at Zara here right now. Spain is Zara’s home country and it sells its clothes at vastly lower prices there. Better still, the www.zara.com Spain website has an English language option, you can compare prices before you go (you can’t order UK delivery from it). Clothes there are often cheaper in euros than in pounds, even before the currency conversion. In fact on a basket of goods it was on average 38% cheaper. Some of you may think ‘ah yes I’ve seen the euro price on some labels in the UK’, but that’s usually the French price, which is generally more expensive. This trick works for others in the same group, Massimo Dutti, Pull & Bear and Uterque. If a loan’s advertised at 3.9% rep APR, they’re allowed to charge 20%. Every loan these days is listed as a ‘representative’ or ‘rep’ APR - that means by law only 51% of accepted applicants need to get the advertised rate. The rest can be and usually are charged more, and there’s no cap on how much more. Worse, the only way to know is to apply, and that leaves a footprint on your credit file. So be very careful. One way to mitigate this somewhat is to use the calculator at www.mse.me/eligibility which tells you your odds of being accepted without marking your credit file. The higher your acceptance odds the more likely you are to get the advertised rate, although it’s not guaranteed.

FCA appeal for new carers across Thames Valley to foster young parents with their child Foster Care Associates (FCA) is helping young parents in Milton Keynes, Aylesbury, and across the Thames Valley region, to develop

their parenting skills by providing support in the home of a specially trained foster carer. The aim is to keep the family together and stop the children from going into care.

FCA which marks its 21st anniversary of providing care and support to children and young people this year, is appealing for potential carers in Thames Valley with the time, inclination and space to care for a young parent and their child to consider a move into fostering. A parent and child placement offers the parent – often the mother – and child the best

opportunity to remain together. A young parent may be struggling to care for their child and require extra support, and these placements allow the parent to develop their parenting skills in a stable and caring environment whilst in the guidance of their foster carer. FCA encourages parent and child placements because they allow the parent to maintain and build upon their relationship with the child, meaning a foster home can play a pivotal role in ensuring the parent and child a happy lifetime together. Karen Bolton, registered manager, from FCA Thames Valley said: "Rather than referring struggling young parents to residential units to have their parenting assessed, family courts and local authorities are increasingly beginning to refer them to parent and child foster placements. “With fully trained support staff across the Thames Valley region ready to work with new carers and guide them, FCA

offer full support and guidance to carers and children alike to ensure that each relationship fulfils the children and the family as whole” Placements can range from short-term assessment periods, which generally last up to 12 weeks, to more long-term ones that offer the chance to help the parent provide care and guidance to the child. This means an appropriate placement can be found to suit the foster home. Some are pre-birth placements that help parents to prepare for the birth of the child. FCA provides support to those undertaking parent and child placements every step of the way, including training, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities. For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA call 0800 023 4561 or visit www.thefca.co.uk

strange night-shining clouds. Look out for them in the sky towards your north between 11pm and 2am.

See The International Space Station From Bedfordshire: The first two weeks of June sees the

International Space Station (ISS) pass over Bedfordshire in the evening sky. Look for a solid bright white light moving at an almost constant speed across the sky roughly west to east. Timings vary from night to night, so keep your eyes peeled between 9:45pm and midnight. On some evenings you might get to see the ISS a second time, about 90 minutes after its first passage.

