he warm mineral waters of Berkeley Springs have drawn visitors over the centuries from Native Americans to colonial notables like George Washington to today's travelers looking for stress relief and a quirky respite from daily routine. The waters flow at a constant 74 degrees in a small state park in the heart of the historic town. They are freely available for the taking from a public tap or for wading in the largest open display of spring waters in the Blue Ridge. A thriving spa community has grown up around the springs. Berkeley Springs boasts three times as many massage therapists as lawyers with a menu of more than 50 cutting edge spa treatments available daily to 21st century health seekers.

Honoring Hibernian Heroism at Antietam by Liz Shatto, Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area heartofthecivilwar.org HERITAGE AREA

ome March, there’s a little Irish in all of us! Whether your C ancestors hailed from the Emerald

Isle or you simply admire all things Celtic, a visit to Antietam National Battlefield will inspire new appreciation for Hibernian heroism. When the American Civil War erupted in 1861, vast Irish immigrant populations could be found in most Northeastern U.S. cities. Irish soldiers fought for both the Union and the Confederacy, hoping to show patriotism in defense of their adopted homeland. The famed Irish Brigade was formed in late 1861 with recruits from New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. These men fought in all of the major campaigns of the Army of the Potomac. In his report following the Battle of Antietam, Brigadier General Thomas F. Meagher noted that “The Irish Brigade had the honor of leading the pursuit of the rebels from South Mountain through Boonsborough and Keedysville…” and did so “with the utmost alacrity www.vall ey rev ue .co m

and enthusiasm.” After encountering severe fire while passing through a cornfield, they faced—with fixed bayonets—the center of the Confederate line, entrenched in the sunken road we know today as the “Bloody Lane.” Another largely Irish regiment, the 28th Massachusetts, crossed “Burnside’s Bridge” and advanced along the north side of the lower bridge road leading into Sharpsburg, facing fire from Confederate artillery. Recently re-opened to the public after a 15month restoration, Burnside Bridge is a must-see for those following Irish footsteps at Antietam. An Irish pilgrimage is best completed with a stop at a local pub. Options in the Heart of the Civil War abound, including Hagerstown’s Antietam Brewery, Magoo’s Pub & Eatery in Frederick, and O’Lourde’s Irish Pub in Westminster. Be sure to raise a pint with the Gaelic cheer “Faugh a Ballagh” (“Clear the Way”), which encouraged Irish valor on American soil in the 1860s. M ARC H 2 017
