FCA appeal for new carers across Thames Valley to foster young parents with their child Foster Care Associates (FCA) is helping young parents in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, and across the Thames Valley region, to develop

their parenting skills by providing support in the home of a specially trained foster carer. The aim is to keep the family together and stop the children from going into care.

FCA which marks its 21st anniversary of providing care and support to children and young people this year, is appealing for potential carers in Thames Valley with the time, inclination and space to care for a young parent and their child to consider a move into fostering. A parent and child placement offers the parent – often the mother – and child the best

opportunity to remain together. A young parent may be struggling to care for their child and require extra support, and these placements allow the parent to develop their parenting skills in a stable and caring environment whilst in the guidance of their foster carer. FCA encourages parent and child placements because they allow the parent to maintain and build upon their relationship with the child, meaning a foster home can play a pivotal role in ensuring the parent and child a happy lifetime together. Karen Bolton, registered manager, from FCA Thames Valley said: "Rather than referring struggling young parents to residential units to have their parenting assessed, family courts and local authorities are increasingly beginning to refer them to parent and child foster placements. “With fully trained support staff across the Thames Valley region ready to work with new carers and guide them, FCA

offer full support and guidance to carers and children alike to ensure that each relationship fulfils the children and the family as whole” Placements can range from short-term assessment periods, which generally last up to 12 weeks, to more long-term ones that offer the chance to help the parent provide care and guidance to the child. This means an appropriate placement can be found to suit the foster home. Some are pre-birth placements that help parents to prepare for the birth of the child. FCA provides support to those undertaking parent and child placements every step of the way, including training, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities. For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA call 0800 023 4561 or visit www.thefca.co.uk

Brows & Lashes

I was born with my dad’s eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and I’m resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was…

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or overgroomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed specimens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options! Most of us ladies – and the odd gent too – need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and threading methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks. A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consultation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows it’s time to move on to the eyelashes. There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually working! My daughter’s naturally long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a new mascara. But what else is on offer? Tinting is an option if your lashes are particularly fair, and it’s not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friend’s son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up. Finally, how about having eyelash extensions? This is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

t last the summer months have arrived although the recent weather could easily be mistaken for April. The extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on a huge burst of growth. Herbaceous borders are reaching their early summer peak and the kitchen garden is becoming productive.

Plant of the Month

Rose

Prune back spring flowering shrubs and cut back/clean and dived spring flowering perennials If you haven’t done so yet plant out summer bedding into borders, containers and hanging baskets Remember to feed your containers and hanging baskets weekly with a liquid feed such as Miracle Gro or Tomorite. Dead-head spent blooms regularly Trim lavender plants now, cutting off any old flower heads and about 2.5cm (1 inch) of the current year's growth Pinch out the side shoots of tomatoes and tie in as required. Stake border perennial varieties that are tall growing and that tend to flop over Check roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other insect or disease problems and if they appear, take steps to control them straight away Begin to cut the grass regularly and fill in any bare spots by slightly loosening the surface of the soil and sow a good quality lawn seed over the area evenly Keep on top of weeds by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still remaining.

Roses are one of the most popular garden plants coming in a range of colours, many with scented blooms, and can be grown in borders, containers, over arches, pergolas and as groundcover. They are easy to grow and live for a long time, if looked after. Common diseases include blackspot and mildew, both of which can be treated with systemic fungicides and respond best if treated on a regular basis. Choose from large-flowered hybrid teas, cluster-flowered floribundas, modern bush roses, shrub and species roses. Climbers tend to repeat-flower, whereas ramblers flower impressively but only once, usually in June. The smallest roses can be grown in pots with a wide choice of patio and miniature roses available. Look for newer, disease resistant varieties and if you buy when in flower you can easily see the beauty of the rose you are getting. Gill Gallon Potash Nursery www.potashplants.co.uk

It’s the Law

MISCONCEPTIONS IN FAMILY LAW

There are many misconceptions in the world of Family Law, the most common of which are : 1. Common Law Marriage There is no such thing! Many people assume that unmarried couples share the same rights as their married counter-parts, however, this is not the case. Cohabitees are unable to claim maintenance for themselves (i.e. other than for a child of the relationship) nor are they entitled to claim against the other party’s pension. Furthermore, cohabitees are not necessarily entitled to an interest in the property and neither do they have an automatic right to continue occupying the family home. 2. The Rights of Fathers Unless the father is married to the mother and/or named on the child’s birth certificate, they do not automatically have parental responsibility for the child. It follows that they may not be entitled to determine

