he clocks go forward at the end of March. The Winter Solstice has ended, the earth is awakening after those drab post-Christmas months and Easter is upon us once again. The name Easter actually derives from a pagan Spring goddess called Eostre, reputedly a Germanic version of the Scandinavian Frigga, a fertility goddess and the wife of Odin. And Spring is the season of fertility and rebirth, when pagan ceremonies and rituals were performed to re-awaken the earth and provoke the crops to grow high and animals to breed abundantly. Back in the days when ours was an agrarian society, the coming of Spring was cause for celebration. The seeds were in the ground, and the time had come for revels and ribaldry. In the peasant mind the mysterious rebirth of plant life had to be encouraged by all manner of pagan rituals and customs, many of them bawdy and sexual. In our modern society with its technological advances, we seem to have lost our will to celebrate. Perhaps the big reasons – the seasonal and the spiritual reasons – for celebration no longer seem relevant in the 21st century. Instead, we wallow in nostalgia and commemorate the anniversaries of all manner of national and international events with countless TV programmes and newspaper supplements. But rarely do we let our hair down and celebrate communally although we might have a drink too many on New Year’s Eve. A little bit of rebirth might do us all some good. This Easter why not resist all temptation to traipse the superstore aisles, mow the lawn and flop down in front of the TV. Instead, get together with friends and neighbours and do something different, something out of the ordinary, something joyful. In other words, celebrate! For over 600 years Saint George has been the patron saint of England and we celebrate the anniversary of his death on 23rd April, England’s national day. In reality most folk in Visitorland don’t celebrate it and the 23rd will be much the

same as any other Tuesday. Most of us won’t even wear a red rose, England’s national flower, since it’s too early in the year for many to be in bloom. Admittedly the St George and the Dragon legend takes some believing – it’s the stuff of mummers plays and pantomime rather than a potent generator of national pride and celebration. Despite rather than because of St George, we need a national day when the whole of England can unite in celebrating our great country and what it means to be English – but not a day for Little Englanders to display their xenophobia and hoist the drawbridge in the face of mainland Europe and the countries and peoples beyond it. England has much to be proud of, much to celebrate. It’s by no means perfect but it scores very highly compared with many other countries. It’s something we should show and share with the rest of the world. NN.

Changing Seasons: Recent work by Kate Lynch & James Meiklejohn at The Jerram Gallery, Sherborne from Saturday 13th April – Wednesday 1st May

Kate Lynch is holding a two-man show along with James Meiklejohn entitled ‘Changing Seasons’ at The Jerram Gallery, Half Moon Street, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 3LN from Saturday 13th April to Wednesday 1st May 2019. There are 40 paintings in the exhibition with prices ranging from £600 – £3,000. For this exhibition Kate has focused less on the paintings being a historical record and more about building a relationship with the

people she meets along the way who have welcomed her and talked about their lives. She is committed to celebrating and honouring their lives by highlighting their old traditions, old family ways and for being part of the rural community. In a nutshell, the theme of the show has morphed from farmers to gardeners with many journeys inbetween. Somerset farms offer a rich and varied seam of visual imagery, from the running of the ewes and lambs through Somerset lanes to the lambing sheds. Four of the paintings in the show portray life on the Hassed farm where the farmer, who is helped by his wife and grand-daughter, looks after a small flock of fine Poll Dorset sheep. Cidermaking is everywhere in Somerset and the exhibition focuses on blossom time and apple picking in Pam Johnson’s orchard. She has also captured life at Bennett’s farm, a very old cider farm, where cider is made for their own consumption and is not part

of the modern rebirth of cidermaking. The theme moves onto gardening where she captures

fascinating images of Queenie and her husband Ken. They are both aged 90 and Queenie grows dahlias and Ken grows the

Continuing with the gardening theme, there is a painting of Duncan, a Day Lily aficionado amongst his sculpted topiary pillars and garden ‘rooms’.

