Podcasts Finding an Audience with NDA Girls Kaitlin Shiple Over 51 percent of the United States population listens to podcasts. The growth in podcasts has become apparent within the last 15 years, including listeners in NDA classes.

A podcast allows Internet users to download and listen to audio files from a website on their computers or other devices. The term is a combination of iPod and broadcasting, according to computer.howstuffworks.com. Usually there is no cost.

Adam Curry and David Winer created podcasts in the 1980s, but it really started to gain more popularity in 2004.

Some teachers have incorporated this technology into their teaching.

Music Technology teacher Mrs. Beth Lang, has her students make their own podcasts for class.

“Podcasts use modern tools to present information,” she said.

Mrs. Lang also encourages others to make their own podcasts. All you have to do is download a free program called Audacity on your computer and learning how to use it on your own.

“The computer should have a microphone, so recording should not be a problem for beginners,” Mrs. Lang said.

National Public Radio [NPR] is a media organization based in Washington D.C., releasing national and world news along with podcasts and music.

the essentials for girls ready for a day of learning and activities. However, girls will notice a change in the coming school year that will impact them every day, and that is the arrival of new lockers to Notre Dame’s hallways.

“We are replacing all of the lockers over the course of the next few summers. The original lockers have served the girls of NDA well, but it's time to make room for new and improved lockers,” Principal Ms. Sarah Cullum said.

Students agree they are ready for new lockers.

“The [current] lockers having two sections is great for organization, but they do tend to be pretty cramped at high density times of day!” junior Emilyn Lagger said.

“I am excited for the new lockers coming in and getting to spend one last year with my friends,” junior Ciara Geronimo said of the coming school year.

Recently, NPR offered the NPR Student Podcast Challenge.

Freshman Cimran Naik and her sister, seventh grader Siona, created and submitted their own podcast to the contest.

“We saw it on the NPR casting and just decided to go for it,” Cimran said.

The NPR Student Podcast winners will have their podcast featured on segments in either Morning Edition or A ll Things Considered.

“We listen to [podcasts] occasionally, but we really like the Moth Radio Hour podcast which is run by NPR,” Cimran said.

Another podcast is Teen News Talk which centers around current issues such as racism or cyber bullying. Each episode has a fictional, yet realistic issue or case that is discussed. All opinions are heard and considered.

Confessions of a High School Bible Teacher focuses on two teachers that work at a religious school. Most of this podcast is explaining ethics and how ideas such as war fit into faith. Subjects such as the Big Bang with faith are also discussed.

Comedian Lilly Singh Makes Late Night TV History; First Woman of Color to Host Late Night Talk Show Chloe Kozal Another chip in the glass ceiling of television history occurred in March, specifically in late night TV shows.

Ms. Lilly Singh announced on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show that she will be hosting her own late night TV show. Lilly Singh will be taking over Carson Daly’s slot at 1:30 a.m.

Her announcement was celebrated not only by Fallon and Singh, but also by fellow late night talk show host Seth Meyers.

She will create and host A Little Late With Lilly Singh on NBC. Singh is the first woman of color and first LGBT + person to ever host a late night TV show. Singh is also the first woman in 30 years to hold a late night TV slot on a major network.

The last woman to hold that position was Joan Rivers in 1988.

her life, but most notably she is an UNICEF Ambassador, YouTuber, model, actress and author.

She has collaborated in her YouTube

videos with a variety of celebrities, like Bill Gates, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Michelle Obama.

“As a person of color, it’s exciting to finally see someone that I can relate to as a late night host. I’m used to seeing white men dominate this area of television, and I think that it’s time for women to once again break the status quo. I also think that it’s refreshing to see a new perspective in late night shows ” junior Aylia Naqvi said.

“I think the show is going to be good. Lilly Singh can bring a different side to comedy and late night TV that men can’t because of different experiences!” sophomore Brynna Hastings said.

“I think that its really awesome that women, especially women of color, are now having this opportunity, and that is a step closer to equality!” freshman Robin Johnston said.

English Teachers Recommend Books for Life Reading Noelle Albright When school gets out for the summer, students frequently close the books until school starts the following autumn.

According to the State Library of Iowa, students “not only slow down their learning in the summer, but actually go into reverse and lose most of the reading skills they gained during the school year.”

Most schools combat this problem by assigning a book for students to read during their summer break.

