Holy Family School has fun while helping By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Holy Family School celebrated Catholic Schools Week on the week of Jan. 29 until Feb. 2 and Students Appreciation Day on Feb. 2. The school participated in fun activities for the students on Friday, and they also had service projects through the week. The Home and School Association organized the programs for the school. “We want to focus on teamwork, Christian service and fun,“ principal Kathy Stoops said of the week. Throughout the week, the students made blankets that will be donated to the Beatitude House in Youngstown. They also had a “Soup-er Bowl“ canned good drive where students brought in canned food to be donated to local food pantries. The school had a cake competition during the week at every grade level. The students began with traditional box cakes and decorated the cakes. They announced the winners of the best cake design at the end of the week. Winning designs included a “Titanic” themed cake, a cake made to look like a porcupine and one designed to look like a hamburger. The school had a cake walk at the end of the week to give the cakes away. Students participated in two service projects at the end of the week. Hair stylists Carmelina Iamurri of X-Static About Hair and Rosalie Crawford of Luci and Company Hair Studio cut eight inches of hair off from students Audrina Jablonski and Giuliana Ricchiuti, which they donated to Children with Hair Loss, a nonprofit that makes wigs for children dealing with hair loss. Another student, Hannah LaPlante had gotten her hair cut for donation prior to the school day. “I want to help people that are sick,“ said Jablonski. She also said she was excited to help less fortunate children. The families of the students stood by in the lobby of the school and cheered as the women cut

the children’s hair. The stylists tied the girls’ hair into ponytails and cut each off individually. They allowed the girls’ mothers and brothers to cut off a section as well. The school ended Friday’s school day with a fun “Kornhole for Kids“ event in their gymnasium. The school had the students of each grade gather in a series of lines to compete in a beanbag toss game. Each line had three to four students who took turns throwing four beanbags on a cornhole board. The

students had three minutes to throw each beanbag into the hole on the board, grab the beanbags and hand them to the next student in line. The grades all competed against each other for a high score. The staff only counted the beanbags that went in as a point. The students scored 661 total points with all the grades included. The Home and School Association said they would donate twice as much as they score in money, with a maximum of $1,000. The organization gave

their maximum amount to Akron Children’s Hospital. Friday also marked the school’s Student Appreciation Day. The school took some students on a trip to Train Station Fitness in Boardman while other students had presentations by OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. The school also permitted the students to wear casual clothing instead of their uniforms as a show of appreciation for donating canned goods.

Children work on art skills at library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Poland library invited an artist to their meeting room to lead a painting program for young children on Jan. 22. Jan Luoma, an artist and former PLYMC librarian, ran the library’s “Winter Painting Party for Grades K-4.“ She had the children make a dolphin painting. Poland librarian Amanda Koller assisted Luoma during the program. The library provided everything the children needed, including paint, a canvas and clean up materials. They also set out a bag of chips and a drink for the children. The children began with blue paint and a large brush to cover the canvas. Once they had the canvas covered, they walked over to the drying station where Luoma, Koller or a parent used a blow dryer to dry the paint. Then, they used a dolphin stencil to trace the outline of the animal on their canvas. After they outlined the dolphin, they painted it and finished their painting. Some children added extra designs and decoration to the art, similar to the decoration that Luoma had on her display painting. They went over to the drying station again and then took their finished product home. Luoma does a series of painting programs throughout the year. She said she will do one

Children hop into the world of Peter Rabbit at the library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

An event based on Beatrix Potter’s “The Tale of Peter Rabbit“ occurred at the Poland library on Jan. 25. Jennifer Kuczeck organized the “Show Me the Bunny“ event to coincide with the release of the children’s film “Peter Rabbit“ on Feb. 9. She gave the children at the program many activities to do during the event. “Any time you can make an association with literature, it’s good,“ said Kuczeck. She wanted to introduce the story to the children and give them some entertainment. She began with a reading of Potter’s famous story. After the story, the children went around to different stations based on the story. Some of the stations had crafts for the children to do. One of the areas had a coloring sheet depicting a picture from the book. Another craft included pipe cleaners, pink cotton balls and craft sticks. The children glued the three together to make a bunny nose and whiskers. The children played games as well. Kuczeck set up a pin the tail on the rabbit station in the corner of the room. One table had a magnetic board where children placed magnets in one of two columns, found in the garden and not found in the garden. The magnets included a tomato, peas, balloons and a vacuum. They had another activity where the attendees could

She had another table dedicated to Potter’s life and other works. The children and parents could use a library tablet to scroll through a webpage detailing Potter’s life. Kuczeck does special events similar to this one throughout the PLYMC. She had a Nutcracker event in December and will have a “Wizard of Oz” event in February at different branches of the PLYMC.

ScoreVision installed the Reese Family Scorebards in Cardinal Mooney High School’s gymnasium. The school will use the boards to keep score and play videos and advertisements during basketball and volleyball games as well as being in use during pep rallies, assemblies and speaker visits.

Mooney gets new scoreboard technology By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

C a r d i n a l Mo one y H i g h School debuted the new Reese Family Scoreboards technology in their gymnasium at an open house on Jan. 9 and 10 as well as at the boys’ basketball game against Warren JFK on Jan. 9. ScoreVision provided the two jumbotrons, which have been installed on both sides of the court. The new scoreboards will allow their students to learn to work with new digital technologies and will give local businesses and donors a platform to advertise. “On behalf of all of Cardinal Mooney, I would like to saw that we are thankful for all the businesses and donors who have made this upgrade possible,“ said Mark Oles, president of the school. Oles said the scoreboards will not only provide advertisement for businesses and name recognition for donors, but they will also use the jumbotrons for any events in the gymnasium including basketball, volleyball, assemblies and guest speakers. The board have the dimensions of 14 by 9 feet and has an all LED surface, which makes the screen more durable. If something hits the screen, it may take out only a panel, as opposed to the full screen. The screens use Apple technology to broadcast and has a

Cloud based storage system. Any content from the internet can be broadcasted onto the screen. Amelia McCumbers of ScoreVision said that the students could play movies on the screens for a movie night or a live broadcast. Anything that they can access on their connected iPad can be played on the jumbtrons using AirPlay technology. Students in the Advanced Computer Applications and Creative Entrepreneurship classes will design content to be played during games on the Reese Family Scoreboards. They will create hype videos to play during pregame and pep rallies to get their students excited for the games. The boards also give the students a chance to make advertisements and commercials to play before games, half time and during time outs. ScoreVision has operated for two and half years and has brought video scoreboards to schools throughout the country. Their main focus is on high schools, but they have provided jumbotrons for colleges such as Oakland University. Their new boards at Cardinal Mooney marks the third school they have worked with in Ohio. If donors or businesses are interested in promoting on the scoreboards, they can contact the school at 330-788-5113 or visit their support webpage at http://www.support.cardinalmooney.com.
