FISHERMAN DROWNS AT LOWMANS BAY
AS IF THE MV FAIR CHANCE and the FV Glorious had not wrought enough worry, pain and grieving on the people of the Grenadines in particular, St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded another marine-related tragedy last Sunday, April 10. Reports are that Elzert ‘Southie’ Lampkin, a 36-year-old ,
a fisherman based at Lowman Bay, drowned while trying to swim ashore after his boat’s engine malfunctioned. According to his nephew who was on shore awaiting his return from what was a regular fishing trip, he saw his uncle swimming towards the shore. He was not too far away from the wharf, the nephew said, when he
went under and did not surface. The nephew immediately summoned help from other fishermen who retrieved Lampkin’s small fishing boat but when they searched the area where he had gone under, they found no trace of his body. In the meantime, the Coast Guard, which had been summoned earlier,
arrived on the scene and took Lampkin’s nephew on board to show the officers where he had last seen his uncle alive. As it was, however, the Coast Guard had no diver on board and did not commence then, any search for the missing man. They returned to base saying they would return with a diver. According to
information shared with THE VINCENTIAN, the Coast Guard did return and with the assistance of some local divers, were able to retrieve Lampkin’s body. In speaking with fishermen who, like Lampkin, use Lowmans Bay as their base of operations, he had prepared a meal enough for everyone who was on the beach the night of
