description, product pricing/ cost, target audience, need met by product, competitive advantage/competitors and a sketch of their product. The students also had a prototype of their product to show the judges. Each student was responsible for a part of the presentation and demonstration of their product. Each group also had a tagline to close their presentation. The students pitched such products as the Pocket Foot Warmer, Travelpac, Open Faced Water Bottle, E-Z Pack, Easy Strainer, Carry Ferry and Strawberry Dips. The Pocket Foot Warmer was designed to be put in boots to help keep feet warm, while the Travelpac was pitched as

an easy way to carry water in a backpack while hiking or running a marathon. The Open Faced Water Bottle was designed as a no-spill container with a straw and the E-Z Pack was a small suitcase with dividers to help keep people organized when packing for a trip. The E-Z Strainer was a small pot with a built in strainer to help chefs and the Carry Ferry was a product created to help carry grocery bags and eliminate several trips to the car. The Strawberry Dips was created to help make it easier for people to make chocolate covered strawberries. W hen t he presentat ions were complete, the judges were asked to choose an overall best product winner and and overall best presentation winner. The judges convened in the hallway and returned to the classroom

to announce the winners. The judges declared the E-Z Strainer as the best product, which was presented by Anthony Longo, Alyssa Cross and Lauren Slanker. The judges then bestowed the best presentation award on the group of Julia Petrallo, Vince Augustinelli and Ashley Kaleel for their Strawberry Dips product. Michele Merkel, president of Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, was also on hand to observe the students present their product pitches. “Young people have good ideas. That’s the first step in creating a product. That idea can then be molded and worked with to create a great product. Young people are more motivated. They are much more accepting of the answer ‘no’ than an adult is and that plays to their advantage,” Merkel said.

The 42 student spellers qualified for the bee by winning a classroom spelling bee, with each homeroom class having a representative,

along with one student from each individual Language Arts class and four winners from last year. “Welcome and thank you for coming. We have 42 spellers on stage today and they have been preparing for about a month. I would like to thank them for their preparation and also thank their parents and families for joining us today and also helping them prepare,” said Erica Putro, spelling bee coordinator. After three rounds, the number of spellers was whittled down to 12 and by round seven, the spelling bee was down to the final two spellers - Carrier and Ung. While the two spellers continued to battled it out, in round 10, words not seen prior to competition were introduced to the word list. Ung ended the spelling bee in round 12 with the correct spelling of postprandial. Spelling bee judges included Putro, Julie Webb, Michelle Napolitano, Melissa Nagy, Emily Sipe and Mary Lou Thacker. Assisting students on stage were Mike Kerensky and Vicki Latimer.

CUMC offers sensory-based Christmas experience By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield United Methodist Church hosted The Sights and Sounds of Christmas, a unique Christmas experience for students with special needs from preschool to age 21 in the community on Dec. 20. The event offered a Christmas experience, which was welcoming and accessible to all multiple disability students. “We know families of special needs folks are often hesitant to bring them to church for many reasons,” said Rev. Susan Brown, senior pastor. “We wanted to come up with a worship experience for these students which would not have sensory overload and would revolve around the Christmas story. We want everyone to have the opportunity to experience the story of the birth of Christ.” The program was a multi-sensory Christmas experience, including a nativity dress up, farm animal petting, cookie decorating and tasting, music making and sensory toy playing. Each station was set up with several volunteers from the church and the community. The nativity dress up was offered in the sanctuary with several costumes from which the students could choose. The farm animal petting offered two rabbits and a goat for the students to interact with and experience the sense of touch. The cookie decorating station offered sugar cookies, which could be decorated with icing and sprinkles, and gave the students the opportunity to experience the sense of taste. The music making station consisted of playing instruments, making motions to music, drumming on knees and, of course, singing carols, which offered the sense of sound. The sensory toy playing station offered students the sense of feel as they used a sensory table filled with uncooked rice and small items. The program was designed and executed by a group of educators with experience in working with disabled students who are part of the church congregation, with Linda Smith serving as committee chair. “Our committee consists of a group of educators from our congregation with experience in

working with disabled students, but this event focuses on multiple disabilities students. This is also part of our outreach to the community and we hope to make this an annual event. This is our first attempt and we will take notes from this year and apply it to next year,” Smith said. The church offered the program twice, with the first one open to students of Canfield, Austintown, Poland, Western Reserve and South Range school districts, and the second program open to students from Youngstown, Boardman and other local school districts. The students were also given a keepsake from each station which represented the purpose of the station.

Not only did students get a one-on-one kicking lesson on the football field, but he also reminded students that attitude, hard work and respecting yourself and others will lead to sccess. Wilkins also shared his Super Bowl ring and trophy with the students. “Everyone’s stories matter” is a reoccuring theme in Sabrina Eaton’s class.
