Hello friends! Welcome spring!

We’re so glad to see our spring decorations, green grass, budding trees, and daffodils! It feels like it’s been an especially long winter and every sunny day is a blessing.

Business in Sweetwater is in full swing. Already in 2021, we have 9 new businesses opening and sales taxes have hit alltime highs. Our small economy is quickly recovering. One area we still show lagging in recovery is our local restaurants.

I would like to encourage you all to support local restaurants.

Be patient as they struggle to find workers and support them by eating in, ordering takeout, and giving good reviews on social media.

You can join us on Tuesdays, historically the slowest days for restaurants, for Takeout Tuesdays. This is a national Shop Small promotion to remind people to support small restaurants.

We’re making plans for the warmer months including reopening our Splash Pad on May 15th- it’s free and located in beautiful Engleman Park on Monroe Street.

We plan on reopening the city pool on May 21st. We also have our Blooms Bluegrass, and BBQ festival plans underway for May 7-8th. This is a great event for families and friends.

In between events, we hope you utilize our picnic and parks areas, and trails and paths, and enjoy the natural beauty of our area.

Have company coming? Invite them to try one of the new air bed and breakfasts in town. Oak Street Orleans and The Carriage House are open and available and the Remedies Inn is coming soon! Or utilize one of our wonderful hotels.

We are truly blessed to live in this wonderful community.

We have great businesses, great natural resources, and great people here who care about each other.

I’m looking forward to seeing you all out and about this spring and summer- living life and enjoying the rebirth that spring brings.

Microchips are available for $10 at the shelter during normal business hours. Please make sure your pets are chipped, have collars and tags with your current contact information. Make sure your information on the microchip website is also always current and update the pets’ pictures as needed. Be sure you always have a good picture of your pet in case you need it. If you have lost or found a pet, please contact the shelter immediately and post to the TN Monroe County Animal Shelter Facebook page (with a picture) You must go to the shelter every day or every other day to see if someone has turned in your pet. The stray hold-time goes very quickly and your pet could be adopted out after the stray hold. The shelter will not release adoption information if your pet gets

Yes, you can also take it to a vet to be scanned for a chip but they do not have access to lost pet reports. If you take it to a vet and no chip is found, please still report the found pet to the shelter-with a location found and a good picture.

store owner, miller, fertilizer dealer and a parttime mailman.

“He was a busy guy,” she said.

Brenda’s parents reared five children on the farm including her older sister, the late Theresa Stafford, two younger brothers; the late Jerry Thomas and Larry Thomas, and a younger sister, Frieda Brown.

Larry and Frieda continue to maintain homes on the farm in their retirement.

Brenda graduated from Sweetwater High School, where she played every year on the girls’ basketball team, in 1962. When it came time to chose a career, she initially decided that she wasn’t going to follow her mother’s footsteps into teaching, simply because several women in her family, including an older sister, were also teachers.

“So, I always said that I was not going to be a teacher, I am going to do something else—I just didn’t know what that something else was,” Brenda said.

She felt that time spent studying at Tennessee Wesleyan would help her make up her mind and she enrolled there. (continued) n Oriental proverb proclaims that if you choose a job you love, you will never “work” a day in your life. Brenda Lee, a retired educator, can attest to the truth of this ancient adage.

“I had a friend who told me that when I opened this shop my time would be fully consumed, but I told her that this is not a job—this is my passion,” said Brenda, proprietor of Stone Cottage Shops & Gardens Antiques in Tellico Plains.

She has always loved antiques and growing up on a farm on the outskirts of Sweetwater helped instill in her a passion for horticulture that she has cultivated into a career.

“I was raised on a 200-acre farm, so I was always a farm girl. That’s where I got my gardening,” she said. “My mother was always a plant-person; she was always planting shrubs and flowers, that kind of thing.”

Brenda’s mother, the late Lelia Thomas, was also a teacher at a two-room schoolhouse in Paint Rock.

After earning enough college credits for a temporary teaching certificate, still without a clear career path in mind, she took a job teaching fourth grade at Eaton Crossroads in Lenoir City.

“I decided that I would teach there until I could figure out what I really wanted to do,” she said.

After teaching a couple of years in Lenoir City while continuing to go to college, Brenda transferred to the University of Tennessee, where she pursued a degree in Political Science with a minor in English.

After graduating from UT, Brenda began to change her mind about a career in education.

“I thought, hey, I know how this works and it’s comfortable to me, so I might as well teach,” she said.

