Good Mental Health

Resources Encourage Girls to Prioritize Self-Care Regan Carnes Mental wellness has an impact on every aspect of our lives. Whether it be thinking positively or eating healthier, everyone is capable of improving her mental health.

The World Health Organization defines mental wellness as: “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”

Teens may experience their own challenges to mental health.

The Journal of Abnormal Psychology concludes that one in five teens suffer from mental disorders.

Within the last year, 20 percent of teenage girls have experienced “major depression.” Between 2009 and 2017, severe depression in 16 and 17 year olds increased by 69%. The publication identifies this drastic increase in mental unwellness as an “epidemic.”

Social pressures and booked schedules cause teenagers to be emotionally vulnerable and susceptible to mental illness. It is important that teenagers dedicate time towards their well being because it affects everyday life.

Internal negativity can truly influence physical health, familial and romantic relationships, academics, career, and even financial status.

“Achieving mental wellness is a journey, and being aware of our wellness and taking care of it promotes happiness. It also helps us be more accepting of ourselves and encourages awareness of the world around us,” counseling intern Ms. Carli Alaura said.

“Mental wellness is important because we need to take time for ourselves to be stable and live a healthy life,” sophomore Grace Jeffer said.

Maintaining mental wellness is essential to success in each part of our lives, and there are several ways to achieve this sense of fulfillment and happiness.

One way to increase mental wellness is through physical activity. Exercise may not seem like the most fun or relaxing method, but staying active boosts self esteem and can lower depression.

Eating healthy can also increase mental wellness. Treating the body right can have lasting effects when it comes to levels of anxiety.

“If we are not mentally healthy, then we are not fully healthy. I also believe in the power of the mind and body connection. Mental health can affect physical health and vice versa,” counselor Ms. Jane Hoffman said.

Exploring your personal hobbies and passions can certainly help to increase your mental wellness and overall happiness. Participating in activities you love can make you feel relaxed and joyful.

“Counselors are a great resource for mental wellness.

They can help with understanding where you are in regard to mental health and how to move forward.”

“Finding some coping strategies that work for you when times get tough are so important! I utilize journaling, connecting with music, professional counseling, prayer, and gratitude lists when I need to focus on some self care,” counselor Ms. Abby Beham said.

“I enjoy reading, so I use it as a calming technique, as well as a way to pam-

per myself, by buying a new book,” Ms. Alaura said.

“I take naps frequently so I can catch up on my sleep and stay alert and focused when it matters,” senior Claire Lepkowski said.

It is important to know there are resources both in person and online when you are struggling mentally.

“Some resources for mental wellness are NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the Calm app, SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services), and your counselors!” Ms. Beham said.

“Counselors are a great resource for mental wellness. They can help with understanding where you are in regard to mental health and how to move forward,” Ms. Alaura said.

“Check out the Counselor Google Classroom for great resources to help you maintain wellness,” Ms. Hoffman said.

Whether it be a support system such as your parents and close friends, or organizations like SAMHSA, there is always someone to talk to.

“I think it is important to remember that each person will have their own methods for achieving mental wellness and that is a continual process that may need to be adjusted from time to time, and that is quite alright. Find things that make you happy and make them a part of your life,” Ms. Alaura said.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Unless I’m in My Car Regan Carnes Even though the ground hog’s prediction of winter seems a little iffy, one can never rule out the chance of a late winter/early spring snowfall in Ohio. Therefore, it makes sense to be prepared, especially when traveling by car.

There are several precautionary measures one can take to prepare for being stuck in the car during a snowstorm.

Before you leave home, always check the weather forecast. If conditions look dangerous for driving, consider staying home.

To be properly prepared, it is important to pack your car with the essentials.

Store items such as: sleeping bags, gloves, boots, hats, scarves, medicine, a shovel, a first aid kit, a phone charger, and jumper cables.

