Facebook: Is It Free Speech or Paid Speech?

Facebook Refuses to Fact Check Political Ads, Claiming 1st Amendment Protection Kaitlin Shiple

With the heat of the upcoming presidential election edging closer, Facebook will continue to publish political ads and comments of politicians without checking for accuracy and truth.

Issues with Facebook’s distribution of political ads spans from its allowance of Russian operatives to manipulate ads in the U.S. 2016 elections to India, where Facebook worked with current Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign to make him "the world's No.2 most ‘liked’ politician behind Barack Obama," according to Modi's campaign officials in The New York Times.

Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has made it clear the popular media platform will not fact check ads from politicians, even if they contain lies, in the interest of free speech.

“As a journalism teacher, I fully support free speech, but that doesn’t mean you have no responsibilities. The news media is held to a standard of truthfulness and is responsible for ads that appear within each platform. If Facebook is going to carry political speech and ads, it should meet the same standards,” Mrs. Julie Sells said.

Despite objections to Facebook’s refusal to ban political ads with false information, Facebook will not change its policy.

“I believe in a democracy it’s really important that people can see for themselves what politicians are saying, so they can make their own judgments. I

don’t think that a private company should be censoring politicians or news,” Mr. Zuckerberg said in a recent interview with The Washington Post.

In response to this, Ms. Gayle King, co-host of CBS This Morning, reported that around 200 of employees from Facebook wrote a letter to Mr. Zuckerberg about the difference between free speech and paid speech.

As a result of false advertisements revolving around the coronavirus outbreak, Facebook is starting to ban ads that have topics including hand sanitizer, COVID-19 testing for kids, face masks, and surface disinfecting wipes.

By banning advertisements like these, Facebook is trying to prevent exploitation from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"We recently implemented a policy to prohibit ads that refer

to the coronavirus and create a sense of urgency, like implying a limited supply, or guaranteeing a cure or prevention. We also have policies for surfaces like Marketplace that prohibit similar behavior” a spokesperson from Facebook said in a recent interview with Business Insider.

Surrounding the COVID-19 issues, Facebook is worried advertisements like these should be prohibited to avoid a mass panic.

“It could provide a false hope for someone who could be casually scrolling on Facebook and just happen to have the [coronavirus]” junior Maya Card said.

Instagram, a social media app that is owned by Facebook, has recently been struggling with the same false COVID-19 cure advertisements. Instagram has gotten rid of all coronavirus related augmented reality (AR) from the app, such as filters that alter surroundings or faces.

“We’ve removed previously published effects and are rejecting all new effects, which claim to predict, diagnose, treat or cure coronavirus,” Instagram said to its Spark AR program, which allows users to create AR features for the app.

Instagram has also implemented a new stay at home feature to encourage people to stay home.

Users can post it on their Instagram stories with the small white and blue icon of a house with the words “Stay Home” on the side.

In October 2019, Twitter said it would ban all political ads to stem the tide of misinformation.

Coronavirus Concerns the World, U.S.A and Ohio Lauren Dionyssiou As the coronavirus is continuing to make its way around the world and further into the United States, everyone is searching for answers for how to prevent this virus and protect themselves and loved ones from what has come to be a world pandemic.

According to The Washington Post, what started as a disease in a central China city spread from animals to humans. It was first detected on the last day of 2019; there are currently around 441,334 cases around the world and 19,766 deaths, as of publication.

According to The Washington Post, here are some of the latest developments: Lawmakers passed a $2 trillion fiscal package — the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act- which sends direct cash payments to many Americans.

The State Department warned Americans not to travel internationally, and all who are should return home imme-

diately, or otherwise seek shelter in those countries.

Italy has now passed China with the highest number of deaths relating to the Coronavirus at 3,045 and is extending lockdown measures.

New legislation provides manufacturers of N95 face masks protection against lawsuits when selling certain masks to healthcare workers.