She was offered to teach Middle School, seventh and eighth grades, at Eaton as well as to coach girls’ basketball and agreed to take the job for a year.

“It was interesting that the first group that I taught in fourth grade were now seventh graders, so I got to teach the same group again’” she said.

She earned a Master’s Degree in Education from UT in 1969 and married Garland Lee, a farmer from Lenoir City, just two weeks later. It wasn’t easy to plan a wedding while simultaneously finishing her schooling.

“My mother would always say ‘You always attempt the impossible. Thing is, you usually achieve it,’” Brenda said.

These days, Garland, who is also a retired Fire Marshall, is an Angus beef farmer and owner of the 90acre Longview Farms on the outskirts of Sweetwater.

After her stint at Eaton, Brenda took a job at Greenback High School, where she would remain for the next 18 years, teaching a plethora of subjects including American History, American Government, English, Economics and Phycology.

In 1976, Brenda was elected as a delegate for the Tennessee 1977 Constitutional Convention, which was held to decide on amendments to the existing state constitution.

The convention was the broadest call for changes since the original writing of the constitution in 1870 10

and is the last time the state has held a constitutional convention.

Among changes called for were long-unenforceable, provisions such as those banning interracial marriage, school desegregation, exclusion of women from serving in the armed forces as well as a proposal to create a state income tax for Tennessee, which was rejected.

An overhaul of the state judiciary was also on the agenda and Brenda was chosen to be on the committee that would hash out the proposed changes.

The committee was, at first, made entirely of men who were attorneys and it was decided that bringing a female teacher on board would give needed versatility.

“Some people began to complain that there wasn’t good representation and we needed a non-attorney on the committee,” Brenda said.

There were other advantages to having Brenda around when it came time to draft the proposal.

“They liked that I was a teacher, so they used me as a grammarian,” Brenda added.

There might have been a little confusion when people in Nashville learned that “Brenda Lee” was serving as a member of the convention and assumed that the popular country music star of the same name had gotten involved in state politics.

They soon learned, of course, that it was a different Brenda Lee, but the star’s mother-in-law was a delegate from Nashville.

“When I served in the constitutional convention, one of the delegates from Nashville was Brenda Lee’s mother-in-law. She brought Brenda Lee’s daughter, who was 12 years old, to the convention one day and she was the same age that Brenda had been when she was singing on TV,” Brenda said.

The star Brenda Lee is the same age as Brenda and confusion that she might be “Little Miss Dynamite” has served her well more than once instance, she said.

“It has proved helpful to me a few times. I’ve come through the airport when I was out of the country and they would look at my passport and say’ ‘Oh, Brenda Lee, welcome!’ and I didn’t have to go

Brenda believes, because they were too complicated for the public to understand. She still regards her time serving on the 1977 Tennessee Constitutional Convention as an honor and more honors were to come.

During Brenda’s last year teaching at Greenback, in 1986, she was one of 49 teachers selected as a member of the National Geographic Alliance Program. Seven teachers from seven states chosen that year, the program’s first year, were sent to Washington D.C. to initiate the educational outreach.

The program is comprised of groups of educators united to support geographic literacy through partnerships between university faculty members and K-12 educators.

These state-based organizations connect educators, provide world-class professional development and promote educational innovation at the state, district and local levels.

The following year, Brenda took a job at Loudon High School, where she taught American Government and Economics. Having taught school for over 30 years, she decided to retire in 1995, after eight years at Loudon High.

“I decided that as soon as I was eligible to retire, I was going to retire and have another life,” Brenda said. “When you teach school, that is your life.”

A proposed amendment would repeal the 1870 constitution’s requirement that judges be elected in favor of a provision stating that “Justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the Court of Appeals shall be appointed by the Governor from three nominees recommended... by the Appellate Court Nominating Commission.... The name of each justice and judge seeking retention shall be submitted to the qualified voters for retention or rejection... at the expiration of each six-year term."

As a member of the constitutional convention, Brenda had to work in Nashville from Mondays to Thursdays every week from August to shortly before the end of December 1977. During that time she took a leave of absence from her teaching job at Greenback High.

“We tried to get done by Christmas and barely made it,” she said. “Nobody got any Christmas shopping done.”

In the end, the changes to the judiciary were rejected in a special election held on March 7, 1978, to ratify the amendments. Such sweeping changes were voted down,

About the same time Brenda finished teaching at Loudon High, however, she got a call from a geography professor at UT, who wanted her to be one of three teachers from across the state to spearhead a new litter control program that was part of the federal “Keep America Beautiful” initiative.