“If you know you are going to out driving during a snowstorm or if there is a chance of bad weather, you should al-

ways be prepared by doing the following: always keep a snow brush with a scraper [and] a blanket in your car,” NDA Head of Maintenance Mr. Steve Demski said.

It is also a good idea to keep food in the car. Global Outdoor Emergency Support recommends foods high in carbs and fats, such as nuts or candy bars. These types of snacks can provide energy and generate warmth.

“I keep so many snacks in my car, which would definitely come in handy if I was stuck during a snowstorm,” senior Parker Boyd said.

If you run out of water while you are stuck, exit the car and drink melted snow.

Fill your gas tank as frequently as possible. If you are stranded for several hours, you’ll want your car to be fueled.

“Try to keep your gas tank full. You

never know when you may become stuck in traffic or bad weather,” Mr. Demski said.

If the car is stopped, try not to exit the car. It will be extremely cold outside, putting you at risk of hypothermia. Even leaving the car to get help is a risk, as you could get lost.

“Always stay with your vehicle. If you were to leave your vehicle during a storm, it is very easy to become disoriented and lose your direction,” Mr. Demski said.

The only reason to leave your car would be to check the car’s tailpipe. Make sure it is clear so that you do not suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Only turn the car on about once every hour for ten minutes. Any longer will waste gas.

AAA also suggests making your car visible by keeping the dome light on or using flares to make it easier to see you.

Warming Temperatures Bring World Concerns Chelsea Fall The world has experienced environmental changes due to climate change. It can cause increased precipitation, intense heat, and reduced snowfall which may lead to long term consequences.

The environmental changes over the past years will create a pattern of future weather. If something isn’t done about these changes, then there might be irreparable changes with great consequences on everyday life.

According to news.un.org, scientists presented a report to the United Nations in February about the impact of climate change on people and the planet, saying the world could experience, among other things, deadly heatwaves and floods over the next two decades.

On the website epa.gov/climateindicators, of the biggest changes is the rising global temperatures. This affects all countries and is one of the biggest concerns for the future.

The increase in temperature is causing heat waves and intense storms which create big problems for people in developing countries who do not have access

to air conditioning, causing illness for many countries' vulnerable population.

This can also damage crops which can increase the number of people who die from starvation.

The weather continues to change as drier places get more and more rainfall every year. This is caused by the oceans overheating and evaporating more water than they typically do.

This is one explanation for why many southern states have had more rain and snow in the past few years.

This creates problems because many places are not prepared for the amount of precipitation they are getting. This adds to the problem of crop damage due to soil erosion and flooding in these areas.

According to epa.gov, some changes can be seen in our own country. There has been a shift in the transition between many of the seasons, and most of the seem to be getting shorter. Summer is the only season unaffected with temperature staying the same for longer.

This is a part of climate change in the U.S. and how people can see it affect-

ing everyday life, even now when the consequences are not shown to be as extreme as they actually are. This is not only happening in the U.S. but all over the world, and soon the environmental issues will be very clear for all to see.

These changes cause many problems in the current shifting of seasons. As summer gets longer and people have to wait longer for snow, there will be many issues with the slow changing seasons.

Pollination could be thrown off and that could cause problems within ecosystems. This also could affect when the flowers bloom and certain environmental factors that could change the way seasons work forever.

The climate change problem has begun to change more than small weather problems According to edf.org “It's not too late to slow the pace of climate change as long as we act today. With your help, we can attack this challenge."

Experts maintain the effects of climate change are worsening each day and without help soon the world could face serious consequences.

Hitting the Road in a Self-Driving Car Moving Forward

Grzybowski The pro case for self-driving cars is a difficult one to argue: artificial intelligence has not yet advanced far enough to produce truly intelligent cars, so my argument is in the assumption that it will. With this disclaimer, the excitement of a world with self-driving cars can’t be underestimated.

Many scientists hope self-driving cars will be able to provide a solution to one of the most pressing global issues: global warming. Self-driving cars will inevitably lead to driverless car taxi services, and as these advance in efficiency and use, car ownership won’t be the standard of transportation any longer. This also gets rid of the use of large parking lots, meaning more efficient use of land.

