Bold new era beckons for foodie festival

T

he 2025 Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival is serving up its biggest program yet, with tickets now on sale for what promises to be the most flavour-packed weekend of the year.

Returning to the Woody Point foreshore from August 22-24, the seventh annual event will deliver its largest site, program, and chef line-up to date, marking a bold new era.

Stretching along 1km of waterfront parkland, the expanded site will include five entertainment and demonstration stages, twice the number of food outlets and producers (from previous years), and a staggering 1500 per cent increase in ticketed masterclasses and add-on experiences.

Festival CEO Shane Newcombe says this year’s program reflects a significant investment in guest experiences.

“We’ve listened to feedback and dialled everything up for 2025, from 200 per cent more shade structures and double the seating, to a record number of premium events and immersive experiences,” he says.

“Our expanded offering means festivalgoers can truly curate their own weekend, from relaxed grazing to intimate encounters with leading chefs, wineries and gourmet food producers.”

Moreton Bay City Council Mayor Peter Flannery says the festival’s continued growth reflects the City’s commitment to be a premier destination for major events.

“Last year’s event sold out and it’s no surprise why; this festival has fast become a standout on Queensland’s events calendar,” Mayor Flannery says.

“We’re excited to welcome thousands of visitors to City of Moreton Bay this August to experience our local food

producers and everything else that our spectacular foreshore and hospitality has to offer.”

This year’s headline talent on The Kitchen Stage presented by Ausbuild is led by Julie Goodwin, who will make her festival debut, alongside returning favourite Miguel Maestre.

They’ll be joined by Mike Reid, Matt Golinski, Alastair McLeod, and Simone and Viviana - the 2024 My Kitchen Rules winners, delivering a dynamic blend of star power and substance.

Festival favourites Kim McCosker and Dominique Rizzo will also return.

iguel Maestre is known for his sense of fun and exuberance but, for him, cooking is an expression of love, creativity and who he is.

He will be challenging audiences at this year’s Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival to spend more time in the kitchen, experimenting and growing confidence so they too can discover this unique form of self-expression.

Miguel is genuinely delighted to be returning to the festival for the third time.

“I’m excited because they want me back and when people want you back it’s because you’ve done something right,” he says laughing.

“I’m excited because of the weather, the people, the location.

There’s no place in the world that has a food show in that kind of set-up, and I do lots of them.

“It’s more relaxed and you feel almost like you can talk to everyone.

“It’s got a nice family vibe. I can’t explain it.”

Miguel will bring his live and interactive cooking demonstrations to The Kitchen stage but will also be involved in special ticketed events.

“This year we’re doing a slightly different thing. I’ve got a little restaurant to the side (The Bayview Pavilion) and we’ll be doing three lunches. I’ll be showcasing some different courses, matched with different wines. I’m excited because that’s going to show people my more chef side of things,” he explains.

Miguel has brought cooking to life on our television screens for more than a decade, but the

opportunity to connect with people at events like Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival brings him the most joy.

“Cooking food is amazing and the reward of people tasting your food is what really motivates a chef. This is real. There’s nothing more spontaneous than being in a live cooking demonstration in front of people,” he explains.

“You don’t know what to expect, who’s going to be there, their reaction … that makes you feel alive.

“I hope they learn a little bit of cooking. That’s the main thing.

I hope they have a good time. I think life is so boring already, so stressful.

“For one hour, I can show you how to cook something, make you smile and create some food memories. That’s my aim.”

In an age when you can order a box of ingredients and a recipe, or order complete meals to be delivered to your home, how does Miguel challenge people to have a go at cooking for real?

“We need to eat three times a day. I mean how crazy (is it) that we don’t even have time to invest in ourselves to do the cooking?” he asks.

“Cooking for yourself and the people you love is like spreading a little bit of who you are. You get to share who you are with the people that you love. How do you not want to do that for at least 10 minutes a day?

“I think we’re losing a little bit of the plot in life. We prioritise things that are not so important, but cooking is very important.”

Miguel says making a homecooked meal does not need to take hours and can be done in as little as 10 minutes.

ou could be forgiven for thinking there’s a limit to what you can cook with just four ingredients, but Kim McCosker says the evolution of food trends and equipment continues to inspire new recipes.

The queen of turning simple into spectacular is returning to Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival from August 22-24, with a unique take on entertaining.

Kim is the author of the 4 Ingredients series of cookbooks, publishing 41 since the first one became a bestseller in 2007.

Eighteen years on, Kim continues to devise recipes, using feedback and suggestions from readers, to help home cooks create quick, easy, delicious and nutritious meals that cater to evolving dietary requirements.

“When we started and we wrote our very first gluten-free book, super foods didn’t exist … there were no chia seeds, there was no quinoa, there was no kale.

Superfoods as a food category didn’t exist,” Kim explains.

“Flour – there was selfraising, plain and corn. Now, you’ve got potato flour, banana flour, coconut flour, rice flour and each of these flours has different properties and different outcomes.

“As ingredients grow and expand, so too do the recipes you can make from them.”

The evolution of equipment available to home cooks, such as the Thermomix, air fryer and pie maker, has also generated demand for quick and easy recipes.

Kim is looking forward to returning to Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival in 2025, saying the organisers “lift the bar” each year.

“This event is one of the premier food and wine events

in Queensland and I honestly believe also in Australia. It is on another level,” she says.

The hostess with the mostest is planning to literally mix things up during this year’s festival, with cocktail-making shenanigans and a High Tea event focusing on entertaining.

“I’m very passionate about home entertaining and I know for a fact that there are certain things that cause major stress – moving home, public speaking and entertaining,” Kim says.

“I’m very passionate about simplifying entertaining because everyone celebrates something and it’s getting more and more expensive to celebrate out (at restaurants).

“I also know how highly valued something homemade is. When you entertain, it brings people together and together is such a beautiful place to be.”

Kim will share sweet and savoury recipes home cooks can prepare with ease but will also reveal how to present food beautifully.

“Food is first eaten with the eye. There’s lots of little things you can do to take something really quite simple and turn it into something a little bit spectacular,” she says.

“That is what I am the queen of … the simple to spectacular.

“It’s going to be such a lovely event.

MasterChef proudly stays true to self Kylie Knight

J

ulie Goodwin was catapulted into the national spotlight when she won the first series of MasterChef in 2009 and, while the experience exposed her to new techniques, she remained true to her personal style of cooking and remains so today.