“For the next 12 years, I was talking trash in Tennessee,” she said.

Brenda continued her work with the National Geographic Alliance, along with her environmental work until 2007.

In 1999, Brenda made a stop by the Tellico Arts Center on a trip to teach Tellico Plains Middle School students and was encouraged by the former director, Sandra Pyron, to turn her love of gardening to a business by opening a botanical shop in town. The idea was intriguing but didn’t seem very practical at first. Brenda just had too many irons in the fire.

“I was not retired yet and was taking trips to New Jersey to care for my aunt who had terminal cancer and I was spending my summers on the Jersey Shore,” she said.

As Brenda left the Arts Center in Downtown Tellico Plains, however, something caught her eye that started her thinking differently.

“I was driving to turn around and I saw this rockhouse. I have always loved rock-houses and I’ve always loved the bungalow style, so I went back to the arts center and said, ‘Tell me about that rock-house up the street,” she said. “I knew when I saw this house that it was going to be mine.”

She found out that it was owned by a man who never lived there, but planned to renovate it and sell it.

Brenda wrote him a letter to see if an arrangement could be made for her to buy the house. Before long, Brenda was the owner of the quaint bungalow that now houses Stone Cottage Shops & Gardens.

Although she is no longer an “official” teacher, she is still educating customers on Tellico Plains history and antiques as well as gardening. Her interest in the environment and history is sustained by her involvement in the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association, which she has been a member of for the last 20 years.

Shops & Gardens, which is open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Wednesdays and Sundays. You might find her there creating a botanical wreath or herbal weaving or bringing beautiful finishes to a shine on one of many of the historic furniture pieces in her shop.

“I love being in this house, it has a good feel about it. When I was renovating it, I had offers to buy it, but it was no, no way—not for any money,” Brenda said. “This house brings people in; they just stop and, when the gardens are in season, they just take pictures of the gardens and come in to look at the house and still want to buy it from me or ask if I do a bedand-breakfast and if they can stay all night. I tell them no, that’s more work than I want to do.”

She will always be a teacher, she said, only now she is teaching others about interests very close to her heart.

“Teaching was a challenging and demand career, but it also gave an outlet for my creative instincts. These days, I am able to work at a job where I can express myself creatively every day and also teach others who share my passions.”

For each of us—rich or poor, young or old—there are times in our lives when we must face and deal with personal losses, along with the pain and sorrow that they cause.

Examples that come easily to mind are the death of a parent, spouse, child, or other close family member or friend. These can be some of the hardest times in life.

The capacity to love brings the necessity to grieve when someone you love dies. You can’t heal unless you openly express your grief.

Be patient and tolerant with yourself.

Losses like these are simply a part of life—they are part of what it means to share the human experience.

The emotions they create in us are part of living, as well. It’s important to be surrounded by family and friends who understand.

He is Risen!

B

ack in the 1880s Nietzsche declared that “God is dead,” and before the turn of the 20th Century, Shaw and Wells chimed in saying that the 20th Century would mark the end of the world's “religious phase.”

Yet, today a church now meets in Russia's Museum of Religion and Atheism – the former center of atheism. Nearly half of the United States’ population attend worship on a regular basis while revival is sweeping through Latin America and Christianity grows behind China's iron curtain.

Nietzsche, Shaw and Wells have long since decayed in their graves, and God continues to live!

That's the message of Easter.

He is risen. He is risen, indeed!

the Gospel. The Muslim regards both Muhammad and Christ as prophets of God. But whereas Muhammad lived and died and passed from the scene of history, Jesus lived, died, and arose!

Muhammad died, and was buried. His faithful followers take pilgrimages to visit his remains, the same is true of Buddha and other religious leaders. But it is not true of Jesus.

You cannot visit his remains, you can only visit his empty grave, because He isn't there. He Arose!

This side of history, we understand that Jesus' death was necessary. Without His death, there could be no resurrection. At the cross, He laid down His life for us. He willingly gave His all.

But how did his friends that He laid His life down for view the cross? One answer to that question would be, “from a distance.”

Except for John, they weren't there. The cross was the ultimate symbol of shame. It was reserved for vile criminals. The disciple's teacher, the one they left home to follow, was hung on a cross, and when He was, they turned their back on Him. No doubt they viewed the cross as shameful. Perhaps they even began to question the wisdom of their decision to follow him.

Disappointed? Certainly. Afraid? Perhaps.

Why do we believe? Recently an African Muslim was converted to Christ. When someone asked him why he had become a Christian, he answered. “Well, it's like this. Suppose you were going down a road when suddenly it forked in two directions, you didn't know which way to take.