Hunt Down Electric Blue Clouds At The Edge Of Space:

Late summer evenings are a great time to hunt down noctilucent clouds (NLCs). These eerie electric blue strands of cirrus-like cloud sometimes appear draped over the northern horizon after dark. Sunlight reflecting off tiny particles of frozen meteor dust in Earth’s upper atmosphere are thought to cause these

Discover How Saturn Looks In A Telescope:

Seeing Saturn for the first time in a telescope is an unforgettable experience. This June and July the ringed planet is perfectly placed for evening viewing near the constellation of Scorpio. Look for it low down towards the south near a curved line of three dimmer white stars. To the naked eye Saturn appears as a bright yellow ‘star’. A small telescope is all that is needed to reveal the planet’s ring system. Image: Noctilucent Cloud Display by Jan Erik Paulsen

How to get started: • Stop using fastacng chemical ferlisers that force so, watery plant growth so vulnerable to pests. Stop using chemical pescide which oen kills beneficial insects. • Start using organic plant food such as Fish, Blood and Bone, or pelleted poultry manures. • Collect rain water and use it for irrigaon. • Use plants like Verbena sp. and pot marigolds (Calendula) to aract beneficial insects like Ladybirds, Lacewings and Hoverflies. An old upturned clay flowerpot makes a good home for Ground Beetles. Hang bird feeders to aract garden birds and even the smallest pond can support frogs and toads. All these help to control garden pests. • Set up a composng system to recycle plant waste into garden compost. Spread over the soil (mulching) or dug in, it encourages soil life, improves soil structure and grows stronger healthier plants, more able to resist garden pests and disease. The Martin Lewis Money Page doesn’t hide that you can do this, but it’s a good trick. Just login to your www.amazon.co.uk music library to see if you’ve any past tracks available. As JHL1959 told me: “Crikey, it’s given me 182 albums, that’s 2,367 tracks. Amazingly, I still like a lot of them - cheered me up.”

It’s not always such a success though, GingerJuice said: “Just did this - thought it was brilliant then realised I’d bought the mother-in-law the Susan Boyle CD last year... ugh.” Only get good mobile signal with one network? Switch to a piggyback. Many people tell me “I wish I could switch network but only Vodafone/EE works in my home.” Yet there’s a way to switch provider but keep the same signal... Only EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 are actual mobile networks, yet there are many cheap virtual networks piggybacking on the same signal. E.g. Giffgaff is O2, Asda is EE, TalkMobile is Vodafone and Shebang is Three (full piggyback list at www.mse.me/piggyback). So check which other providers piggyback on your existing network and see if they’re cheaper. Energy firms can’t charge exit penalties within 49 days of a fix ending. If you’re on a cheap fixed energy deal you needn’t wait until the last day to switch to avoid exit fees as rules state that 49 days before your fix ends, you’re allowed to switch without penalty.

Correcting that ‘dye’abolical hair day! At some time in your life you may well have experienced a ‘bad hair day.’ Coping with unruly hair is bad enough, but that’s nothing compared to the overwhelming despair you feel when a hair colour goes wrong. With over 12 years of salon experience as a specialist in colour correction, creative cutting and hair extensions, I have seen and rescued numerous hair disasters. There’s so many ways that this can happen, especially when doing it yourself using an out-of-box product. I remember one lady in particular who had previously gone blonde, and then tried to colour her hair brown using an expensive off-the-shelf product for a very special occasion that same evening. After application, she looked in the mirror and, to her horror, her hair had turned green. Needless to say I received a very distressed phone call! Under normal circumstances I would like to have had an initial consultation to assess the existing and desired hair colours, done a skin test to identify if there were any adverse reactions to the colourant, and a strand test to confirm that the colour would meet my client’s expectations. However, on this occasion the priority was to rescue the situation quickly and make her hair look as lovely as I could for her special evening; time was definitely not on our side. I rushed off to my local hair and beauty supplier before returning to apply the necessary undertone, in this case, red. After waiting about 30 minutes, it was washed off, blown dry and then the colour was applied. The mixture of the red undertone and brown tint created a lovely warm brunette and, as a result, I had a very grateful lady who was able to enjoy her special event after all, and has been a regular client ever since. Please, please remember that once hair has been coloured, further options become more limited. If your hair is a light colour and you want to go darker, the natural undertone for the colour you want to achieve must be applied first to avoid that ‘dye’abolical hair day!