It will free producers, including 3M and Honeywell, to sell tens of millions more masks per month to hospitals, according to Vice President Mike Pence.

Younger adults are now a large percentage of coronavirus patients in the United States.

With that in mind, there are certainly safety tips that everyone needs to be aware of, the most important being to WASH YOUR HANDS! Washing with hand sanitizer or some kind of alcohol will help to kill the viruses that may be present.

Ohio has issued a stay-athome order for everyone except essential workers as part of the state's efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus. It does allow people

to continue seeking health services, shopping for necessary supplies and services, and limited outdoor activity, according to the governor.

“I’ve just been playing my flute and de-stressing to be safe, and I haven't been around anyone as well. I've just been watching the news and communicating with my friends,” sophomore Sneha Mashalkar said.

As the world searches for answers, people need to make these safety tips a top priority, as well as staying informed.

Extra Sleep Can Make You Feel More Awake Lauren Dionyssiou Taking a nap after a long day at school or work is oftentimes one of the first things on people’s minds, but are naps really beneficial for you in the long run?

According to the Mayo Clinic, benefits of napping include relaxation, reduced fatigue, increased alertness, improved mood and improved performance, which includes quicker reaction time and better memory.

A study at NASA on sleepy military pilots and astronauts found that a 40-minute nap improved performance by 34 percent and alertness by 100 percent.

According to the National

Sleep Foundation, researchers in a 2006 study at the Sleep Medicine and Research Center affiliated with St. John's Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri looked at the effectiveness of taking naps and consuming caffeine to cope with sleepiness during the night shift.

They found that both naps and caffeine improved alertness and performance among night shift workers and that the combination of naps and caffeine had the most beneficial effect.

Disadvantages also come into play when considering taking these after school/ work naps. Two of the big

drawbacks include sleep inertia, which occurs after you wake up and you feel a sense of disorientation. The other drawback is sleeping problems during the night.

“I personally feel more tired after naps, and I have a hard time napping for only a few minutes. I prefer getting a lot of sleep at night rather than taking a nap midway through my day,” senior Jasmine Burkes said.

While it is normal to want to take a nap from time to time, there are tips to make your nap most effective, leaving you feeling refreshed.

According to the Mayo Clinic, keep naps short, only

about 10-20 minutes at most.

Another tip is to nap in the early afternoon, as napping after 3 p.m. can interfere with nighttime sleep.

A third tip is making sure that you are in an environment that is appropriate for taking naps, away from any commotion or distractions.

Naps affect everyone differently; for some they can cause a great boost of energy, but for others they may slow them down.

Figuring out what’s right for you individually, as well as keeping in mind these tips, can help increase a nap’s effectiveness and benefits for you, leaving you feeling refreshed.

The Great Pizza Debate The Big Apple Loves Its Pizza

Chloe Kozal There’s a reason why New York styles are more accessible to purchase around the world. In terms of American pizzas, New York style pizza is simply healthier, easier to eat, more traditional than other pizzas, such as Chicago style pizza.

While arguably one does not always try to eat the healthiest pizza, people who need to watch their calorie intake or eat pizza guilt free can enjoy New York style pizza more than the gluttonous, heavily portioned Chicago style pizza. On average, New York style is around 275 calories per slice, whereas Chicago style is over 650 calories per slice. Chicago style isn’t just a meal, it’s half of the average daily calorie count!

New York style pizza is more flexible; for example, you can add a different sauce such as pesto. For people who like a limited amount of tomato sauce, the more proportional pizza sauce in the New York style is preferable, especially if you don’t like the Chicago style pizza, which feels like you’re practically eating pizza sauce out of the saucepan. For me, I don’t want to feel like I’m eating a loaf of bread with tomato soup on top of it.

New York style pizza is simply easier to eat than Chicago style. This cannot be disputed. New York style pizza is meant for eating when you’re watching the big game and hanging out with friends. Chicago style takes away from the experience because you’re worried about spilling the sauce all over yourself. When you eat a slice of New York pizza, you’re travelling around the world in one bite due to its American and Italian Neapolitan heritage. The next time you are craving pizza, remember the City that Never Sleeps and order a pie. It's the best!