For Julie, who is part of a star-studded line-up at this year’s Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival, cooking is about creating food that’s full of flavour and easy to share.

She has taken this philosophy onto MasterChef twice more since 2009 - MasterChef Australia All-Stars in 2012 and the Fans & Favourites season in 2022.

“I think each time I’ve gone onto MasterChef it’s kind of confirmed that my style has developed from cooking for my family,” she explains.

“I love food that can be shared in the middle of the table. Especially this last time (on MasterChef), it was a real celebration of each of our individual styles and what we bring, literally, to the table.

“I felt I had permission to cook the way I love to cook, which is big, sharing food.”

During the past 15 years, she has become a bestselling cookbook author, media personality and mental health advocate.

She is also developing a pilot cooking program inside juvenile detention centres.

“I go into the detention centre and do a six-week program with a handful of boys and I teach

them how to cook. It’s more than just the cooking that we do together. We sit down around a table, share the meal. It’s a community-building exercise,” Julie explains.

“My goal is teach them not just those cooking skills but also what it looks like to create that family environment and share the responsibility of cooking and cleaning and to share the food that’s on the table.”

Julie is hoping the program will broaden participants’ perception of food in a similar way MasterChef did for her.

“I’ve been exposed to a lot more in the food world since MasterChef. Prior to that, I was cooking for my little family and friends. Since then, it’s opened up a whole new world of food for me,” she says.

“I’ve developed a lot of skills that I never had before but in terms of my style, that hasn’t changed.”

She has instead used those skills, ideas and new ingredients to enhance her style.

So, what does she enjoy cooking at the moment?

“The weather has started to cool down so I’m doing those beautiful slow braises,” Julie says.

When she spoke to The Redcliffe Peninsula, she had recently cooked old-school, braised chops for her parents.

“My mum teared up. She said it reminded her of being a kid,” Julie says.

“When it’s cold, I like the hearty stuff. It’s always got to be big flavours. It’s got to be tasty.

It can’t be dull. We’re not on the planet long enough to eat boring food.”

Julie is hoping her cooking demonstrations at Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival will inspire audiences to try cooking a new dish.

“Hopefully they’ll walk away with some little tips and tricks that make their cooking easier.

Hopefully they’ll also walk away with some fun memories and having had a bit of laugh and just a really good time,” she says.

“I actually love getting face to face with people. It’s completely different to putting out a cookbook or doing something on the telly. I love to chat with people. I love to answer questions. I love to ask questions … I love to find out what people want to know.

“The energy at these events is always so up and so wonderful and people are happy to be there. I draw so much joy from these things.”

Speaking with Julie, it’s evident cooking has brought much more to her life than tasty cuisine.

‘Rescue Plan’ for Redcliffe hospital expansion Kylie Knight

T

he State Government has announced a ‘Hospital Rescue Plan’ to deliver the Redcliffe Hospital expansion project among others across Queensland but it remains unclear when it will be built and in what form.

The announcement was made on April 23 following a review of the former Labor State Government’s statewide hospital expansion program.

Late last year, the new LNP Government appointed a team led by hospital infrastructure specialist Sam Sangster to “scrutinise delivery timelines and construction sector constraints to save Queensland’s Hospital Capacity Expansion Program”.

The Sangster Review found the Redcliffe Hospital expansion could be delayed by at least two years and would now cost $2,122,000,000, instead of the $1,060,000,000 initially announced.

“The present project is undeliverable in its current form - without resolution of the scar tree issue, the resolution of the clinical scope matters, the technical challenges with expanding the car park and the risk allocation driving subcontractor pricing, the project will continue to experience delays and unmitigable increased forecast costs,” it said.

program … has exposed major mismanagement including delays, under-funded projects and significant design flaws which left critical health services missing from hospitals”.

It says its “Hospital Rescue Plan” will create 2600 hospital beds across Queensland.

The plan includes “at least 210 new beds and an expansion for the Redcliffe Hospital”, six more beds than announced by the previous government.

At this stage, it is unclear when the Redcliffe Hospital expansion will be finished. It was originally due to be completed in 2028.

State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley said the Hospital Rescue Plan “is a great outcome for Redcliffe, and we can now be confident that we will have the healthcare

infrastructure and services we need for the future”.

Ms Dooley said the State Government would deliver services including maternity, mental health short stay and surgical; a new, fully developed plan that meets hospital and health service and clinical needs; a design that ensures the safety of nurses, doctors and healthcare workers; better use of the site to maximise service delivery and safety, and avoid cultural artefacts; and more car parks.

Work stopped at the Redcliffe Hospital expansion site weeks ago and it is unclear when it will resume.

Preparatory work had started, with construction of a ninestorey clinical services building the first element expected in

the project plan developed by the previous Labor State Government.

The full project was expected to deliver 204 new beds, ambulatory care and a significant expansion of existing services including theatres, birthing, endoscopy and a range of other clinical and support services.

Opposition Health Spokesman Mark Bailey refuted claims planning was rushed, saying years of department work and business case development went into the program.

He said projects were as well planned as they could be at the time and, ahead of caretaker period before the election, they were on track to deliver 2200 beds by 2028.

Call for Safe Sleepz service volunteers Kylie Knight

T

he Breakfast Club Redcliffe is looking for more volunteers to help run its Safe Sleepz bus, so it can operate more nights each week and help people in need.

The service, formerly known as sleepbus, is in the process of being rebranded to Safe Sleepz, with operations now transferred to The Breakfast Club Redcliffe.

At present, a team of about 50 volunteers helps provide the service on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The Breakfast Club Redcliffe’s Michelle Gilchrist is grateful to this dedicated and passionate group who have kept the service running and is hoping more people will be keen to help out.

She would love for Safe Sleepz

TO FIND OUT MORE: about volunteering and using the service, email redcliffeservice@ thebreakfastclub.org.au to be available seven nights a week, providing a temporary option for people sleeping rough including families, couples and single people.

“From October, when the bus got here and we started the service, we knew the need was great and it’s progressively grown,” Michelle explains.

“The need is there and, with what’s going on out there at the moment, people can’t find housing. They need somewhere to feel safe and that’s the purpose of the bus.

“They can get a good night’s sleep without interruption and feel normal again for a little while.”

Safe Sleepz needs bus drivers, service volunteers until 10pm, overnight caretakers from 8pm6am and people to help clean the bus the next morning from

about 7.30-8.30am.

The bus is parked at the corner of Fisher Drive and Creek St, Redcliffe, on the nights it is operating.

