Student Service Projects Over Summer LAUREN SASALA

During the time, students will prepare sandwiches and other food to then distribute at different locations around Toledo. Students will be able to sign up on the St. John's website every week. "Seeing how much need for help there is in our community is really eye opening. It makes me want to do more and more and to get everyone involved,” junior Claire Tipton said.

Although classes will be out for summer, the service opportunities will continue to be available for students. Students will be able to stay involved and give back both locally and globally. The Toledo YES Project The YES Project is an opportunity for incoming freshmen to upcoming seniors to give back to the community. This service project involves, on average, 70 students from other local high schools. From July 13-16, students will be assigned a group of 10-12 participants as well as a location in the community to visit each day to assist. The smaller groups of participants will spend the day at their given location to complete different tasks as needed. These may include painting, yard work and roofing. After spending the day serving, students return to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish to reflect, pray and discuss the different experiences of helping those in need. Students will remain overnight at the parish throughout the entirety of the project. “I grew closer to so many new people and I was also able to help the community and people in need. I would definitely recommend doing this project because it is a great way to serve. It made me realize that there is so much good in the world and it is hidden in the places you least expect it ,” junior Ailis Dillon said. Nicaragua 10 students as well as 3 adults will be returning to Granada, Nicaragua to continue to serve the citizens in need. The

The main project for this trip will be for assisting in building homes for the families who work in garbage dumps. "Being a part of a different culture for a week was such a once in a lifetime opportunity. I enjoyed every part of it as it was so rewarding to be able to help people so far from home,” junior Michaela Dray said. Labre The Labre service program will continue throughout the summer every Monday beginning at 3:45pm. This service opportunity involves students from both St. Ursula Academy and St. John's Jesuit High School and Notre Dame.

Migrant Ministry Migrant Ministry is a week-long service opportunity that involves staying with fellow classmates and Sisters of Notre Dame to help tutor children of migrant workers. Migrant Ministry will take place on two consecutive weeks beginning from July 10-15th and July 18-23rd. Students will be assisting Sr. Liz Garcia in Fostoria to help migrant children prepare to receive the sacraments as well as teaching faith basics. "The students worked to create a relationship with the children they helped tutor. The kids sensed that the volunteers really cared about them. This allowed the kids to move up at least one reading level,” Migrant Ministry coordinator Sr. Teresita Richards said. "I am always very amazed at all the opportunities that our girls are involved in. They are very passionate about what they are doing," Campus Ministry coordinator Mrs. Faye Smith said. Participating in these service projects allow students to complete their required service hours for the upcoming school year as well as give back to the community. “Notre Dame girls truly have a desire to serve those less fortunate than themselves,” Mrs. Smith said.
