From the front cover:

Local Irish Dance Company Celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with Shows in Frederick & Westminster Come celebrate Irish culture as you watch dancers perform traditional steps with an innovative style, while locally renowned musicians perform. Teelin Irish Dance Company is known for performances that accentuate the energy of Irish dance with cuttingedge choreography. The show fuses traditional and contemporary Irish dance and music in an exciting new way. From the graceful beauty of jigs and reels, to the thundering beat of percussive dance, a performance by this company leaves audience members at the edge of their seats and wishing for more! See the reason that Director Maureen Berry Gately has earned numerous choreography awards, including the Individual Artist award for Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC). Teelin Irish Dance Company has been producing and featured in Broadway quality shows in the Baltimore or Metro DC area annually since 2006, and has a reputation for enthralling audience members with innovative performances that accentuate the high energy of Irish dance. The first such show was Portraits of Ireland, which ran for six successful years, and was presented at venues including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Chesapeake Arts Center, Stephen’s Hall at Towson University, Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, and Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. In 2012, Teelin’s production of StepDance debuted to a sold out audience in a 1200-seat venue at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, and had its final run at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore in 2013. Sláinte then premiered in 2014 at the Jim Rouse Theatre in Columbia. This 6 MA RC H 2015

newest show in a prestigious line of productions will showcase audience favorites from the past decade, and features some of the best Irish Dancers in the Southern U.S. region, many of who will also be competing in April at the CLRG World Irish Dancing Championships in Montreal, Canada. On Saturday, March 7, 2015, at 7 pm Teelin Irish Dance Company will perform at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, MD. Tickets are available through the Weinberg Box Office at 301-600-2828, or visit www.teelin.com for online purchase. Tickets are $35 for adults and $25 for students and senior citizens. The Carroll County Arts Council in Westminster is thrilled to welcome back the Teelin Irish Dance Company for two live performances on Saturday, March 14 at 3 pm & 7 pm at The Carroll Arts Center. These performances are sponsored by Manchester Family Medicine. Tickets are $13 for Adults and $11 for CCAC Members, 18 & Under, and Seniors 60+ and can be purchased on line at www.CarrollCountyArtsCouncil.org THe VALLEY R ev u e

HERITAGE AREA

Civil War Trails By Elizabeth Scott Shatto, Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area

ocated above the Potomac River and below the Mason Dixon Line, the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area includes Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties in Maryland. This region of split loyalties may be the best place to discover the American Civil War, and exploring Maryland’s Civil War Trails is one easy way to do so. A network of driving tours with hundreds of interpreted sites, Civil War Trails fill in the gaps between the area’s important battlefields. Stories are told where they occurred, through Maryland’s beautiful countryside and vibrant urban centers. Three Civil War Trails traverse the Heart of the Civil War, with a fourth to be added soon. Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s 1862 Maryland Campaign can be traced on the Antietam Campaign – Lee Invades Maryland Trail. Gettysburg Campaign: Invasion & Retreat follows the troop movements through Maryland into Gettysburg for the monumental three-day battle. 1864 Attack on Washington: The Last Invasion, which www. va l leyrev ue . co m

opened last June, follows Confederate General Jubal Early’s troops from Maryland Heights in western Maryland to Fort Stevens in Washington, D.C. and pursues General Bradley T. Johnson’s raiders through Carroll County and eastward. The Battle of Monocacy, “the battle that saved Washington,” is the center piece of this trail. In April, the Heart of the Civil War will join another trail, John Wilkes Booth: Escape of an Assassin & War on Chesapeake Bay. Although discontinguous from the main route, a marker at Gathland State Park – the former estate of literary notable George Alfred Townsend – will discuss Townsend’s reporting of the Lincoln assassination and its aftermath. Free Civil War Trails map guides are available at local and state visitor centers in Maryland. A free smartphone app is also available as a travel guide and planning tool for Maryland’s Civil War Trails. To learn more, visit www.heartofthecivilwar.org or www.visitmaryland.org. MARC H 2015