People can start boarding about 8.30pm and everyone is settled for the night by 10pm.

T

he race is on for the City of Moreton Bay to prepare for the greatest show on earth – the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Confirmation we have a Games venue, the new $200 million 10,000-seat Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Stadium, came in March.

But wish lists for businesses, residents and visitors will go far beyond the centre’s shovelready site at The Mill, in Petrie.

A State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Department spokesperson said “site precincts and city activations” will be delivered by local Councils.

There will also be a “pipeline of opportunities” for businesses in the “lead-up to, during and following the 2032 Games”.

Mayor Peter Flannery says Moreton Bay City Council “would be interested in opportunities at The Mill and possibly a range of locations”.

“We’re also focused on legacy planning and working with a range of stakeholders to ensure significant benefits for the City.”

With planning in its early stages, details are few …. but we found plenty of suggestions.

Our “clear and calm waters” are ideal for 600m beach sprints, 6-8km coastal races (Scott’s Point to Scarborough?) and 10km open water swim (Pelican Park-Suttons Beach-and back?).

He says Olympic ‘Live Venues’ could be at Pelican Park, Redcliffe Pier/Captain Cook Park, Petrie Mill and Centenary Lakes at Caboolture, with upgrades a post-Games legacy.

Business mentor Brad Flynn believes the “biggest opportunity for our region is around

showcasing it to the world”.

Attract TV networks to show our “islands, whales, marine life, calm beaches and events such as the Redcliffe Markets and the festivals”, Brad says.

He also suggests A Day by the Bay itinerary: Bayside breakfast/ morning coffee – then Redcliffe Markets - seafood lunch at Scarborough Marina - sunset drinks in the Belvedere before an evening at Olympic Live venues.

Rob Comiskey, Co-Founder and Director of The Comiskey Group, which runs Eatons Hill and Sandstone Point Hotels, says they are talking to government about Games’ opportunities.

Rob says infrastructure and

hospitality are key areas, with so many potential visitors looking for places to stay, eat and visit.

“We are excited about it,” he says.

ork will soon begin on the upgrade of the intersection of Elizabeth Ave, George St and Miller St at Kippa-Ring.

The State Government has finalised design for safety improvements with work expected to start early May and due to be completed in about six months, weather and construction conditions permitting.

This presently unsignalised intersection has a history of crashes, including a fatal

motorcyle crash last month.

Traffic signals will be installed, including pedestrian crossings across George St, Miller St and the southern side of Elizabeth Ave. The upgrade will also modify the intersection, removing the left-turn slip lane from George St to Elizabeth Ave to accommodate traffic signals and improve visibility.

Other safety measures include road resurfacing, new on-road bike lanes and green paint at conflict points for improved bike rider safety and upgraded LED street lighting.

The $9 million upgrade is funded on a 50:50 basis, with the Federal and State Governments each committing $4.5 million.

Member for Redcliffe KerriAnne Dooley says the State Government is committed to making local roads safer especially locations with a history of crashes.

“Elizabeth Ave plays a critical role for local traffic moving north-south in the Kippa-Ring and Clontarf areas,” she says.

“We have listened to the community and this vital safety project will make a major

difference for all road users who travel this section of Elizabeth Ave.” Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg says: “A signalised intersection with signalised pedestrian crossings will ensure traffic, bike rider and pedestrian movements are more controlled, significantly reducing crash risk.

“The Crisafulli Government is pleased to deliver this important project to improve safety for more than 32,000 vehicles utilising this section of Elizabeth Ave daily.”

United front against violence T

he community will come together for the Moreton Bay Says No to Violence walk and speaking event at Redcliffe during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May. The event will be held on May 30 from 8.30am, with participants walking along Redcliffe Pde, continuing along the waterfront and down to Settlement Cove Amphitheatre.

A speaking event will start once everyone is seated and will go for about 40 minutes.

Now in its 17th year, the Moreton Bay Says No To Violence (MBSN2V) walk is a community awareness event that brings people together to stand up, speak out, and walk together against family and domestic violence.

ork has officially started on a multi-million-dollar, luxury over-50s lifestyle development at Rothwell, marking the first step towards building a community in a sought-after location.

The Serenitas project will offer a new era in resort-style living, under the Thyme Lifestyle Resort brand.

Serenitas CEO Von Slater joined dignataries in turning the first sod for civil works at the site on April 15.

Thyme Lifestyle Resort Rothwell will be built in stages at the corner of Anzac Ave and Stubbins St, Rothwell, with the first homes expected to be finished towards the end of 2025.

Von says the first residents should move in before Christmas this year, with the community to grow by five or six homes every month until the project is completed.

“Once complete, the boutiquesized resort will feature a planned 193 homes, all close to essential amenities such as public transport, shopping and healthcare,” Von says.

“This makes it an attractive location for those looking to downsize while enjoying a socially active and, importantly, affordable lifestyle.”

Von says the homes range in size from single-bedroom + study, up to a three-bedroom + study.

“What they all have in common is they are built for downsizing – lock up and leave (for holidays)

– and low maintenance, which is important to our customers and over 50s,” she says.

External and internal finishes are low maintenance and design features consider residents’ desire to ‘age-in-place’.

“You won’t necessarily see it when you walk into the home, it will look like traditional housing,” Von says.

Interest in the development has been strong with the location, plans for the site and no entry/exit fees appealing to customers.

The Thyme Lifestyle Resort Rothwell sales and information centre is now open at the corner of Anzac Ave and Stubbins St, Rothwell.

achie Cossor is bringing a taste of the outback to next month’s Redcliffe Show, with a performance that blends entertainment and horsemanship.

The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre ‘Outback Stockman’ says his cast will include Quarter Horses, a Stock Horse, Smithfield dogs, ducks, a Brahman bull, and his offsider Bill Barrett.

“There’s a bit of comedy through the show, a bit of whip cracking, bit of heritage stuff … it also features a Brahman bull I ride around and play my guitar on,” he says.

“It’s a family show which has been described as orchestrated chaos at times. There will be ducks and dogs … it’s a great little show we do to promote the Hall of Fame.”

Lachie says the animals are a drawcard with audiences and a special way to connect the city and country.

“There’s little things in my show that happen quite quickly that people really enjoy, but I think it’s got to do with just the way the animals act, being so casual, but also being able to put their hand on a Brahman bull is

pretty special.

“I talk about the Brahman breed of cattle. It’s massive in Australia. The Brahman breed of cattle make up 50 per cent of Australia’s whole breed. The Quarter Horse and Stock Horse … we talk about that sort of stuff.”