Driverless cars, at their peak, wouldn’t need a licensed driver: this means that independent transportation for the elderly and people with disabilities becomes accessible in a way it never was before.

As driving becomes less and less driver-focused, everyone becomes a passenger. Driving and transportation will become a time for leisure rather than stress. Time lost to a long commute transforms into leisure time to sleep or read a book.

One of the most difficult challenges of self-driving cars, however, is giving them the same common sense humans use to navigate everyday driving situations. This is a major detractor from the case of a future with self-driving cars, but I believe with the momentum of investment and research that exists, this reality is achievable.

On this condition, my final point is self-driving cars will present not only a cleaner, more relaxed future, but a safer future. As artificial intelligence in cars is further developed, the advantage presented by a ‘driver’ that is never distracted, and, therefore, less likely to cause accidents, outweighs any other argument.

Reversing Course Chelsea Fall

Self-driving cars are a new, efficient way of getting around that doesn't include drivers. However, are they really as safe as they seem? Numerous studies show that self-driving cars increase the risk of accidents because drivers are not paying attention to the road. These cars are also more expensive which may cause more harm than good for those who have these cars.

These cars also open the ability for people to hack into them which puts many people at a security risk.

Self-driving cars seem to be the newest and most effective way to drive; however, these cars are more prone to accidents, and cars cannot be taught to make life or death decisions. According to gerberinjurylaw.com, self-driving cars were involved in 9.1 crashes per million miles traveled in comparison to 4.1 from regular cars. These cars are not able to make the choices that other people can and may lead to serious injury.

On average, a self-driving car is $10,000 more than a regular car would be. This means that it could put more people in a tough financial situation which could impact how they live their lives. The maintenance of these cars can add more financial burden because of the intense technological fixes that may be needed. Overall, they just add more costs than if people were to keep normal cars.

Self-driving cars also add a security risk. Hackers can hack into your car and, with advanced technology, can make the car’s AI become “blind” to pedestrians. This puts everyone around you at risk when driving your car. Hackers can also change your car’s attention to road speed limit signs which can change your car’s speed in a moment.

Overall, self-driving cars add more dangers than they do good. They can create many problems for not only you but also the people around you and can make for some difficult situations that are hard to solve.

Editor’s Corner Hello, Everyone! Thank you for reading the third issue of the Vista. I think that we have a lot for very important topics in here that I think everyone should know about. We wanted to incorporate Black History Month and Women’s History Month into one issue so that we could see how they both are changing our world today. We have a guest writer, Jordyn Bailey, who write an incredible article and I'm happy that we got to show off her talents in this issue. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it and I hope that you are finishing the third quarter strong!

Valuing Black History Month This is a guest editorial written by Journalism III student Jordyn Bailey.

The simplest way to explain why Black History Month is important is the truth that Black History is American history. Unfortunately, despite the struggles, triumphs, and all experiences in between of Black Americans being deeply ingrained in our country’s origin, we always get the short end of the stick in history textbooks.

With that being said, although I enjoy Black History Month and emphasize its pertinence, February should not be the only time of year where there is a national focus on Black people.

Neither should it be a time where we sing the praises of Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, or Harriet Tubman.

Young actress Marsai Martin comments on how she approaches this within the entertainment industry: “When you come into my office, don’t give me this — I don’t do no Black pain. If it’s Black pain I don’t go for it because there’s so many films and projects about that, so that’s not who I am.”

I believe this sentiment applies to Black History Month as well. Just as

our history deserves more than 28 days of acknowledgement, it is not limited to slavery and the Civil Rights Movement.

That’s one of the reasons I appreciate Black History Month— because it highlights more stories of Black women and men trailblazing in their respective fields.

Specifically, this is why African American Club chose the theme of ‘Black Girl Magic’ this year to celebrate.

