Creating a vibrant Sutton Street With eight developments slated or underway, Sutton Street is changing and has the potential to play a major role in creating a vibrant precinct for locals and visitors.

S

utton Street has evolved since the 1860s when Reverend John Sutton bought farming land there and later subdivided it, paving the way for shops, hotels and boarding houses to be built.

During the late 1980s, part of the street became a mall only to reopen in 1997.

It has been a major artery to Redcliffe’s “city heart”, home to shops, businesses and services, with arcades linking it to the foreshore.

Moreton Bay City Council is presently undertaking a Coastal Building Design Review which includes the Redcliffe Peninsula, Deception Bay and Bribie Island.

Sutton Street is part of the review which aims to “improve development outcomes and align them with the kind of neighbourhoods that our community wants to live, work and visit”.

A Council spokesperson says it has previously engaged with the community to “understand what is important to them when it comes to building design” and will seek feedback on the review’s draft report in 2026.

Mayor Peter Flannery says: “With roughly one third of the City’s population living on the coastline, Council wants to get the design of coastal buildings right while accommodating future population growth”.

Open Architecture Studio Founding Director Michael Bailey describes Sutton St as the “back-up vocals” to “lead singer” Redcliffe Pde and a space that has its own personality but is an important “companion”.

“I think it’s a really important street not only for access but it plays a very different role to the esplanade, which is the hero street with views of the 4

water. Your hero retailers are not necessarily located there, so it’s all that secondary stuff that keeps a city going,” Michael explains.

“It also provides a nice space that’s a bit of a respite from the wind and the sun that you might get on the esplanade.”

He says Sutton St has the potential to mirror aspects of the Fish Lane precinct at South Brisbane.

“It (Fish Lane) is this really protected, almost hidden, little gem which has all this subtropical planting and there’s lots of little nooks and crannies and beautiful curated places for you to discover,” Michael explains.

“It’s not South Bank. It’s not the big hero space with views of the city on the water but it is this really important hidden gem that offers some really boutique experiences.

“I think all the little arcades that connect it (Sutton St to Redcliffe Pde), and Bee Gees Way, offer that permeability between the two streets. I think they are really important companions.”

Michael says Fish Lane was a collaboration between Queensland Rail, the City of Brisbane and developers, who curated a vision for the precinct and implemented it. He believes the same approach could be taken with Sutton St. “We’ve actually been talking to some of those developers (in Redcliffe), saying you need to go to council with a coherent masterplan for the whole of the CBD that provides flavour and an urban design guide,” Michael says.

His company is involved in the Stafford Urban Renewal Plan, working with a number of developers to create a marketled precinct vision, and he says a similar plan was successfully

created for Stones Corner.

Michael says Sutton St has “a certain magic to it with Humpybong Creek behind and the foreshore and jetty” nearby.

“I think when you start to add in projects to rejuvenate Humpybong Creek ... getting rid of the carpark that’s on top of the creek and putting that into a multi-storey elsewhere, putting a beautiful plaza there and connecting that to the beach and the jetty, upgrading the jetty to actually have a marina there where boats can pull in for the day. (That is when) you start to talk about a destination that people would really be drawn to.

“I think those are the things, when you start to look at a really vibrant CBD ... then you start to talk about a mature city and a mature city heart that is attractive not just for locals.

“The best sort of tourism destination is actually one the locals love first and foremost.”

Michael says the vision for Sutton St should cater to all ages, with activity early in the morning and entertainment options to create vibrancy at night, particularly for those aged in their 20s and 30s.

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) says Sutton Street is “ripe for uplift and activation”.

“I certainly encourage refreshed thinking about the future of the Redcliffe CBD, maintaining character while unlocking its full potential. Think Fish Lane in South Brisbane and Cairns Esplanade,” he says.

“Sutton Street can support a boutique mix of residential, short-term accommodation and commercial activation.

“A renewed approach should ask how we open up a nighttime economy, secure short-term accommodation, better manage traffic, parking, public transport and walkability.”

DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL 4-8 SUTTON ST Apartments have been selling fast in Essence on Sutton - a new eight-storey development at 4-8 Sutton Street. With 26 three and four-bedroom apartments, Essence on Sutton has attracted off-plan buyers and at the time of writing, only six remain. Essence on Sutton is near the entrance to Suttons Beach car park.

25, 27, 29 SUTTON ST Three blocks, being marketed by Ray White Special Projects, may also join the raft of developments along Sutton St. Collectively covering 1778sqm, the parcel of land is described as a “premium beachside development site”. Though code assessed for a building height of six storeys, marketing details say there’s “scope to increase to eight storeys based on surrounding precedent”.

77 SUTTON ST Plans for a nine-storey, 65apartment development were approved in October. The development, on a 2168sqm block at the corner of Dix St, will have 39 two-bed apartments, 25 three-bed apartments and one four-bed apartment.

1 REDCLIFFE PDE / 82 SUTTON ST One Redcliffe, the huge development on the corner of Redcliffe Pde, Anzac Ave and Sutton St, is in demand with more than 70 per cent of residencies sold. Plans are to build One Redcliffe in two stages, with tower one first. This is expected to take two-and-a-half years. Stage two will take 18 months. When finished One Redcliffe will have 214 apartments, and 14 retail and commercial spaces.