The 2025 Redcliffe Show is on from June 27, 28 and 29 at Redcliffe Showgrounds – one of many local shows across Australia every year.

E

ight-year-old Dolcie Jarvis’ love of photography is paying off with the youngster already amassing 18 prizes from country shows this year.

Dolcie has followed her father Hadyn into the artform – a natural progression given she’s spent time in his Peninsula professional photographic studio since she was three days old.

“I had her in the studio seven days a week, with me, until she was about two,” Haydn explains.

“It’s all she'd ever really known before she started day care and school.”

Dolcie has been taking photos for about two years, using fullsized cameras, mobile phones and even pretending, using her dad’s vintage cameras.

“I started liking it and have kept going on and on (with it),” she explains.

“I like to take photos of animals the most.”

The Year 3 student says if she could take a photo of anyone, she would choose Mrs Moore her teacher at Mueller College last year.

Haydn enters his and Dolcie’s work in country shows, trying to cover as many as he can each year across Queensland.

At the recent Bell Show, Dolcie was in the under-16s category and won Reserve Champion and other prizes, competing against much older children.

Haydn says he doesn’t do as well as Dolcie in the competitions.

“I’ve won many awards over the years in photography, but I’ve never won a trophy. She got three at once. It’s totally fine,” he says laughing.

They are both hoping to do well at this year’s Redcliffe Show, which is on June 27, 28 and 29.

Dolcie helps Haydn on the job and is often seen by his side at community events and photo shoots for Angelico Jarvis Photography.

It has also been a way for her to explore the natural environment and create photos embracing a theme.

“I’m trying to teach her to look past what she sees and focus on something. It’s more concepts at the moment, but she’s doing better than I am,” he says.

Dolcie says she would like to be a photographer when she grows up.

“I love photography. It’s a lot of fun. You could take a picture of a foot or you could take pictures of tigers and you can also take photos of weddings,” she says.

“Once you retire, no-one wants to know about that part of your life. It’s as though you didn’t have it.”

BallyCara Village General Manager David Schade says the book has been a way to preserve history.

“It’s a lovely thing to produce a book that can hold some

memories for the future - to go back and be able to read whether it was a love story, the war, the depression,” he explains.

“For those who have been able to contribute, it’s stuff they’ve really wanted to get out and tell the world, tell their families, tell the community. They have a lot of pride in telling that story.”

Treasured memories, a real page-turner T

ales of love, war, tragedy, humour and life have been shared by BallyCara residents, who are now published authors, following the release of their book Village Voices Anthology of Memories.

The book, which features the stories of 37 residents, was launched on April 9 and was initially a writers’ club project with about a dozen people working on it.

Facilitator Judy Kenefick says they placed notices in residents’ letterboxes, inviting them to take part and were delighted with the response.

“A lot of people had already written something, so it was a case of extracting something from that. We had a couple of

people who actually sat down with people and took their story – recorded it,” Judy explains.

“I really believe that everyone has a story. No one’s life is ordinary.”

Writers’ club founder Arthur Walters says he has been impressed by the imagination and talent of residents.

“I feel sure, as a result of this, there’ll be other people in the village who will write their own story now,” he says.

Resident Hilary Clarke, who also worked on the book, says the publication has had a positive impact on the BallyCara community.

“A lot of older people feel invisible and so it literally does give people a voice,” Hilary says.

Kindy to celebrate 70 years

LOOKING BACK

ommunity has been at the heart of Margate’s Florence Kindergarten since it opened in 1955 and a large contingent of past, present and future families are expected to attend 70th birthday celebrations on May 24.

A 70th Anniversary Open Day will be held from 9amnoon at the kindergarten, 15 Beaconsfield St, Margate.

There will be games, a sausage sizzle, coffee, baked goods stall, face painting, a raffle and lucky door prize, and a wildlife encounter.

Among those joining the celebrations will be long-time staff members Lynda Coogan and Jennifer Christie, and three generations of the Richters/ Clarke family.

Educator Lynda and Codirector/Teacher Jennifer started working at the kindergarten on the same day 18 years ago.

Lynda says: “I just love the environment, knowing that the families come to us and they really want to be here.

“They’re so willing to help when we have working bees, they have

sub-committees so they all put up their hands to help in some way.

I think it’s just the warmth … it’s a beautiful environment to be in.”

Jennifer agrees adding the kindergarten has a “real community feel”.

“With this open day coming up, we’re expecting to see quite a few familiar faces,” she says.

“We have the saying that we don’t say goodbye, we say see you later. The door is always open to come back and have a chat.”

Lynda and Jennifer love how the kindergarten has evolved during their time there, while continuing to connect with the community and the natural environment.

They also appreciate the support and help they’ve received from families during extreme weather events.

“It’s just been amazing how the parents have given of their time and used their skills over the years to make sure the kindy keeps on going,” Jennifer says.

“Families are so invested, whether they’ve just had one child come through or know they have another one or two coming through,” Lynda adds.

The Redcliffe Herald reported construction started in September 1954 on land donated

by Mr and Mrs Florence who gave “free tenure of the land owned by them at Margate for 15 years on the condition that it is used for the purpose of founding a kindergarten school”.

It was named in their honour and Lady Lavarack officially opened it in January 1955.

A volunteer committee raised money for the building’s construction, with five members

Jenny Richters remembers attending as a pupil in 1972. Her children including Meg Clarke (nee Richters) attended in 1997 and granddaughter Alexandra is now a pupil.

“It’s lovely that she’s here now because it’s a beautiful centre and I’m really proud of her getting the opportunity to experience all of this,” Jenny says.

“It’s the same building that I remember. Just outside has changed.”

Teens target for vital swim lessons

elgravia Leisure is urging families to enrol teens in a learn-to-swim program after recent data from the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia showed high school students’ skills were not up to standard.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia (RLSSA), teachers estimate 84 per cent of 15-16-year-olds are unable to swim 400m and tread water for five minutes, a basic lifesaving requirement and the benchmark for 17-year-olds.

Belgravia's GOswim Teen Program offers a tailored learnto-swim program for students aged 13-17 years.

The course, which meets

national benchmarks for RLSSA, includes water safety and survival skills to reduce incidents in open water environments when teens are with their peers and possibly without supervision.

There are presently almost 800 teenagers across Australia involved in Belgravia's GOswim Teen Program.