Chi-Town Not Shy About Pizza

Kaitlin Shiple While New York pizza might be more well known, Chicago deep dish pizza is a hidden gem that has everything a pizza lover would want. Endless room for toppings, sauce, and cheese, this style of pizza will not disappoint.

Some could argue that New York’s thin slices are healthier, but if you’re eating pizza, are you really worried about the health factor? New York pizza’s are also known to be dripping with grease, so they cannot be that much healthier than Chicago’s deep dish.

Thin slices are easier to eat, but they get cold more quickly, and because of the size, it will take more slices to fill you up. Pizza should be a meal, not a snack. Deep dish pizza is more of a meal than New York thin crust will ever be. New York’s slices are so thin that the crust is lost over half of the time, but with Chicago’s pie-like structure, you have plenty of crust to even out the amount of cheese, toppings, and sauce a deep dish can hold.

Speaking of toppings, the amount of pepperoni, sausage, onion, and other fan favorite toppings that can be fit into a Chicago deep dish are endless. New York’s slices aren’t durable enough to even support that many toppings.

Pizza itself is not normally a food that would be considered formal. With a New York style pizza, that is true.

Americans eat thin crust pizza with their hands, but Chicago’s deep dish pizza has to be eaten on a plate with a fork and knife. This means people can have pizza at formal events without making the occasion too casual.

So the next time you crave pizza, take your cue from the Windy City and order the deep dish pizza that will stand up to your hunger.

Wow– it’s been a crazy year so far. Because it’s so crazy, sometimes all we need right now is something as silly as a pizza debate, to be reminded of a great Mr. NDA show, or to be excited for our future play. I hope that you are doing well, and remember that the NDA community is praying for you. ~ Chloe Kozal

Opinion and editorial

Thank You During 9/11, we often heard the phrase “Never Forget.” Today we need to never forget the lessons of this current crisis.

All the good deeds and realizations about our world as we know it are essential to remember for our future after the coronavirus pandemic. Yes, we will have a future without the virus! However, we mustn’t completely revert to all our old ways.

We should never forget how essential our state governments were to keeping us safe, especially our Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. We shouldn’t forget how people in Spain showed solidarity for their medical workers by clapping for them together every night. We shouldn’t forget that the most important employees are actually those who are the backbone of modern life and the American economy, such as grocery workers, technicians, journalists, and maintenance workers.

We need to appreciate all those people who risk their lives everyday to make our world still run smoothly even during this crazy time.

In our own community, we will never forget what it felt like to go from learning at NDA to distance learning and how hard our teachers, staff members and administrators worked to help make sure that we could still learn.

Oftentimes, major world events seem to define a generation. However, the coronavirus has affected all of us, not just Gen Z. These few weeks have undoubtedly been some of the most weird and most memorable times for all of us.

In these times, we shouldn’t forget how blessed we are with modern technology.

Even though it might be annoying at times, all of the Instagram challenges, news updates and constant communication shows that we are truly a social society.

Social distance doesn’t mean that we can’t still find connections with others. We can make connections with people every day, even if it’s when you show all of your followers that you can’t do a push up!

According to a Facebook post by an alum, the Class of 1997 voted to name the NDA Eagle “Izzy” based on Isaiah 40:31 NIV:

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like Eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Finding the Best in Tough Times Chloe Kozal The statistics are sobering. We listen avidly to cable news, praying for good news, a cure of coronavirus. Nothing seems normal. Where is the good?

Here’s a list of some good things that are happening: * According to The New York Times, animal shelters in New York and Texas have received a large response from people interested in fostering pets. Fostering allows humans to de-stress and have a new companion during social distancing, and can help the foster pet.