Matilda Temperley: A View From the Hill

Documentary and fashion photographer Matilda Temperley is turning her camera towards home territory for a new exhibition about Somerset today. Matilda received the commission from the South West Heritage

Trust, with an exhibition, book and documentary film out now. The exhibition, Matilda Temperley: A View From the Hill, is at Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury, close to where Matilda grew up and now lives. Her associated photobook further explores the people and places that are close to her heart. Matilda said: ‘Having a commission to explore my own area has been wonderfully eye opening. Looking a little harder at my surroundings has been an incredible adventure. ‘It is more diverse and interesting than I ever imagined, and I have only scratched the surface.’ With brother Henry Temperley, and sister-in-law Lara Stower, Matilda has also produced a documentary about Somerset which will be premiered at the Museum and shown there in the Abbey Barn. Officer with the South West Heritage Trust, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Matilda to open this exhibition of her work at Somerset Rural Life Museum. ‘As well as capturing Somerset’s wonderful distinctiveness, the project documents some of the issues facing rural communities. It will be an important contribution to the story of Somerset already explored by the Museum. Matilda’s striking images capture the county today but also evoke its rich past and uncertain future.’ Matilda’s photography is diverse and includes fashion and

documentary commissions. Her work regularly appears in internationally recognised newspapers and magazines and her best-selling book, Under The Surface – Somerset Floods, won the Royal Photographic Society’s Vic Odden Award in 2015. Matilda Temperley: A View From the Hill, is open at Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury until 1 June 2019. Somerset Rural Life Museum is part of The South West Heritage Trust, an independent charity that protects and celebrates the region’s rich heritage. Visit srlm.org.uk, #srlmmatildatemperley.

30,000 bras and more required for Air Ambulance

Shirley Allum Fashions & Lingerie, 30 High Street, Shaftesbury, have currently collected 30,000 old bras for Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. This is approximately 17 miles

of bras but Shirley and her team would love to make it up to 20 miles so are asking for your help. Tracy Bartram, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Communications Manager said: ‘Shirley and her team have been collecting unwanted bras to help raise funds for the Charity for many years. This started after we launched an initiative called ‘Bag a Bra’ ten years ago. Although that specific campaign no longer runs, Shirley Allum Fashions continue to be a collection point for unwanted bras in the area, donating them as part of our textile recycling

scheme which we run in partnership with BIU Group. All bras collected are weighed and monies are paid to the charity depending on the weight collected. The bras are then sent on to countries such as West Africa.’

More bras required! Shirley Allum with the bra collection box.

THE BUSY A30 skirts the northern edge of Sherborne town centre and eastbound motorists queuing at the traffic lights can catch a glimpse of some attractive old buildings. Among them are the former Antelope and Angel coaching inns, Priory House with its 17th century mullioned windows and a doorway dominated by a huge hamstone lintel, three-storey Greenhill House built in 1607 on the south side of The Green, and a distant view of The Julien medieval hospice and its adjacent halftimbered building at the top of Cheap Street. What the motorists miss, however, is a view of the main course of the town’s architectural meal, Sherborne Abbey. For travellers by train to Sherborne, this comes as the start of the meal. The short stroll along Digby Road from the station brings them face to face with the magnificent south transept of the Abbey with its huge stained-glass window and the bell tower behind, this reputedly containing the heaviest ring of eight bells in the world. The Abbey was extensively

restored in Victorian times, and the elaborate memorial in front of the Abbey commemorates the life of George Wingfield Digby of the ‘new’ Sherborne castle who had contributed handsomely to the restoration. He was 60 when he inherited the Sherborne estates from his uncle Edward in 1856 and gave much to the Abbey and town including building the Digby Hotel,

now a boarding house of Sherborne School. He died in 1883 and the memorial in the form of an Eleanor Cross was erected in 1884. Until the 1880s this impressive view of the Abbey was obstructed by the Old Town Hall which had occupied the site of the memorial. Built in 1681 to house a market, corn exchange and the Assizes, it was also used for meetings,

dinners, entertainments and similar events. It was demolished in 1884. Some years ago a friend lent me a faded old postcard showing the building, possibly produced by Adam Gosney, one of the town’s first photographers who set up in business in the late 1860s. Sherborne Museum has a much clearer copy of this view in its large collection of historic local photos. If you’re intrigued by the history of the town, exhibits in the museum tell the story from Roman times and include maps, photographs, prints and facsimiles of medieval documents as well as