“At our Moreton Bay venues, we recognise that teens may feel uncomfortable learning alongside younger children. So, we offer lessons in the shallow end of our 25m pool with peers of a similar age,” Belgravia Leisure Aquatics Specialist Cheryl McLennan says.

“This fosters a supportive

and confidence-building environment, ensuring students progress at their own pace.”

RLSSA Australia CEO Dr Justin Scarr says he is concerned by the data showing poor swimming skills among teenagers.

“Our report on declining children’s swimming skills is a wake-up call. I was shocked to learn that 39 per cent of Year 10 students can’t reach the primary school benchmark – swim 50m and float for two minutes,” he says.

“Poor swimming skills put them at significant risk of missing out on the many benefits that being able to swim affords, making them highly vulnerable to drowning as young adults.

“It’s alarming to see so many children missing out. We risk creating a generation with extremely poor swimming skills.

Cheryl says it is important to engage teens in innovative ways.

“Traditional swimming programs have focused on younger children,” she says.

“With drowning statistics on the rise, now is the time to prioritise swimming education for teens. The GOswim Teen Program is more than just a lesson — it’s a lifesaving opportunity.”

Upgrade to futureproof seawall

W

ork has started to improve a foreshore protection seawall at Redcliffe with another section of the Peninsula foreshore next on the list.

Moreton Bay City Council’s $2.3 million renewal of the seawall at Charlish Park, Redcliffe Pde, started in March and is due to be finished later this year – weather and construction conditions permitting.

The renewal works include: •R eplacing and upgrading about 90m of reinforced concrete seawall • E xtending the sloped rock armour seawall • I mproving the shared pedestrian and cycle path The seawall, originally built more than 70 years ago, is deteriorating from exposure to harsh marine conditions and age.

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) says Redcliffe Peninsula locals are passionate about the natural environment, which is why council runs an “extensive program to ensure its futureproofed”.

“The current Charlish Park

Seawall was built in the 1950s and is reaching its end of life due to the harsh coastal conditions and weather events like exTC Alfred, so it’s time for an upgrade.

“The renewed seawall is designed to provide 100 years of protection to the 90m stretch of Redcliffe foreshore in front of Charlish Park.

“The project will protect this well-used section of foreshore from erosion and mitigate wave overtopping. The cool part is that it can be modified in the future to withstand projected sea-level rises and future severe weather.

“Foreshore goers will also get a brand-new footpath that’s safer and less intrusive on our marine environment.”

Mayor Peter Flannery says one of the city’s major drawcards is its 294km of coastlines and estuaries.

“The maintenance of our shorelines is a key part of our long-term coastal protection program, so residents can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of our city for generations

to come,” Mayor Flannery says.

“We’re currently investing over $2.3 million into the renewal of the Charlish Park Seawall near the iconic Redcliffe Jetty to ensure it stands the test of time.

“We understand that this will cause some inconvenience for residents and visitors who regularly use this area.

eterans, first responders and their supporters will come together for the fifth annual Walking Off The War Within Brisbane event on the Redcliffe Peninsula this month.

The walk will start from Clontarf’s Pelican Park and follow the Redcliffe foreshore to Scarborough and back on May 31. Gates open at 7.30am and the walk starts at 8.30am.

Participants can choose to take on the challenge of walking 20km with a 20kg pack, or they can walk any distance, with or without a pack.

It is free to take part, but there is the option of making a donation when registering for a ticket.

Event Co-ordinator Lee Duke says Walking Off The War Within continues to grow each year, fostering an environment where people can walk, talk, and support one another.

It serves as a powerful reminder that no one has to face their struggles alone.

“Participation has increased by over 25 per cent since the first walk

in 2021 (to more than 350 people last year). However, the biggest growth has been in what we can offer participants,” Lee explains.

“The event started with just a single gazebo and a few tables.

Now, we have a full stage with a live band, an inflatable start line, marquees for shade, seating, fencing, a 40ft shipping container and an incredible group of supporting organisations that work in mental health for veterans and first responders.

“Seeing more people attend means we are reaching more of the community, sparking important conversations around mental health and hopefully making a difference in people’s lives.”

Walking Off The War Within raises money for Trek2Health & SMEAC, two charities that provide crucial support for veterans and first responders. Participants raised $3200 last year.

“Beyond fundraising, Walking Off The War Within creates

a supportive and inclusive environment where people can connect, share their stories and feel a sense of camaraderie,” Lee explains.

“We encourage participants, while on their walk, to take the time to introduce themselves to someone new, start a conversation and share their experiences. Additionally, we invite various mental health and veteran support organisations to attend the event because we understand that while this is a one-day event, mental health support is an ongoing journey.”

Walking Off The War Within is held in memory of Nathan Shanahan, a returned soldier and firefighter, as well as other fallen service men and women who have taken their own lives after battling mental health challenges.

Nathan was a passionate advocate for mental health and PTSD awareness. In December 2016, he lost his battle but before his death, Nathan created Walking Off The War Within, symbolised by the image of a soldier carrying a shadow on his back.

This year walkers, runners and joggers will set off on May 24 from Scarborough Beach Park, Scarborough, raising money, awareness and getting active for their brain health.

icture theatres have been hives of social activity since the first was built by two returned WWI servicemen for the summer of 1918.

Redcliffe Picture Palace on Redcliffe Pde, opposite the jetty was an open-air theatre and the vision of Mr Eckard and Mr Davies.

In 1921, they sold it to Harold Slight (Jack) Beedham and Eleanor Elizabeth Beedham (nee Corscadden) who became local identities.

The original open-air theatre was roofed in 1921-22.

In 1928, Mr and Mrs Beedham built a new Picture Pavilion, two allotments away from the original theatre. They closed the old theatre on October 27, 1928, opening the new Pier Theatre

one week later.

It was used during WWII to host dances and concerts for soldiers stationed in the area.

The theatre narrowly escaped a fire, which destroyed three shops along Redcliffe Pde in June 1941 but was destroyed by another fire in March 1943.

It was rebuilt and reopened in December 1943.

In 1950, the Beedham family sold the theatre to Messrs Kallos and Londy. It was a popular venue for 19 years before closing in 1969 and making way for a retail outlet.

near Jerry Klaassen's horse yard, at 42 Landsborough Ave. Bob had previously used a shed at Woody Point as a ‘public picture theatre’ in 1916.