5 top tips for hair colour

1

After you have had your hair coloured, it’s advisable to have an after colour treatment which should always be recommended by your stylist. This will restore your hair back to its normal PH balance whilst locking in the colour you have just had. Always buy specialist colour shampoos and conditioners suitable for colour-treated hair.

3

Avoid exposing your hair to direct sunlight, e.g. on holiday, etc., to prevent the hair colour fading – tie your hair back or, even better, wear a hat!

Once a week after washing your hair with your specialist colour shampoo, as an intense treatment, apply your colour conditioner all over your hair, wrap it in a towel and leave it for as long as you can - the longer the better. This will stop your hair from drying out.

Pocket Money The Annual 2014 Pocket Money Survey by the Halifax revealed that 8 to 15 year olds received an average amount of £6.35 per week. Whilst parents or guardians were the main givers, a third of those surveyed also received pocket money from grandparents. Thirteen year olds were the most likely age group to receive weekly amounts and boys received more on average than girls. Only a third of children said they would save up for something expensive, most preferring to ask for it as a present. Other surveys such as those by Roosterbank suggest children as young as 3 are getting pocket money. If you are having trouble deciding how much pocket money to give

your children, think about what you expect them to pay for from that money. You can involve your children in the decision process. Do you expect them to buy their own sweets and magazines with the money for example, Or would you prefer to buy this type of thing and money will be for ‘special extras’ only? Commonly a basic payment plus bonus system is recommended. This includes a fixed amount which is given as long as children do certain expected things, perhaps keep their rooms tidy and do their homework for example. It is then ‘topped’ up by extra amounts if children do additional chores or achieve something significant .Of course you will need to make the possibilities appropriate to their age, and different chores can attract different bonuses depending on the time and effort required.

Many parents find that the use of a reward chart is helpful, particularly for younger children as it shows clearly the financial benefits of completing extra tasks. Having regular conversations about what children are doing with their money, what they want to buy and why they want it is also important. This can help them understand the value of things much more clearly because they have to decide whether to buy x or y. If you can bear it, it really is best to let them learn from their financial mistakes. Whilst many children will have a splurge when they first start receiving pocket money, as they get used to it they tend to become more careful about their choices. You can also help stimulate their thinking by talking about how you budget.

Harding’s Restaurant celebrates re-launch

Aylesbury College’s Harding’s Restaurant re-launched on 1 May 2015 following a recent refurbishment, and hosted a lunch event in celebration. This followed a successful student launch last week. The restaurant has been redecorated throughout, and has a new spring menu to accompany its fresh new look. Health Beauty & Wellbeing

Brows & Lashes

I was born with my dad’s eyebrows. Naturally thick, shapeless and unsightly, they looked like two caterpillars stuck to my forehead. At age twelve I followed the fashion of the day and plucked away until they were within a whisper of totally disappearing - and I was on the point of fainting! Today, my eyebrows are thin, shapeless and unsightly and I’m resigned to them looking that way forever. Or rather I was…

Internet searches assure me that no matter how over-plucked, over-waxed or overgroomed your eyebrows may be, there is hope still for beautiful, arched, perfectly coiffed specimens. The most extreme method might be an eyebrow transplant (yes really!), but there are other less drastic options! Most of us ladies – and the odd gent too – need to lose a few hairs from the brow line. The easiest solution is tweezing away the stray hairs yourself, but the results are short-lived and the risk of creating the wrong shape is high. Better results can be achieved by a professional, with waxing and threading methods achieving hair removal lasting around 4-6 weeks. Fair or very thin eyebrows may benefit from being tinted. Like hair dye, this changes the colour and lasts 4-6 weeks. A popular look at the moment is HD (High Definition) Brows which focus on shape and design and promise to give you sleek, stylish brows like those enjoyed by the stars. A seven step process that includes a consultation followed by tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing, trimming and finishing with a pencil or brush to fill in any gaps, is described as more than just shaping or tidying but actual eyebrow artistry!