With attending an all-girls school, we wanted to empower our members to strive for greatness by showing the beauty, innovation, intelligence, and strength of the Black women that came before them.

As I am approaching the end of my senior year at NDA, I would hope that it would seek to integrate the value of learning about Black History all year-round. Especially for Black students, being able to dive deeper into our history gives us the pride we need to thrive as women of vision; therefore, we need the support and resources to do so.

Women, Speak Up! Chelsea Fall In times like today, we see great changes in women's rights and the leap in rights that have grown over the past decades.

The women of our past made sacrifices in order to expand their women’s rights movements into today. Women like Lucy Stone and Susan B. Anthony paved the way for us with their efforts to broaden our privileges as women.

Now that we have expanded our rights we can see the cracks in our current system and see what rights we must fight for in our own women's movement.

In today's world, even though our rights have come a long way, we still see some things that could bring great changes in the world.

Around the world we still see women without easy access to education. We see women who struggle to be seen as equals to any man in their professions. And we see women who are targeted because they have learned to balance their careers while also having a family.

These are easy fixes that can go a long way and could break down walls that were unnecessarily put up. These struggles are things that we still see today and are still changes that we could fix in a new age women’s movement.

Today we use the power built up by women of our past to build up the rights for the women in our future.

The voice of women has become stronger, so in our new age women’s movement, we are able to use the voices of women who have seen today's world’s struggles.

Sharing the stories of our experiences can help create new movements in our rights as women and could help to share how these have affected past generations.

It shows our movement is necessary and what could happen if we choose to change the way the world works in terms of women.

Our women’s movement would look like ones that have been happening in the past couple decades.

However, the changes we make could alter the way women live and brighten the future of many women that are growing up in today's world.

Women’s voices hold more power in today’s society than ever before so we can use this to build up a generation of women who can fix the wrongs of women that are currently in society.

SFS Knight Crowned 2022 Mr. NDA Regan Carnes On Jan. 8, St. Francis de Sales senior Jack Rust was crowned Mr. NDA. “I was shocked and so honored to be chosen,” Jack said.

The show this year was unique and original in several aspects. The core team, consisting of about 20 girls, gave the competition a theme: Saturday Night Live. The event had SNL and New York City themed props, references, and songs.

The addition of a theme also came with its challenges.

“Since the script was written in the style of Saturday Night Live, it had a lot of skits, which meant a lot of transitions.

These skits and transitions had a lot of music changes and sound effects that our sound booth crew had to keep up with.

Without them, the show would not have run smoothly, and we are thankful for all that they did to help make the show a success!” co-moderator Mrs. Jackie Terrill said.

“Quickly changing into our tuxedos in the green room during intermission [was challenging]! I still do not know how all of the guys did it,” Jack said.

“The most challenging part of the show was having the confidence to speak in front of a sold-out crowd, but having Jack

by my side made it 100 times easier,” Alli said.

Running the show smoothly and successfully took lots of preparation, rehearsal, and dedication. The cast and crew overcame all setbacks and kept the crowd entertained.

“It takes dedication, a positive attitude, and confidence to be a part of Mr. NDA,” Alli said.

The show consisted of several events,

such as a skit from the core team that referenced popular SNL characters and jokes. An opening monologue and introductions followed. The contestants and escorts then danced to “Welcome to New York” by Taylor Swift.

The show also featured a casual wear competition, where contestants and escorts dressed up in vacation attire. There was also a dance battle between the contestants and core team members, to the songs “Suit & Tie” by Justin Timberlake and “Finesse” by Bruno Mars and Cardi B. The NDA dance team performed, serving as SNL’s musical guest. The final event was a formal dance to Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”

The show was full of memorable moments, but crowning the new Mr. NDA certainly was the most exciting.

“In every rehearsal, Jack pitched in to help wherever he saw a need from stage setup to moving props, etc. He was always so positive and encouraging to everyone. Jack was a well deserving and gracious winner,” Mrs. Terrill said.

