Welcome distractions

hello This area is a hotbed of creativity – not just art, but clever business ideas, unusual cuisines, interesting and inspiring community groups, charity drives and more - all of which require a spark of an idea and more than a few rolled up shirt sleeves. This month TVO went a bit art crazy as you will see in the pages of this month’s edition – something came upon us, and I suspect it’s probably a reaction to the current state of events: if your physical surroundings are limited, then taking flight in your own creations, or the creations of others, is something to be cherished.

The response to our return last month was overwhelming positive – thank you, readers. As our handy helper Alex stood in the Village giving away copies, he was warmly greeted by residents expressing their delight at TVO’s comeback. It’s good to be back giving you a quiet moment when you can sit back, sip a cuppa and catch up with local happenings. Hopefully you have noticed the TVO stands that are dotted around (Lane Cove, Greenwich, Hunters Hill, Boronia Park, Northwood, St Leonards and Crows Nest) – and have earmarked your pick-up spot. We are proud to shine a spotlight this month on Gallery Lane Cove’s “Dyarra Murrama Guwing (The Sun Setting Red)” exhibition which explores a First Nations’ women’s response to last summer’s bushfires. It led to many fascinating conversations with many fabulous creative women. It also coincides with this month’s NAIDOC Week, so I’ll leave you now with a quote from this year’s theme: “Always was. Always will be.”

news Garibaldi Village to come alive for summer evening event with OzHarvest founder and CEO Wishbone Sydney, the boutique in Hunters Hill Garibaldi Village, is hosting its first “In Conversation…” event with OzHarvest founder and CEO Ronni Khan.

An outdoor event in the glorious sandstone courtyard, Ronni will talk about her inspiring and intimate new memoir, A Repurposed Life. Tickets will include a copy of Ronni’s book and a glass of wine.

As the owner of a successful events company, Ronni found herself throwing away huge volumes of leftover food at the end of each day. When she hit midlife, she found herself no longer able to turn a blind eye to the food waste problem. Hand delivering untouched food to homeless shelters around Sydney became her renegade solution, and the story grew from there.

The event marks the first in a series for Wishbone Sydney, which is planning similar future events that will bring summer evenings to life at Garibaldi Village.

Tickets for the event, taking place on Tuesday November 24, are on sale now through Eventbrite. Be sure to arrive at 6:45pm for a 7:00pm start. COVID-safe restrictions apply, so take along a facemask. Tickets are limited, so don’t delay.

Lane Cove Art Society: “Plein Air” November 26th is the last meeting for Lane Cove Art Society this year. To end the year with positivity, the group propose to have a “plein air” demonstration at the Coal Loader at Waverton. Two time slots of 2pm – 4.30pm and 5.30pm – 8pm are being pencilled in until numbers are confirmed as only 20 people can attend each slot. There are toilets and a coffee shop.

The coffee shop closes early so please bring your own refreshments. Tutors will be advised at a later date.

LaVoce choir goes virtual Limited by the constraints of COVID-19 and the insistence that singing (and dancing) were not to be undertaken in groups, Lane Cove choir LaVoce got creative, and from that LaVoce Virtual was born. After more than 20 rehearsals online, 30 singers now come together to sing. The group even held a concert on September 17 via Zoom with 70 different groups signing in to hear the choir singing, watch performances by choir family members and join a singalong where all experienced how it works virtually.

Bakers Delight raises funds for Delvena Women’s Refuge Lane Cove Bakers Delight has celebrated its 25th birthday by raising $600 for Delvena Women’s Refuge.

The bakery donated 100% of one day’s traditional loaf sales to the refuge, which has been providing emergency accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence for 35 years.

The local bakery has been in operation since 1995, with current Franchisee Joyce Aimond taking over the reins in 1996. Joyce says “I love the tightknit community of Lane Cove and have very strong connections with my regular customers, so I wanted the birthday to be something the whole community could celebrate and get behind”.

Lane Cove Rotary hosts mega raffle for annual fundraiser

It’s this time of year when Lane Cove comes out to celebrate the Rotary Fair. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has dampened proceedings and the Fair fundraiser will not take place this year.

Instead, Rotary is organising a sensational mega raffle with many fabulous prizes on offer including a Fisher & Paykel quad door refrigerator; LG 65-inch 4K Nano91 TV and a Cedar Summit Country Vista Cubby House.

Local Development Updates: • Northwood Shops Planning Proposal: As a result of the government’s “Planning System Acceleration Programmeâ€? (a tool designed to speed up the processes around developments in a bid to stimulate jobs and the economy during COVID-19), developer Pathways Property Group received the OK to construct a an aged care facility in an area where it was previously prohibited. The developer has now lodged a DA outlining its plans: a residential aged care facility with 143 beds, commercial premises, and a medical centre that would offer a hydrotherapy pool. A basement will be constructed for parking and 11 trees, along with the current buildings, will be removed. Submissions will have unfortunately closed by time of print.

Memorial seat unveiled for ‘local treasure’ Lane Cove residents and friends of the late Joyce Mills have come together to unveil a memorial seat in her honour mere steps from her home of 55 years on Ronald Avenue.

• The Land and Environment Court have approved the $10m development at 640-646 Mowbray Rd, which will see the build of 37 units across five storeys, along with basement carparking for 65 vehicles. The developer, Staldone Turramurra, are quoted as saying it will “meet increased housing demand and population growth in the area.â€? • The State Independent Planning Commission is soon expected to make a final decision on the redevelopment of Greenwich Hospital. The existing buildings will be demolished, with the exception of the heritage listedPallister building. The new development will span three buildings (one 10 storeys high), space for 150 hospital beds and 89 units for seniors.

Local Greenwich resident and artist, Joyce sadly passed away nearly seven years ago at the wonderful age of 99, but her nearest and dearest friends and neighbours still remember her with great affection.

Joyce was a local identity and eccentric artist whose paintings won many awards and graced the walls of numerous homes and establishments including Lane Cove Council Chambers.

Joyce was born the day before WW1 broke out, and attended Artarmon Public School from 1922. She took up painting in her 60s, and soon made a name for herself as a diverse and talented artist using many mediums and trying various styles.

She was a long-term friend of renowned local artist, Lloyd Rees and was a member of the Lane Cove Art Society for decades.

Hyecorp opens applications for community grants Community groups are invited to apply for one of six 2020 Hyecorp Community Grants. Each worth $2000, there will be two available in each of the Lane Cove, Willoughby and Ku-ring-gai areas.

Applications close 30 November 2020 with judging taking place in early December and cheques given to the winning community groups prior to Christmas.

Hyecorp have been giving back to the local community for many years through community grants, donations, sponsorships, and volunteering.