99 SUTTON ST A new social and affordable housing complex has been officially opened. The Brisbane Housing Company (BHC) project provides 82 new homes close to the heart of Redcliffe’s CBD. 165-169 REDCLIFFE PDE/ SUTTON ST Plans which include roof-top dining have been approved at one of Redcliffe’s most prominent waterside venues.

A development application, by Enhance Property Investments, is for a “food and drink outlet” on the site which includes the former Pilpel restaurant. The application

covers a 1757sqm area on four lots, facing Sutton St, the waterfront and bus interchange car park between the site and Redcliffe RSL. 167 SUTTON ST Work is set to start early next year at Lumiere, a development of 18 apartments on a vacant block at the corner of Sutton and Creek streets. Reports suggest the nine-storey building, with “halffloor” three-bedroom apartments, will take one year to build and be completed in February 2027.

CORNER SUTTON ST and ANZAC AVE A development application was approved in 2023 for Bluewater Square shopping centre to be transformed, with a 142-room hotel built on top of the existing structure. The hotel would include a bar on the top floor, a swimming pool, and public art and murals on the front. The centre was sold to a Brisbane-based property group in September this year. The group is assessing its plans for the centre, and no new development application has been submitted to council.

Minister commits to hospital development

ealth Minister Tim Nicholls has committed to delivering the full Redcliffe Hospital expansion project, with work expected to start by September 2026.

Minister Nicholls visited the hospital with State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley last month to announce work will start “shortly” on expansion of the multi-storey carpark after the tender was awarded.

Richard Crookes Construction will deliver the $36 million carpark expansion, which will add three levels and provide 530 carparks.

Registration of interest for contractors to deliver main construction works for the Redcliffe Hospital expansion was due to close on November 21, 2025.

Minister Nicholls says negotiations with builders to deliver the full expansion project

will begin early in the new year, with work likely to start in the third quarter of 2026.

“This is exciting news for the people of Redcliffe,” he says.

“We’ll be making more announcements in relation to the awarding of the tender here and the cost here and the timing here in the next few weeks.

“We’re at about 80 per cent design completion and that’s why we’ve now gone for registrations of interest to get a tenderer in because we want to work with the successful tenderer on the final completion.

“Obviously, the builder will

have an input into what the buildability of that looks like.

They may well look at it and say this design looks fantastic, but we can suggest this (alternative) based on our experience.

“We’ve included things that hadn’t been included in the past around educational facilities, the mortuary which wasn’t here, sterilisation facilities and also patient and staff safety access and egress.

“That’s all been taken into account. What has happened is the previous design was situated squarely over the cultural artifact – the scar tree. What we’ve been able to do is turn that design around, redesign it so there’s better access, more services, an additional six beds and we were able to deal with the scar tree issue and we’ve been in conversations with the Kabi Kabi people about that, taking them on that journey.”

He says the Government intends to deliver the full redevelopment.

This includes at least 210 new overnight beds, expanded services such as maternity, endoscopy and operating theatres.

“We would hope that we would start seeing work on the ground in the third quarter of 2026 – sometime between July and September 2026. If we can go earlier, we will,” Minister Nicholls says.

State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley says the Redcliffe Hospital expansion is critical to support her growing community.

“As someone who used to work at the Redcliffe Hospital, I know how important this expansion is for the people of Moreton Bay,” Ms Dooley says.

“Our Government is delivering more beds, more parking and more services, to improve the hospital experience for everyone.”

The finalised masterplan for the Redcliffe Hospital expansion is due by the end of the year.

Big news in bid for youth housing Kylie Knight

A

concerted community campaign to provide more accommodation for Moreton Bay’s homeless youth has received a significant boost with a property secured and Chameleon Housing ready to replicate its successful programs.

Supporters of Chameleon Housing have worked hard to raise money for a second house to mirror the work the charity has done at its Kippa-Ring base for more than 30 years.

Their efforts came to fruition on November 7, when the organisation’s purchase of a property at Strathpine was finalised. There is one final hurdle to overcome – securing operational funding from the State Government.

Chameleon Housing Manager Nicki Kemp says her team has submitted a proposal to the Department of Housing and is confident of a favourable response.

“We have a timeline to hopefully move in early next year (February), with their support in providing operating funds,” she says. “We’re asking for operating funds of just over $1 million, so staff who are qualified can be here 24/7.”

They would support those living at the house and be part of the Queensland Homelessness

Information Platform (QHIP), helping individuals who phone a hotline and need assistance with housing.

The Strathpine property, formerly known as Clyde House, is on 1.61ha and has five bedrooms with ensuites, a self-contained transitional accommodation unit, two offices, staff accommodation, and large living areas.

It was opened by Lions Youth Emergency Accommodation Centre (LYEAC Pine Rivers) Inc in 1999, and was built to provide safe haven for children referred by the Department of Child Safety, Communities and Disability Services.

LYEAC representative Christine Schofield says the organisation ceased operating in this location about one month ago, with children moved to an alternative residential facility.

“We’re very happy it’s going to be used by Chameleon Housing ... selling it to another organisation that we know would continue the legacy that LYEAC has created,” Christine says.