The new theatre at Scarborough was 90ft x 35ft and seated up to 450 people. It was built by Messrs M Tilley and J.W. Symons and was known as Morgan's Pictures, Scarborough Picture Pavilion or The Picture Hall. It operated for six years but fell into a state of disrepair after Bob died in 1935.

Margate Theatre opened in 1940 at the corner of Ernest and Albert streets and was built by Alex Smith. It was renamed the Renown Theatre in 1942 and was a popular venue for movies, balls and concerts, particularly

during the war years after the old Pier Theatre was destroyed by fire.

It was sold in the mid-1960s and was demolished in the early 1970s to make way for a block of units after being used as a slot car track for several years.

For more than 30 years, it was a social centre which brought the community together.

The Bay Theatre was built at 69-71 Landsborough Ave, Scarborough, in 1954, by Messrs Londy and Kallos. It closed in 1961 and reopened for a short time in May 1969, but closed again in July the same year.

The owner of Pomme Vanille Island Fashion Collection says the event will be held on June 1 from 1-3.30pm at Redcliffe Leagues Club’s Presidents Room, corner Klingner and Ashmole roads.

Guests will enjoy a high tea, with a glass of bubbles or juice on arrival, guest speakers, a fashion show and raffles.

“It’s close to my heart because my sister has it. She’s been fighting it for nearly four years now,” Semone says.

She says more funding is needed for research and patient and family support.

“It’s quite a confusing journey … sometimes you have questions, sometimes there’s a lot of uncertainty so the more support groups you can have for anyone to go and join, the better,” Semone explains.

“We also need more research.

They do new trials all the time … and each person’s journey is different.

I just felt very passionate about helping the cause.

“I suppose, owning a fashion store, I thought how will this look, what will I do … so I thought why not incorporate it with the high tea, with a fashion parade and have a few guest speakers.”

Speakers will include Myeloma Australia CEO Mark Henderson and State Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley.

“I think everybody getting together, it will be a lovely afternoon. We’ve got the guest speakers, which is great because it gives everyone awareness of Myeloma and some insight,” Semone says.

“The fashion parade will be showcasing winter plus summer stock. Local people who already shop with me can have an insight into what’s up and coming.

“I think it will be a beautiful afternoon tea where people can get together, relax, have a bit of time out in the beautiful setting of Redcliffe Leagues. That’s what it’s about.”

She is hoping to raise as much as she can for the organisation as well as awareness.

“It’s more about getting out there, making people aware, and we’ll grow for the next event,” Semone explains.

She is looking for more raffle prize donations.

Jamming to the beat Kylie Knight

W

ith the sea breeze in his hair and a smile on his face, Ky Lovell shares his love of music with the community every Thursday during the Redcliffe Peninsula Drum Circle and Jammalong at the Suttons Beach Rotunda.

He started the free sessions in March 2023 in a bid to bring people of all abilities together, while fostering a passion for music and creativity.

The Redcliffe Peninsula Drum Circle and Jammalong is held from 10.30-11.30am with 20-30 people attending each week.

Ky supplies the instruments and his high-energy vibe and love of music. Participants can bring their own instruments if they wish.

Ky’s mother Tee, who supports him in the venture along with Danielle Hannah, says Ky chooses the music and leads the sessions.

“Really, it’s a jamming space where people can get together and play music together. You’re essentially jamming along to the playlist,” she explains.

“Everyone feels very welcome.

It’s an inclusive space for everyone. People might be walking past and join in as well.

“The way Danielle explains it … she describes it as like a therapy session. You’re right by the sea, which is beautiful, and music is like another language … people who may not have any verbal (communication) at all, it’s a way that everyone’s communicating with each other and connecting.”

Ky’s infectious energy and love for music make every session engaging, dynamic, and inclusive.

“Whether you're a seasoned musician or have never played an instrument before, everyone is welcome.

Bring your own drum or percussion instrument or use one of our spares,” Tee says.

“Drumming is known to boost mood, reduce stress, improve focus, and bring people together in a shared creative experience.

At Jammalong, there’s no pressure, no performance – just pure joy, rhythm, and connection.

“For Ky, music is his life. It’s everything. He has perfect pitch and that’s the way he communicates with the world.

“He is an inclusivity consultant and he has been for Big Sound for the past couple of years.

He’s been involved with other festivals as well.

“He wants this to be something that he grows into jamming spaces at festivals and stuff like that … an inclusive space where people can just hang out, grab some instruments and jam together.”

Tee is proud of the way Ky leads the sessions, bringing the community together and breaking down barriers for people with a disability.

“This is changing the perception of people with disability in the community. People with disability are constantly led by others and they’re going to services.

It’s putting the power back into the hands of people with lived experience.”

Green vegetables are the ultimate ‘fast food’. They cook fast, grow fast and will be devoured pretty quickly too when you experience their vibrant, fresh, homegrown flavours.

T

he cooler temperatures are perfect for all of these stir fry favourites with most growing just as well in a container as they do in a garden plot.

Pak Choy (aka bok choy) and Tatsoi – These Chinese staples have edible leaves and flowers with the outer leaves ready to pick around four weeks after planting. Pick the outer leaves as you need while the inner leaves continue to grow. Delicious in soups and steamed too!

Shallots (Spring Onions/ Scallions) – Harvest the green tops and the white bases will continue to grow sending up new green growth. An essential ingredient in a stir fry for their onion flavour, you can use them raw, cooked and even fried.

Spinach – there are several varieties available including native ‘Warrigal Greens’, so plant a mix to enjoy the different flavours and leaf textures. Rich in iron, they’re fast growing with pick as you need leaves.

Silverbeet (Chard) – often referred to as ‘spinach’ these big-leafed beauties have a stronger flavour than spinach and feature edible leaves and stems. Another cut and come again plant, take the outer leaves, cutting from near the base to allow the younger leaves to develop.

Chinese Cabbage – these will grow most of the year and take literally a minute to cook.

Repeat plant every two months for a continuous supply. You can eat the entire crinkly leaf, finely sliced is best for stir fry.

Asian herbs – for punchy flavour additions, Coriander, Thai Basil and Vietnamese Mint will give you that hint of the Orient. While basil and mint are tropical and will grow well into the warmer months, coriander is short lived preferring autumn and spring, so plant and use regularly or allow it to self-seed for a succession of plants.

TOP TIPS • Full sun – plants need about six hours of direct sunlight a day • Good quality, free draining soil in pots or garden beds • Pick regularly to keep plants growing and to avoid tough, bitter old growth • Always wash your harvest before you eat/cook it • Fresh is best, pick as you need, just before you need it Beans – generally a summer veggie, they will grow here if the temps are mild in the cooler months. Kids will love the ‘squeak’ when they bite into a freshly wok cooked bean!