It has supported more than 35 different community organisations across Lane Cove, Greenwich, Willoughby, and Ryde.

Hyecorp commenced the Community Grants initiative in 2012 and grants have supported the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra, Lane Cove Historical Society, Lane Cove West Public School, Greenwich Sailing Club, Willoughby Badminton Association, North Sydney Junior Baseball Club and many other community groups. It is also a major sponsor of both the Lane Cove Football Club and the Lane Cove Municipal Art Award since 2012.

If you’ve fallen in love with a house but you don’t want to risk losing it at auction, you can always offer to buy it prior to auction. Buying at auction can be daunting for many buyers and you do have to be well researched on the property and your own financial position. You also have to be ready to out-bid other prospective buyers in front of the public. So, how can you buy a house privately, even if it’s going to auction?

You can always make a pre-auction offer through the agent. While some agents may recommend you do this as early as possible, typically unless the offer is much higher than the guide, vendors won’t accept offers early in an auction campaign. Keep in mind that some vendors have chosen to sell via auction because they want a higher price for their home with no cooling off period so be willing to negotiate other aspects of the sale when you make your offer.

Be Ready to put in an offer - Make sure you already have your pre-approval before you put in your pre-auction bid with the agent. Doing this will help speed up the process of sale which can also help convince the vendor to accept your early offer. It also allows you to safely negotiate the price without overstepping your means. Before you put in your offer, have a building and pest inspection of the property complete. This means you can also offer a shorter cooling off period or waive the cooling off period when you make your bid. If you want to be ready to sign the contract as soon as your offer has been accepted, make sure you’ve already reviewed it with your solicitor or conveyancer and are comfortable with the terms.

Be prepared for other bidders - While the house is scheduled to go to auction, you might not be the only interested buyer who has made an early, pre-auction bid. Much like at an auction, other offers that are made can drive the price of the house up. If there are multiple parties interested in the property and the vendor is willing to sell to the highest offer made, the agent may continue contacting you with the counter-offer. You’ll need to be ready to offer more than you did initially, so it helps to have a budget in mind before you get there.

While properties may be scheduled to sell at auction, vendors may be willing to accept a preauction bid. Make sure you speak to the agent about making an offer and they should guide you as to if, and when the vendors may be willing to consider selling prior to auction.

The Write Wrongs

Back in the day, proof-readers and editors worth their salt weeded out typos of all shapes and sizes. Errant apostrophes, punctuation, spelling and grammar were all in their sights.

These days we’re all our own editor for a raft of daily communications such as texting, social media or workplace documents.

But as a writer (and adult born in the last century) I can’t bring myself to abbreviate my messages. Even the acronyms scare me. (I learned the hard way that LOL does not mean ‘lots of love’ but ‘laugh out loud’ when I posted it on a group condolence board.)

Single finger typing (laborious stabbing at your screen with your index finger, Oxford commas and all, usually without your glasses and in the biggest font the screen allows), is slower than carrier pigeon, so cue autocorrect, bringing with it a host of new pitfalls to avoid, as mentioned in an earlier column.

But whether the missive is from the twenty first century, the twentieth century or earlier, the author is still accountable for his or her writing accuracy.

There’s a certain gleeful kudos to be gained from discovering literary mistakes. I’m reading the new Robert Galbraith novel right now (J.K. Rowling’s pen name). Hang on, I thought, when the detective interviewed a Hampton Court tour guide in February – isn’t it closed in winter (like many National Trust venues in the UK)? A quick Google confirmed this.

Feeling not a little smug about tripping up the Great and Wonderful JKR, I posted this on a writers’ forum.

‘In fiction there are no boo boos, just an author’s creativity and imagination,’ was one response. While others put written mistakes on par with war crimes. You know who you are, you television yeller you.

In fact there are dozens of teeny tiny continuity errors in JKR’s masterpiece Harry Potter series which have inspired reams of forums. JKR refuses to correct them (“As obsessive fans will tell you, I do slip up!”) - but why would

you if you were her, and anyway it’s more fun to look for them, like doing a Where’s Wally puzzle (such as the corner in the round Gryffindor common room).

Literary boo boos extend well beyond the usual you’re and your. Words have to be correct for the period. You wouldn’t find Anne Boleyn describing Henry VIII as a handsome dude. Missing words are just as dangerous, like the missing ‘not’ in the 1631 edition of the Holy Bible leaving the commandment as ‘Thou Shalt Commit Adultery.’

Or Robinson Crusoe, who strips naked and swims out to the sinking ship to retrieve supplies, which he carries back to shore by shoving them into his pockets.

Presumably Daniel Defoe couldn’t think of another way his now famous castaway could retrieve his stuff, so he left it in there.

Movie errors are just as fun to spot, like the white car driving alongside the charging Scots in Braveheart, or the gas canister strapped to the undercarriage of an overturned Roman chariot in Gladiator, or the jeanswearing extra in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Unless you’re Quentin Tarantino, in which case you just claim all mistakes are deliberate.

And to be clear: any errors in this column are ironic.

interview: Sol Contardo Sol Contardo is artist-in-residence at Gallery Lane Cove, working as a visual artist and ceramicist. Having spent time living in Chile, Mexico, the UK and France, Sol and her family call Riverview and Lane Cove home. Here she talks to TVO about her life and the inspiration for her “Te Hoseken Harw, The Edge of the World” exhibition.

 You moved to Lane Cove seven years after living in Chile. Can you tell us what brought you here?

My husband was asked to move here to cover Asia Pacific and Latin America for his work. We arrived and instantly fell in love with the Lane Cove area and Sydney in general.

Schools have always been important for us and the area offered fantastic options for our four kids.  Your childhood saw you move 14 times to different countries around the world – and the globe-trotting continued into adult life. Have you enjoyed it and how has that experience shaped your outlook?

I feel blessed to have actively participated in the daily life and culture of so many diverse places and peoples.

Travelling as a tourist is great, but to really know a place you need to live and breathe the local communities. Each place has contributed to my formation, and we wanted to give this experience to our kids too.  How did your kids fare switching between a life in Santiago and Sydney? And how do the two cities compare in terms of raising a family?

It’s harder for the kids leaving family and friends, but the Lane Cove community and their schools have been very welcoming. Both cities have the offerings and challenges of any modern metropolis, and with fantastic options for outdoor activities. Skiing at our doorstep in Santiago and the water and beaches here.  Previously you worked as a photographer.

What made you switch to Visual Arts and Ceramics?

More than a switch, I think it was a focus. Working with clay connects me to the Earth, which I feel will resonate with Australians. I now create my visions rather than capture those of others. The two areas definitely compliment each other.

 Can you tell us how you landed at Gallery Lane Cove as their artist in residence?