Normally, English teachers assign a book to read over the summer with an assignment to go with it. An assessment follows on the first day of class.

However, this year the social studies teachers are assigning the summer reading to coordinate with the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which guarantees women’s right to vote.

Beyond assigned reading, English teachers want the students to recognize the fun summer reading brings.

“Summer especially is a time for students to self-select any book to read for the sheer fun or interest of it. Studies show that being able to select the book you read makes you more likely to en

joy the book and to process it after you have finished it, and that is what helps prevent summer learning loss,” Mrs. Julie Sells said.

Mrs. Jean Walker sees this as well.

“Reading keeps your brain working,” she said.

And what better way to keep your brain working than by broadening your horizon and reading one of these books recommended by NDA’s English teachers this summer?

Mrs. Lindsay Sutton Brave New World by Aldous Huxley A dystopian novel set in the future populated by genetically modified citizens, challenged by an outsider.

Mr. Chip Smith Marley & Me by John Grogan An autobiography about the 13 years he and his family spent with the loveable but poorly behaved yellow Labrador receiver.

Mrs. Laura Gallaher Educated by Tara Westover This is an autobiography of Westover’s quest for an education. She was 17 the

first time she set foot in a classroom.

Ms. Marisa Napoli The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon A novel about a boy with an autism spectrum condition who investigates the death of his neighbor’s dog.

Mrs. Kelly Wood So You Want to Talk About Race

by Ijeoma Oluo This book is a great read for anyone who wants to have a better understanding about matters of race.

Mrs. Julie Sells The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls This is Walls’ memoir that details her poverty-stricken childhood and dysfunctional parents. This book has pain and anger and redemption and love.

Mrs. Jean Walker The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Starr lives in two worlds– her poor, mostly black neighborhood and her privileged, mostly white private school. This book opens the way for discussion about racism and justice.

Debating Strategy of 4-Day School Week This Would Be Cool!

Having a four-day school week would no doubt be appealing to many girls here at Notre Dame. The positive aspects of this revised school schedule is lengthy.

For starters, it would give girls a whole extra day to complete homework, hang out with friends and even provide an extra day of work for some students.

Not only will a four-day week be beneficial for the girls, but it will also help to make the job of the administration much easier, as this could help reduce discipline referrals.

A superintendent of the Chattooga County School District in Georgia reported that in one year of having this schedule implemented, the discipline referral frequency fell 73%.

This schedule has also shown to increase attendance and overall motivation because students would only have to deal with four days of school. The Melstone School District in Montana has reported its attendance has improved up to 20% over a two-year period after switching to this schedule.

Many Notre Dame girls are involved in sports and other extracurriculars, many of which take place on Fridays. Having that Friday off school will not only provide for a less crammed schedule with school and the extracurricular right after, but girls would also not have to worry about missing any school work, including tests and projects, which can be frustrating to make up.

A lot of sporting events often take place on Thursday nights, leaving students who played or attended the game feeling very tired and less likely to pay attention in school on Friday. Having Friday off would eliminate this issue as well.

No doubt about it, implementing this schedule would make for less stress and would help to eliminate the overwhelming feeling of girls who have busy schedules.

Hearing the phrase “four-day school week” makes it seem like that weekend would be another Memorial Day weekend.

A three-day vacation, every week! While there are positive aspects to having a four-day week, the downsides outweigh the positives.

Schools that take on this type of schedule would have longer school days, which would impact sport practices and games during the week. Other schools in the league will not change the game times for one school, so student athletes would need to leave school to go to games. This would also make sports that have multiple teams need to push back practice times, not allowing the athletes to have as much time to work on homework or take on a shift at work after school.

Longer school days would also impact students who rely on school buses to transport them after school. A majority of buses need to pick up students from a variety of local schools.

Having one school in the area that runs an hour or more later would impact the whole route and potentially not allow any students from that school on the school buses.

Having an extra day off doesn’t mean students wouldn’t still have homework, maybe it would lead to an increased homework load because of the longer weekend.

Four-day weeks don’t always benefit the students’ test scores and don’t prepare them for the typical five-day work week. Studies show that the longer schools have a four-day school week have progressively lower scores in standardized testing.

Nine out of 16 school districts actually spent more money after the switch, so the idea it would help budgets is flawed.

This is because most four-day school weeks haven’t been implemented for an extended period of time, so most schools are unable to see a major change.

