COVID-19 NUMBERS RISING: TWO DEATHS RECORDED Stories by DAYLE DA SILVA PRIME MINISTER DR. RALPH GONSALVES has admitted that the raw data on COVID-19 told a “worrying story.” In an address to the nation January 18, the Prime Minister said that between March and December 2020, St Vincent and the Grenadines recorded 110 positive PCR test results. However, between December 28, 2020 and January 17, 2021

Dr. Ralph Gonsalves admitted to a worry story and detailed measures taken to respond to the increasing numbers of COVID-cases. Continued on Page 3.

NO CURFEW, NO LOCKDOWN, PM DECLARES GOVERNMENT DOES NOT INTEND to impose any State of Emergency (SoE) or curfew measures, far less a national lockdown at this point, despite the recent spike in COVID19 cases in the country particularly among those locals without any recent history of travel. Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves made the point crystal clear on January 18 during an

address to the nation. Instead of ‘those draconian measures’, Dr. Gonsalves said the government had taken the decision to tighten and manage more closely the existing restrictions and regulations, and where it was deemed necessary and desirable, to ramp up the restrictions and controls further. In support of his government’s position,

the Prime Minister referenced the experiences of countries within CARICOM and globally, which suggested that States of Emergencies, curfews and total lockdowns have not been as effective in stemming the rise or spread of the virus as was anticipated. “Other experiences elsewhere including here in St Vincent and the Grenadines have proven

that the nuance and targeted approaches are no less effective,” he said. “But these nuances and targeted restrictions and regulations must be properly policed,” Gonsalves continued. And so, the government had taken the decision that it will not order any State of Emergency, lockdown and/or curfew.

Instead of having ‘draconian’ measures like curfews imposed upon them, residents have been urged to adhere to the existing regulations.
