RICHMOND EIA STILL A MYSTERY AS THE ‘DEBATE’ on the establishment of the Richmond quarry continues to occupy centre-stage here, a local Environmental Consultant, Dr. Reynold Murray, has weighed in on the discourse. Addressing in particular the issue of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which is basic to informing a decision on development works like the quarry in question, Dr. Murray, while
speaking on last Monday’s New Times Radio Programme on Nice Radio, corroborated that his firm, the Institute for Environmental Research and Technology (InERT), had conducted an EIA in the area in 2007/08. Responding to what emanated from certain quarters that it was this EIA that was being used or used to assess the current quarry project, Dr. Murray told New

Times listeners that this should not be since, the correct thing to do, was to base a decision on a “study with more recent information.” He explained that the company for whom he had conducted the EIA several years ago, proposed to concentrate its mining operations in rivers, with a smaller portion being on the headland in the area.

Dr. Reynold Murray, renowned Vincentian Environmental Consultant, has questioned the authorities’ purported use of an EIA he conducted more than a decade ago. BIGGER BIGS’ WANTS RESTORATION TO MARK THE ELEVENTH YEAR (2022) since his blockmaking and mining operations at Rabacca was effectively brought to a complete halt by the state acting on SR&O No2/2011, Leon ‘Bigger Bigs’ Samuel is demanding that Not one to be kept down for the ULP any length of time, Leon Government ‘Bigger Bigs’ Samuel moved restore his once from mining to operating a $11 million successful local food/drinks business. outlet in capital Kingstown. Samuel made this demand on the Saturday 12th February Perseverance and Strength segment of the CTVIEW Show aired on NICE Radio, and it was significant, as he noted, that it came amidst ongoing public debate on a Memorandum of Agreement between a St. Lucia concern and the Government of SVG, which allows the St. Lucian company to lease some 58 acres of land for thirty years, for the purpose of quarrying and mining, in Richmond. A weekly contributor to the CTVIEW show, Samuel, on that day, stated, inter alia, “Today is eleven years and one day since our business spitefully and willfully was shut down, and even though promises were made in the House of Parliament where Prime Minister Gonsalves stated he was lied to, yet still there is no reconciliation no consideration for the error as admitted by the State.” Samuel also took the opportunity to thank persons who helped bring his plight to the public including members of the media, Environmentalists Marlon Mills and Dr. Reynold Murray, and went on to highlight the irony of some of the environmental issues that will affect the residents of North Leeward, as being the same issues used as a basis for shutting down his business. In a related action, Samuel also posted on his Facebook page, Feb. 23, an open letter to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, in which he Continued on Page 3.