Chameleon Housing Manager Nicki Kemp says community support has driven the charity’s bid to open a second house, every step of the way, including the home purchase.

Nicki says LYEAC reached out to say they were selling the facility and asked if Chameleon

Housing would be open to a discussion about it.

“We met with them several times. They knew the essence of what Chameleon House does. They recognised that, and came to the party, and are just as much a part of making this happen as we are. It wasn’t just a transaction,” she explains.

“They saw our passion and our spirit and they lowered their price. Without them doing that, I’m not sure that we would have been able to purchase the house.”

Another key player has been community developer Ausbuild, which has held two gala events to raise money for the cause.

Joint Managing Director Matthew Bell says the events raised about $230,000.

“We’ve run two Housing for Happiness fundraisers – one last year and the other the year before. They were really successful nights and they brought the business community together ... we raised over $100,000 at each of those,” he says.

“The intention, originally, was to try to assist them in building a new facility, but the challenges in finding land and working with council ... some of those things seemed to take so long.

“To find something that’s purpose-built and renovated like this ... this is exactly what I thought we could be assisting

them in building. It’s so pleasing to see that they’ve got exactly what they wanted, ready to go.”

Nicki says Chameleon Housing is grateful for the support received from Ausbuild, local businesses and residents.

“It’s phenomenal.

The community has supported us through many different avenues – we’re talking about sausage sizzles at Bunnings, buying our cookbooks, making donations ... all of that money has been pooled for years to be able to achieve this outcome,” she says.

“It’s phenomenal to walk away with a tangible outcome ... to say we did it. It’s really amazing. It’s so exciting.

“The property is very warm and we see the specialness in the future and what this property can bring to many young people.

It will provide over 2000 bed nights, which is so important and needed for young people in this community.”

Nicki says there are 600-1000 young people sleeping rough in the City of Moreton Bay who are homeless and need support.

“We know that the framework that we use at Chameleon House is special and we know that it works. We get amazing outcomes, we see young people thrive and grow,” she says. “We really want to replicate it here.”

Council rejects development bid

lans for a new 10-storey development on Redcliffe’s waterfront have been narrowly rejected by Moreton Bay City Councillors.

The proposal for 78 apartments on a block covering 88-90 Hornibrook Esp and 20-24 Lane St, Clontarf, was turned down by six votes to five.

Councillors’ concerns centred on height and traffic around the 2700sqm site, with car entry and access to be from Lane St, not the four-lane Hornibrook Esp. Stepped from 10 storeys down to seven, the building would be 36.85m high, almost 17m above the planning scheme guideline of 21m maximum.

Public submissions also raised issues over “parking, waste management, flooding, character and the public notification process”.

Council officers recommended the development application (DA) be approved, but Cr Karl Winchester (Div 6) said: “I can’t support this DA in this form.

“I share the concerns of residents that this network of small local streets is already facing parking congestion and issues with line-of-sight,” he said.

“I believe this development would be better served by

allowing vehicle access directly on to Hornibrook Esp, which would reduce vehicle movements and conflicts on Lane St.” Cr Winchester said the adjoining land was also owned by the “proponent” and “will be developed at high-density as well”.

“I had considered putting forward a condition that these two developments work to share an access way to Hornibrook Esp,” … but admitted it would be difficult to enforce.

“Similarly, there are concerns regarding height,” Cr Winchester said, noting “the building directly to the west is also above the 21m maximum”.

“With modern conditions, (buildings) must be tall enough to accommodate those standards. I do not believe this is justification enough for going above the maximum height to the degree it does,” he said.

“I support density and exceeding height where appropriate, (but) I am finding it difficult to support high-rise when there is a negative impact on neighbouring high-rise apartment buildings.”

Cr Sandra Ruck (Div 5) agreed: “I don’t know why developers continually buy pieces of land and then submit plans for buildings that are well over size.

“The town plan is a guide. We do allow, as precedent shows, buildings that might well go over.

But this is excessive. It’s far too high.

“We can’t allow these buildings to continually go over size. I’ve seen in my area, particularly Scarborough and Newport waterside, buildings that are way over height.”

Cr Adam Hain (Div 3) asked: “Where does it end? You’ve got controls in your planning scheme for a reason, otherwise just throw it out.”

But Cr Matt Constance (Div 10) had “absolutely no issues with density or height at this location”.

“I think it is absolutely what we want and should be capitalising on as part of this City,” he said.

“I struggle to see, legally, anything we can really push back on to decline this proposal.

“I think we need to work towards more advocacy with the State Government in terms of giving us more power to force the hand - so to speak - and

be protected better when we do decline things and want to negotiate more with developers.”

While sympathetic to residents, Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said: “With the demand for housing, I like we are finally seeing some increase in height where I envisage developers will want to build and get a return on their investment.

“It is the way we need to move forward and height is our way of protecting 75 per cent of green space we have.”

Cr Yvonne Barlow (Div 7) supported the Deputy Mayor saying she “would prefer to go up, rather than urban sprawl”.

Deputy Mayor Shipway said she would “talk to the Mayor (Peter Flannery) about advocacy to the (TMR) Minister” over traffic being pushed back on to local roads.