an extensive collection of tools, implements and relics and displays devoted to the silk industry and gloving which were major local employers in past centuries. The museum is tucked away in Church Lane which runs between the Abbey and the Conduit at the bottom of Cheap Street. Current Winter opening hours are 10.30am till 12.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, but from mid-April it will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30am till 4.30pm. Always worth a visit! Other Sherborne attractions are also about to re-open after the Winter. The ‘old’ castle, dating from the early 12th century, was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh by Queen Elizabeth I in 1592. He quickly found it impossible to convert the medieval castle into a modern home so in 1594 he started to build a new castle on the site of a hunting lodge on the opposite side of the river. The old castle was largely destroyed following a siege in 1645 during

the Civil War and the ruins are cared for by English Heritage. For opening days, times and entry charges phone the custodian on 01935 812730 or visit www.english-heritage .org.uk/sherborne. His ‘new’ castle has been much extended since Raleigh’s time, and the landscaping and lake were the work of Capability Brown in the 18th century. If you’re planning to visit, I recommend that you invest first in a copy of the Sherborne Castle Souvenir Guide – the colour photography is simply stunning, the descriptive text is concise and helpful, and the brief histories of the Digby and Wingfield Digby families are full of interest. For opening days, times and entry charges phone the Digby Estate Office on 01935 813182 or go to www.sherbornecastle.com. Always a great attraction is the Sherborne Castle Country Fair which takes place this year on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May. This year’s first open day at Castleton Pumping Station is on

Much of Sherborne’s rich history can be explored in the museum on Church Lane, between the Abbey and the Conduit on Cheap Street.

Sunday 7th April from 11.30am until 3.30pm when the massive waterwheel and pumping engines will be in operation and associated old machinery will be on display. Audio-visual presentations in the visitor centre reveal that the waterwheel was in continual use from 1869 until 1959 and was subsequently restored by enthusiastic volunteers. Admission is free but donations

would be very much welcomed. The Pumping Station is on Oborne Road a short distance east of its junction with Newland, Long Street and New Road. With Spring upon us it’s the ideal time to explore the town, indulge in a spot of windowshopping, sample the many tea shops, cafés and pubs and see for yourself why Sherborne attracts so many visitors from

far and wide every year. The town’s many elegant shops have featured extensively in previous Visitor articles, for Cheap Street and Half Moon Street are packed with an incredible variety of specialist traders too numerous to mention by name and there are yet more independent businesses tucked away on Hound Street, Long Street, South Street and Digby Road. And as a reminder that Sherborne is a country town at heart, Cheap Street hosts a farmers market on the third Friday of each month and a street market every Thursday and Saturday. But plans to add a centre for the visual arts to the town’s attractions seems to have divided local opinion. The proposed site is on land behind Paddock Gardens that was previously tennis courts, and the proposed building is designed to house one large and two small galleries, an arts shop, a restaurant and a tourist information centre. While there is general agreement that it could become a major asset for the town, the plans are not without their critics because its main entrance would be through Paddock Gardens, owned and managed by the town council but

originally developed by local residents, and because it could cause car-parking problems on nearby streets. By the time this appears in print the district council will probably have reached a decision on the planning application, but whichever way it goes it won’t please everyone!

Roger Richards.

A QUESTION that has been coming my way a lot lately has been to do with itchy skin. Many people who have not otherwise ever

suffered with any kind of skin issue such as eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis, have suddenly been suffering from very dry and/or itchy irritable skin. Our skin is our largest organ and provides valuable defences against outside attack, helps throw off toxic assault, regulates our body temperature and of course keeps our insides nicely packaged. Chronic skin conditions may have very different causes from transient irritations but many of the remedies discussed below can also be helpful for those with eczema, psoriasis etc. This sheer numbers of people I have seen affected by this latest spell would indicate that there may be some environmental poison we have been exposed to, or something viral doing the rounds. Either way, we need to keep our immune systems nourished, and moderate overzealous histaminic reactions that trigger that itch. Firstly, it is a good idea to have a think about whether there are any new chemicals you may have been exposed to. Do a review of the washing powders, toiletries, air