With your brows looking beautiful brows it’s time to move on to the eyelashes. There are numerous mascaras around promising volume, length and thickness, and I can vouch for some of them actually working! My daughter’s naturally long lashes were taken to another level following the application of a new mascara. But what else is on offer? Tinting is an option if your lashes are particularly fair, and it’s not just for girls. I remember the difference it made to my friend’s son after his lashes were darkened. Curling makes straight lashes appear longer, and creates the illusion of wider, brighter, more feminine eyes. Lash-perming, which is best carried out by a professional, can make the results can last for six weeks, which is great for holidays or if you have any big events lined up. Finally, how about having eyelash extensions? This is one of the UK’s fastest growing beauty treatments and involves gluing separate synthetic eyelashes to individual natural lashes to give a luscious, natural look. The amount of curl, length or thickness can vary according to your personal preference and the results last for 8-12 weeks depending on your natural lash growth cycle.

Diamond smugglers, a police conspiracy, high tech spies, and a team of assassins intent on derailing Middle East peace talks…. Customs Investigator James Winter must overcome them all if he is to save his career—and his life. Winter, an ex-MI5 operative, is wrongly accused of colluding with a smuggling ring after it develops a suspicious knack of avoiding the traps set by his team. He battles to clear his name, but as his wife undergoes cancer treatment, he finds it increasingly hard to balance time at her bedside with action to vindicate himself. After his suspension, he sets out to find how the smugglers avoided arrest for so long, and an email from a bothersome high tech supplier puts Winter on the trail of a Mossad spy whom he discovered is somehow involved. It places Winter right in front of the Syrian hit squad. From the windswept Romney Marshes to the frozen streets of Helsinki and thickening Finnish snow, Winter tracks those who caused his suspension. He soon finds there’s a lot more at stake than just his job. In this fast-paced and suspenseful espionage thriller, James Winter stumbles into an international mystery involving Mossad, a Middle East terror plot to destabilize Israel and the global political climate. With the help of a dubious partner, Winter risks his life, but will he be able to stop an international conspiracy and clear his name? Aylesbury based author, Ian Coates, has worked in the high tech electronics industry for thirty years, where he specialized in the design of radio communication equipment. His intimate knowledge of that environment has brought a unique authenticity to his debut novel Eavesdrop.

Your Money Matters

ONE-OFF OPPORTUNITY TO TOP UP YOUR STATE PENSION

The government is providing a one-off opportunity to allow existing pensioners and those reaching State Pension age before 6 April 2016 to increase their additional State Pension. This will be achieved by payment of Class 3A voluntary national insurance contributions (NICs), which will improve their retirement income by obtaining inflationproofed extra additional State Pension. The opportunity to pay will be available from 12 October 2015 to 5 April 2017 and there are two entitlement conditions;

of Class 3A contributions will result in ÂŁ1 per week of additional State Pension Setting a ÂŁ25 a week maximum additional State Pension that can be obtained through payment of Class 3A contributions

Providing for a cooling off period of 90 days from payment during which a refund can be obtained; applying also to the estate of a person who dies during that period The additional pension purchased with class 3A NICs:

Will increase in line with Contributors must have CPI inflation entitlement to a UK State Will be inheritable on Pension death, i.e. a surviving spouse will be entitled They must reach State to at least 50% of the Pension age before 6 additional pension April 2016 Further details of the measures have been announced, including: The amount of a Class 3A contribution (which reduces with age) Specifying that one unit

Will be taxable Will be taken into account in any assessment of income related means tested benefits, including pension credit, housing benefit and help with

council tax The measure will apply to the whole of the UK but this is dependent upon the Royal Assent of the Northern Ireland equivalent of the Pensions Act 2014 to allow for the increase in the additional State Pension.