“This is happening far too often for us and it’s happening across all Councils about how we deal with these types of outcomes,” Cr Shipway said.

Cancer care centre taking shape at Redcliffe C

onstruction has started on a new cancer care centre at Redcliffe.

Oncology care provider GenesisCare gave Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer and State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne-Dooley an update on construction progress at the site which aims to provide cancer care to more than 450 patients each year.

Slated to open in mid-2026, the centre will be GenesisCare’s 10th in Queensland and part of the new $30 million Altiva Health medical facility by Allamanni Developments.

GenesisCare’s centre will offer high-quality, evidence-based radiation treatments closer to the homes of cancer patients from the Redcliffe Peninsula while boosting healthcare options for the wider Moreton Bay community.

GenesisCare’s experienced and sub-specialised group of senior radiation oncologists will lead the centre and offer patients radiation therapy cancer care across a range of tumour groups.

Located at the Altiva Health development at Silvyn St, the GenesisCare site will operate alongside one of Qscan’s 14

flagship medical imaging and radiology clinics. It will provide patients with convenient access to a single medical centre providing all radiation oncology diagnosis, staging and treatment requirements.

Redcliffe Hospital’s medical oncology, allied health and radiation oncology consulting services will be a short distance away, offering patients access to comprehensive cancer services without the need to commute long distances between appointments.

More than 35,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year, most commonly with prostate, melanoma and breast cancers.

Modelling suggests that almost half of Australians (48.3%) diagnosed with cancer would benefit from radiation therapy.

Former cancer patient and member of GenesisCare’s Consumer Advisory Committee John Dowling, who has been actively involved in fundraising and cancer support groups in the area, says: “This is a fabulous idea for the fast-growing City of Moreton Bay. Most people don’t think about cancer until they get it, but a high-quality facility like this will give locals laying down

their roots confidence in living and succeeding in the area. It will be a great boost to local health services.”

GenesisCare Radiation Oncologist and Queensland Medical Director Dr Marie Burke OAM, says: “We know that accessing care close to home can be critical for cancer patients who are faced with so many emotional, social and physical challenges.

“To have treatment locally is extraordinarily valuable.

Currently many of the patients will travel to Chermside or into the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital to access treatment.

It will enable them to access treatment closer to home.”

The private centre will be largely subsidised by Medicare to ensure all patients have access.

“You don’t need private health insurance to access outpatient radiation oncology services and 80-90 per cent of the cost is covered by Medicare,” Dr Burke says.

“We’re very flexible with our costs so for people who are financially disadvantaged, we always take that into consideration ... if people need some fee reduction.

It certainly will be available to all patients on the Peninsula.

“The philosophy in all of our Genesis Care Centres is that new patient consultations are done within a week of receiving the referrals. Patients will receive very rapid access to treatment.”

Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer says: “This centre will strengthen Redcliffe’s existing healthcare infrastructure and create more comprehensive cancer services available to local patients near their homes”.

State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne-Dooley says: “My experience as a registered nurse and as founder of an inhome hospice care service has shown me the importance of receiving care locally, in one’s community with the comfort of family, friends and the things you cherish close by”.

Allamanni Developments Acquisitions Manager Irina Monnier says the company identified a unique opportunity to deliver a much-needed healthcare facility on the 4500m2 site.

“We were thrilled to create Altiva Health, a high-quality medical centre directly benefiting the Redcliffe community. With major tenants Qscan and GenesisCare secured, only one tenancy remains available for lease,” she says.

he contract to build Suttons Beach Pavilion has been awarded and construction is due to start early next year.

Work will take about 18 months on a new pavilion, landscaping, public changing rooms, new shade structures and upgraded car park.

There will also be new food and beverage outlets at the site by the latter half of 2027, subject to a separate tender process that is ongoing.

“We can’t wait to see work start at the site, bringing us a step closer to the fantastic waterfront facilities envisaged for Suttons Beach,” Mayor Peter Flannery says.

“Locals and visitors will be able to enjoy a vibrant hospitality scene and experience the beautiful peninsula beach with ample shade and amenities in our new landscaped grounds.

“We’re particularly pleased to add one of our accessible

Council has secured a $12.1 million investment from the SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund for the development.

Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer says the project will be a boon for tourism and economic activity on the Redcliffe Peninsula for years to come.

“We all have so many great memories of this beautiful foreshore area and soon families will be able to make their own

new memories with the new pavilion as well,” she says.

State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley says Suttons Beach is a “place of wonderful history, connection and beauty and we want it to continue to be that for generations to come”.

Cr Karl Winchester (Div 6) adds: “This one has taken some planning, so it’s great news for the community it’s now come to fruition and work is about to start”.

lans have been lodged for 70 new apartments and shops at a high-profile site in Redcliffe’s CBD. The proposals submitted to Moreton Bay City Council, are for a seven-storey development with 106 parking spaces at 23-27 Anzac Ave. Five levels would be residential apartments – 14 on each floor above parking on the first level and ground floor, which would also have three commercial tenancies.

Close to Redcliffe’s waterfront, the development would have 15 three-bedroom units, 50 twobedroom units and five onebedroom units.

The 3423sqm block, of which 45m fronts on to Anzac Ave, currently has an office building and vacant land.