The gallery is a fantastic facility we are very lucky to have.

After studying a Diploma of Visual Arts in Ceramics at TAFE I wanted to have a space locally to both work on my own ideas as well as pass on my knowledge for the enjoyment of others. We have increased the range of classes and I feel very lucky to have the chance to participate in this great community project.  Your new exhibition is inspired by the indigenous people, the Selk’nam. What drew you to their story?

There are many aspects that engaged me with this magnificent culture. The pure perseverance of living in the extreme conditions at the southern most tip of the Earth.

Being Chilean I was aware of them, but once I started to research, I wanted to know more and help spread their story. The women got the men to do the housework, but you will have to come to the exhibition to hear about that!  How has the story of the Selk’nam inspired your work?

It has been a process; thinking how to share their amazing story whilst being very sensitive to their beliefs and spirituality. I was also fascinated by the body paintings and masks used in their initiation ceremony. My intention was to build pieces that reflect their connection with their beliefs and cosmology as part of their on-Earth existence. I want to help record their history as a family centred community, whose existence can inspire us today.  Have you engaged with the descendants of the Selk’nam, and if so, what was their reaction to your work?

Most definitely. It was very important for me that the exhibition was respectful and sensitive to their spirits, and how the initiation ceremony and its pieces are portrayed

and displayed today. They have been very encouraging and will in some way be “present” at the exhibition. I have had regular Zoom calls with their representative and they have been very complimentary about the pieces.  Do you find Australia inspirational as an artist? And is there anything in particular that sparks your imagination?

Absolutely. The sheer vastness and natural beauty is a feast of inspiration. My batteries get recharged in particular with the beach and ocean, of which there are plenty locally.

I find the ceramics community to be both engaging and supportive of each other. I also find people here aware and appreciative of the effort and energy that goes into producing art.

 You teach Ceramics at Gallery Lane Cove.

Can you tell us about the course/s you offer?

Due to family schedules, my teaching time has been focused on weekdays and Saturday daytime classes for both kids and adults of all ages. This covers both work on the wheel and hand building from beginner onwards. I very much encourage everyone to give it a go. A cup of tea tastes even better out of a mug you made yourself.

Sol’s exhibition, “Te Hoseken Harw, The Edge of the World”, takes place November 5 to December 5 at Gallery Lane Cove.

Hunter’s Hill Council calls for input on creation of community, lifestyle and cultural hubs Council is calling for local residents to submit their recommendations for what will quite possibly be the area’s largest regeneration project in decades.

On the table are a wealth of designs that will breathe new life into the suburb. Compiled from a decade’s research, 30 documents from regeneration experts and thousands of conversations with people living in the area, the draft plan contains a whole host of revitalisation projects.

Among them are the creation of three community hubs which will deliver Hunter’s Hill first library, contemporary community and cultural arts spaces, as well as additional housing to provide quality over 55’s and/or smaller style accommodation for local people who wish to downsize.

Council is also looking to create a Lifestyle and Wellbeing Hub located in the Henley Precinct that includes Henley Community Centre, Henley Cottage, Riverside Preschool, Gladesville Reserve, the skate park and basketball courts and The Happy Hens community garden. There are many opportunities that the space can offer. Finally, the Council is scoping a Heritage and Cultural Facilities Hub. The vision for this hub, located on the corner of Alexandra and D’Aram streets in the area occupied by Hunters Hill Town Hall and the existing Council administration centre and depot, is to celebrate the culture and heritage of this place. The hub would be home to Hunters Hill Theatre, Hunters Hill Music Club, an art gallery and an expanded Hunters Hill Museum. The performance space would be contemporary and offer a unique experience.

P

re-COVID-19, when people would ask what I did for a living, I would flippantly reply “I sell dreams!” Lo and behold, now that is true! Though in reality, I’m now in the “create those dreams ready to make them happen” mode.

None of us are sure when that will be.

And as the days roll on, the hope of a vaccine seems more distant than originally envisaged.

Yet there are glimmers of hope out there. Some of our leaders, those not politicising the virus for election purposes, are firmly in the camp that we must learn to live with COVID-19 and plan around it. Hence, domestic borders are opening and, hopefully as your read this, Victorians will have been let out of jail, and we in NSW might be able to travel freely to Tassie, the Northern Territory and Queensland.

Goodness knows we all need a holiday. And of course, there is the one-way bubble from NZ that we pray will soon morph into a return bubble so we can soon pop across the Tasman.

And then maybe Singapore and maybe Japan…

Contrary to what you might think, the travel industry is not dead. Gasping for breath, yes, but still a long way from lifeless! So what is the Trendsetter team booking?

ROAD TRIPS & TOURING – so far during COVID-19, I have savoured again the delights of the Blue Mountains, the central west, the Riverina and northern NSW. The landscapes are now mostly verdant, the flowers – be they Patterson’s Curse, golden canola, or spring blossoms – were magnificent. I am not alone and this communion with our own backyard is rekindling enquiries about nature based tours here, and abroad. Fortunately, you don’t need to go overseas for walking tours, botanic tours, and cultural tours. Australia offers a huge choice – let us know what appeals and we’ll provide the perfect solution.

and a teacher,” she explains. Like McGrady, Nadeena too has created new works for this specific show.

Understanding how spirituality, from a female perspective, plays into the heart of this show’s message will undoubtedly spark conversation with the audience. Kyra explains, “As traditional custodians, the Aboriginal people have much to impart and share in terms of how we relate to nature, flora and fauna. The Aboriginal female perspective and insights to environmental care highlight how we can realign our relationship with nature and begin the process of healing and renewal.”

The female scaffold underpinning “Dyarra Murrama Guwing (The Sun Setting Red),” is rooted in the First Nations womens experience of living in a society that often privileges the male view. Carmen Glynn-Braun, an emerging Australian artist stemming from the Southern Arrernte, Kaytetye, and Ammatyerre nations across Central Australia, explains how shows like this attempt to open challenging conversations such as the ongoing privilege of the male view.

“As an artist who unpacks a lot of heavy political content within my work, I find art is one of the only safe spaces for people of colour to explore these themes freely,” she says.

“Art for me is about truth telling and offering a translucent extension of myself and my experiences in the world.”

Like Nadeena, Carmen is a multidisciplinary artist.

Fascinatingly, her work for Gallery Lane Cove is devised as a response to Barbara’s and Nadeena’s.

Guardian Australia’s Indigenous affairs editor Lorena Allam wrote in January of this year: “It’s a particular grief, to lose forever what connects you to a place in the landscape.

Our ancestors felt it, our elders felt it, and now we are feeling it all over again as we watch how the mistreatment and neglect of our land and waters for generations, and the pig-headed foolishness of coalobsessed climate change denialists turn everything and everyone to ash.”