fresheners, household or gardening gloves and even any fabrics – anything your skin comes into contact with. Even if there is nothing obvious, now is a good time to switch to the most gentle natural products available and many of the items we have daily contact with are pretty much chemical cocktails with unknown consequences. Also, making sure you’re getting plenty of basic skin nourishment in the form of water, fatty acids (think nuts & seeds) and plenty of antioxidant support – colourful fruit and veg especially foods like berries, cherries, greens and sweet potatoes. There are some wonderful antiinflammatory & anti-histamine supplements including chamomile, pycnogenol, quercetin, vitamin C and good old nettle. Taking these internally as supplements or drinking the herbs as teas can be very helpful. Cooled nettle tea can be wonderfully soothing to apply externally as well. These are the same remedies we may use for hayfever, another common problem at this time of year and this gives you an idea of how helpful they are to calm an overreactive immune system. The Combination D tissue salt for minor skin problems, eczema and scaly skin can also be worth a try – and it’s safe to use alongside other medicines. There are several topical

solutions too although a little trial and error may be needed to find just the right fit for your skin. Neem and chickweed are two herbal creams that can be very successful for treating itchiness. Shea and mango butters are deeply nourishing and moisturising if dryness is the issue. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) or oatmeal in the bath are useful for soothing aggravation. A spray of diluted (1 part to 3 parts water) ACV is a great remedy to have on hand to spritz the skin, helping to change the PH and introduce helpful microorganisms. Other branded emollients containing herbal blends to be used as an alternative to steroid creams are also on the market – come and check out our selection in store, we sometimes have samples! If you have any follow up questions or want some advice on this or any other health niggle, please pop instore and talk to a member of our team. Jenna Evans © 2019.

MOTORING VINTAGE Motorcycling

AS I REPORTED last month the Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show held at the Bath and West Showground had to be postponed due to the heavy snow. Well the rescheduled event did take place on the 23rd and 24th of February and very successful it proved to be. This time the contrast in weather could not have been more marked as the two days were both dry and sunny and could not have been better. The weather no doubt contributing to the large crowd with many thousands attending over the two days. The standard of machines is always impressive, as are the many club stands, and this year was no exception. Of particular note was the Wells Classic Motorcycle Club who had made a replica of Cafe Rene from the 'Allo Allo' series and was rewarded with the best club stand award. The Westlands Classic Club also had an impressive display of bikes. All the local Sections of the VMCC also had stands with machines of every type, colour, country of origin that you could ever wish to see. My picture this month shows Dave Atterbury from the Somerset Section. His newly finished 1916 Indian Power Plus was judged 'Best in Show' and so carried off the main prize and very well deserved it was too. The picture shows the proud owner with the machine adorned with the winning rosette. Attendees came from Cornwall to Kent and from Dorset to Scotland making this a truly spectacular event and a very social one. Nice bikes and good company coupled with good weather and good food, what is there not to like? The number of events are becoming more prolific as the promise of better weather comes along. April will be busy with the Somerset Section starting with a

