‘TO BE’ THEATRE OR ‘NOT TO BE’

I do not mean this is in a new age meme way but in the sense that when people work together to create art on stage you, as an actor, are essentially playing at God. You create life, you end life, you live life.

You bring meaning to words on a page and give a purpose to the characters and are your own innovator when it comes to the way these people live their lives.

Life is a chain and in this chain we make choices; we fall in love, we fall out of love, we work, we play and we forge relationships with the people we meet.

Now when you look at real life outside of the stage, one does not really get to decide where life takes them but in the theater it is up to you, your fellow actors and your director.

This part of acting always got me.

The idea that, while the outside world was chaotic and uncontrollable, I could have a hand in creating different worlds for people to see was always inviting to me.

Then that idea moved from thought to S. practice.

Getting on stage for the first time, I felt godly. I felt every bit the omnipotent being I had envisioned in my head and I truly felt the weight of the world I had created.

I have always felt odd calling acting my “art.” Part of that being that I feel silly calling myself an artist. The other part being that it has never felt like art to me.

It has felt like breathing fully, like being alive, like an extension of myself.

But never art.

I think that I always had an idea of what art was and for that to be challenged and for that idea to change the way I perform, shook me.

I started seeing my movements like strokes on a page, my words adding color to the scenes and my emotion hopefully evoking something beautiful within the audiences.

I started to think like an artist and perform like I was one too.

New Year resolutions lack consistency

With 2017 around the corner people around the world are beginning to plan the ultimate resolution; however will anyone consistently achieve their resolution in the coming weeks?

I

believe that all humans on this green earth are constantly changing on a day-to-day basis.

Whether it is a positive or negative change, an improvement or a slip-up, I am not the same person I was yesterday and neither are you.

Now this does not mean we do not have our long-standing morals or bad habits, like if the sun is not shining neither am I or waiting until the last minute to write a paper.

I am forced to ask myself, do we not want to improve ourselves?

Is this a basic human want to end the week better than where we started?

To learn and to grow makes us feel productive and important, like we are all really making a difference and are a part of the world as a whole.

Consistency and keeping organized can also help build back trust.

“If they stick to a promise [and say] that they are going to be there, it can be really helpful if they are reliable in that way and follow through. A lot of survivors also might feel powerlessness; they have had their power taken away from them in a really impactful way,” Taylor said. “Something that communities can do to help rebuild their power is to make sure they are in the driver’s seat when it comes to their own healing process.”

Sexual assault betrays a victim’s trust and can lead to emotional and mental damage. Survivors may be unable to block out unwanted thoughts and may suffer from very expressive emotions, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC). Along with trust issues, this can lead to an inability to form relationships.

“One major perspective in psychology, known as psychodynamic theory, formulated by Sigmund Freud, might argue that victims of trauma tend to have a difficult time forming healthy relationships in the future.

Their sense of trust might be affected and their world view or what they consider ‘normal’ might actually be related to their trauma and thus they might enter into relationships that end up increasing the chance of being victimized again,” Gendron said.

According to Taylor, consent should be given in healthy and equal relationships, as in no person has power over the other. It should also be done respectfully and in a sober manner.

Often times student are taught ‘no means no’ but the focus should be geared toward “yes” statements.Yes means yes is how Taylor personally defines consent.

ith only a few days left until the holidays begin, students are worrying about what to do this holiday season and setting budgets to do certain activities.

Family size can affect a holiday budget greatly. Junior Shelby Adams, who comes from a large family, believes that setting budgets around the holidays is important, especially if there is large amount of people you need to buy for.

“I think holiday budgets are important because you do not want to spend too much. Also, if you are buying a gift for a whole bunch of people, you do not want to go over your budget,” Adams said. “You want to make it as even as possible. I do not want spend $50 on one person and only spend $3 on the next.”

With the Holidays right around the corner, there is spending happening left and right. While it may be hard to keep things in line, Adams believes that setting a budget is key to staying organized.

“I think it is important to set a budget because it keeps things organized. You do not know where your money went and it is also important to write down how much money you spent if you are not using a credit card and just have cash on you,” Adams said.

Holiday season brings a slew of winter themed activities.

Junior Halle Fladager believes having the funds to enjoy said activities is essential for the holiday season.

“Going out and doing activities like ice skating and seeing Christmas lights require money, so having enough funds is needed to have the holiday season work,” Fladager said.

“Buying a Christmas tree and ornaments to put on your tree are expensive.”

Not only will a budget keep you organized but having said budget will help keep you from going broke. Each person’s budget will vary from person to person depending on family size or number of activities they will participate in during the winter season.

“For the holidays, you do not want to go bankrupt and spend a lot of money. Your budget depends on your family size,” Adams said.

Another Tim Allen holiday movie to watch after all of the “Santa Clause” movies, Jamie Lee Curtis also stars in “Christmas with the Kranks” as this lighthearted family decides to skip Christmas after their daughter leaves for college, to their neighborhoods dismay. This story is one to watch with the family and will have you laughing along with the Kranks from beginning to end.

I laughed at the inside jokes between Nadine and Krista and felt the pain when they fought.

There were definitely some concepts and storylines that were very specific to the plot, so in some ways I could not relate, such as my friend choosing my brother over me. However, the story was told in a way that while I could not connect with that exact situation, I understood Nadine’s frustration and inability to handle it.

Overall, this was a must see for anyone on the edge of 17 or on the edge of 27.

adoring connections between Logan and Rory were all present along with all of the other dynamics viewers have grown to know and love.

Upon seeing how Rory’s character has evolved since leaving off at the end of the series, I was quite disappointed with her lack of ambition and direction, very different from what her character has displayed in the past seasons. I had hoped to see Rory tearing it up in her writing career and instead she spent most of the episodes chasing after empty opportunities and second guessing herself.

Overall, the nine year gap for the cast in performing their roles proved to have a minimal effect on their characters; each one was exquisitely matching their past performances in their roles.

Whether you are a longtime fan or new to the series and the revival, catching up with the Gilmore girls and their adventures in Stars Hollow and beyond will leave you with a feeling of friendship and a smile on your face.

Sports Column I never would have thought that something as simple as a piece of paper from my third grade teacher would turn into something that not only has defined my life but my entire family’s life as well.