Carmen is quite clear about what needs to change: “This (the fires) obviously could have been prevented. Indigenous land preservation methods absolutely could have been utilised here. Skilled burning methods preventing bush fires have been carried out by First Nations Peoples for thousands of years, from all over Australia. And many different types of country from salt water to desert. I carry some sadness that this is only being heavily investigated now - after such a catastrophic event. Our knowledge should be considered as expertise always, and my hope is that we are to maintain it from here.”

River celebrations They say you can’t step in the same river twice and with so much change in 2020 we certainly could do with a reminder of how special it is to live by the ebbs and tides of Lane Cove’s rivers…

Lane Cove River is about 15 kilometres long, stretching from Thornleigh through until Greenwich where it meets Parramatta River and becomes Sydney Harbour.

Middens heaps along the river foreshores indicate that Aboriginal people occupied the area for thousands of years. The river was likely a travel route, rather than just a barrier to be crossed, and the Cameraygal people were skilled in making and using their canoes. The Cameraygal people relied seasonally on the Lane Cove River as a major source of their food with the estuaries providing food such as shellfish, fish, prawns, turtles and turtle eggs, eels, crabs, yabbies and waterfowl and their eggs. They people fished with nets and spears or would line fish from bark canoes. Fish traps were also known. The majority of the surviving Aboriginal sites are recorded within 200 metres of the

foreshore, indicating the importance of the river system.

Lane Cove River is also important to several threatened species such as the White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Eastern Osprey. Ospreys patrol coastal waterways and feed mostly on fish caught by diving and catching fish on the surface or even under the water.

The larger White-bellied Sea-Eagle is a skillful hunter of fish, turtles, sea snakes and even mammals and other birds up to the size of a swan. Both of these birds of prey can be seen soaring above the river near Manns Point in Greenwich or perched upriver near Linley Point and Ventemans Reach.

A less obvious threatened species which relies on the river is the nocturnal Fishing Bat Myotis macropus. This palm-sized microbat is the only species of bat in Australia to capture fish for food. It is thought

to use echolocation to detect ripples on the waters’ surface made by its prey. It captures aquatic invertebrates, prawns and small fish by trawling their large specially adapted feet along the water’s surface. Only discovered here in 2015, it shows how much we should value, and can still learn, about our wonderful waterway.

It’s National Recycling Week this month so I have taken the opportunity to provide an update on some activities that our Waste and Sustainability teams have been busy rolling out.

Latest News

Award for reduced waste: Congratulations to Council’s Waste Team who recently won the Excellence in the Environment - Behaviour Change in Waste Award from Local Government NSW (LGNSW). The Award recognises the significant reduction in illegal dumping following a targeted campaign in a range of hot spot areas.

Since the beginning of 2019, more than 7,500 household clean ups have been booked. During this time close to 250 instances of kerbside dumping were reported. We are pleased that the majority of illegally dumped materials are self-removed once we tag and identify them on-site.

Greener Apartments Program: This free initiative from Council can help save on the overall running costs of apartment buildings by working with strata schemes to reduce their energy, waste and water. Participants receive independent expert advice and with 10 apartments signing up during the first few weeks we can tell this is an important service to provide.

Sporting Ovals: Many of our local ovals have been transformed in time for the cricket season while the chicane gates at Kingsford Smith Oval are now open on weekdays from 7:30am – 3:30pm.

Recent Works: A number of local streets have recently been resurfaced with new asphalt including sections of Karilla Avenue, Bridge Street and Fox Street. A new footpath has been installed in Allison Avenue as well as in Kimberley Avenue from Allison Avenue to Mafeking Avenue.

Caring for our community

Mental Health: Last month Council made a commitment to consider ways in which it can better help support mental health in our community. While Council isn’t the provider of mental health services we are confident there is a role for us to play as a local resource, particularly given the challenging year of 2020. A report will be prepared for Council on a framework for Mental Health Month.

Sustainability Small Grants: Two local organisations will benefit from funding through our Sustainability Small Grants program. Happy Kids Early Learning will be going on an excursion to learn about waste and recycling; while St Andrew’s Uniting Church Longueville will be installing an upgraded solar PV system. Council’s Sustainability Small Grants program runs twice a year with the next round in March 2021.

Gore Bay Terminal Newsletter COVID 19 update Like all companies in Australia we are continuing to navigate the impacts of COVID 19.

With many Australian State and Territories easing mobility restrictions we are seeing fuel volumes return to more normal levels.

Through our Gore Bay and Clyde/ Parramatta Terminals, Viva Energy is proud to help supply the fuels that NSW needs including fuel at service stations for motorists and trucking customers, to airports, and to our commercial customers including bunkering services for ships.

Emergency Response Exercise

As part of our emergency response preparedness, we hold inter-agency simulations annually.

The most recent exercise involved an integrated and multi-agency response to a simulated maritime environmental emergency. The exercise involved the establishment of an exclusion zone, the deployment of a boom the use of a tug for spraying water.

Building Ongoing Relationships Viva Energy continues to strengthen its relationship with our important customer, the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

In June, we had the pleasure of welcoming the HMAS Sirius back to Gore Bay where we loaded a combination cargo of diesel and marine fuel oil to enable her to depart for participation in naval exercises. It’s great to be able to directly support not only such a key strategic customer, but also the committed men and women of the ADF whilst they proudly serve our country.

New Piles and Fenders After receiving relevant approvals, we have almost completed a project to replace the existing wooden berthing piles and rubber fendering system at our second berth. This follows the 2019 completion of a project to replace the marine loading arms on the same wharf.

The wooden piles were replaced with new steel piles equipped with a comprehensive corrosion protection system.

Berth two is a highly utilised berth being our main loading facility for our cruise ship customers (via our dedicated bunker barges), the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and Harbour City Ferries (via our dedicated dumb barge ‘FBA2’).

These enhancements to our key berth infrastructure will ensure that we continue

to safely and efficiently supply the harbour’s commercial fuel requirements long into the future.

In September, Viva Energy were again proud to sponsor Indigenous Literacy Day which is run by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).

The ILF is a charity that focuses on three important programs for remote children and their families:

Cooking oils: choices, choices, choices…

There are hundreds on the market. Here is a selection of some that are the most readily-available (and one we’ve thrown in because it so damn delicious). All have different properties and should be used in different ways. Probably best not to deep fry your chips in them, though.

Extra-Virgin Olive Oil This one rarely turned up in the 1970s kitchen some of us grew up in, but it’s a modern-day staple. It has earned its reputation as a healthy, versatile fat and it makes an excellent choice for its antioxidant content and hearthealthy fats. But its low smoke point (the temperature at which it begins to degrade and release damaging free radicals) means it’s not always the best oil to use for cooking. For this reason, maybe best to save it for dips, salads, and dressings.

