What moves Lane Cove Fun Run director, Michelle Tabrett?

Run for it!

Michelle Tabrett and family are winding up for a huge day on September 8, the Lane Cove Fun Run: as event director, she will be running the logistics and about 100 volunteers, her partner Michael will be running the music, while their boys, Oliver, 10 and Elliott, 7, will be … running.

It’s the fourth anniversary of this great Longueville fundraiser which drew a crowd of 2,500 walkers, runners, and pram-pushing parents last year plus another 500 who came for hot traditional brekky or crepes, community stalls, live music and a hilarious parade of dressed-up pets. This year Michelle chose to send proceeds of the day to Sydney Community Services (SCS), which supports disabled and elderly to enjoy living independently at home. Michelle’s co-organiser, Vanessa Mundell, chose Got a Pen? as the other charity. Vanessa’s communications and marketing role sees her manage a raft of sponsors, including FIT Lane Cove gym (which holds warm-up sessions ahead of the two runs), and The Foot Group podiatry, Lane Cove Orthodontics, and Raine & Horne real estate. Michelle chose SCS as a charity because grandparents on both sides of her family had a connection with the organisation when it was Lane Cove Community Aid. “Dad’s father delivered meals as a volunteer for the organisation,” said Michelle, “And my mum’s mother, Norma Wark, was a huge advocate for older people staying in their homes. She loved the Community Aid’s social events such as cards and other games, and bigger events such as the fashion parade, and had many friends who relied on essential community services.”

BURNS BAY PHYSIOTHERAPY Physiotherapy – what to expect

We are often asked, ‘Can physiotherapy help my condition? What happens when I come to see a physiotherapist? As physiotherapists, we help people with pain or stiffness in their muscles, joints or nerves. For example, we see sports and work injuries, sprains and strains, back, neck, shoulder, knee, ankles problems. We can help whether your pain is severe and front of mind, your problem is longstanding or a problem that interferes with your quality of life. When you book an appointment at Burns Bay Physiotherapy, we will email you a form to complete (and return to us prior to your appointment). We want to learn about your problem, how it affects you and what you want from us. During your first visit, we will listen to you and learn more about your problem. We then perform a detailed assessment of your muscles, joints and movements to ascertain what is contributing to your problem and determine the best way of helping you. This will usually involve a combination of hands-on treatment and education about exercises, prevention and self-management strategies. We will work with you to get the best possible outcomes so you can enjoy the activities that are important to you.

“I think it’s important to help kids connect ideas such as fundraising and the need to look after seniors in the community, and how the proceeds of this run will support services for seniors.” “Last year we gave to global charities, Beyond Blue and prostate cancer but the point of the day is about community, family, and bringing people together. So we chose local community charities this year.” Michelle’s mother was born in Lane Cove in 1950 and she says her family are ‘old Lane Cove’, with her two sons being the family’s third generation at Lane Cove Public School on Longueville Rd. When she’s not organising massive events, this teacher who has taken a year out of her regular primary school role and retrained to teach learning difficulties is busy as an educational therapist at Sydney Therapy & Co. in Lane Cove. This new facet of her career was inspired by benefits gained by both her sons through speech and occupational therapy tuition with Sydney Therapy & Co. Michelle has been involved since the run’s inception when she and event founder, Carla FitzSimons, spent several years getting it off the ground despite hurdles of approvals for road closures. Staging the event costs $15,000, but with help from sponsors and a council grant which pays for the biggest cost – road closures again – it returns a profit which is gratefully received by charities and their clients.

There’s no longer a 10 km run because Longueville residents found it hard to live with the extra road closures but the 2km and 5km runs attract literally of thousands moving for fitness, for personal bests and … just for fun.
