JULY 2018

This month I would like to celebrate Council’s program of cultural events, focussing on the creative arts. Last month Council held its annual Captured Photography event. This year we held a photography workshop at Council’s Synergy Youth Centre. This encouraged some fantastic entries in the youth category of the competition. This month Council will be holding writing workshops at the Library to encourage entries for our annual Literary Awards. Entries this year are in the short story, theatre script and poetry categories. Winning entries are published in an annual anthology which makes for great reading. This year will mark the 55th year of Council’s Lane Cove Art Award which is held as part of the launch of the Lane Cove Festival in August. Successful Art Award entries are exhibited at Gallery Lane Cove, another of Council’s facilities. The lower floors of the Gallery building were recently fitted out to host Lane Cove Creative Studios (formerly Centrehouse Inc), becoming a unique creative hub in Lane Cove and the first of its kind on the North Shore. Council is pleased to support such high quality events and facilities in Lane Cove as part of our cultural program. And a special thankyou to the wonderful creative groups in our community who assist Council with its cultural program.

Bush Boardwalk Installation

Council has recently installed a new boardwalk to connect two sections of the Stringybark Creek bushwalk track underneath the Epping Road bridge, near Sam Johnson Way. The Fibreglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) boardwalk helps to address issues created by stormwater runoff as well as greatly improving the impact of bush regenerators and local bushcare volunteers who actively work in the area. The reserve is also part of the Great North Walk and home to endangered fauna species such as the Powerful Owl and Grey Headed Flying Fox.

Calling Le Vesinet exchange students and families

Thirty years ago when Hunters Hill was celebrating the bicentenary of Australia, it formed an association with old Europe, the birthplace of a number of our past and present residents. On that occasion, Council expressed the desire to secure a link with Le Vesinet in France.

The 30th Anniversary of the signing of the Hunters Hill - Le Vesinet Friendship Pact will be celebrated with a dinner to farewell the French students visiting Australia and to acknowledge the friendship between Le Vesinet and Hunters Hill. The dinner will be held on August 9th at the Hunters Hill Club. RSVP is essential on www.trybooking.com/381331. Further information is available from Gael Czinner- czinner@ozemail. com.au.

Moocooboola Festival

Planning is well underway for the 2018 Moocooboola Festival, which will commence at 10am on Sunday 5th August at Boronia Park. This annual festival has something for everyone with entertainment, rides, a dog show, a delicious selection of food, a market bazaar, community information stalls and so much more. For information about stallholders or other details, please contact Council’s Events Coordinator on 9879 9432 or email community@huntershill.nsw.gov.au to register your interest.

Camp Management Plan

Hunter’s Hill Council is preparing a Camp Management Plan for the Tarban Creek Grey-headed Flying-fox camp to help guide its future management.

Community feedback will assist Council to develop this Management Plan. Council is seeking community views on both the impacts of the flying-fox camp and the outcomes people hope that management of the camp will achieve.

Extensive consultation is planned and there are a number of ways for residents, park users and stakeholders to become involved. If you are interested in the future of the Tarban Creek Grey-headed Flying-fox colony, please complete the online survey at www.huntershill.nsw.gov.au/flyingfox

One size fits all approach significantly undermines local character

Lot size, floor space, landscaped area, setback controls and storey controls determine the local character of an area. Recent changes to the statewide Low-Rise Medium Density Housing Code simply cannot address all the permutations of individual area controls.

The impact on local character will be significant and Council has written to the Minister for Planning, the Hon. Anthony Roberts MP, advising that it is concerned about the expanded enforcement duties that all councils will be expected to undertake and the lack of consultation/education surrounding this change, requesting that Council seek an ongoing exemption from the Code. $1M provided for new Lane Cove Park

Ever since I became Minister for Planning and Housing a year and a half ago, one of my main aims was the greening of Sydney – providing our communities with parks and open spaces.

The importance of this is without doubt. Parks and open spaces provide liveability, a place to play, relax, muse and meet.

To ensure this policy of providing communities with such important facilities, last October I announced the appointment of the State’s first ever Open Space and Parks Coordinator, landscape expert Fiona Morrison.

