Sesquicentennial Commemoration
South Mountain in the Gettysburg Campaign of 1863 THE MOUNTAIN’S STRATEGIC GAPS ONCE AGAIN SEE NORTH AND SOUTH CLASH. n May of 1863, following his victory over the Union Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville, Va., Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee began preparations to invade the North for the second time in nine months. At the outset Lee would move his Army of Northern Virginia into the Shenandoah Valley, which would provide a natural thoroughfare to the Potomac River. Once in Maryland, South Mountain would provide a “screen” behind which Lee’s Army could move, relatively unnoticed, into Pennsylvania. On June 3 the reorganized, re-equipped and reinforced Confederate Army began moving toward the valley. Union Gen. Joseph Hooker, commander of the Army of the Potomac, was slow to react. Not sure what Lee was up to, Hooker did not begin his pursuit until June 14. After Union cavalry fought several skirmishes with Confederate cavalry in Northern Virginia, Hooker began moving his army across the Potomac River toward Middletown and Frederick, Md. By this time elements of Lee’s

army were already in Pennsylvania. South Mountain in Maryland now became a focal point. The mountain still screened the Confederate army, and the same gaps — Turner’s, Fox’s and Crampton’s — that had seen the Battle of South Mountain in September of 1862 provided the doors through which the Union Army could finally see them. Union troops were sent to occupy the gaps and to hopefully answer some questions. Were the Confederates going to use the gaps to move directly on Washington, and had they already occupied the gaps? If the gaps were already occupied by the Confederates, would there be a repeat of the battle in September? Fortunately, the gaps were not occupied, and Union forces occupied them unopposed. They were now, for the first time since early June, able to see the Confederates as they moved north through the valley around Hagerstown. Gen. Hooker, due to his sluggish pursuit of the Confederates and constant disputes with his superiors, was relieved of THE VALLEY REVUE

command of the Army of the Potomac. On June 28 at Frederick, Md., Gen. George Meade was appointed to replace him. With it becoming apparent that Lee was moving his entire army into Pennsylvania, Meade ordered the Army of the Potomac to concentrate and head north. This included pulling Union troops out of the gaps of South Mountain. On July 1–3 the epic battle of Gettysburg was fought. Lee’s army was defeated and forced to retreat. Once more he would cross South Mountain and move south, since this was the shortest route back to Virginia and would possibly keep the mountain between his army and the Union. the Confederates, he hoped to use the mountain to shield his army until he could cross it and cut off their retreat. While Union cavalry operated on the west side of South Mountain and skirmished with Confederates at Smithsburg, Hagerstown and Boonsboro, the bulk of Meade’s army moved first toward Frederick and then to Middletown. On July 8 the lead Union infantry elements began crossing the mountain. Over the next few days the remainder of the army would cross South Mountain by means of the gaps that had witnessed the 1862 battle. South Mountain, Battle of Boonsboro was being fought. At the same time, a Union detachment arrived at the ruins of Washington Monument and established a signal station. Having an excellent vantage point to see the movements of both armies, the signalmen provided an important service as they communicated with Union forces in the Cumberland Valley for the remainder of the campaign. Unfortunately for Meade, his movement across the mountain was too late to cut Lee’s retreat to Williamsport and the Potomac River. The bulk of Lee’s army reached Williamsport intact, but high water

prevented them from crossing the river. As they prepared formidable defenses against the expected attack by the Union army, Meade hesitated. His army had been marching rigorously since leaving Gettysburg, and he and his subordinates felt they needed more time to make a sufficient reconnaissance of the extensive Confederate defenses. Meanwhile, the river level fell and Lee was able to begin crossing the night of July 13, thus ending the Gettysburg Campaign. Washington Monument’s Use as a Signal Station a Union signal detachment at the monument communicated with signal stations near the battlefield, as well as in Middletown, Md. Later that same year, as Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart led a raid into Pennsylvania, a signal detachment was again sent to the monument. The “Wig-wags” — as signalmen became to be called — communicated with Union troops in Hagerstown.