guest speaker at their club night at Cossington on the 4th. On the 25th will be the Morning Meet at Wedmore and two days later they start a four day foray into Wales for the Twin Dragon Run. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section also have a guest speaker for their club night at East Stour on the 8th. The Hinton St Mary Run from the Village Hall will be on the 28th, this is always a popular event. The Dorset Section have their Lunch Meet at Henstridge on the 3rd, and on the 7th will be the Blandford Run which starts from the Market Square. Club night on the 10th is a guest speaker and on the 14th is the Tiddler Run also at Henstridge. This is a new event put on to cater to the smaller capacity machines in an effort to keep them on the road. Lastly on the 27th will be the Breakfast Meet at Henstridge. During April the Wells Classic Motorcycle Club and the Westlands Classic Club both have a multitude of events so check their web sites for more details. For more information on the happenings listed above just ring 01935 872528. Returning to the subject of bike shows it is amazing to me the sundry items now available to assist your enjoyment of motorcycling, and all of them are generally available at these shows for reasonable money as opposed to the normal shop retail figures. and comfort and all types can be found. Tools and the myriad of consumables that we all need are there in abundance. New products are always coming onto the market and for an example we are all familiar with a spray can of liquid which can be squirted into a tyre in the event of a puncture. I personally have had little success with these products but now there is another canister to be squirted into the tyre before you have a puncture. It stays in there permanently and in the case of a puncture the sealant immediately seals any size of hole which should enable the rider to retain control of the machine, reduce speed and return home safely. It can be used in any vehicle and has been used by military vehicles when such things become even more important. The next show I shall be going to is the Stafford Show at the end of April. I recommend your attendance both as a social occasion and the chance to catch up with the latest offerings to help with our motorcycling enjoyment. Even riders of old machines can sometimes benefit with some of this latest technology. It is apparent from the modern motorcyclist that our machines are now no more than part of our leisure activities. Many years ago funds would only allow a rider to choose a mundane machine on

which he would commute to work all the week and at the weekend he might strip off the lights and use the same bike for either scrambling or for trials or even a bit of road racing before replacing the lights ready for work the next day. Now very few riders need to use their bikes as their daily transport. As a leisure item we can dress our bikes up with all sorts of goodies or even ourselves with fancy clothing. I am not determining whether this trend is a good or bad thing but just making the observation of how things have changed over a relatively short time span. Who cares as long as we get out and enjoy our bikes in whatever guise we choose, and enjoyment and fun should be the predominant factor. Rod Hann.

Christmas has been and gone, and just like us, our pets can be prone to gaining some extra weight! Sometimes due to overindulging with too much turkey or maybe your dog hasn't been getting the normal amount of exercise? Would your cat rather sit by the fire instead of venturing outside?

● Timber & Aggregates ● Animal Supplies

● Pond Fish & Equipment ● Pets & Accessories ● Garden Supplies ● Garden Plants Wisteria Yard, Bruton BA10 0AR

Extra weight not only affects their bones and joints, it can also lead to more serious conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Does any of the above sound familiar? The Veterinary Nurses at Isle Valley provide weight watchers appointments. During the appointment the nurse will weigh your pet, discuss current feeding/exercise regime and make a suitable plan. Monthly follow up appointments are recommended so your pet’s weight loss is monitored.

Exciting Times For Castle Cary Community Library

On Monday 1st of April the management of the community library passes from Somerset County Council to a Community Library Partnership. Over the Winter a number of volunteers have been working tirelessly, setting up a Friends of the Library Group. The Friends will support the library through a number of activities.

The Friends of the Library Group.

These will include coffee mornings, authors events, encouraging links with the school and story telling at the library. Did you know that your local library is one of thirty two throughout Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire - any one of which you can use to borrow or return books? As Libraries West, this organisation has its own website and app through which you can order or renew books. It gives you access to digital books and even an array of magazines to read offline. Many other services include helping isolated people to access the library and there is a provision to encourage a wide range of reading and digital skills. You can support your community library in a number of ways. Certainly make use of your free membership by joining at your earliest opportunity if you have not already done so. Support local events of which there will be a number. Consider joining the Friends as a volunteer. Help make your library the hub of your community.

As I, turn up the collar on My favorite winter coat This wind is blowing my mind

THE FIRST PERSON to tell me the song gets a free drink. Last month Ray Gudge correctly named the song as Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Starting off this month with some sad news to report Iris Jenkins who has been coming to the Quick ever since I took over the place has passed away. Iris was well known all over town having been a teacher and a member of numerous societies. We had a super send off for her here and the number of her family, friends and colleagues who came along is testament to how well she was liked RIP Iris x. On a happier note we had a Silent Disco fund raiser in aid of the St Margaret’s Hospice. Jane and Ashley Helyar from the HELL YEAH fundraisers put on an excellent show and watching nearly a hundred people dancing in silence is one of the funniest things you will ever see but it was all in aid of a great cause so well done gang!! Liz Leach had her long awaited party here, a fabulous band, a great crowd of friends, a little bit of food and a few drinks made for an excellent evening. Congratulations Liz x. Next month we have a couple of gigs to tell you about on Friday 5th of April we have Beatles with Wings an absolutely fantastic tribute show which includes Howie Casey, who was in Wings alongside Paul McCartney for many years. Google the band to find out more. Tickets are available from the pub. On Easter Sunday we have SNAKEBYTE live in the function room, doors open at 8pm so get there early if you want to be near the front. See you all next month! Toot Toot!!! 