There has been a major win in this regard for the residents of Lane Cove, with the NSW Government’s $1 million injection to establish a new park in the area.

This funding is part of the ‘Acceleration of Open Space Program’ and our $1 million contribution will be spent entirely on the design and construction of the 6300-square metre Mindarie Park in Lane Cove North.

Mindarie Park will be part of the proposed new Mowbray Precinct Plan, with Lane Cove Council undertaking community consultation for the concept design in late 2017.

Council must be congratulated for acquiring six lots in Pinaroo Place from the NSW Land and Housing as part of an agreement that includes the transfer of Council land at Girraween Reserve.

As a result of the agreement, Council will be able to provide recreation space utilising the six lots in Pinaroo Place, the Pinaroo Place cul-de-sac and the existing park on Kullah Parade.

The community was encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed design which currently includes the following features: 1. Off-street parking 2. Table tennis 3. Play equipment 4. Full size basketball court 5. All abilities access toilet block 6. Serpentine walking path 7. Multi use open lawn area 8. Meeting circle/outdoor classroom 9. Multi use platform/stage 10. Picnic shelter, table setting and barbeque 11. Pump track for skateboards, scooters and bikes 12. Multi use games area 13. New turning facility 14. Potential community garden

I have no doubt that this new park, with such wonderful facilities, will become a focal point and source of pride to our community and will encourage both physical and passive usage and enjoyment.

Parks and open spaces is an important part of the NSW Government’s planning strategy.

Recently we announced a $290 million Open Spaces and Greener Sydney package, including $100 million to secure strategic green space; $20 million to build more than 200 new or upgraded playgrounds; and $30 million to open up 81 school ovals and playgrounds for public use during school holidays.

We also announced an initiative to plant five million native trees in NSW with an initial $37.5 million in funding over four years.

I want to make sure that trees and canopy are a vital part of the city’s growth areas and major projects. Green open space is a fundamental element of planning for communities.

Lane Cove Seniors Forum

It was wonderful to see so many people attend the Lane Cove Seniors Forum and morning tea on 14th June at the Lane Cove Golf Club. This is the second forum I have hosted for seniors in the Lane Cove area. These events are a great opportunity to hear directly from the community. Some of the local issues included congestion, the implications of a growing population and how we can help the environment. Other important matters raised included energy and energy security, tertiary and vocational education and foreign aid.

The Turnbull Government is committed to supporting older Australians to help them live healthier, more independent and safer lives. In the recent Federal Budget, new commitments included $1.6 billion to support 14,000 additional high-level home care packages and $82.5 million for mental health services for people in residential aged care facilities, extending the Pension Work Bonus and the Pension Loans Scheme. The government has also announced that it will create a new Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and is working with the States and Territories to develop a national online register for enduring powers of attorney.

Mater PET Scanner

It was a great privilege to join the team at Mater Imaging to officially open their new PET-CT imaging centre. Mater Imaging commissioned a new PET-CT imaging department in response to increasing demand from both patients and referrers in the North Sydney catchment area to improve access and affordability to this modality.

PET-CT is the “gold standard” imaging modality and test for the diagnosis, staging and monitoring of many oncological and neurodegenerative diseases. Mater Imaging works collaboratively with other institutions to improve management and health outcomes for patients in our local community.

Opening of Lane Cove Creative Studio

On Saturday 23rd June, I joined Lane Cove Mayor Clr Pam Palmer for the opening of the Lane Cove Creative Studios.

This was a great opportunity to visit the new facilities, engage with different forms of art making through demonstrations and drop-in activities and meet the new artist-in-residence, Travis De Vries.

This will be a great new facility and I congratulate Lane Cove Council on this impressive initiative.

School Leaders Lunch

I recently hosted school leaders from our local secondary schools for lunch in the NSW Parliament.

School captains and student leaders play a vital role in the life of the school community. Becoming a school captain or vice-captain is an honour, but also requires a considerable commitment during all the pressures of year 12. The 20 student leaders I met with were an impressive group of young men and women and reflect the quality of our local high schools.

This year students raised with me issues ranging from women in STEM through to climate change. A common theme was a hope for more civility and consensus in Australian politics – something I have conveyed to my colleagues in the House of Representatives.