The application says the multistorey mixed-use development “has been designed to activate the street frontage … by connectivity with the footpath area”.

he remarkable generosity of Moreton Bay residents has been revealed at the Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital fifth birthday celebrations.

More than $1.3 million has been raised during the past five years by the fundraiser, which is an initiative of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation.

The money has helped deliver 76 Redcliffe Hospital projects of “hope and healing for patients at every stage of their life”.

RBWH Foundation Chief Finance and Impact Officer Hayley Caton pledged ongoing support for the partnership.

“Thank you to the Moreton Bay community for your commitment and for creating a legacy of impact for the people that you love,” Ms Caton said.

Last month’s birthday celebration at The Komo featured a showcase of projects funded during the past five years. They included: • ‘Forgotten Fathers’ research, investigating trauma during childbirth complications • Renovation projects and activities which promote staff wellness • Support of Eat Walk Engage, a program reducing the risk of delirium in older patients •M edical equipment for maternity and premature baby care

“A lot of patients are so frail they could never have another vacation or holiday, so for them to have that space, be able to forget for a few minutes or a few hours they’re in hospital, to be able to spend quality time with their friends, family, pets - that’s invaluable.”

Speakers included Raise it for Redcliffe Hospital Impact Partner and business owner Shane Crew, of Crew Legal.

Crew Legal’s Spring Gala Ball recently raised $40,000 towards the purchase of a Babyroo neonatal warmer for sick and premature babies.

“We want to leave a positive footprint in our community. The

hospital is the most important institution we have in our community,” Shane said.

“We’ve seen firsthand where the funds have gone. We’ve toured the hospital, we’ve seen the Rehabilitation Unit, the Palliative Care Unit and we thank hospital staff members for everything they do.”

Crew Legal has committed to raising a final $12,000 needed to buy the Babyroo before Christmas.

The power of giving was summed up by Redcliffe Hospital Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services Keith Von Dohren.

“I see the impact, every day, on families and loved ones in times of absolute critical change in a patient’s life - you cannot underestimate how much that has helped our community,” Mr Von Dohren said.

he Breakfast Club Redcliffe will be serving Christmas lunch to the needy this year, with more than 100 people expected to attend.

Chairperson Michelle Gilchrist says the charity will team up with Redcliffe Uniting Church and hopefully members of the Redcliffe Community Care Network to make it happen.

Volunteers will serve lunch to anyone who turns up to the Peninsula Support Hub, corner of Portwood St and Oxley Ave, Redcliffe, on Christmas Day from 11am-1pm. Registrations are not needed.

“It’s open to anybody, anywhere who wants to join us,” Michelle says.

“We are hoping we’ll be able to extend to outside with some gazebos and tables.

“It’s just a case of being here between 11am and 1pm and we’ll make sure you have something to eat.”

Reverend Tim Griggs says the day brings the community together, with volunteers travelling across the City of Moreton Bay to help.

“We find there are a lot of people who are lonely on Christmas Day, but they are happy to come along and serve as volunteers,” Tim says.

probably enough volunteers for Christmas Day, but help will be needed for meal-prep on Christmas Eve from 10am.

Michelle says The Breakfast Club has received donations of roasting meat but will need to source fresh fruit and vegetables, ingredients for desserts, soft drinks and decorations closer to the time.

Pausing to remember Kylie Knight

lear blue skies and gentle waves provided the perfect backdrop for last month’s Remembrance Day service at Redcliffe.

The service at ANZAC Place was well attended as locals and visitors paused to remember those who have died serving our country.

Past Redcliffe RSL President Neville Cullen delivered the main address, highlighting the significance of Remembrance Day, which marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the moment the armistice was signed in 1918 and the guns fell silent on the Western Front and WWI ended.

He also recounted the significance of the poppy as an enduring symbol of remembrance.

“Today, we assemble to remember all servicemen and women who have paid the

ultimate sacrifice in all wars and conflicts that Australians have fought and died in,” Mr Cullen said.

“We also remember those returned servicemen and women who served and returned from those wars and conflicts ... many of them affected both physically and mentally by the consequences of that service.”

Mr Cullen paid tribute to allied servicemen and women who have served alongside

Australians, and civilians who have perished in times of war.

“I also ask that you remember our current servicemen and women who are serving in the Australian Defence Forces, some of whom are serving overseas today,” he said.

“May God protect them and bring them home safely.”

Members of the 20th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Squadron 6ESR RAE formed the Catafalque Party at the service.

The Salvation Army’s Major Dean Clutterbuck delivered the Invocation asking the crowd to remember those who had been lost serving their country and the loved ones who mourned them.

Acting Redcliffe RSL President Karen Hemers presented Redcliffe RSL’s Dan Keighran VC Remembrance Day Award to Peter Cumming for his “outstanding commitment to assisting veterans with their wellbeing”.

Officers used to seeing double

A

n extraordinary coincidence has unfolded at Redcliffe Police Station - three of the police officers each have an identical twin.

While their careers have taken them in different directions, the shared bond of twinhood connects them in ways few colleagues could imagine.

Senior Constable Felicity Ryan works in frontline policing, handling the daily challenges and unpredictability of the job.

Her twin sister, Rosey, admires her courage from a distance.

