Your June always get my copy of The Vine, front cover is the best you’ve done so far, I looked at it for ages. but would very much like to see Windrush 1948: what do you think the three men on the front were more features about Coventry. Could YOU help to change a child’s life?

C

oventry Fostering and Adoption Service is asking people from local black communities, and in mixed black and white relationships, to take the first step and find out more about fostering or adoption. A significant number of Coventry children in foster care are of mixed parentage or from ethnic minorities. At the moment there aren’t enough foster carers or adopters from similar backgrounds to support the children and help them stay in touch with their heritage. Many of the children have had a difficult start in life because of neglect or abuse. As a result they have extra learning needs or demanding behaviour. Around 30 of these children are currently waiting for permanent families to adopt them. They include groups of brothers and sisters who

want to stay together, children with learning difficulties or health problems, and older children. You don’t need any formal qualifications to foster or adopt. But you must have the skills and dedication to help you meet the needs of the children or young people in your care. Fostering is a way of providing a family life for children while they cannot live with their own parents. It is often used to provide temporary care while parents get help sorting out problems or when they need a break. It can also help children or young people through a difficult time in their lives. Adoption provides a permanent family for a child or children who cannot be brought up by their own parents. It’s a legal procedure in which all the parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters.

Coventry Fostering and Adoption Service will help you prepare for these important roles. All potential adopters and foster carers have their own social worker to take them through the assessment and approval process. We also offer ongoing training and support to approved foster carers and adopters. If you are interested in fostering you will need to live in Coventry or the immediate surrounding area. We can consider you as an adopter if you live within an hour’s drive of the city.

For an informal discussion about fostering or adoption, please contact us today. Ring 024 7678 5577 or visit www.coventry.gov.uk/ adoptionandfostering

Head-START for tenants to develop new skills Sandwell Homes has launched a new initiative to help tenants of Sandwell Council engage in housing matters by offering a series of training courses.

Supporting People programme: primary aim is the delivery of housing related support in order to promote independent living

Sharon Williams, the community involvement officer who is running the START scheme, has also developed a library of externally run training courses where in-house training is unavailable. She said: “Sandwell Homes values its customers’ input and wants to ensure that they take an active role in housing matters including participation on committees, organising events, running successful support groups, and sitting on Board meetings. “Hopefully the skills acquired from these courses will also be of value to tenants in the wider world and not just for engaging with housing issues.” The START brochure, outlining which courses are available, has been sent to tenants and residents associations, and housing service panel members. It is also available on the Sandwell Homes website at www.sandwellhomes.org.uk and the Sandwell community information and participation services (SCIPS) website.

Beautiful Mama Half page leap ad.indd 1

30/5/08 11:12:02

Annette B is on a mission to deliver God’s Words and to sow His seeds through the medium of reggae.

A

nnette B is releasing an EP this month “Beautiful Mama”, with an album to follow “God’s Got My Soul”. She describes her style as “Lovers Rock”, a style of reggae music noted for its romantic sound and content, but with a twist- as her music has a Christian theme and message. This might seem unconventional, but Annette explains: “People who only listen to reggae need to hear the Word and this may be their only avenue.” Her musical taste springs from her childhood, when from a young age she listened to reggae on her father’s gramophone. However her musical influences stem from a wide pool from Bob Marley to Mary J Blige. Aside from reggae, Annette also sings in a choir called “Just Praise” who are featured on the album and the album also includes artists such as Spanner, Owen Uriah,

Nevile Forbes and Norma Lindo. “I went to a Church of God of Prophecy convention while pregnant with daughter Paris, now six years old, and that was when I felt the presence of the Lord and I’ve never looked back since. My husband Jestin followed the same path a couple of years later.” In addition to her singing, Annette is also a successful business woman and is currently doing her masters degree in business management (MBA), whilst being a director of a family run care home business. On top of that she is now setting up her own record label, MCP Promotions, named after the initials of her three children: Michael, Cerisse and Paris. Annette’s fusion of reggae and gospel is no longer considered radical and she is

excited about the launch. “Reggae is no longer alienated as it was back then… My music has been accepted to date and I know God is well pleased.” For stocklists of Annette’s new EP or album, contact: Annette_b_@hotmail.com Tel 0787 7963690 www.myspace.com/annetteb theVINE July 2008

tastebudtastebud Salt fish

(Salt Cod)