“I was extremely proud of [Jack]! He is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met and I feel there is no one more deserving of this title besides him,” Jack’s escort and senior Alli Saba said.

Swifties Find New Club ‘All Too Well’ Mary K. Grzybowski Now that NDA is allowing clubs to meet at lunch again this year, there have been a number of new pop culture clubs.

Among these is the Taylor Swift club, whose popularity reflects Taylor’s own huge fanbase.

According to Club President Carly McMahon, sophomore, the club attracts around 70 to 80 girls for each meeting, with about 130 girls in total. For reference, this is about the size of the Class of 2022. This means about 1 in every 4 students at NDA is a member of Taylor Swift Club, an impressive statistic for a new club, though not altogether surprising given Taylor’s increase in popularity.

Carly says that she was “blown away by how many people joined our Google Classroom within the first 24 hours.” She attributes the club’s success to Taylor’s popularity, of course. “Her music is insanely popular and well liked, especially by teenage girls.”

If you hadn’t heard about the up-and -coming Taylor Swift Club during the first semester, you probably heard about it during the Mardi Gras festival. The club’s $300 value basket was one of the most talked-about and anticipated raffle items.

It included a record player, albums, and even a copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. This is an obscure reference to one of Taylor’s favorite books, and a tribute to the devotion and deep knowledge of the club’s members, who compiled and funded the basket with club dues.

For those who haven’t had a chance to attend a meeting, there are still exciting events coming up this year. In March, there will be a NCAA March Madness bracket-inspired tournament to decide the best of Taylor’s music, as well as a Women’s History Month trivia night.

Although enjoying Taylor’s music

and having fun as a fan is a huge part of the club, they will also be delving into deeper issues, like sexual assault.

“Taylor Swift is passionate about raising awareness against sexual abuse and harassment, and we’d like to follow in her footsteps to make a difference in our community,” Carly said.

So, why are Swifties such devoted fans? It’s partly because Taylor has been such a part of many girls’ childhoods.

“I think I knew all the words to “You Belong With Me” before I knew how to tie my shoes,” Carly said.

This childhood interest in Taylor Swift was the beginning for Keira Spielvogel, sophomore, as well. She says she first became a fan of Swift with the Red Album and because her sister is a fan.

For both long-term fans and recent converts, Taylor Swift Club can be a place for girls with a common interest to find friends, have fun, listen to music, and, of course ,talk about Taylor.

Women Say ‘I Do’ but ‘I Don’t’ to New Name Chelsea Fall When you get married, you get to choose whether to keep or change your last name. The societal norm is to change your name to your husband’s once you get married, but that trend is changing.

An article on investopedia.com looked at the circumstances in which women might choose to keep their name.

Women earning their doctorate or getting married later in life may choose to keep their name.

“I have a plan to go to med school and go into neurosurgery, and if I stick to that plan, I want to show people my accomplishments with my own name,” said senior Sadie Evener.

Many people view their names as part of their identities, so changing it can feel like they are losing part of themselves.

Women today are very high achievers, and they become experts in their fields.

They are proud of all the hard work that they have done in order to earn those

accolades. These women choose to keep their names because they often achieved their degrees before they were married.

“Keeping my name means a lot to me because then more credit goes to me when I finish my work,” said senior Grace Sanford. They want to keep the name that they worked with as they go through their career.

Last names for women is one way to stay connected to their own family’s name.

“I kept my name because my family didn't have any boys to carry it on, and I wanted to hang on to it a little longer,” English teacher Mrs. Lindsay Sutton said.

Women use it in order to pay a tribute to their family and remain connected to them in a new way.

Degrees are not the only reason that a woman may keep her name when they get married. The number of wom-

en who keep their name when they get married has been growing in the past few decades.

Many women see this as a way to keep their identity when they get married and to not create a more important person in their household, perhaps creating a better relationship.

There are even cases where a couple will decide to take on a surname that is new for both of them.