Major Albert Myer’s “General Service Code” for wig-wag signaling was also known as the “four element” code because all of the characters transmitted were composed of from one to four flag motions. A combination of motions would indicate digits 1 through 5. Combinations of the digits would translate into letters, numbers, special characters or even short phrases.
The Battle of Boonsboro While the Confederate army retreated from Gettysburg, Gen. J.E.B. Stuart was assigned to prevent the Union cavalry from cutting the avenue of retreat to Williamsport and the Potomac River. One result was the Battle of Boonsboro on July 8, 1863. Stuart advanced from the direction of Funkstown and Williamsport. He first encountered Federal resistance at Beaver Creek Bridge and by late morning had pushed forward to several mudsoaked fields. Fighting here on horseback would be virtually impossible, forcing Stuart’s troops and Union cavalry under Generals Judson Kilpatrick and John Buford to dismount and fight on foot. As the Union left under Kilpatrick ran low on ammunition, it began to give way. Stuart’s advance finally ended when Union infantry began to arrive. Stuart withdrew north to Beaver Creek, having successfully delayed the Union pursuit for another day. H www.v alley revue.com
Three museums at South Mountain State Battlefield have been renovated and outfitted with new state-of-the-art exhibits. Each presents lively interpretations of the first completed monument dedicated to George Washington, the Battle of South Mountain, and the literary career and influence of noted war correspondent George Alfred Townsend. The fresh and innovative exhibits are the crowning achievement of the State Park’s effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain. The museums open in May and will remain open 7 days a week through September and weekends in October. Daily hours are 9 a.m.– 5 p.m. The museum building at Washington Monument State Park details the Battle of South Mountain, as well as the history of the Washington Monument. The monument was built by the people of Boonsboro in 1827 to honor George Washington. Exhibits highlight Washington's career and features include a fiber-optic map and telephones with recorded narratives. At Gathland State Park – home to the national historic monument War Correspondents Arch – the museum focuses on the literary career of Civil War correspondent George Alfred Townsend. The 25th Annual LEAF PEEPERS FESTIVAL will be held on September 27th, 28th, and 29th in Davis, Thomas and Canaan Valley, WV, in celebration of the arrival of autumn and the blazing fall colors associated with it. Due to the high elevation of the area, the peak of the colors historically arrive in late September. Events include the Fall Colors Golf Tournament, the popular Leaf Peepers Craft & Food Fair, the Run For It 2K/5K Run/Walk, the Leaf Peepers Family Pet Show, the World Famous Leaf Peepers Duck Race, and the 8th Annual Oktoberfest in September. Various shops hold special sales, move their wares to the sidewalks, hold arts and crafts demonstrations and invite regional artists to conduct seminars. Both Canaan Valley & Blackwater Falls State Parks and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge conduct special interpretive nature based hikes and presentations. Area outfitters will hold seminars and special hikes/bike rides/whitewater trips during that weekend. The Alpine Festival conducts the Food & Craft Fair, Duck Race, Golf Tournament, Photo Contest, and the new Car Show. New to the festival will be two events, giving visitors more to do on different days. Local volunteer fire departments sponsor The Leaf Peepers Parade on Friday evening and the Alpine Festival sponsors The Leaf Peepers Car Show on Sunday morning. Also new is the “Cornhole Tournament”. In 2005, the State Journal recognized the Leaf Peepers Festival as one of “55 Best Things to do in West Virginia”. Seneca Caverns Located in Riverton WV, a part of the scenic Germany Valley area. Seneca Caverns first opened its doors in 1928 making it the first show cave in WV. The first tours were done by lantern and it was not until 1930 that lights were installed. A second cave is also on the property, called The Stratosphere Cave it was only partially developed and has no electricity but daily tours are still run through there if you feel adventurous. Guided tours leaving every 30 minutes, specialty tours include Wild Cave tours, photo tours, and science tours for schools and groups. Robert Kennedy Memorial Presbyterian Church Organized in 1741 at Welsh Run, SE of Mercers-burg on Rt. 416, one of the oldest churches in the Cumberland Valley. Greencastle Established in 1782, historical events include President Washington’s visit during the Whiskey Rebellion, and John Brown’s stay while working on plans for the Harpers Ferry Raid. Firemen’s Display Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment. The Johnston Home Greencastle. Built in the late 1700’s by Dr. Robert Johnston, Surgeon-General during the Revolution. George Washington slept here during a visit at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker Located S of Greencastle. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed and marked the line between Md. and Pa. in 1765, placing stone markers at one-mile intervals, with every fifth mile marked by a Crown-Stone. This 105th milestone, is one of the few remaining left. Enoch Brown Park Just N of Greencastle. Massacre site of Enoch Brown, pioneer schoolteacher, and his ten pupils during the uprising of the Pontiac Indians in 1764. Martin’s Mill Covered Bridge Greencastle. One mi. W of Greencastle. The original bridge, built in 1849, crosses the Conococheague Creek. The bridge is 205 ft. long and approx. 28 ft. wide. Brown’s Mill Graveyard Near Greencastle. Monument built to the memory of Revolutionary War heroes pays tribute to the men who fought for independence. Corporal Rihl Monument Greencastle. Chestnut St., Hanover. An elegant Federal-style mansion, circa 1783. One of the first all brick buildings in the town; it once was the home of Hanover’s first Burgess. There are 7 rooms, 2 halls and a kitchen. The home is furnishings are circa 1815, the year the original owner and his wife died. Admission also provides entrance to the Warehime-Myers Mansion. One of Hanover’s twin mansions built by the Hanover Shoe Co. for the co-owners. It has 17 room, 2 large halls, a carriage house and an expansive lawn with a wide variety of trees, identified by ‘common and botanical’ names. It remained in the family until 1996 when J. William Warehime purchased it. He donated it the Hanover Area Historical Society in 2007. The furnishings are eclectic, some from each of the former owners.