Light Olive Oil First up, ‘light’ refers to its neutral taste, not a lack of calories! Light olive oil has a far higher smoke point of about 243c, so it’s good for high-temperature cooking - sautéing, roasting, and grilling.

Coconut Oil Like most other oils, coconut comes in two varieties: refined or unrefined.

Refined coconut oil has a high smoke point - 232c. It works well for sautéing or roasting and has a neutral, lightcoconut taste. Virgin coconut oil, on the other hand, offers a signature coconut flavour and can be used at temperatures up to 177c – again, useful in lighter, colder dishes.

Avocado Oil Avocado oil has a high smoke point – good for searing, browning, or baking foods. Avocado oils are high in monounsaturated fats, but they can be priced high as it takes several avocados to produce even a small

amount. However, its neutral flavour means it accompanies fish, chicken and vegetables well.

Sesame Oil Sesame oil is derived from the seeds of a flowering sesame plant native to East Africa and India. Its hearty, nutty flavour has turned it into a kitchen staple for many and it combines high levels of mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Excellent for stir-fried dishes and salad dressings, research suggests it also has a host of health benefits such as lowering cholesterol and inflammation in the body.

Peanut Oil It’s thought that peanut oil may reduce heart disease risk factors, improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. It is also a great source of vitamin E. However, 20% of it is made up of saturated fats, which means it probably shouldn’t be used too regularly. It has a relatively high smoke point meaning that it is great for stir-fry. Its flavour is pretty irresistible too.

Sunflower Oil This oil is high in vitamin E - one tablespoon contains 28% of a person’s daily recommended intake. It has a high smoke point, and its flavour is neutral so it accompanies all dishes well. Sunflower oil is loaded with omega-6 fatty acids – essential for us humans, but known to cause inflammation – so best to use it sparingly.

Flaxseed Oil Manufacturers cold press flaxseed to extract the oil – also known as linseed oil. Similar to flaxseed, flaxseed oil may help lower cholesterol levels and reduce the likelihood of diabetes.

Flaxseed oil is sensitive to heat, so cooking with it will change the nutritional properties - perhaps best to use it in colder dishes.

local oil Lemon Myrtle Infused Macadamia Oil Let’s get local, and indulgent.

This oil is produced by infusing macadamia oil with lemon myrtle, a spice unique to the Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. The oil retains the macadamia flavour in a delicate balance with the gentle tang of the lemon myrtle. A superb oil for salad dressings, mayonnaise, pesto and sauces, it can also be drizzled over hot or cold, fish, chicken, lamb, and pasta or vegetable dishes.

Use as a marinade prior to cooking to tenderise meat or poultry dishes. High smoke point 210°C.

Mood disorders in the time of COVID-19: the importance of relationships

New findings highlight how the deterioration of close relationships during COVID-19 is having a negative impact on people’s mental health, particularly among those with mood disorders, explains clinical psychologist Andrew Wu.

“There tends to be a sole focus on the sufferer when diagnosed or at-risk of a mood disorder. However, it is also important to consider the complexities of the people’s relationships with others, and how this can help or hinder sufferers’ progress,” explained Wu. Greater awareness of the role of psychological treatment in developing and maintaining positive relationships with the self and others is needed in order to reduce the escalation of distress for those at risk or suffering from mood disorders.

“There are often hidden or predisposing factors that allow people to be more at-risk of mood disorders.

This could be genetic, social, cultural or environmental factors. If loved ones could be aware of the signs this could increase the chance of prevention and early intervention,” Wu said.

Family and friends can provide better care if they are informed about the illness, understand the type of treatment and are aware of the expected recovery time. The signs and symptoms of mood disorders include: • F eeling sad most of the time or nearly every day • Loss of appetite or over-eating

The COVID-19 pandemic and enforced social isolation has resulted in significant changes in the way people interact, placing relationships under pressure. While these changes brought about by COVID-19 may be difficult for us all, people suffering from mood disorders are more vulnerable to the negative impacts and may require additional psychological support.

During these challenging times, it is crucial that people experiencing a decline in their mental health seek help early rather than attempting to cope with the problem on their own, particularly amidst the mental health impacts of social isolation.

New findings from Relationships Australia indicate that Australians are struggling to maintain positive relationships during COVID-19 isolation, with 42% of people reporting a negative change in their relationship with their partner as a result of social isolation and challenging living situations.

Andrew Wu, a clinical psychologist at Ramsay Psychology, describes how extremely beneficial positive relationships are in supporting those with mental health conditions.

“People who are predisposed to mood disorders are developing

severe psychological problems as a result of the lockdown, amid growing stresses over isolation and relationship breakdown. Being cut off from family and friends, and disruption to healthcare services are exacerbating existing mental health problems.

Additionally, those experiencing a disconnect in their relationships are less likely to receive support from loved ones who would have otherwise picked up signs of deterioration in their mental health. Importantly, transforming relationships into ones that feel safe, secure and connected is extremely effective in reducing the symptoms of mood disorder – it is therefore crucial for loved ones to maintain healthy relationships with those at risk of mood disorders,” said Wu. Where mood disorders may be present it is important to take action – psychological support in the form of individual, family and relationship therapy can help improve a person’s ability to develop and nurture stable and loving relationships. Fostering personal connections with highly qualified teams in relationship support can bridge the current gap between the under-resourced hospital treatments and limited communitybased therapies on offer.

A Tale of Three Cities The art scenes of London, Toronto and Sydney have their similarities and their differences. Lane Cove artist Diana Hallowes has lived and painted in all three.

Here she recalls her experiences and her views of the three metropolises.

S

ydney is a beautiful city. As an artist it is a challenge to express its glorious landscapes and brilliant light in paint on paper. “Why didn’t I find this place sooner?” I said to myself when I first arrived. I discovered the joy of painting en plein air, a good excuse to sit on a rock looking at the sea or to make a close up examination of some of the unique trees. Sydney is a visual feast and I have never tired of looking.

So when I found myself in Toronto, Canada a few years later, I was at first unimpressed by the workaday, mainly flat cityscape, where the temperature plummeted to -25C in midwinter and hovered between -5C and -10C for months.

Yet I found a lively art scene there. Studying at the Toronto School of Art, known as the best alternative art school in town, I enjoyed arguments with colleagues about what art could be and what you were trying to say in your work. “Do you believe in mastery?” my tutor asked. I’d always taken that as a given – surely Rembrandt, Turner et al were masters and you were always working to improve your technique. But at TSA rather than being shown how to do things, you were encouraged to think creatively. Everyone’s work was their own.