Salt cod is dried, salted cod, which must be re-hydrated before it can be used in cooking. It needs to either be soaked in cold water for 24 hours until it becomes soft, or it can be boiled until it is soft and unsalted. It can then be fried on its own or added to other dishes. It is typically produced in Canada, Iceland or Norway. It is claimed that it was first produced at least 500 years ago, with the discovery of the Great Banks off Newfoundland, Canada. After the discovery of the North American continent in the late 15th century, this coast line off Canada was discovered with an abundance of fish, including Atlantic cod. Soon Spanish, Portuguese, English and French fishermen were visiting and salting the cod to preserve it. Salt fish was therefore introduced to the Caribbean and formed part of the trade route between Europe and the West Indies. In Caribbean cooking salt fish is most commonly teamed with ackee and dumplings or made in to fritters. However, salt fish is not just a Jamaican food stuff and is also commonly used in Mediterranean cooking, particularly in food from France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

The food however is, as it should be, the biggest testimony to Deep. I sampled a limited version of the weekend buffet menu. It was filling yet sumptuous. The menu included ackee and salt fish, Caribbean salmon, brown stew chicken, curry goat, rice and peas, fried dumplings and plantains. My personal favourite was the curry goat, one of the best I’ve had, which had a good kick to it but with extremely tender meat. At the weekend there are even more dishes on the buffet, including cow foot, oxtail and Caribbean style barbequed chicken wings. The staff are warm and welcoming and all these factors have combined to create a busy restaurant with a very diverse appeal. It is a joy to find such a sophisticated Caribbean restaurant but moreover one with food to match the interior design.

Deep is open from Mon – Fri, 12-3pm and 6.30-10.30pm, on Sat 5-12pm and Sun 28pm. The buffet is available Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Contact Deep on 0121 622 3332 for more details.

What vaccinations do I need when travelling abroad?Primary Care Trust

The vaccinations you need depend on which country you are travelling to. You should make an appointment with your GP or practice nurse to discuss where you are travelling to, when and for how long, at least three months before your trip so that they can give you advice and arrange any immunisations and anti-malaria medication you may need. You should also inform them if you’re pregnant (or thinking about getting pregnant) and whether you’re taking children with you. As well as any new vaccinations, you should make sure your existing vaccinations such as polio and tetanus are up-to-date, and have booster jabs if necessary. For more details, phone your GP Practice.

If we do get a heat wave this summer then please look after yourself and each other! Heatwaves can be dangerous, especially for the very young, very old or those with chronic disease. The heat can affect anyone but those at particular risk during a heatwave lasting over 2-3 days include: • Older people. • Babies and young children. • People with mental health problems. • People on certain medication. • People with a serious chronic condition, particularly breathing or heart problems. • People who already have a high temperature from an infection. • People who use alcohol or illicit drugs. • People with mobility problems. • People who are physically active like manual workers and sportsmen and women. Karen Jackson, Consultant in Public Health, Dudley PCT said, “Most of us enjoy sunny weather, but extreme heat can cause serious health problems. We all want to enjoy the summer and there are some simple, commonsense precautions that we can all take to stay safe.” In a severe heatwave, you may get dehydrated and your body may overheat, leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Below are some precautions that we can all take to stay safe in the sun. 1. Keep out of the heat: • If a heatwave is forecast, try and plan your day in a way that allows you to stay out of the heat. • If you can, avoid going out in the hottest part of the day (11am - 3pm). • If you can’t avoid strenuous outdoor activity, like sport, DIY, or gardening, keep it for cooler parts of the day, like early morning. • If you must go out, stay in the shade. Wear a hat and light, loose-fitting clothes, preferably cotton. If you are going to be outside for some time, take plenty of water with you.