Girls Find Ways to Talk It Out How to Achieve Conflict Resolution at Your Lunch Table Noelle Albright Conflicts are a part of everyday life.

Whether it’s in the lunch line, the classroom, or at practice, our actions and opinions will always be opposed. That’s part of the reason our world is so special: because without our own opinions, everyone would be the same. While that might make some things easier, we are much better off with a sense of individuality.

According to Community Tool Box, conflict resolution is “a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement among them.”

The next time a conflict arises between you and your friend, the first thing to do is negotiate to try and resolve the issue. Recognize that each person is biased to her own argument and avoid increasing tension, which could cause a deeper division.

“In my experience, the best way to talk about conflicts is to talk through each side of the story and figure out each of the problems you have. Then, you can come to a mutual agreement on the conflict,” freshman Iliana Calcamuggio said.

Conflict resolution is not always about division. Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation suggests “finding and discussing points of similarity be-

tween you, such as growing up in the same region.” This will help the process of conflict resolution through association and collaborative thinking.

Even in the digital age, convenience does not supersede sincerity.

Although texting might seen like the easiest and fastest way to solve a problem, resist the urge.

“If you’re having a conflict with a friend, talk about it in person. It’s also best to wait to talk in person if you’re angry, so you won’t feel the urge to snap at them immediately.

You can tell how they might react to what you’re saying,” sophomore Carolyne Giannini said.

“I’ve never felt attacked for my political beliefs at my lunch table,” senior Mercy Torres said.

Vista Seniors Offer Advice Before They Head to College Freshmen Ada Ogbonna You are no longer a freshman! Isn't that crazy! While that is incredibly exciting, don't forget to appreciate all the wonderful experiences you had your freshman year.

It seems too often we forget how honestly fun freshman year was. It was extremely stressful but equally fun and exciting, especially trying new things and discovering new friends.

I don't remember much about my freshman year, but I do remember how much fun I genuinely had. The whole school was just a large speed dating round of me trying new things, hating some but mostly loving everything.

Sophomore year is a time to experience high school. Don't overstress yourself, make time for your friends, make new friends, SLEEP, go to football games, get your license and always say ‘Go Irish’ to Mr. Kay at the end of every class.

You can reinvent yourself because as your high school career progresses, you will figure out what you love and what you dislike and in the end appreciate the NDA community and all it has to offer to you every single day. The four years zoom by, so don't forget to breathe, sit down and just soak in all the memories because by senior year you are going to want to go back—I know I do.

Congratulations, you survived chemistry! You may not have loved chemistry (or maybe you did!), but you survived it, and that is all that matters for right now.

Give yourselves a pat on the back for all your accomplishments this year!

Now that you are feeling proud, I want you to take a step back and reflect on how far you've come. You will soon be upperclasswomen, and you are excited, but realize that with big girl pants come big girl responsibilities.

The Class of 2021 is so capable and smart and will create the next generation of NDA upperclasswomen because not only are you are resilient, but you are also Bold, Brilliant, Beautiful and Blessed (sorry, I had to do it one last time).

The world is at your feet, and as you get your class ring and plan events like prom for your junior year, know there are underclasswomen now looking up to you.

You are the new role models of NDA, and whatever comes your way, you will handle it with strength and courage! Be the best junior class NDA has ever seen, and please, be smarter than the squirrels because at your age, I most certainly was not.

It's finally your turn to rock the blue senior shirts and run the school! Senior year is so special, and it is all over in the blink of an eye. As you apply for colleges and anxiously prepare for the road ahead, it is easy to get wrapped up in the future instead of focusing on the present. In the midst of the chaos of filling out the Common App and then receiving acceptance letters, take time to focus on what's in front of you now.

Spend time with friends and family that you will dearly miss in a year. Enjoy leading your sports team, eating lunch everyday with your best friends, strolling through the hallways in plaid, and showing up to school everyday in a messy bun without a care in the world. Cherish all of high school’s lasts and make the most of every little event because all these seemingly small moments make the school year extremely memorable.

Don’t be afraid to get involved in new things. Step out of your comfort zone and get involved because NDA has so much to offer, and senior year is the perfect time to make memories that will stick with you forever. Although it may be a challenge, stay focused throughout the whole year and finish strong.

Take every moment in and make senior year one to remember.
