Burning airways
Smoke from hazard reduction burns was visually obvious and affected air quality late last month – and it’s just the start of the ‘backburning’ or fuelreduction season. It’s an important bushland practice but it seriously affects children and many people with asthma across Sydney, according to spokesman for Asthma Australia, Anthony Flynn. “Children have small airways and any irritants like smoke can cause serious problems to their breathing,” he said. “Yet we continue to experience the impacts of hazard reduction burns on people’s health.” Asthmatics are calling for better communication and monitoring systems before burns, not when breathing problems start. Asthma Australia advises that many people were ‘caught out’ recently – and that more needs to be done to help them prepare for reduced air quality. Asthma Australia aims to pressure authorities to better protect vulnerable people. The organisation advises parents of children with asthma to find extra information: ● At Asthma Australia’s Hazard Reduction Burn webpage at
www.asthmaaustralia.org.au
● On the 1800 Asthma Helpline (1800 278 462) for advice on preparation ● Via NSW Rural Fire Service’s free ‘Fires Near Me App’ to keep track of burns.