issues relating to the child’s schooling, religion and any medical treatment. This can be acquired by entering into a Parental Responsibility Agreement with the Mother or applying to the Court for an Order. 3. Legal Aid This is still available in certain areas and circumstances. Legal Aid is available for mediation and in some cases where there has been domestic violence or abuse. This can extend to securing protection and/ or dealing with children and financial issues following a relationship breakdown. It is also available in Public Law matters where the Local Authority has child protection concerns and may be available in child abduction cases. 4. Child Maintenance and Contact – These are two separate matters; failure to pay child maintenance does not preclude a parent from having contact with the child. Applications

in respect of contact are determined according to what is in the child’s best interests. 5. Financial Claims following Divorce - a party’s entitlement to claim financial relief against the other is not automatically dismissed by virtue of the divorce. Indeed, in a recent landmark decision, Vince v Wyatt, it was ruled that the Applicant’s claim should not necessarily be struck out in circumstances where the parties divorced in 1992 and the other party went on to found and develop a business worth over £50 million. The only way to dismiss financial claims is by virtue of a Clean Break Order.

Osborne Morris & Morgan are offering a free Family Law clinic at their Leighton Buzzard offices on the last Thursday of each month – contact the Family Law team for further details on 01525 378177.

Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Armed Forces DaySat 27th June 2015 Diamond smugglers, a police conspiracy, high tech spies, and a team of assassins intent on derailing Middle East peace talks…. Customs Investigator James Winter must overcome them all if he is to save his career—and his life. Winter, an ex-MI5 operative, is wrongly accused of colluding with a smuggling ring after it develops a suspicious knack of avoiding the traps set by his team. He battles to clear his name, but as his wife undergoes cancer treatment, he finds it increasingly hard to balance time at her bedside with action to vindicate himself. After his suspension, he sets out to find how the smugglers avoided arrest for so long, and an email from a bothersome high tech supplier puts Winter on the trail of a Mossad spy whom he discovered is somehow involved. It places Winter right in front of the Syrian hit squad. From the windswept Romney Marshes to the frozen streets of Helsinki and thickening Finnish snow, Winter tracks those who caused his suspension. He soon finds there’s a lot more at stake than just his job. In this fast-paced and suspenseful espionage thriller, James Winter stumbles into an international mystery involving Mossad, a Middle East terror plot to destabilize Israel and the global political climate. With the help of a dubious partner, Winter risks his life, but will he be able to stop an international conspiracy and clear his name? ndia. The very name itself conjures up different images for different people. Some immediately think of an immense history, of exquisite architecture, unimaginably beautiful buildings, a uniquely romantic culture; whilst others think of a chaotic and corrupt society, of filth and squalor everywhere, of grinding poverty, political corruption and extreme class distinction. I’ve been to India on five separate occasions and each time has been different regarding, for example, the geography be it coastal, mountainous or inland; the environment be it urban or rural. And, putting these experiences together, I can say “Yes” to each of the above. The place is incredibly diverse and so completely unlike anything that one sees in Britain (or, indeed, in the western world) that comparisons are almost pointless. People who have never been consider that I exaggerate grossly. I suppose I can say that, personally, I have a love/hate relationship with the place - in roughly equal measure: because, on the one hand, I am fascinated, intrigued, amazed at every turn whilst on the other hand, I am horrified, disgusted and appalled at what I see all around me. So how did Val and I fare on this particular trip? We started off at Delhi where we met our guides:- Daniele, the tour company representative, who kept us up to date regarding the daily timetable as to what was planned, where to meet and at what time. The other guide, Abhi, gradually evolved into a human encyclopaedia regarding the detailed history of every place visited together with a catalogue of the rulers, moguls, emperors or princes. Information came at us like bullets from a machine gun but, I’m afraid, it was all very intense and full of unfamiliar and unusual names. But in addition over the course of the fortnight, Abhi steered us through the minefield of Indian bureaucracy and “greased” many necessary palms. It would be very difficult to negiotiate one’s way around India without someone like Abhi to hold your hand. There seems to be a standard tour of Delhi because I’d already been to most of the places before. Still, it was nice to have another look at Jama Masjid - the largest mosque (not only in Delhi but also in India). Wonderful islamic architecture in red sandstone and marble with typical curves, arcs and twirls. Then the obligatory Ghandhi circuit of Raj Ghat where he was cremated and Ghandhi Smriti, (his former home, now a museum), where there’s a fantastic amount of information about his life and the political build up to his assassination in 1948. Both places are regarded as very sacred. Next, the very impressive India Gate constructed to commemorate India’s release from British rule with the names of all the people who fell in the struggle carved into its walls. It’s reminiscent of the Menin Gate at Ypres. After this, we left the comparative calm and orderliness of New Delhi and entered the cacophany of tiny streets with their hundreds of little shops found in Old Delhi. This was more like the “real” India, ie chaotic, shambolic, noisy, dirty, smelly. And something which must have hit the “first timers” like a bomb is that India has an extremely large population - well over a billion people - because everywhere was absolutely heaving. Especially with trashy trinket sellers. They come at you from all directions; they are incredibly persistent; they will not take No for an answer; they are extremely annoying. But it’s a fact of life in India - and tourists are seen to be incredibly wealthy (which, of course, they are in comparison).