There were examples of creative thinking in the little galleries down Queen Street West, which were fun to explore. Some of it was site specific and some was protest art. Much could not be sold. “Non-commissioned” sculptures appeared in parks and on street corners – and were sometimes taken down.

Toronto had its uptown, commercial galleries too, and beautiful art museums such as the Art Gallery of Ontario.

There I was introduced to the work of pioneers of Canadian art. The Group of Seven, for example, went out into the Canadian wilderness and created art which spoke of Canada, not of Europe. They were justly famous but I had never heard of them. I thought of the Heidelberg School in Australia, unknown to most Canadians, and reflected how few artists are truly international in reputation.

One thing I found in common between Sydney and Toronto was the willingness of the public to buy art by unknown artists. You could exhibit your work and if people liked it they would buy it.

This was not the case in London, where I found myself a few years later. I loved London and lost no time in immersing myself in the wealth of art in galleries such as the National Gallery and the Tate, where it seemed a lifetime of looking and studying would never be enough. But how to insert my art into the London scene was less obvious. “Go local” was the advice given to me, and I eventually joined the Richmond Art Society and the Fulham Society of Artists and Potters, through whom I found workshops, fellow artists and exhibition opportunities. But sales were elusive, unless you were well known.

England has a long watercolour tradition, encompassing the botanical, the topographic, the picturesque, the romantic and the visionary. Best known is the flowering of watercolour landscape during the 18th and 19th centuries.

I was lucky enough to see exhibitions documenting this history. The tradition continues: The Royal Watercolour Society regularly shows work at Bankside Gallery (near the Tate Modern) and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour shows at Mall Galleries.

“art is something that finds you out” Britain is my heritage, as it is for many Australians and Canadians – somehow a place of homecoming even for people who have never been there before. It is so too for English speakers from South Africa, the place of my birth.

When I emigrated to Australia I was determined to leave behind that country of protest and conflict and become Australian. But art is something that finds you out: “That’s an African tree,” my first art teacher told me. “Go outside and look.” Similarly, homesick in Toronto I painted the sea and rockpools of Sydney, and was told: “The sea’s not that

colour, it looks like a tourist brochure.” Looking at the grey north Atlantic, I saw what they were getting at.

Now back in Sydney in the time of Covid, I think wistfully of London’s galleries and the time when Florence and Amsterdam were a hop and a step away. But as I walk out into the sunlight with my paintbrush, I know that there is no better place to be an artist than here.

Knee pain and exercise We have recently seen an increase in people reporting knee pain in our clinic. In most cases this is one of the many side effects of COVID 19 and people’s general reduced level of fitness and activity.

When it comes to preventing and treating knee pain, strength and control in our thigh muscles (quadriceps) and bottom muscles (gluteals) has been shown to be highly effective and is advised as the first line of treatment. With people reducing their activity level, in particular strength training, knee pain rates are rising. We can get away with reduced strength for a while without having any clinical effect on our body and our knees, but the gradual decline in strength can catch up with you.

X-ray changes and pain are poorly correlated with regard to pain levels in the body, including knees. In fact, people can have significant degenerative changes on knee X-ray and report no pain or loss in function. WORDS Jimmy, a keen fisherman, went regularly to the town’s local pier with two mates.

Once he got snagged on weeds and as he leaned over, cursing his misfortune, his false teeth fell into the river. He called to his friends what had happened.

Sympathising, they hatched a plot - they tied one of their false teeth to a line and secretly dropped them into the water.

One of them exclaimed, “Jimmy, we have your teeth!” Jimmy ran over, grabbed them and inserted them into his mouth.

“Nah,” he said, “these don’t fit,” and proceeded to throw them to the river.

Long ago I was teased; ‘Looks like someone flicked mud through a teastrainer on your face.’ They were referring to my freckles of course.

Childhood days of scorching sun and salty surf washed off my zinc cream, leaving the tell-tale signs of an unprotected face. This was the only sunscreen we used then. I tried to bleach my spotted face with lemon juice, as I batted the flies away. Over time the freckles faded. As I grew up, make-up came in handy. Hang on! I remember now, someone also said; ‘A face without freckles is like a sky without stars.’

Good Neighbours One of our Book Club members, ‘Helen’ (not her real name), has welcomed four international students who have fallen on desperate times, into her home, while her husband is also overseas. The unpredictability of life and how we choose to respond to it, shows in this one home.

Helen has been hosting people in her home for 17 years. Hospitality is a way of life for her. Feeling privileged to live there, she is keen to share her beautiful home with others. This ethos of hospitality and regard of all people as equally entitled, has deep roots in her Christian faith. She is quick to share her garden’s produce and any excess with others too. Her affiliation with Australian Homestay Network (AHN) led to a request to host international students needing Government-subsidised accommodation, where COVID-19 had dealt them a severe blow. In response, Helen welcomed four young men from Turkey and Nepal into her home recently!

Not only providing each one with their own room and access to the rest of the house and meals, Helen is also ‘mum’ to each one to a certain extent. When one student acquired some work in Chatswood, she appealed through local Lane Cove sources, to find him a bike to ride there (saving his bus fares). Several were offered, but the correct-sized one required repair.

Another good neighbour offered his repair services and later, subsequent instruction on fixing punctures. The combined neighbourly efforts have been successful, with this young man now riding to work each shift. Well done Lane Cove!

This local story reminds me of the Parable of the Good Samaritan found in the Bible, Luke 10: 25-37 (NRSV). The story asks the question: Who was the neighbour to the victim? The answer: ‘the one who showed him mercy’. Helen is quick to point out that these students ‘could have been me or my kids, or any one of us’. Hence, she and her neighbours responded as they would want to be treated. It’s heart-warming – and challenging - because there are many more who need help. Can you practically help too? As Japanese bombs descend on Darwin in 1942, Molly Hook, a motherless 12-year-old packs a duffle bag, escapes her abusive uncle and father, and sets off on a quest to reverse the curse that she believes besets her family. Molly’s family are gravediggers and goldminers and it is local legend that her grandfather’s “gold sickness” and greed resulted in a curse on his family by Longcoat Bob, a local Aboriginal elder. Despite the grim life she has led since her mother’s death, Molly has a persistent, infectious optimism. She is determined to find Longcoat Bob and demand that he lift the curse on her family before her heart “turns to stone” like so many in her family before her. On her journey, she collects travelling companions: Greta, an aspiring actress and Yukio, a Japanese fighter pilot lost in the Darwin hinterland.

