ARNOS VALE ISSUE by DAYLE DA SILVA

CABINET WAS EXPECTED to decide on a matter when it met yesterday to resolve an issue that is brewing between some residents of Arnos Vale and proprietors of business houses that are in close proximity to those residents. Minister of Housing, Montgomery Daniel told THE VINCENTIAN that a report had come to Cabinet, and that he was asked to investigate what is happening, in an effort to try and bring a resolution to the on-going issue. “I met with the residents, and I met with the entrepreneurs to see if some resolve could have been met; but both sides are firm on their own issues, and so, I just have to take the matter back to Cabinet for further discussion and approval. That is where we are at the moment,” Daniel explained. The issues, according to one resident, include loud music, smoke, traffic, rodents and dust which are coming from three business houses located along the main Arnos Vale road. The resident, who requested that she remain anonymous, told THE VINCENTIAN that she often feels like a prisoner in her own home, with the amount of smoke that emanates from the grills of at least two of the establishments. “It is a health hazard; these are the things that I am concerned about,” she explained. The issue has been on-going for close to a year, and according to the resident, there seems to be no compromise coming from two of the three proprietors. She said that she has made numerous calls to the police; however, when they turn up and make a request for the music to be turned down, after the authorities leave, it goes back up. Smoke is a constant problem, forcing her to keep her windows closed, and cement dust and noise from the nearby hardware are just some of the inconveniences she says she has to endure seven days a week, and until the early hours in the