Looking Up! TheNight Sky In Beds & Bucks June And July 2015 See The International Space Station From Bedfordshire: The first two weeks of June sees the

International Space Station (ISS) pass over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a solid bright white light moving at an almost constant speed across the sky roughly west to east. Timings vary from night to night, so keep your eyes peeled between 9:45pm and midnight. On some evenings you might get to see the ISS a second time, about 90 minutes after its first passage.

Hunt Down Electric Blue Clouds At The Edge Of Space:

Late summer evenings are a great time to hunt down noctilucent clouds (NLCs). These eerie electric blue strands of cirrus-like cloud sometimes appear draped over the northern horizon after dark. Sunlight reflecting off tiny particles of frozen meteor dust in Earth’s upper atmosphere are thought to cause these

strange night-shining clouds. Look out for them in the sky towards your north between 11pm and 2am.

Discover How Saturn Looks In A Telescope:

Seeing Saturn for the first time in a telescope is an unforgettable experience. This June and July the ringed planet is perfectly placed for evening viewing near the constellation of Scorpio. Look for it low down towards the south near a curved line of three dimmer white stars. To the naked eye Saturn appears as a bright yellow ‘star’. A small telescope is all that is needed to reveal the planet’s ring system. Image: Noctilucent Cloud Display by Jan Erik Paulsen

A Travellers Tale (Continued)

The Old State House, Boston

Humayan’s Tomb City Palace, Udiapur

After lunch we were shown Humayan’s Tomb and the Char Bagh gardens. Another beautiful building (Persian inspired) with gardens laid out in a geometric sequence of squares within squares within squares with fountains at nodal points. Mathematically pleasing and very restful. Finally it was off to Qutab Minar which is of considerable archaeological interest with pride of place going to the 250 ft high, ornately carved minaret (or “victory tower”). There are also cloisters whose pillars show intricately decorated Hindu carvings. A very impressive monument. Time now to leave Delhi and fly to Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan amidst paranoid airport security and bureaucrocracy. It was times like this that Abhi came into his own and he piloted us through what could have been a nightmare. Upon arrival, we found that Udaipur is set on the side of Lake Pichola and is described as the “Venice of the East”. They’re telling porkies - it’s nothing like Venice! Our first trip was to the City Palace - an ancient, huge building with hundreds of small rooms attracting thousands of visitors. Once inside, we

were “physically transported” on a conveyor belt of people from room to room and image to image. It would have been impossible to try and move in the opposite direction so great was the crush. Not the place for anyone suffering from claustrophobia! After lunch, an uninspiring boat trip to an island in the lake followed by a lively tuc-tuc ride back to the coach and to our hotel. That night we turned in early because tomorrow was to be a long day. The next day meant hours in the coach as we drove from Udaipur to Jaipur on a surprisingly good road across the flat, featureless plain which is central India. After the chaotic driving in Delhi and Udiapur, it was a relief to have relative peace on the open road. But one is never completely free of people and their amazing driving techniques; even though, now, they only came at us one at a time rather than twenty all at once! En route we passed through rural villages and realised just how poor some of the people really are - if delapidated shacks and hovels which serve as homes are any indication. And as with everywhere else, there were cows, dogs, pigs and goats simply wandering about and scratching around in the general rubbish looking for something to eat. But so that we shouldn’t be bored with the unrelenting scenery, Abhi decided we should learn something about India and Hindu culture. He taught us to count - successfully - up to ten in Hindi; he outlined the “rules of the road” regarding driving in India - and how they are totally ignored (which was already fairly obvious!); and he explained the workings of the caste system and arranged marriages. Driving “rules” caused considerable amusement but the other topics generated heated discussion; and a feeling that the caste system alone contributes enormously towards India’s serious corruption problems. We also learnt something about the principal Hindu gods Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva - the gods of creation, preservation and destruction/restoration respectively - and of their extremely complicated genealogy. There are many other gods such as Krishna, and Ganesha, son of Shiva, who is, perhaps, the most popular of all since he is the bringer of good fortune. Buddha is also on the list somewhere but it’s all very, very involved and I doubt if many Hindus understand it either. It was much too much for me. After a long, but interesting day, we arrived at Jaipur - known as the “Pink City” - so called because of the colour of much of the building stone in the old town.

TO JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 - stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre's most legendary songs from I Don't Know How to Love Him, Everything's Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is playing at Milton Keynes Theatre 14-18 July 2015.