“I could never do what Felicity does. I’d be far too scared,” Rosey says.

Instead, Rosey has carved out her own path, working in administration for a small family business.

Special Constable Mitch Smith also shares his life with a mirror image. His identical twin, Miles, is also serving the community as an auxiliary firefighter and electrician in a small country town in Queensland.

While Mitch patrols the streets, enforcing the law and helping

those in need, Miles faces emergencies of another kind.

Both are proud to serve the community, each in their own high-pressure role, united by the same dedication to helping others.

Completing the trio is Senior Constable Jess Wellan, whose identical twin sister, Ruby, shines in the classroom.

Ruby is a special needs school teacher, shaping the future of young minds, while Jess protects the community from harm.

Their roles may be worlds apart, but both embody care, patience, and leadership - qualities that reflect their shared upbringing.

Convoy for Kids rolls into Redcliffe

W

et weather may have washed out the 2025 Brisbane Convoy for Kids auction and truck show at Redcliffe on November 1, but it didn’t stop an impressive number of trucks making their way to the Peninsula and raising money for a good cause.

The convoy of 778 trucks - some from as far as West Australia travelled 62km from Larapinta to Redcliffe Showgrounds.

The event, in its 16th year, raises money for Queensland’s only children’s hospice Hummingbird House, which provides essential care and support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

Brisbane Convoy for Kids spokesperson Dana Browne says the event raised more than $200,000 on convoy day.

“Unfortunately, our Truck Show presentation had to be postponed, as well as approximately 50 per cent of our auction,” Dana Browne says.

“Our Lead Truck for 2025 was Jim Bellingham from Polytec - and that truck alone, raised $100,025.

“Our total lead truck auction raised over $208,000 with 30 trucks vying for the lead truck position.”

Organisers held a follow-up event at Yatala on November 15 so it could run its auction and truck show presentation.

National award for ANZAC program R

edcliffe Special School’s commitment to honouring veterans and serving Australian Defence Force members has earnt it a national award.

The school won the Specialist Educational Settings Award category in the Anzac Day Schools’ Awards competition run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It received a certificate, trophy and $2000.

Redcliffe Special School Senior Teacher Michael Turnbull says the competition recognises the work of students and teachers.

The purpose of the competition is for students to engage actively with veterans, or current serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, and research content related to a theme in Australia’s

wartime history. “ T h e entry from Redcliffe Special School showcased the range of work our students took part in. I developed a four-week curriculum that covered the breadth of the ANZAC legend and provided opportunities for all students to be included regardless of their level of disability,” Michael explains.

“These activities included tactile exploration and play, art and expression, listening to letters from the front, watching and responding to documentaries, listening to stories, writing their own poems, journals and stories, and cooking.

“The whole school visited the (Redcliffe) RSL ‘Memorabilia Gallery’ and got to listen to and ask questions of veterans. We built our own display in our school hall. We invited students to bring photos of service members from their families to display.

“The RSL supported our ANZAC Day service and also organised for soldiers and vehicles from 20 EOD SQN. 6 ESR to visit our school. The RSL kindly donated a memorial which we utilised for the first time in this year’s ceremony.”

Michael, a veteran with 25 years’

service in the Australian Army, says Redcliffe Special School and Redcliffe RSL share a strong bond.

“Whilst the students were at the RSL museum talking to the veterans on Anzac Day, we were asked if we wished to provide a Remembrance Day display later in the year. We, of course, accepted,” he says. “I look forward to creating new, unique and insightful experiences for my students and continuing to build connection with the RSL.” The school received $1000 from Redcliffe RSL to “support a meaningful program”.

• T alk before you go. Explain what you’re shopping for and involve your child in the plan around where you’re going and what you’re planning to buy. Let them know what you expect of them. Give them one or two jobs to do like choose a holiday ornament, bonbons, or other items on your list.

• Keep it short. Several brief trips are often better than one marathon shopping adventure. If your trip goes longer than planned, stop for a snack or drink. Break up the trip by doing something your child enjoys, like the free entertainment many shopping centres offer.

• Tune in and have fun. Be present with your child on the trip – talk, laugh and have fun together. Let your child know when they are doing something you like. Give them a smile, a hug or another sign of affection to let them know they are loved, and their behaviour is appreciated.

• Encourage kindness and goodwill to others. If your children are buying gifts for others, talk to them about what that person might like to receive and the best stores to visit before you set out. Praise them for thinking of others.

Campers discover holiday haven

L

ong before holiday apartments dotted the foreshore, Redcliffe was a popular destination for visitors happy to bring their own accommodation.

The Peninsula became a tent city from the 1930s to 1960s, when many industries in Brisbane and Ipswich closed for Christmas. Campers were inventive, making collapsible furniture, which could fit into the back of a small ute.

Long-time Peninsula resident and business owner the late Ken Peters told History Redcliffe his family often travelled to Redcliffe for holidays when he was a child and were frequent Sunday picnickers well into the 1950s.

The tent was large and wellequipped with a raised wooden floor. It had a stove, sink, bed bunks and ‘dressing room’ and was a home away from home.

Johnson property at Redcliffe Pde, near the Ambassador Hotel, and later further south along Redcliffe Pde. He estimated 1520 families spent the holidays there.