There at the fork in the road you could see two persons, one dead and one alive. Of which one would inquire the way?”

The crowd was out of control. Did they know if they were safe? Could the soldiers come and take them away as they took Jesus away? Then it happened! Jesus broke through the chains of death and arose from the grave. He appeared to the woman at the empty tomb and gave the word to tell the disciples. Later, he appeared before the disciples, but Thomas wasn't there.

apostles’ testimony.

see, and yet believed.”

He'd heard about the vicious way they'd driven the nails in his hands instead of tying them to the cross, and he'd heard the way the soldiers stabbed him in the side with a spear, like a piece of meat.

That's you and me!

His anger and his doubt blended to become a toxic cocktail of bitterness, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.”

Do you blame him? His hopes and dreams dashed, Thomas was drowning in depression and doubt –no way he could believe the unbelievable.

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them.

We've not seen, and yet we believe. We believe, because He loved us. The scripture says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

A volunteer at a hospital, was present when a little boy decided to give the ultimate sacrifice because he loved his sister.

The volunteer says the little girl was dying of a rare disease, with only one chance for survival – a blood transfusion from her five-year-old brother.

After the doctor explained what would happen during the transfusion, the little boy agreed to give his blood to save his sister. He peacefully laid still during the transfusion.

After a while, he asked the doctor a question that gave great insight into his character, “Will I start to die right away?”

Apparently, the boy thought he would have to give all his blood, but was willing to do so to save his sister.

Jesus laid down His life for you. There is room at the cross for you. Will you come to him? May you all be blessed this Easter season, for we serve a risen Savior!

Sanctuary owner does it all '4Them'

ucked away off a rural Sweetwater road is a place where dozens of animals live and thrive at “4Them Animal Sanctuary,” a refuge created specifically for abused, abandoned and sick animals.

Leslie Naylor, owner of the 21-acre farm, is living the dream that she nurtured for years before destiny brought it to fruition for the chickens, cows, goats, pigs, dogs and cats who Naylor calls her family.

She has given names to most of her animals, including a blind rooster named “Roo,” who loves being held and petted. There is Mo the cow, goats named Moose and Westley, a pig named Trucker and a sheep named Karma. One thing is for certain, you will never find one of Naylor’s pets as a menu item in her kitchen. Naylor is a devoted vegan and any animal who comes to her farm is either re-homed or stays on her farm until they live out their life and pass away.

“Most of my animals are brought to me because they have been abused, left to die by their owners or they are strays,” said Naylor.

Her rescue story began by simply saving cats and dogs.

Things evolved naturally after she decided to become a vegan, eating only a meat or meat by-product-free life.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 39 years old,” said Naylor, 50. “After surgery and chemotherapy, I made a personal choice to omit meat from my diet because I felt it would help to improve my health. Soon, it wasn’t only about me, it became all about the animals.”

In 2017, Naylor was living in Knoxville where she opened a Sanctuary Vegan Café. All tips that were made at the café went directly to a dream fund. Moving closer to that dream, she purchased 21 acres in Sweetwater in Dec. 2018. Animal rescuing began one month later. Due to Covid-19, she closed the café in March 2020, then was able to spend all of her time building her sanctuary.

As 4Them grows, volunteer help has become crucial to Naylor’s success, giving her the ability to complete all the chores daily.

“I have about 10 faithful volunteers who try to come out every week,” said Naylor. “I don’t know what I’d do without them, they keep us going. There is so much work.

Tony Amos and Sandie Tripp are in their second-year as volunteers for Naylor. They faithfully travel from Chattanooga each week. Young missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Athens volunteer for Naylor weekly. Recently, they helped install a new pig fence.

“When I serve at 4Them, it makes me so happy to get to see the cute animals and hear Leslie tell us their stories,” said missionary Stephanie Goldbaum, a native Californian. “Her love is evident because of the work she puts in to keep up with the sanctuary and care for the animals no matter what. I am grateful for her kindness she has shown towards me.”

4Them is a 501C 3 non-profit that is overseen by a board of directors. Naylor relies on monetary donations as well as volunteers. Presently, she is searching for a parttime ranch hand.

Items that are always needed and appreciated on the farm include: Dog, cat food and produce, tools and fencing material, wheelbarrows, pitchforks, hoses, wood, straw and hay, said Naylor.

Naylor works closely with volunteers who need to complete service hours as a requirement for schools, organizations, or companies.