AN ADVERT IN THE PUB PAGES ENSURES A FREE MENTION HERE!

EASTER SIGNALS the end of Lent and after a period of selfdenial, having abstained from some of life’s little luxuries, such as chocolate or wine, I relish the opportunity for a little indulgence. If like me, you love both chocolate and wine, and want to enjoy them together, finding that perfect match can pose something of a challenge. Whilst we do not often consider chocolate to be a natural match with wine, this Easter, as you break your ‘fast’ with an Easter egg or two, it is worth exploring wine and spirit options that you might find surprisingly enjoyable. There are some interesting combinations that can be a match made in heaven but do steer well clear of dry white wines. It is worth making the effort to find a pairing that ‘complements’ rather than ‘contrasts’; matching lighter, more elegant flavoured chocolates with lighter-bodied wines, whilst stronger tasting, more full flavoured chocolate, can stand up well to a more full-bodied wine. The real treat for connoisseurs comes with dark chocolate; the glossy shine, that tantalising, intense aroma, the snap when you break it. Whatever your choice, the general rule is that the wine should be as sweet as, or even a little more so, than the chocolate. To entertain family and friends, a chocolate-tasting and wine pairing session can be fun, and given my passion for both food and wine, I am often lucky enough to receive wine or foodie gifts as presents. I was recently given a slim metal box of Chocolates for Wine (£10.99) which contained 12 hand-made chocolates of 6 different cocoablends specially designed to enjoy with different wines. The perceived quality of chocolate largely depends upon the cocoa content present; this offering had milk chocolate from Java (34% cocoa), Costa Rica (34% cocoa), and Venezuela (43% cocoa), and dark chocolate from Ecuador (51% cocoa), Santo Domingo (71% cocoa), and Ghana (84% cocoa). Also available is Brix Chocolate 4 Flavour Gift Set (£22). This collection features a complete wine and chocolate tasting guide, along with 4 different flavours of chocolate, and Green & Blacks Taste

Collection (£11) would make an interesting alternative to the usual Easter egg. It has the advantage of being Fairtrade too. If you want to really push the boat out then go for Valrhona Grands Crus Dark & Milk chocolate squares gift box (£35.95), which gives details of all 66 tasting squares of milk and dark single origin chocolates, such as Manjari, Abinao, Guanaja, Alpaco, Bahibe & Tanariva. As a general rule, the darker the chocolate and the higher the cocoa content the punchier the wine, and the grape variety, it will stand up to. Extra dark chocolate (70%+) – Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux Red, Barolo, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Touriga Nacional, Super Tuscans, Amarone, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo, full bodied Shiraz. This also pairs well with strong, spicy single malt whiskies, generally those aged in sherry casks, such as Bruichladdich, as well as Cognac and Armagnac. Medium Dark (60%-70%) Merlot, Shiraz, Zinfandel, Chianti, Rhone Red, Brunello de Montalcino, Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Tempranillo (Rioja), Grenache, Carmenère, Mourvedre. When it comes to spirits, Talisker Storm, Bowmore, or Chivas Regal 12-year old Scotch Whisky, as well as Drambuie, are a good match. Award winning Japanese whiskies are also now much sought after, so for something different give Yamazaki a try. Smooth Dark (54% - 60%) – Demi-Sec Champagne, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Vintage Port, Prosecco, Beaujolais, White Port, LBV Port, Tawny Port, Ruby Port, Aligoté, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Gewurtztraminer, Semillon, Pinot Gris. When it comes to spirits, sweeter whiskies, aged in bourbon casks, such as Glen Moray 12-year old, and many of the Irish Whiskeys that are available would be good. Milk chocolate (46% - 54%) - Port, Pedro Ximenez Sherry, Rosé, Late Harvest Wines, Madeira, Tokai, Sauternes, Muscat, Asti Spumante. Now we are into the realm of whisky liqueurs and smooth whiskies with caramel or vanilla tones, such as Monkey Shoulder, Glen Grant 16-year old, or Glenlivet 12 year old Scotch Whisky. LP-V. Pick up what others leave behind with Westwood available at Ben Johnson Garden Machinery