2. • • •

Stay cool: Stay inside, in the coolest rooms, as much as possible. Close the curtains in rooms that get a lot of sun. Keep windows closed while the room is cooler than it is outside. Open them when the temperature inside rises, and at night for ventilation. If you are worried about security, at least open windows on the first floor and above. • Take cool showers or baths, and splash yourself several times a day with cold water, particularly your face and the back of your neck 3. Drink regularly: • Drink regularly even if you do not feel thirsty – water or fruit juice are best. • Try to avoid alcohol, tea and coffee. They make dehydration worse. • Eat as you normally would. Try to eat more cold food, particularly salads and fruit, which contain water. 4. Seek advice if you have any concerns: • Contact your doctor, a pharmacist or NHS Direct if you are worried about your health during a heatwave, especially if you are taking medication, or have any unusual symptoms. • Watch for cramp in your arms, legs or stomach, feelings of mild confusion, weakness or problems sleeping. • If you have these symptoms, rest for several hours, keep cool and drink water or fruit juice. Seek medical advice if they get worse or don’t go away. If anyone you know is likely to be at risk during a heatwave, help them get the advice and support they need. Older people living ontheir own should be visited daily to check they are OK. Advice on how to reduce the risk, either for yourself or somebody you know, can be obtained from NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk, or from your local chemist.

Women in comedy are the exception rather than the norm, but we meet an ambitious and thankfully amusing female comedienne Annette Fagon, who has been on the circuit for three years.

I have to go on stage with the attitude of ‘I don’t care’. If I go on wanting to make people laugh, it doesn’t happen.

Remember the saying... ‘How you think, determines how you feel’ Complementary Therapist, Annette Ellis gives a brief outline of her work as a Hypnotherapist.

What is Hypnotherapy? In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down and focused on the voice of their therapist. Positive suggestions are relayed to the client that enables them to make positive changes within themselves. In this very relaxed state, the conscious mind is laid to rest and the very powerful subconscious mind is at the fore. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep but is in fact a state of enhanced awareness. You cannot be made to do anything you don’t want to do and if you want to come out of ‘ trance’, all you have to do is open your eyes. EFT or the Emotional Freedom Technique is a powerful and effective therapy that works by unblocking the energy flow in the body by stimulation of well established meridian points. Emotional debris becomes cleared and this in turn has an effect on your physical well-being. NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming and it is used in therapy as a means of understanding how a person views their model of the world. An hypnotherapist is not a replacement for conventional medical treatment, you should always consult with a medical practitioner. If you would like any more information on any of the above topics, please feel free to email me or give me a call.

EMPLOYERS ACT NOW OR PAY THE PRICE!

This year a special enforcement team will be in Birmingham to assess legal compliance in the hospitality sector. This will affect YOU. They will look at minimum wage, working time, contracts, terms and conditions, health & safety and legal compliance in the area of employment law. Acas advisers are here to help. We are nothing to do with any aspect of enforcement. Our involvement is entirely confidential and discreet. Anything said to us or observed by us stays with us. We are part of a project being run by Marketing Birmingham and funded by BERR. Our role is to offer: • A free diagnostic visit to find out what you need • Advice on how to improve your practices and procedures, if you need it • Free use of a designated business advisor to help you with any employment related concerns you may have • Vouchers to attend two training sessions of your choice, training designed to address employment issues that cause problems for the smaller employer

There will be no cost to you other than your time and willingness. In return you will have a more successful business and the comfort of knowing you need not fear a visit from any of the enforcement teams.

The project has limited resources so call us now Telephone Mobile Jayne Willats 01922 415032 07796 401598 Joanne Bickley 01922 693913 07796 940188

The purpose is to establish a reputation for professionalism in the hospitality sector in Birmingham which is second to none. There will be visitors to the 2012 games who will spend a lot of time away from the Olympics and London and Birmingham needs to position itself to take advantage of this.

Hate crimes are where the offender shows prejudice or hate against someone. This prejudice can be directed against a person’s ethnicity, gender, religion, faith, race or perceived race, sexual orientation, age or disability. Hate crime is motivated by hatred as a consequence of prejudice towards a targeted victim/s. The impact of hate crime extends beyond the individual victims, to include the wider family and sometimes communities. Crime can have a devastating psychological effect on people. Hate crimes consists of a series of crimes, each of which can have an overwhelming effect. The cumulative effect of such crimes can destroy lives through emotional damage, and long term trauma. Victims become constrained by the fear and could lead to isolation. Victims of hate crimes require support in understanding that they are not the only ones who have experienced a crime. Birmingham Racial Attacks Monitoring Unit offer victims of hate crimes a voice and access to the appropriate support mechanisms, which is vital in encouraging victims of hate crime to report further incidents.