Trent Dalton’s second novel All Our Shimmering Skies is a swashbuckling adventure set in the Northern Territory bushland. As Molly and her protectors journey into the “deep country” to find Longcoat Bob, they experience the exquisite, surreal beauty of the outback landscape and face a slew of dangers. They encounter wild buffalo, swim through crocodile-infested waters, battle with tin-mining “monsters” and face down the demon pursuing them. As Molly gamely leads her companions through a beautiful but terrifying wilderness, we perceive both the courage and the fecklessness of her quest. We also observe the loyalty and love she inspires in her companions.

Boy Swallows Universe was always going to be a hard act to follow but All Our Shimmering Skies is a worthy successor. The books share elements of style, character and theme. The vivid description, the central characters’ naïve optimism and elements of magic. They both weave beauty and mysticism into a gritty narrative of generational trauma rooted in mental illness, addiction and abuse. But Dalton’s latest novel is still a work that is new and different. It is an historical novel that brings to life a wartorn Darwin and the wonder of the Territory. It deals with the casual racism and unchecked domestic abuse of the time. The characters are lovable archetypes that defy caricature. Molly’s stalwart belief in the “good” in people and her blind faith in the power of her quest to cure her grief and ‘save her heart’ is heart-warming. Greta is a smart-alec, fast-talking actress who aspires to movie stardom but finds herself working in a bar and in an abusive relationship. But she is kind and loving and drawn to protect Molly. Yukio, also grieving and seeking death as a release, finds himself renewed by the kindness of Molly and the beauty of the Australian bushland. Even Aubrey Hook, Molly’s evil uncle is more than just a villain – he is well-read, intelligent and damaged.

This post-colonial metaphor for generational trauma is a uniquely Australian story of love, grief and the family that we find.

he aroma of freshly brewed arabica beans floated in the air across Karen’s cosy little kitchen.

She cupped her cold hands around her steaming mug and was reminded of happier days, filled with the joy of sharing with her partner, Joe. He loved sunshine, chocolate and coffee….and her, as he often told her. Now she lived in a one-bedder in St Kilda, with only her tortoiseshell Burmese stray, Benji, for company. He had brought her much comfort in the hellish time she had just been through since Joe had broken her heart, killed her trust, and returned to his wife and four year old daughter three months ago. Those nine months together had been so heady, so blissful, so full of hope.

How fortunes can change, she reflected. But, rather than sit and dwell on her more prosperous days in the advertising world – parties, conferences, pay reviews….the preCovid-19 world…. she would go out and brave the cold. Her recent $15 purchase of a black, bobbly woollen coat from her local St Vinnies shop was a comfort and the exercise would be a good distraction. She would squash thoughts of Joe and ignore the twist in her guts when she felt so angry that, at thirty-four, she had not put more behind her, saved when times were good.

The sky looked foreboding, and she dug her hands deep down into the pockets, when she heard a rustle of crackling paper. To her surprise, she dragged out a hand-written, watersmudged envelope. Inside, only part of the sender’s address on the letter was readable. The hand was neat, in italics.

Signed off by Alexander Chapman and written to Helen Marsh (the previous owner of the coat, Karen assumed) it seemed Alex had known about Helen twelve years earlier, but they had never met. Alex had been working in Dubai, as a Design Engineer. He wrote: ‘I can only apologise for my lack of care in acknowledging, before now, what a great help you were to my elderly parents before they died. They often spoke of their fondness for you, and the generous way you spent time in helping them with their smallholding in Yara Glen. I know it was you who

called an ambulance when my father suffered his first heart attack. I was young and selfish and so unaware of what was going on at home. I realise I neglected them. You, Helen, were more of a daughter to them than I was a son, for which I am ashamed.

You have been on my conscience for some time and I hired a Private Investigator to trace you. I am now a business owner, and I have lived in Dubai these past eight years; before that I had left home and moved up to Sydney. Now I’m home to sort out my parents’ old place, and I hope to

settle my debt to you, in person. I have something for you. Please call me on the number above. I look forward to hearing from you.’

Karen sat down, her mind spinning, taking in what she had just read. She strained her eyes, trying to make sense of the address on the envelope.

Google Maps came good and she rang the bell, butterflies in her tummy.

‘Excuse me, I wonder if you could help me? I’m looking for Helen Marsh.’ She was addressing a slight, Indian woman of around sixty, wearing a blue sari.

‘Oh yes, that was the lady here before us. She had to go back to England because of a family illness.’

‘Do you have a forwarding address I might share?’

‘No, sorry. I don’t know. Can’t help you. We’ve been here three years at Christmas.’

Karen mumbled her thanks. She had drawn a blank. It all seemed hopeless, until she realised she had not tried online for Alex’s profile. There was an idea. And, what about another one? Why could she not BE Helen?

He clearly had never met the real one. Any ‘tokens of his appreciation’ may as well be hers. Why not? Karen ignored the little voice in her head that reminded her she had never set out to deceive like this ever before. She argued back: I have never been this broke before!

Alex Chapman checked out on LinkedIn. Handsome, successful, he had indeed built a multi-million dollar manufacturing business from his industrial designs, in air conditioning for high rises. His reply to her email was warm, suggesting they meet.

He would book her a room at the local Mudgee Peppers Resort for three nights, from any Friday of her choosing; just be sure to bring along the letter, he asked. Excited, Karen poured herself a glass of merlot, and set about planning her next move.

The resort’s Reception had welcomed her as ‘Mr. Chapman’s guest, Ms Marsh’ and told her they had strict instructions to afford her room service across twenty-four hours, and to bill it all to him. Karen needed little encouragement.

Daily deliveries of fresh sandwiches, salads, special finger food packs with a range of pies, sausage rolls and cakes leave our building every day. Some prefer the snacks; others choose to heat up large meals.

The cost may be a little higher than a frozen meal at Aldi but the quality, variety and nutritional value far exceeds any supermarket alternative.

In 1961, Claudia persuaded Lane Cove Council to help her set up a new organisation called the ‘Pool of Service’ which went on to become Lane Cove Community Aid. 2020 has been a very difficult year for everybody Here at Sydney Community Services we have been running to keep up. From late January we were putting in place new guidelines and procedures to keep our clients, volunteers and staff safe and well.

Meals on Wheels has had a huge increase in clients.

People unwilling to go out have called on us to deliver meals to their homes. We remain completely reliant on our committed team of volunteers who have continued to turn up and assist us. We have provided full PPE training, face masks and hand sanitiser. Volunteers remain at a distance to ensure clients are well, and able to collect the delivery at the time.

Our linen service provides clean sheets and towels to those unable to make their beds alone.

Throughout the pandemic we have kept in touch with all our clients, offering emotional and practical support such as shopping, either in person or online. We have also offered advice, financial counselling and emergency food parcels. With the support of Harris Farms we have also been able to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to families in need, including women and children staying at Delvena Women’s Refuge.