Snow Peas – harvest when they are young and don’t forget to pick some of the sweet, tender shoots too as a garnish or added to the stir fry. Plants need a solid trellis for climbing.

Cook the pods whole, thinly sliced or enjoy raw.

• Kaffir Lime, use the leaves finely sliced for a burst of tropical lime flavour • Lemongrass, plant in a large pot to manage its growth • Chilli, grows well in the warmer months – pick a variety that’s right for your taste buds

FISHING TIPS with

T

here is a great mix of fishing opportunities this time of year and fingers crossed for some good weather windows.

The inshore waters will still have some effects from the prolonged wet weather, but this is not a bad thing. Unless we get some more heavy rain, the water will start to clear up this month.

Estuary and land based

This is a good time of year to be targeting tailor inshore and land based along the foreshore. Fish will be caught from Redcliffe and Woody Point jetties, but I prefer the foreshore anywhere from Scarborough to Shorncliffe on the larger high tides at night for better-sized fish.

Tailor will get more prevalent as the weather continues to cool off, but the early part of the season often sees the bigger fish caught locally. My preferred bait and rig are a small pilchard on a set of 3 x 3/0 ganged hooks. Sinker size will vary from unweighted up to about a four-ball sinker depending on where you are fishing and the conditions.

Remember the legal size for tailor in Queensland is 35cm.

period closer to surf bars and you will find them in the Pine and Caboolture Rivers, Hays Inlet and along the foreshores. Hays Inlet and the fishing platform have consistently produced fish on live herring. You should expect an occasional flounder and bar tailed flathead mixed in with the dusky flathead. For those targeting flathead with lures, you are likely to pick up a trevally as well.

Land based fishing for yellowfin bream can be a great way to get the kids hooked on fishing.

Around the mouth of the Pine River and the fishing platforms on the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge will be a favoured location to target them, but they can found along most of the foreshore around high tide.

School mackerel have been caught at Woody Point and Shorncliffe Jetties and one lucky young fisherman nailed 1m+ cobia on a live bait at Shorncliffe Pier last month.

More and more cobia are being caught in the western side of Moreton Bay.

Inshore reefs

Expect squire and a few grass sweetlip on the reefs for those that fish light and focus on dawn, dusk and at night. Mixed

in with squire will be tailor and the occasional school mackerel if you are floating around pilchards. There will still be a few quality barred grunter around following the rain.

Beach fishing

Although the beaches got quite the working over during the last month or so, the late autumn conditions will start to see some good formations form. It can be a great month for fishing the surf beach at Moreton Island, particularly for swallowtail dart but bream and tarwhine will also be caught. Swallowtail dart can be prolific during the day and look for some deeper gutters with plenty of white water over them. The stretch of beach around the “gun emplacements”

south to Long Point on Moreton Island is always a favoured stretch of beach for them, but they can turn up anywhere.

Yabbies are the number one bait, although eugaries, beach worms or peeled prawns will produce some fish as well. A few tailor will be around the northern beaches of Moreton Island at dawn and dusk and into the early evening.

Offshore

There should be some good weather windows for offshore fishing this month. Snapper, pearl perch, teraglin and Venus tusk fish will be the main species caught. Very good catches of snapper including some really big fish were caught in both shallow and deep grounds last month and that should continue.

Crabbing and prawning This is not a great month for mud crabbing and, if you are after a feed of crabs, it is best to target blue swimmer crabs. Both Bramble and Deception Bays yield good quality blue swimmer crabs this time of year. Remember to make sure your pots are properly marked.

For the cast netters, the banana prawns have been widespread after the rains and that should continue this month. Look for the concentrations of boats and that will where they will be.

Bramble Bay and Deception Bay offshore of the mouth of the Caboolture River will be typical locations for them.

Historic win for golden duo Nick Crockford

A

gatha McGoon and Millicent Hunter have ended a 35year wait for Redcliffe Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).

The 12-year-olds beat severe weather, tough beach conditions, jellyfish and 13 teams to win gold at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

And as the Under 13/Under 14 mixed two-person Rescue and Resuscitation (R&R) medals were presented, Redcliffe SLSC finally had its first national champions.

Millicent and Agatha have competed together for three years – winning the State U11/ U12 two-person title in 2023 – so entered the titles with a degree of confidence.

But, starting the final round, against teams from Queensland, Victoria, NSW, Western Australia and South Australia, they were

outside the medal places.

Thankfully, they fixed earlier “mistakes” and battled through bluebottle stings in the final to win.

“When they announced the results going into the final, we were coming fourth,” says Millicent, who is continuing a family tradition in R&R. Agatha added: “We just focused on the things where we made mistakes in the first round and fixed them in the final. We cried when we realised that we’d won”.

Millicent smiled and added: “It was kind of a surprise … and relief”.

Redcliffe SLSC’s Junior Activities Co-ordinator Rob van Driel says the “achievement is sure to inspire young Reddy lifesavers for years to come”.

"For Agatha and Millicent to win our club's first national championship is a momentous

achievement in itself,” he says.

“What makes their gold medals mean so much more is the focus, courage and determination these young lifesavers showed to overcome the extreme conditions, which is testament to their training, coaches and supporters.”

The duo is now aiming to travel interstate for competitions next season.

Following the national title win, Millicent has been appointed one of Redcliffe’s Nipper Captains for the next season and Agatha has been named Junior Athlete of the Year.

R&R is based on a simulated rescue and resuscitation of a patient from the surf using the traditional belt and reel.

It combines swimming, resuscitation skills, marching and drill, with teams judged against set criteria and deducted points for errors.

Millicent is the third generation of her family to be involved in R&R. Mum Jess and her sister Fran won U16 five-Person R&R silver medals at the 1999 Australian Championships, also on the Gold Coast.

Jess was also in the U18 team which won bronze in 2000.

They were coached by their father Greg Murphy (Millicent’s grandfather) who is a Foundation Life Member of Redcliffe Peninsula SLSC. The club thanked Redcliffe Woodcraft Society for repairing reels Redcliffe surf life savers use and Redcliffe Community Men’s Shed for varnishing them.

Both reels have been used during the season by Redcliffe SLSC’s U13-U15 five-person team, which included Agatha, Millicent, Zac Keating, Alyssa Sweeney and Summer Moffat.

