Friendly Squares to dance at Canfield Fair The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 from 7-8 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Mahoning Valley ABWA to host founders day event Pirates in the library The Mahoning Valley Network Council of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is hosting a founders day event on Sept. 22. This women’s organization was founded 70 years ago to help women be empowered in the workplace. Jane Turzillo, author of “Wicked Women of Northeastern Ohio” will be the day’s speaker. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the meal will be served at 1 p.m. The menu includes roast pork, stuffed chicken breasts, stuffed shells, mashed potatoes, green beans, tossed salad and cherries in the snow for dessert. Poland Sunrise yard sale raises funds for Alzheimer’s Network By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com
Poland Sunrise Senior Living hosted a yard sale on July 25 benefitting the Alzheimer’s Network. Kitty Leonelli, the buildings activities coordinator, said that this is the first year after a long time that the center hosted the yard sale. “We have not had one for a long time,” Leonelli said. “So we wanted to get it started again.”
According to Network Director Dorothy Barto, the group set up a number of tables full of items from their previous sale at Western Reserve United Methodist. “We are a non-profit and run mostly on volunteers,” Barto said. “So we have the yard sale every year to help.” Leonelli said that community members were able to set up a table for a flat rate of $20, which benefitted the network. “We work a lot with them and
they have support groups at our facility,” she said. Barto said raising any amount of money for the organization is important because they provided a needed service throughout Mahoning County. “We help families navigate medicaid, complicated legal issues, provide support for them and give them any information they may need,” Barto said. “No one is every expecting it.” Board member Sandra Pope said that the group works en-
tirely with volunteers, with only one paid employee. “We provide a newsletter and pay speakers and resources that are not free,” Pope said. “Any funding is helpful to the organization.” The group hosts the support group at Poland Sunrise on the first and third Saturdays of the month. To attend the group, community members can register by calling Poland Sunrise at 330707-1313.

Eagle Scout project used to create Stations of the Cross A current Boy Scout from Poland built 14 outdoor Stations of the Cross for the parish and school at Holy Family Church over the course of a few weekends for his Eagle Scout project. David Vuksanovich, a 15-yearold sophomore at Poland Seminary High School and a life-long Scout in Troop 9002, began the process for creating the stations in January after meeting with Monsignor Connell. Vuksanovich is an alumnus of Holy Family School and is active in the church and youth ministry. When deciding on an Eagle Scout project, he wanted to do something for his church and school community. Vuksanovich and volunteers from Troop 9002 started by assembling and staining the stations on June 1. They met again on June 8 to dig the holes and concrete the 14 posts into place behind the Emmaus House at the corner of the Holy Family property. Several additional days were needed to adhere the color plaques to the wooden boxes. Weather was the biggest cause for the project taking longer than expected. The stations will give the par-

Mauthe Bridge renovation

It was built in 1956 by donated materials from then president of Youngstown Sheet and Tube’s president, Pete J. Mauthe. The Poland Forest Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to raise $86,000 to complete the project. The bids for the bridge have gone out and are due back on Aug. 21, with the hopes the bridge will be open later this fall.

The Poland library hosted an educational event detailing how to research records of fallen soldiers on July 25. Genealogy and local history librarian Tim Seman hosted the event. “This information gives context to the lives of family members who have served in the arms forces,” Seman said. He explained there are two main avenues for this research, personal records and unit history. Identifying which records are available and how to gain access to that information is key to understanding family history. “It’s a unique topic because m i l ita r y ex per ience is so unique,” Seman said. He focused in resources found on the library website’s genealogy page, which Seman put together and updates himself. Seman said he has a passion for genealog y work, having done an extensive amount of research into his own family tree. “These are people who you may never have had the chance to meet, or may have only known brief ly,” Seman said. “Genealogy allows you to get to

The Mill Creek MetroParks hosted the Explorers Kitchen Chemist Camp for children ages 7-9. Brenda Markley, a naturalist with the Metro Parks, hosted the camps from July 15-19. “Ou r goa l f rom Monday through Friday was to discover where the different parts of our pizza come from,” Markley said. She said that each day children explored a different area of food, from wheats and grains, veggies, fruit and dairy. During the week children toured the Metro Park Farms and met the animals and saw the plants. Children also toured different parts of the park, according to Markley, and learned about the history. “We learned how popcorn popped, we got to see all the
animals, they even made homemade cheese,” Markley said. She said that each day the camp kicked off with a craft done by the students. They painted ornaments of farm animals, created pizza themed sand art, and colored pictures. Ma rk le y s a id t h at t he y also read a number of books throughout the week that fit with the theme. Children were also given a notebook to answer questions in and draw in that they got to take home at the end of the week. “We really want to teach them at a young age to appreciate the food they have and to understand where it comes from,” Markley said. The Poland Junior Women’s Club hosted their annual summer concert series. The group hosts concerts at the gazebo in front of Poland Town Hall throughout the summer. Bands range in music type, but are all local to the Youngstown area. The group starts hosting shows in June, and the concerts run through the first week of August. See CONCERT, Page 10

Mushroom guru - Walt Sturgeon Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Historical society to host day trip The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Café, followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. During the week of June 17, Holy Family Youth Ministry attended a Mission Trip centered in Milford. Participants totaling 60 from all across the Diocese of Youngstown gathered to perform service work in the Cincinnati and Kentucky areas. Volunteer work took place at Old St. Mary’s Church, Matthew 25 Donation Center, various women and men’s shelters and soup kitchens. Mike Puhalla volunteered to be their driver and chaperone for the trip. This trip would not have been possible without the support of this volunteer and others. On July 12, Jack Leicht earned the title of World Champion in traditional sparring, winning a gold medal at American Taekwondo Association’s (ATA) Tournament of Champions in Little Rock, Ark. Leicht qualified for the championship competition by finishing the 2018-19 tournament season ranked sixth in the United States in ATA’s second and third degree black belt boys age 11-12 Division. The competition included a field of 18 boys, qualified from countries in North and South America.