According to the CDC, there is no evidence that pets can receive or transmit coronavirus, so there’s no risk of harm. * You can visit thousands of art museums while sitting on your couch with Google Arts and Culture virtual tours, which have amazing museums such as the MoMA, Getty Museum, the Met, Frida Khalo’s museum and other international art museums (Robb Report). * Workers at IKEA in Sweden found 50,000 face masks at one of their storage facilities and donated them all to a local hospital. * Water in Venice’s infamous canals has cleared due to “less tourists, motorboats and nitrogen dioxide pollution” has improved due to coronavirus restrictions (CNBC).

Animals, such as small fish, are visible in the water and swans have appeared.

While the water quality itself hasn’t improved in Venice, air quality improved due to the lack of boat traffic. * The New York Times is allowing free access to all of its coronavirus articles, just make a NYT account. * British painter David Hockney, 82, revealed a new painting of daffodils entitled Do remember they can’t cancel the spring to lift people’s spirits.

SJJ Junior Claims Crown as Mr. NDA 2020 Lauren DIonyssiou Getting back into the groove of going to school after Christmas break is no doubt a difficult task, but for the girls of NDA, it signals the countdown to one of the most iconic events of the year; the annual Mr. NDA show.

The Mr. NDA competition has been a school tradition for 14 years, bringing together the girls of Notre Dame Academy and the boys of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint John’s Jesuit high schools in a fun night of competition.

“MR. NDA is a student organized show initiated by a group of juniors in the spring of 2006. The girls wanted a fun, lighthearted event to showcase the great guys of SFS and SJJ along with the girls of NDA,” Mr. NDA Moderator Mrs. Aimee Parks said.

A core committee of about 20-24 girls are involved in casting the boys, selecting the music, writing the script, working behind the scenes, and much more.

The competition consists of three categories: Casual Wear, Question & Answer and Overall Appeal, which contributes to the contestant’s overall score. The audience narrows it down from twelve boys to four by voting during intermission. There is also a non-judged portion of the evening that includes a Team Talent Competition and Formal Wear.

“I was the moderator for the last nine years and Mr. NDA is one of the most fun things I’ve been involved in during my almost 13 years at NDA. I have developed such great relationships with many of the students involved in the show and see many of them long after they graduate,” Mrs. Parks said.

The show appeals to all ages. “Readers should come because as an NDA student they should have a voice in choosing who MR. NDA will be. One of the best parts of coming to MR. NDA is that we strongly encourage audience participation and it’s always a good time,” Mrs. Parks said.

Q: What was your initial reaction when they announced you won?

A: “I was definitely not ready to hear my name. It was a complete shock to me but I remember a strong feeling of accomplishment and gratefulness because I knew any one of those guys up there with me deserved it as much as I did. The biggest thing was complete shock. I think I tried to say something when Sid crowned me but no words came out.”

Q: What do you hope to accomplish as the new Mr. NDA? A: “As the new Mr. NDA, I would like to help promote Notre Dame and show people how amazing the school is and how incredibly sweet the girls are. I would also like to get NDA and SJJ to do something together (pep rally) and get the two schools more involved.”

Q: What prompted you to compete?

A: “When I was in middle school, I went to the show to watch my brother’s friends participate, so it was always in the back of my head. Then a few of my friends did it last year and always talked about how fun it was. I also love trying new things and am a big people person.”

Q: How did the experience affect you?

A: “Mr. NDA showed me that going out of my comfort zone is not a bad

A: “Outside of school I play baseball and water polo and do service weekly.”

Q: Anything else you want to add/want people to know?

A: “Thank you all for being so supportive and kind. I always enjoy meeting girls from NDA because you're all so sweet and fun to be around.”

Mrs. Parks sees Mr. NDA as a tradition that will continue.

“We say at the beginning of every year that we want this to be one of their best high school memories. We often have kids return to the show year after year, so I like to think that we are achieving that goal,” Mrs. Parks said.

“I think it’s still such a big hit because it really showcases how great all of the kids involved are and just how funny, accomplished and talented they all are.”