Women’s names are their identities, and they often want to keep it for many reasons. Although many women also choose not to change their last name, it is important to see both sides of it and see that to some people it can be very important.

If someone is considering changing her name, it is important to fully recognize all the possible effects it might have on her life now and in the future.

Ultimately, it must be a decision she can completely embrace.

Sophomores’ Mardi Gras to Aid Aurora Project Mary K. Grzybowski Every year, NDA starts off the Lenten season with a Mardi Gras fundraiser.

This year, sophomores chose to donate to the Aurora Project, which focuses on women and their children who are affected by homelessness, substance abuse, and other difficult issues.

Sophomore Class President Siona Naik says the charity was chosen based on “its mission to help homeless women and children with housing and everyday life.”

It’s true that many organizations exist for helping those affected by homelessness, but the Aurora Project is unique in its commitment to the process of healing and addressing the root of the problems these families face.

The Aurora Project provides housing in three stages: transitional, permanent supportive, and permanent housing.

In the transitional stage, women and their children live in separate rooms, but with shared living spaces, benefiting from proximity to a supportive environment and the consistent supply of childcare resources provided by the Aurora Project.

It is here that the families benefit especially from case management that is extremely individualized to help address

the root cause of their homelessness, and help address it.

The second stage is permanent supportive housing, where the family lives in their own apartment, but still under the care of case management. Finally, they move on to permanent housing, which is complete independent living -though help is always available to those who reach out.

“The money [from the fundraiser] will be part of helping families find a safe environment,” Siona said.

According to the Aurora Project’s website, the majority of funds (85.7%)

goes to the first stage: transitional housing.

One of the greatest strengths of the Aurora Project is not only in the housing, but the programs offered to the residents and past residents. These include classes on healthy relationship strategies, reading and language development, nutrition, job skills training, employment readiness, computer literacy, GED tutoring, parent education, financial management, life skills, and more.

Since 85% of women who benefit from the Aurora Project are referred there from substance abuse treatment facilities, there are many resources, classes, and support groups for substance abuse and relapse prevention.

Though any student who bought tickets for Mardi Gras already contributed to the Aurora Project, those who feel especially connected to their mission have the opportunity to reach out and do more.

“Students can contact a representative at the Aurora Project and let them know they are from NDA and share that they are interested in helping out,” Siona said.

Additionally, there is a wish list of ongoing donation needs. This includes alarm clocks, baby monitors, diapers, and other household supplies.

The Rant: How Much Caffeine Is Too Much for Teens?

In the past 10 years we have seen a spike in the number of teenagers drinking coffee and energy drinks. Caffeine increases alertness and this gives teenagers a boost as they see their pressure to perform well increase. This creates an unhealthy relationship that is a dependency on caffeine. However the negatives outweigh the positives and this creates an unhealthy relationship with caffeine that leaves teenagers with many long term issues.

Caffeine addiction is a problem that many teenagers face without realizing it.

The effects of caffeine withdrawal are usually pushed aside when we think about caffeine. A caffeine withdrawal has symptoms that can include headache, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and trouble concentrating. These are especially difficult symptoms to deal with for school age teenagers. They believe that they are benefitting from the good things that come with it but they don't understand the severity of a caffeine addiction.

Teenagers also don't know how to stop once they have developed the addiction.

The lack of information about the later consequences of a caffeine addiction can lead to misinformation about how many benefits you are really getting. Teenagers don't realize that continuing a caffeine addiction can lead to long term consequences on their health. Things like insomnia, high blood pressure, constant anxiety, depression are just a few of the long term effects on teens' health.

These long term effects are not the only problem that is faced by these teenagers.

Teenagers have a smaller body weight which can increase the effects of caffeine up to double the amount of a regular adult. Teenagers' bodies are also more susceptible to stress and addiction that can make their caffeine problems much worse. Overall the way a teenagers body handles caffeine outweighs the pros of drinking caffeine in the first place.

Teenagers drink caffeine because of the focus and alertness that can help them with school. However, are they really getting the help that they need?