Others have similar memories of camping at Scarborough in the 1940s, as one contributor to the Pictorial History of Redcliffe and Moreton Bay Facebook page recalled.

“A typical camping day would be: breakfast, game of cricket on the beach, community morning tea, swimming with cousins then whole families, lunch, sitting in a deck chair enjoying the afternoon breeze and view, at low tide, exploring the reefs collecting samples, maybe a last game of cricket, evening meal, or movie at Scarborough theatre,” he said.

“Often the day was interspersed with rowing the small boat or paddling the canoe,

visiting a jetty, fishing/exploring.

On the cool of the evening, after the meal, many families would stroll along the beach, catching up with friends and neighbours.”

Conditions were basic, with kerosene or carbide lamps and kerosene stoves. Most furniture was homemade and only a few campers had a radio.

“A common practise was for the families to spend up to six weeks camping. Workers, when their holidays finished, (then generally a maximum of 2/3 weeks) would travel by Hornibrook buses to Sandgate to catch trains to Brisbane for their work,” the man said.

“The weather was mostly balmy, with warm days and cooling breezes from midday.

Occasionally a cyclone or very severe weather would arrive.

Tents along the beach front, especially on the Southern end

of the beach would often be swamped by waves breaking.”

Artist Joy Harris, whose painting which depicted people camping along the foreshore was displayed as part of the Redcliffe Arts Society’s First Fifty Years exhibition, has fond memories of Peninsula holidays.

“The happiest days of my childhood took place holidaying at Redcliffe in the community of folk who swam, fished, talked and made ‘volcanos’ on the beach at night,” she said.

Her family would travel from Ipswich to Redcliffe. Her father would drive a truck to a reserved space in Mayor Bob Bradley’s yard in Sutton St. Joy and her mother would travel by train and bus.

As time went on and camping set-ups became more advanced, council limited camping along the foreshore and designated sites became caravan parks.

Essential network for older women T

he Redcliffe Peninsula branch of the Older Women’s Network is moving to a more central location, which it hopes will help it attract more members.

Convenor Gail Becke says the group has moved from its former Woody Point meeting place and changed its name to broaden its membership base.

“We’re trying to grow this group. It used to be called the Woody Point branch, but it has officially changed to the Redcliffe Peninsula branch,” Gail says.

The Woody Point group has been running for about 10 years.

The founders of OWN Australia believe an older women’s group is essential for building community, support and shared understanding among women in similar life stages.

It’s December! Cue summer, the festive season, holidays and outdoor dining.

Whatever your plans, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, slap on some sunscreen and get your garden looking merry and bright.

here’s something magical about lights throughout the garden and with solar options now readily available, why not string a few through trees, along rooflines or railings, around the kids’ cubby house or through pot plants and enjoy the nightly glow.

Pots of colour: Brighten up a corner, create a centrepiece, underplant your trees or fill a spare hanging basket with brightly coloured annuals such as petunias. You’ll find 10 packs of seasonal colour in the garden centre now perfect for such plantings, even red and white flowering packs.

Celebrate a bush Christmas with a living tree. A native lilly

pilly, Daintree pine or any potted shrub can be decorated for the festive season then either planted into the garden or potted into a larger vessel for next year.

Lawn care: Treat your lawn to an edge trim and mow, keeping it slightly longer and apply a solution of Seasol or Seamax to encourage healthy root growth to help it through the warmer months.

Nature’s gift: Create a little festive cheer with a homemade wreath using sticks, flowers and foliage from the garden.

Spray painted pine cones, bows around pots and mini wreaths of rosemary all add to that yuletide feel.

Give the gift of green. There’s an endless list of amazing houseplants to suit even the most challenged gardener. Mini gardens of succulents or indoor plants, quirky air-plants, big bowls of flowering annuals or a basket of assorted edible plants with a homemade gift tag are practical and pretty.

A centrepiece always looks beautiful and can be easily achieved by decorating your table with a selection of leaves, branches and twinkling tealights.

Don’t forget to add a foliage sprig or flower tied in a bow to the chair backs with a place tag for instant dinner party appeal.

Get cleaning: Give everything a spruce up. Pressure wash pathways, clean out bird baths and fountains, cut back any dead or dying branches and foliage, deadhead any flowers that have finished blooming and treat the garden to a fresh layer of mulch.

FISHING TIPS with

Estuary and land based Inshore fishing will be impacted by significant rainfall in the catchment and this will move the fish around a bit.

The foreshores have been fishing well, particularly around Brighton, Clontarf and the Ted Smout Bridge. Bream, yellowfin and sand whiting and dusky flathead have been the mainstays. The dusky flathead have been falling to live herring and various soft and hardbodied lures. Yabbies are a great bait for bream and whiting.

Expect bream to keep increasing in abundance leading up to Christmas and into January.

Boat-based anglers in the Pine River and Hays Inlet have also been doing well on bream, whiting and flathead but have also been landing a few spotted javelin fish and mulloway as well. Big soft plastic lures including Vibe type lures have been working well in the channel habitat.