We have had some additional financial support for Meals and Nursing but all other services have been funded through our own resources.

We hope you can donate funds to help us continue to provide these important services to our local community.

Hero of the Month: Bob Willis Proudly brought to you by Anthony Roberts, MP

B

ob Willis, 94, and client of Sydney Community Services, has led much of his life on water.

Prior to settling in Riverview and starting his family, Bob survived many perils on the high seas from getting stranded on a coral reef for 25 days to dealing with the threat of pirates along China’s coastline. Last December, he became a part of Australia’s war history for being part of the crew on a ship that transported suspected Japanese war criminals to Manus Island in 1949 for their trials.

Bob grew up in Smithtown near Kempsey, on the Macleay River.

Everything was transported by boats in those days and Bob decided from an early age that he was going to sea as an engineer on boats he had seen travelling up and down the river.

During World War II, Bob, then 16, came to Sydney to work as an apprentice, undertaking the steelwork to mount guns on ships. In 1948, after passing his engineering exams, he joined the crew of Inchmark, a ship built in 1912 that was falling apart.

He says that it was a great ship for learning because everything needed to be fixed on a regular basis. When the ship was stranded on coral reef on the open seas, Bob and his crewmates caught rain for water, went fishing and coconut picking on a nearby uninhabited island. Fortunately, he could send telegraphs to his parents to let them know he was alright.

Eventually the crew were rescued and taken to Hong Kong, but Inchmark was sadly left behind.

One of the ships Bob worked on was hired to transport suspected Japanese war criminals. “They thought we were going to kill them and throw them in the sea,” he recalls. Bob talks about the anger that flared up among some of the crew and the Australian soldiers on board. To dissipate the tension, the Japanese soldiers came up with a plan to put on a show with singing and dancing. “Some of them were very good singers,” Bob laughs.

Last December Bob and his son made the journey to Canberra’s Australian War Memorial where they were met by Stephanie Boyle, the curator. They recorded Bob’s recollections of transporting the Japanese soldiers and it has become an official part of the Australian war history archives.

Bob is a proud member, and an exchairman, of The Lane Cove Bowling and Recreation Club. Although it is temporarily closed, Bob urges locals to join the fun and festivities the club will have to offer once its doors re-open again. lanecovebowls.com.au/

Federal Government’s Budget Designed to Keep Australians in Jobs

T

he COVID-19 recession has been devastating to the Australian economy and employment and nearly all Australians have felt these impacts. This recession is the most severe global economic crisis since the great Depression.

In early October the federal government outlined its 2020 Federal Budget and the next phase of our Economic Recovery Plan which is designed to cushion the blow of the recession while supporting the recovery and rebuilding of our economy.

This was an unprecedented Budget for unprecedented times and essential to this is recognising that jobs are created by viable and successful businesses.

Our Economic Recovery Plan is designed to help the Australian economy fight back, get people back in jobs and save lives through our support for the health system.

The budget deploys a range of strategies: • tax relief for individuals and businesses to boost spending; • improved skills and training; • support for modern manufacturing here in Australia; • help for younger people and apprentices to re-enter the workforce; • a focus on science, technology and research and support for low emissions technology, which will support new economic opportunities.

At the same time, we are providing record funding for essential services like health, education and aged care.

While the impact has been hard, Australia has done better than most nations in responding to both the health and economic challenges.

Locally, the Budget will support improved infrastructure with Lane Cove Council to receive an additional $1.35 million for local roads and community infrastructure. Over $40 million has also been provided to improve the Sydney Harbour public foreshore land managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, including at Sub Base Platypus on Neutral Bay, the Woolwich Dock and Cockatoo Island.

In the June quarter, Australia’s economy contracted by 7 percent. This compares to 12 percent falls in New Zealand, 14 percent in France and 20 percent in the UK.

There remains a monumental task ahead and we will continue to support Australians in meeting both the health and economic consequences of this pandemic.

However, this doesn’t take away from the fact that Australians will continue to do it tough.

’m very excited to announce to the Lane Cove electorate that my beautiful wife Alicia and I will have celebrated the birth of our fourth child by the time of printing. We are entirely in the dark about whether it’s a boy or girl- but will let you know as soon as we do!

The previous month has been exceptionally busy with numerous projects opening.

I proudly opened to the public another automated recycling depot with my colleague, Minister Kean. This is the second depot to be added in Lane Cove under the return and earn recycling policy scheme, which was introduced by this Government in 2017. This depot will assist in contributing towards the largest existing litter reduction scheme that has ever been introduced in NSW and will help meet this Government’s 40% litter reduction goals. The response to this initiative within the community has been immense, with already one million returned containers having being processed through our initial Little Street return-point location, which was launched less than a year ago. This return and earn station has the added capacity of being able to process bottles in bulk, so you can now avoid processing them individually.

Additionally, North Shore Rowing Club celebrated a number of new facilities as well as further progress towards a new boatshed. The project will upgrade its boat storage and provide space for members to exercise off-water thanks to almost $620,000 in NSW Government funding. Once completed, the project will enable the club to store up to 40 boats with direct water access to Lane Cove River. Sport is a vital part of the Lane Cove community, and the upgrade to North Shore Rowing Club will enable residents to enjoy the benefits of regular activity and exercise in our beautiful surrounds on the Lane Cove River.

A number of you will have completed the bulk of your HSC exams. I want to congratulate year 12 students for persevering through a challenging year, and emphasise that HSC results are certainly not the be-all and end-all.

Life will have plenty of twists and turns, and there are innumerable successful people within our electorate who did not receive the grades they may have hoped.

It’s a stunning result after several months of refurbishment to the Council administration building and provides improved access for our community, including a new entry point through the Town Hall front doors. Our customer service staff look forward to serving you in this new setting, with the appropriate COVID-19 safety plan in place. We also offer online services to make doing business with us even easier. For the non-tech savvy, we have a self-serve kiosk in the new reception area and our staff are happy to assist you with our online services, so please do drop in.

Road safety

Promoting road safety, in partnership with the State Government, is an important part of the work we do as a Council. This extends to programs offered directly to our community, including two that are available to residents during November. We are offering free child car seat fitting vouchers to people who live in the Hunter’s Hill Council area. A voucher entitles the recipient to have a restraint checked, refitted or fully fitted by a designated local Authorised Restraint Fitter, until 29 November. For those looking to educate the next generation of drivers, we are offering assistance by way of a free Teaching Your Learner Driver Workshop on 26 November.

A warm rapport was soon established amidst the elegant, modern surroundings. Good food, chilled Chablis and a charming, well-spoken man who was interested in her, gave Karen hope that her luck had changed.