Double win for sisters at championships S isters Mara and Amelie Hoefel made it a golden double for Redcliffe at the Water Polo Queensland State Championships.

The Redcliffe State High School students helped their Mermaids teams step onto the top of the medal podium.

Mara's team, Mermaids 14 Pink, won the gold medal match in the U14 Maroon division beating All

Hallows 7-5. That victory also ensured Mermaids went through the tournament undefeated at Gold Coast Aquatic Centre from April 5-13.

Amelie's team, Mermaids 18 Pink, won gold in the U18 Maroon division, clinching the title with a 14-9 victory over UQWPC Barras.

It also led to Amelie being named in the All Star 7

Chance to join Pink Snapdragons’ crew Nick Crockford

D

el Martin has helped keep Redcliffe Pink Snapdragons alive, grow and win state medals, and now she hopes others will “give it a go”.

It was almost 20 years ago, when Del first took her place as a dragon boat sweep after being diagnosed with breast cancer 11 months earlier.

Back in 2005, Del saw it as a way to reclaim strength and spirit – but dragon boating became a life’s passion, which she wants to share.

Del and the “Snappies” are hosting a free come-andtry session on Saturday, May 10 for anyone “touched by breast cancer – survivors and supporters”.

The event will start at 9am for 9.30am on the water. All equipment will be provided and morning tea served at the group’s clubhouse at Talobilla Park, Kippa-Ring.

It is part of the Snappies’ aim to “empower anyone touched by breast cancer” to join them for “camaraderie, support, lifetime friendship and active recovery and fitness”.

Del says: “You just have to give it a go. You might find yourself addicted too.

“Dragon boating taught me the future is not predetermined.

There’s so much support and encouragement to live life to the full. I’m not the same person I was before.”

Del’s dedication has inspired many and her commitment is breathing new life into a club which was on the brink of closure.

In 2022, with dwindling numbers and many members in their 80s, the future of the Pink Snapdragons looked uncertain.

But Del-led come-and-try events, boosted numbers and revived the club’s competitive spirit. By 2024, there was a new committee and a drive to fulfill Del’s dream - a Pinkies team from Redcliffe Dragons Club.

That dream took off in September when six breast cancer survivor (BCS) paddlers joined others from local clubs at the Pumicestone Festival and won a bronze medal.

At this year’s Queensland State Championships, the team - many racing for the very first time – took bronze in both 200m and 500m events.

“These wonderful ladies are the reason I’m still a member of this club,” Del says. “I am so proud of their achievements.”

Redcliffe Reds, from Pink Snapdragon’s sister club, help with coaching and fitness training, particularly Iciar Argus and Vince De Gregorio.

Redcliffe Red Dragons, with some Snappies, went to Penrith for the Australian Championships recently.

Hopes were high after the DBQ State Championships where Reds won silver and bronze in Senior C Mixed 10s and Senior B Women 10s and bronze in Senior A Open 10s.

Blake's dreaming big on world stage R

edcliffe softballer Blake Turner has made a triumphant start to his international career.

The catcher was part of the Australian Junior Steelers Under 18 team which beat New Zealand 4-1 in its recent fivematch Test series.

Playing at Palmerston North, Australia swept ahead, comfortably winning the first two matches by double digit scores (14-6 and 13-6).

“The first game was nervewracking,” Blake, 18, says, “it was a big step-up representing Australia for the first time.

“But we started with a couple of big wins and I was proud of what I did.”

Blake started playing softball at the age of six and has been at Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association for the past five years.

His call-up for the green and gold followed the under 18 national championships in

January and a 30-player camp last year.

However, from being one of the older members of the Australian under 18 team, Blake has to start again in his quest for the Under 23s.

He has to earn a place in the Queensland team and then hopefully catch the eye of national selectors.

“Dream big,” Blake said, “that’s what I try to do.”

he Dolphins know they can beat the NRL’s powerhouse teams, when they’re at their best, and will be looking to strengthen their defence, show flair in attack and reduce errors to keep their season moving in the right direction.

Their start to the 2025 season has been a mixed bag, with three wins in the first eight rounds, but convincing first-ever wins over last year’s Grand Finalists – Panthers and Storm – are cause for optimism.

As The Redcliffe Peninsula went to print, the Dolphins were coming off a 40-28 loss against the Canberra Raiders (round 8) and were preparing to meet the Roosters in Magic Round.

The Dolphins’ 42-22 win over the Melbourne Storm (round 7) was among the best in their history and the product of how the squad responded to pressure after a slow start to the season, holding their nerve and sticking to processes they believed would pay off.

It was a remarkable win, considering the Storm were 16-2 in front after 20 minutes When asked how the win, the

first over Melbourne, rated in the club’s history, Head Coach Woolf was unsure.

“I haven’t thought about that.

It’s a big win for us. They’re a hard team to beat all the time and we’ve found them hard to beat. To get the win’s great for us. To win the way we did is even better. As a team, we need to believe in ourselves. We’ve got a good footy team,” he said.

The Dolphins had weathered criticism after losing their first four games, but Captain Tom Gilbert said it didn’t take three wins in a row to make him believe they could do it.

“I probably felt it months ago.

There was a lot of changes … new coaching staff, a couple of great players coming to our club made a difference and we slowly evolved as a team. I just felt a couple of months ago we were going in the right direction,” he said.

“I reckon it (the win over Melbourne) comes from that belief, it comes from the hard work we’ve put in and it’s come from the heavy criticism we took in the early rounds … we did something well with it. We took it on the chin and we kept ourselves grounded and we believed in ourselves.”

Woolf agreed saying he knew the work they had put in during the preseason and in the first few rounds would pay off at some stage.

“It didn’t early but I believe in the players we’ve got here and I believe in the work we’ve done,” he said.

Ray Stone, who scored two tries and was tireless in defence, says he feels combinations clicked in the win over the Storm.

“In terms of our training and attitude and stuff … it feels like it’s been the same … we’ve pushed pretty hard all preseason and even those first couple of weeks we were pushing hard but

we didn’t quite get the result,” Stone said.

“Now, it’s just sort of clicked and combinations are working a lot better.”

Following the Dolphins’ loss to the Raiders in round eight, in which they surrendered a 28-10 half-time lead, Woolf said while plenty of players “busted their guts” to do everything they could, too many errors in their own half of the field proved costly and they didn’t get their fifth play “quite right” in the second half.

Gilbert says the team appeared to be focused on protecting their lead after the break, to their peril.