Inshore Reefs and Bay Waters Snapper are present on the local inshore reefs with quite a few solid fish caught and an occasional fish caught by landbased anglers. Grass sweetlip and barred javelin fish are also around and will increase in abundance as the water continues to warm. A few tailor will be around the inshore reef

Time to get some fresh seafood for Christmas!

Offshore The reefs around Cape Moreton really are a mixing pot of species and this gives anglers a diversity of opportunity. Finding a weather window can be a challenge but if you can safely get out, expect a few snapper, pearl perch, Maori

cod, Moses Perch, gold spot wrasse, Venus tuskfish and teraglin. A few yellowtail kingfish of various sizes have been present as well. With the warmer weather, there will be a mix of more tropical offshore species such as hussar and green jobfish.

edges and school mackerel will be in more open waters.

The various chrome lures work well for both these species and always carry a range of sizes.

Fingers crossed it will be a good spotted mackerel season, but their presence is strongly linked to the abundance of the tiny bait fish they feed on. If the bait comes into the bay then they will show up, otherwise the big schools may bypass Moreton Bay altogether on their southerly migration which starts

around the Bowen area. Early mornings are generally the best time for chasing pelagic species in Moreton Bay. The reef ledges on the western side of Moreton Island will yield snapper, grass sweetlip, spangled emperor and black spotted tuskfish.

Crabbing December is a great month for crabbing and fresh crabs are always great for Christmas lunch.

The recent rain has stirred up the mud crabs, so if you are line

fishing the estuaries, definitely set some pots while you are fishing.

Mud crabbing is generally best around the full and new moons.

Blue swimmer crabs have also been active and this will continue for the next few months. While they are widespread, the better quality blue swimmer crabs are coming from the deeper water.

Make sure any pots that you use are appropriately weighted to ensure that they are not moved by tides and have enough rope on them for the depth fished. Each pot also needs to be appropriately marked with the surname and the address of the person using it.

Moreton Island Moreton Island will be busy this month with tailor, swallowtail dart, sand whiting and dusky flathead being your main choices for target species.

The area from Comboyuro Point to North Point, the southern part of the island around Reeders Point, and the western beaches will be your pick but there will also be fish along the surf beach as well. Yabbies is the best bait for swallowtail dart and worms for sand whiting. I prefer a late afternoon rising tide around the Tailor Bight stretch of beach on the northern side of the island for them. Tailor have also been about on the northern side of Moreton Island, and you can look to target them there around the full moon.

here will be no summer holiday for Liam Wilson at All Star Boxing Academy - just hard work as he prepares for his next fight and a possible shot at the world title.

Wilson, who was born in Redcliffe, lives at Caboolture and trains in Lawnton, is already counting down to his first challenge of 2026.

On Friday, January 16 he steps back into the ring at Brisbane Entertainment Centre to face Rodex Piala, from the Philippines.

The bout is on the undercard to the highly anticipated Nikita Tszyu v Michael Zerafa clash for the WBO International Middleweight crown.

Wilson, 29, has won his past four fights and moved up to three in the WBO junior

lightweight rankings … within sight of world title shot.

Once champion Emanuel Navarrete and number one challenger Charley Suarez have had a rematch, ordered by the WBO, Wilson may be next in line.

However, he must beat Piala, 30, a “slick fighter” who has won 12 of his 13 professional fights but never fought in Australia.

Wilson has 17 wins from 20 bouts and said on social media: “Save the date we’re back in Brisbane. Time to get back to work, doing what I do best”.

This fight comes seven weeks after he stopped Jorge Santana with a “left hook from hell” and announced: “I want George Kambosos.

“I’m a proud Australian. So why

wouldn’t you want to make an all-Australian showdown?”

No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose had “no problem with that” and promptly backed Wilson, who is part of the stable, to win.

Ex-world champion Kambosos won his first 20 bouts but has since lost four of six, including recently for the IBF world super lightweight crown.

Construction begins on $4.8 million clubhouse W ork has officially started on construction of a modern and accessible softball clubhouse at Kippa-Ring’s Talobilla Park.

This $4.8 million project is being funded by Moreton Bay City Council and the Federal Government, each contributing $2.4 million.

Mayor Peter Flannery says it will be a game-changer for the city’s softball community.

“This new clubhouse is a huge win for local sport and a great example of all levels of government working together

to deliver for the community,” Mayor Flannery says.

“We’re grateful for the Australian Government’s support through the Thriving Suburbs Program.

“The clubhouse upgrade is an exciting milestone for our city, supporting local sport and attracting international events.

“We already have a reputation for attracting world-class sporting events with City of Moreton Bay recently selected as the host city of the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals 2027.”

Federal Member for Petrie Emma Comer says the Government’s investment reflects its commitment to supporting thriving communities.

“Projects like this not only strengthen local sport but also create opportunity and drive community connection,” Ms Comer says.

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) says: “The new clubhouse will include two changing rooms, an umpire room, amenities, a First Aid room, office,

clubroom, internal storage and a multipurpose kitchen facility”.

Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association President Carrie Te Wani says the investment ensures the future of softball in City of Moreton Bay is bright.

“This is an exciting milestone for us as a club and the sport.

The new clubhouse will give us the space and resources to keep growing the sport and welcoming new members,” Carrie says.

Construction of the clubhouse is due be completed in 2026.
