Green Team visits the Poland library By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Green Team visited the Poland library on July 16. Peggy Flynn with the Green Team, visited the library dressed as Mother Earth to teach children about the importance of taking care of the environment. “The greatest thing you can do is love the earth,” Flynn said. She started out the event by reading “Dear Children of the Earth” to the children gathered at the event. “The book really goes over how we are all living on the earth, but that the earth is also a living thing,” Flynn said. After reading the book, Flynn answered questions by children gathered about the different things they can do to help the environment. Flynn then showed children how to decorate door hangers provided by the Green Team to look like the earth. “The older kids like to try to make the shapes of the continents,” Flynn said. “But the younger children can just draw the blue and green.” After decorating the door hangers, children were able to take them home. “The Green Team visits the library event single year,” said librarian Karen Steed. Steed said that the team comes up with a different program every year, which includes a new book and craft. “We also have a lot of books

MCCTC hosts ground breaking ceremony for new fire tower training facility By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted a ground breaking ceremony for a new fire tower training facility on the campus on July 9. School superintendent John Zehentbauer hosted the ceremony, which brought together local politicians, fire department s a nd MCCTC boa rd members. “I want to thank everyone that was involved in this project from its inception to the ground breaking,” Zehentbau-

er said. The project, which will cost approximately $1.1 million, is set to be completed by January 2020. Zehentbauer said that the goal of the facility is to provide a state of the art training area for everyone from local high school students to professional firefighters. The school current ly offers fire courses for both high school students and adults, and Zehentbauer said the facility will also offer free high school level training for local schools. “It is important that our local

firemen will have a safe, state of the art facility to train in that is close by,” Zehentbauer said. Austintown Fire Chief Andrew Frost said that the facility will help local departments keep up on their training without having to travel. “If someone wants to do a big training session in their department they can actually come out and use this facility, there was nowhere they could have gone and done that before,” Frost said. He said that with shifting state laws it has become harder for departments to find facili-

ties they can use to train for dangerous situations. “We are going to be able to have these firefighters in these dangerous situations in a controlled setting, as opposed to in the field for the first time,” Frost said. He also said he sees this facility as a way to engage the younger generation, in the hopes of recruiting younger members into the profession. “We are making a big push right now to get this young kids back involved in this,” Frost said. “When you bring in technology and you bring in state

of the art facilities you peak their interest, they don’t want the old stuff they want the new stuff.” The project is funded by both state and federal money, with the school having about $565,000 already raised. Zehentbauer said he expects MCCTC to match the grant money by 50 percent, but will offer $400,000 minimum. He said that the new facility is just the first step in a potential long term project to increase training at MCCTC for all fire and police departments as well as first responders.

Ulster Project connects American and Irish students By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Mahoning Valley Ulster Project connects local teenagers with students from Northern Ireland. Greg Hartz, who helps organize the project, said that the goal of the group is to break down stereotypes about religion. “We want to show everyone that we are all more alike than we are different,” Hartz said. Students from Ireland come to the United States for a month, staying with American families. This year, 10 students visited from Ireland, five boys and five girls.

Hartz said that the groups tries to select half Catholic and half Protestant students to help break the religious barriers. “It’s not as bad as it once was,” said Irish student Dan Gilmore who participated in the program this year. “But there is definitely an undercurrent of tension.” During the month, Ulster Project students spend their days participating in a number of service projects. Students visited the Inn and Poland Way, volunteered at soup kitchens, spent time at the Purple Cat along with a number of other projects. “They develop leadership skills,” Hartz said. “I think it

helps everyone to be able to go forward and continue to do the right thing.” Along with service work students spend time together going camping and making day trips with their host families. “For a lot of these students it is the first time they are away from home,” Hartz said. “We really try to keep them busy so they feel less home sick.” Gilmore said that he visited Niagara Falls with his host family, as well as the drive in movie theatre and the Jewish heritage museum. “We all get along really well,” Gilmore said. “All of the people I have met have been really

lovely.” Hartz said that the group also worships at a different church every Sunday. Students visited St. Roses Catholic Church, a Jewish Temple and a Mosque. American students participating in the group come from across the Mahoning Valley. Hartz said that students come from Canfield, Boardman, South Range, Jackson Milton and Ursuline high schools and that the group has been operating in Mahoning Valley for 32 years. “We want to keep the program going for as long as possible, but it is not without its challenges,” Hartz said.

He explained that this year the group struggled to find American homes to place Irish students in. The last Irish student was placed the day before the students arrived in America. “We hope we can get more volunteers,” Hartz said. “We know it is a big commitment but it’s only a month and it’s an experience that is unique.” Anyone interested in participating in the program in 2020 can contact Hartz at 330-7701440. Mill Creek Park hosts dragonfly hunt By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

The Mill Creek Metro Park hosted a Dragonfly Hunt event out of the Ford Nature Center the first week of July. Children were able to walk through the center, locating the 20 photos of the insect hidden within the complex. Along with the photos were facts about them, with the goal of being both fun and educational. If children were able to locate all 20 pictures they were able to get a small prize, including pencils or pieces of candy. After the hunt, the park encouraged families to take a hike outside, searching for real dragonflies. The Ford Nature Center will host the next scavenger hunt starting on Aug. 6, posting photos of butterflies throughout the complex. For more information on the event or other upcoming park events, go to www.millcreekmetroparks.org. Neighbors | Jessica Harker

Canfield library hosts craft night By ABBY SLANKER aslanker@neighbors.com

The Canfield library invited adults and teens to create their own rainbow wall hanging on June 24. With the help of Adult Libra r ia n Assista nt Taylor Swan, participants created a stylish art piece for their home. Swan precut several red, blue, green, yellow and orange pieces of yarn for the wall hangings, but said participants were free to create their wall hanging any way they liked. “I did precut pieces of yarn in the usual rainbow colors, but participants are welcome to cut any color and any amount of

pieces they would like to create their wall hanging. The can put their own spin and own touch on it and do whatever they like. We have a lot of creative people here,” Swan said. Swan said she tries to mix up the craft programs each month. “I t r y to m i x it up each month. This month I wanted to do something colorful that said spring into summer. Last month, we did tassel bookmarks and in July, we are going to hand embroider electronic pouches for phones or tablets. It’s a fun time and I am excited for the rest of the programs this summer,” Swan said.
