to an introductory meeting, where we do the bulk of the training and explain the mission of the program. They are required to attend two to three additional sessions to be commissioned as a safe listener,” counselor Ms. Abby Beham ‘09 said.

The importance of having a teacher available isn’t just so they can give you advice or talk; it’s so that they can listen and help guide you on the right path.

“Having a safe listener is like having a safe place where you can discuss how you’re feeling without being judged. Everyone has those days where you don’t want to tell everything that’s going on, but you do want someone to listen,” senior Kelesia Sydney said.

NDA’s Safe Listener Program welcomes two new advisors this year, counselors Mrs. Kristin Schank, along with Ms. Beham. It will be the first year leading the program for both of them, and they are looking forward to helping this program grow.

Chloe Kozal Two weeks before the summer of her senior year, Alicia Moreno began campaigning for a St. John’s Cheer Team.

Historically, St. John’s Jesuit High School only permitted a boys spirit squad, and the only option for NDA girls who wanted to be a cheerleader was to be part of the cheer squad for Saint Francis DeSales High School. However, some girls have a closer allegiance with St. John’s than St. Francis.

Alicia teamed up with SJJ senior Gary Batch and created petitions for students and faculty who supported a SJJ cheer team.

“I aimed for 500 signatures, but I got 800,” Alicia said.

St. John’s plans to expand their Spirit Squad to include girls who wish to be cheerleaders for them as part of a cheer squad.

Their rival, SFS is an example of how a spirit squad and

cheer team can coexist with one another.

“Many other girls and I are interested in cheerleading because clearly SFS has a cheer team, and I feel like it is only fair if SJJ does, too!

Yes, SJJ has a spirit squad, but they can still bring the spirit just like we can,” senior and aspiring SJJ cheerleader Hunter Jensen said.

SJJ plans to keep the squads separated, but during certain points during football matches they would perform together, allowing unity between schools and the squads themselves.

“Cheerleaders and Spirit Squad can work together to create cheers that are new, funny and exciting. We can create a new exciting tradition with the spirit squad by having unique cheers and performances which feature the Spirit Squad,” Alicia said.

Fiddler on The Roof Keeps Its ‘Traditions’ Lauren Dionyssiou The sun rises and sets in the village of Anatevka, where NDA’s fall musical, Fiddler on the Roof, will come to life.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Jews and Orthodox Christians live in the little village of Anatevka in the pre -revolutionary Russia of the Czars. A tradition in the community is for the matchmaker to arrange the match for the daughters. The milkman Reb Tevye, his Golde and they have five daughters.

The story centers around their daughters marriages, and the hardships that come with challenging the cultural traditions and expectations of getting married through the matchmaker.

“Fiddler on the Roof is a story of a community, but one thing anyone involved in musicals knows is that each show creates its own community,” musical director Mrs. Trish (Beazley) Sanders ’71 said.

The audience will get to see the cast perform many classic songs in the musical, such as the famous opening song, “Tradition,” as well as “Sunrise, Sunset,”

“I am excited for opening night, to see all the lights shining on the stage, and the chants that we will get to do together as a cast,” freshman Ava Foor

said.

“We are blessed with the wonderful students acting, dancing, and singing with our fabulous musical team and with our tremendously giving volunteers,” Mrs. Sanders said.

For the seniors, this will be one final goodbye to the NDA stage. “I’m going to miss the cast. In musical, we all become a family and it’s sad to leave them,” senior Maria Bier said.

Along with the songs, there will be many authentic dances involved; one is the bottle dance, with students dancing while performing with wine bottles on their heads.

“NDA has a long tradition of casting girls in roles sometimes played by boys.

See if you can spot some of our girls in the famous "Bottle Dance" and other moments in the show!” Mrs. Sanders said.

Show dates are Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., 20 at 2 p.m., 25, and 26 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.. Tickets can be bought online at showtix4u.com.

Art and Theatre Trips Inspire NDA Artists Chloe Kozal The IB Visual Arts Year I and II students attended a field trip in early September to the Global Conversations: Art in Dialogue Exhibition which will be on display through March 2020. Mr. and Mrs. Watson, parents of 2019 alumna Miss Sarah Watson who donated this docent guided tour at the Toledo Museum of Art to the Visual Arts Department last year.

The exhibit was especially important for the IB Visual Arts class because of the international theme.

“For the IB Visual Arts Year I, the exhibition provided a speedy introduction to numerous global artists and thematic subjects. This will help them be inspired to create their own artwork in the two year course,” IB Visual Arts teacher Mrs. Susan Kozal said.

“I have been to the museum many times in the past, but I have never seen such an amazing exhibit. I learned so much from the docent and the pieces there were so unique,” IB Visual Artist and senior Natalie Nester said.

set during the 9/11 terrorist attacks when commercial airlines needed to have 7,000 passengers stay in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland until they could fly them to their destination in the United States. Come from Away had shows from September 10 until September 15.

“We were excited to go on the anniversary week of 9/11. We love the message of the show about people opening

hearts and homes to strangers from all over,” theatre teacher Mrs. Trish (Beazley) Sanders ’71 said.

Come From Away is based off of a true event and many of the characters in the show have the same names and stories as the actual passengers and citizens of Gander. It also includes the storyline of Capt. Beverly Bass, the first female captain for commercial flights and first female captain to have an all female crew. She was the captain of one of American Airlines’ flights that went to Gander.

“My favorite part of the musical was the opening song, Welcome to the Rock.

I think [Come From Away] is important because it shows how many people were affected by 9/11, and how so many places around the world honored the people who died even though they weren’t from America,” freshman Mallika Badoni said.

“The message of unity is important in this time of division and violence. We need to come together and love one another as a community,” junior Maria Evola said.

Rant: Beauty Within Kaitlin Shiple

When you look in the mirror, do you focus on how your teeth are not perfectly straight or how your pores are not microscopic?

Or do you see how your eyes have golden specks in them? Or the way your smile gives puts dimples in the sides of your face?

You are beautiful. Whether you believe that or not is up to you; no one else can change your view of yourself. Girls often fail to see how wondrous they are. Seeing your friends degrade themselves everyday takes a toll on you. Surrounding yourself with incredible people is an amazing feeling, but the worst feeling is knowing they will not see themselves in the same light.

Realizing you are beautiful is not the easiest thing in the world to accomplish. Living in a world where people with seemingly perfect skin, hair and body shape are idolized makes seeing true beauty difficult. Everyone struggles with seeing true beauty in herself because beauty is an idea that is defined by oneself. No one can identify what beauty means to you because it is all a matter of interpretation.

Girls of NDA, anything you find ‘wrong' with yourselves does not matter. You are beautiful because you were created to be beautiful. Souls make us beautiful. Being good people makes us beautiful. Beauty is not determined by a physical flaw we see in ourselves.

We constantly underestimate our own worth because we have a fractured perspective. From a young age we have been taught that acting egotistical is not a desired quality. We have confused confidence and recognizing self worth with excessive pride, which then leads everyone to ignore the value they possess within themselves.

If you can see the beauty in others, then you should see the beauty in yourself!