Spring Play Still in Planning Stages

Noelle Albright “The show must go on” as they say, and that is no exception for Notre Dame Academy’s spring play production of Splendid Productions’ Macbeth.

With the fate of many extracurricular activities in limbo, the spring play is still set to happen thanks to the flexibility of the show and access to online resources.

“Although we have no firm details as of yet, we are planning on the performance.

Both Mrs. Sanders and myself can’t wait to bring this show to the stage!” Producer Mrs. Jean (Christ) Walker ’82 said.

As of now, Mrs. Sanders hopes the show will take place sometime around the end of May to early June. With limited in-person contact, some meetings and rehearsals will be held through video chatting.

“We are really, very lucky to have such an amazing group of people in our cast and crew (not to mention our director), all people willing to make time in their day and come together to be able to perform under the current stresses,” sophomore Ava Bowers said.

Girls Find Ways to Cope with Quarantine Noelle Albright With in-person classes suspended, many students are spending all day, everyday inside their homes.

If you’re sick of being trapped inside four walls, try getting outside!

You can go for a run, have a picnic in the yard, play with your pets, play on the old swing set in your yard, or walk your dog!

If you plan to go outside, make sure you to keep a 6-foot distance for safety.

“Since I’m stuck at home for a while now and get kind of bored, I like to take my dogs on walks. It’s good exercise for me and for them, and I get some fresh air,” junior Amanda Deku said.

If staying inside and escaping technology is more your jam, consider cleaning your room, putting together a box of things to donate after the crisis, building a fort, having a spa day, reading a book, cooking without a recipe or trying some arts and crafts.

try binge watching a new show, doing a photoshoot, watching movies from your childhood, becoming Tik Tok famous, going through old emails, having a family movie night or going

through your ‘watch later’ folder on YouTube.

“During the quarantine, some of the things I like to do to keep me busy are go on a walk with my dog in the morning, spend some time catching up on my favorite Netflix shows and baking. Doing these activities help keep my mind off the virus going on outside and remind me to stay positive,” freshman Kiana Nel said.

Once the social distancing order has been removed and it is time to return to normal life, consider visiting the following places in Toledo: a Mud Hens game, Toledo Botanical Gardens, Toledo Art Museum, Toledo Zoo, Imagination Station, Toledo-Lucas County Main Library, Handmade Toledo or R&B Bubble Tea. These are places that have been hard hit by the stay-at-home order.

After being inside for multiple weeks, it’s likely you will be even more thankful for the public places that people enjoy so much.

The Rant:

Out of the Blue Kaitlin Shiple Recently there have been a lot of things going on that have been stressful and really hard to digest. We’ve been let down in a lot of ways, and it is difficult to accept disappointment.

Dealing with disappointment is never easy, but there are definitely ways to start breaking down what’s bothering you.

Meditation and journaling are both ways to give yourself a well deserved break. Both are great ways to get your mind off things. Peaceful scenarios in relaxed environments, like outside with the sun shining, always help bring peace to mind. Taking care of yourself to make sure you're in the best situation you can be in should be a main priority.

Take a break from looking at the news. The media is trying to bring you updates on what is going on in the world, but it is not always positive. Sometimes stepping away from the world news will help you gather your thoughts and process everything going on around you. Focusing on the news constantly leaves you overwhelmed because you’re constantly seeing problems you can’t fix, and that is really hard. If you feel like taking a day to collect yourself and your thoughts, that’s good. Take care of yourself first.

Make your thoughts and ideas heard by talking with people. Getting closure from others who are feeling the same way is a good way to express your ideas and clear your mind.

When we just sit and think to ourselves, our thoughts tend to be not entirely developed. Talking with others helps you form solid opinions and ideas on what is going on around you.

Reminding yourself that the world is still a good place with good people is important as well. There are bad people and bad situations, but there are also still plenty of good ones.

Focusing on the good aspects of humanity can bring up morale and help you to realize how beautiful life can be.