The British weather is notoriously unpredictable. Make a plan to mow your lawn and it seems inevitable that it will start to rain. A Westwood is the only machine that ‘cuts it in the wet’. Most ‘ride-on mowers’ rely on the air flow caused by the cutting blades to throw lawn clippings into the grass catcher. This system can be noisy and inefficient. Damp grass will often get clogged in the deck and discharge chute, requiring regular unblocking and an unacceptable nish on your lawn. The Westwood cut and collect system works in a better way. The three hardened-steel blades found in the heavy duty Westwood XRD and IBS decks, are contra-rotating and throw the clippings to the rear of the deck. The ejected grass is swept up by the rotating brushes of the Powered Grass Collector. The Westwood ‘system’ means that even wet grass can be cut and

collected fully, with little risk of clogging. Leaves and other garden debris can be quickly cleared from the lawn. Simply drive over the material with the collector engaged. Westwood ride-on mowers are available from Ben Johnson Garden Machinery, Shaftesbury.

A Westwood does not clog.

the en d bi t . . . PAPERCHASE

IT CAME AS no surprise to read in the 2nd March issue of the Western Daily Press that it has ‘cost you an additional ten pence today. That’s because we have reluctantly taken the decision to increase the price of the paper to £1.90 on a Saturday. Weekday editions of the paper are not affected and will continue to be p riced at 9 0p.’ No surprise because the price of the weekday editions rose from 85p to 90p (almost 6%) as recently as the end of December, and because the price of the Saturday paper had not been increased since 10th March last year – when it rose by a massive 20% from £1.50 to £1.80. This year’s rise of a little over 5% is somewhat more acceptable, but it’s still a lot more than the rate of inflation. As the editor explained, ‘providing trusted daily news, sport and feature coverage in print is a costly business’, yet the paper is persisting with its never-ending ‘Save 40%’ offer that I have mentioned so many times in this column over the past year. And he added that his paper has ‘a proud tradition of standing up for our readers, of holding powers-that-be to account’, presumably hoping readers will think that is worth the extra 10p. A free local paper that is proving to be effective at challenging the powers-that-be is The Leveller that emanates from Langport and serves a substantial chunk of Somerset. A newspaper in magazine format, it’s published in the middle of each month and on 15th January reached its 100th issue. It claims to be ‘Somerset’s fastest growing newspaper’ with a circulation of more than 11,000 copies. The 80 pages of the 15th February issue were full of local news and comment, some of it quite contentious, a business directory, events diary and plenty of local advertisements. It carried in-depth reports on the comparative performance of four local hospitals, the audit committee effectiveness of Somerset’s county and district councils, the report of the accident investigation into the derailment of a quarry train at Witham Friary in 2017, and the re-introduction of a ‘house’

32 THE VISITOR April 2019

system at Huish Academy, none of which do I recall reading about in the Western Gazette. And news from the town councils in Yeovil, Somerton, Langport, Bridgwater and elsewhere. Clearly The Leveller’s content is written by local people who know their area and the issues of concern and interest to local residents, so I’m not surprised that its readership is increasing. It also has a website which carries news updates between each issue of the paper, but states that ‘we do not publish stories on either Facebook or Twitter. It is our view that those platforms have little credibility and are so riven with fake news, we would not wish to associate our stories by publishing them on those platforms ... as long as the story appears on the LevellerLive website you can be sure that it is one of ours and is genuine’. Well said! Chronicler.