The government has set up a State Pension top up calculator, which can be found here: www.gov.uk/ state-pension-topup/y/ Individuals should consider making Class 3 contributions to cover gaps in their Basic State Pension provision, where possible, before making Class 3A contributions. These may give a better return than the figures above. Want to read more? Follow us @ClarkHowes or call +44(0)8442 492 209

It’s the Law

MISCONCEPTIONS IN FAMILY LAW

There are many misconceptions in the world of Family Law, the most common of which are : 1. Common Law Marriage There is no such thing! Many people assume that unmarried couples share the same rights as their married counter-parts, however, this is not the case. Cohabitees are unable to claim maintenance for themselves (i.e. other than for a child of the relationship) nor are they entitled to claim against the other party’s pension. Furthermore, cohabitees are not necessarily entitled to an interest in the property and neither do they have an automatic right to continue occupying the family home. 2. The Rights of Fathers Unless the father is married to the mother and/or named on the child’s birth certificate, they do not automatically have parental responsibility for the child. It follows that they may

not be entitled to determine issues relating to the child’s schooling, religion and any medical treatment. This can be acquired by entering into a Parental Responsibility Agreement with the Mother or applying to the Court for an Order. 3. Legal Aid This is still available in certain areas and circumstances. Legal Aid is available for mediation and in some cases where there has been domestic violence or abuse. This can extend to securing protection and/ or dealing with children and financial issues following a relationship breakdown. It is also available in Public Law matters where the Local Authority has child protection concerns and may be available in child abduction cases. 4. Child Maintenance and Contact – These are two separate matters; failure to pay child maintenance does not preclude a parent from having contact with

the child. Applications in respect of contact are determined according to what is in the child’s best interests. 5. Financial Claims following Divorce - a party’s entitlement to claim financial relief against the other is not automatically dismissed by virtue of the divorce. Indeed, in a recent landmark decision, Vince v Wyatt, it was ruled that the Applicant’s claim should not necessarily be struck out in circumstances where the parties divorced in 1992 and the other party went on to found and develop a business worth over £50 million. The only way to dismiss financial claims is by virtue of a Clean Break Order.

Osborne Morris & Morgan are offering a free Family Law clinic at their Leighton Buzzard offices on the last Thursday of each month – contact the Family Law team for further details on 01525 378177.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre's most legendary songs from I Don't Know How to Love Him, Everything's Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.

TO AND THEN THERE WERE NONE! To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Agatha Christie’s Theatre Company, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE returns to the stage to follow in the footsteps of the company's hugely successful Witness for the Prosecution and Black Coffee. A group of 10 strangers are lured to a remote island off the coast of Devon. Upon arrival it is discovered that their host, an eccentric millionaire, is missing... Stranded on the island by a torrential storm and haunted by an ancient nursery rhyme, one by one the guests begin to die... With only the fallen believed to be innocent who amongst them is the killer? Based on the best-selling mystery novel of all time, Agatha Christie's own stage adaptation of this dark and captivating tale will thrill and enthral, as murder unfolds.

Microchip Your Pet From April 2016 it will be compulsory for a dog to be microchipped in the UK. But what exactly is a microchip? Microchipping seeks to aid reuniting lost or stolen pets with their owners with their pets. It should be used in conjunction with the usual tag and collar.

The computer microchip contains a unique identity number and is housed in a type of glass which is compatible with living tissue. The whole thing is about the size of a grain of rice.

Step On It

A special syringe and needle are used to implant the chip between your pet’s shoulder blades. The insertion isn’t painful and a check will be made using a handheld device immediately afterwards to ensure that the chip’s data is readable. The code and owners details are then stored on a national database. It is important to update your details on the database if you move.

Many pets are suitable for microchipping including dogs, cats, rabbits and horses. Charities such as the Dogs Trust are so passionate about its importance that they offer it for free at their rehoming centres and run chipping roadshow events throughout the year. Vets and other organisations charge for microchipping, and costs will vary depending on the size of your pet and where you live.
