QUILT ODYSSEY 2016 OFFERS ONE-OF-A-KIND EXHBITS This year’s Quilt Odyssey 2016 is offering one-of-akind exhibits. We are showcasing the art of Margaret Solomon Gunn of Maine. Margaret has consistently claimed top prizes in almost all of the quilt contests she enters. She is known for her precision work and beautiful stitching as well as her original designs. Her quilts are truly masterpieces! This quality quilt show will be open to the public Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 6pm and on Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is $10 for a one-day pass and $15 for a multi-day pass. Quilt Odyssey also offers a group policy which makes the group process easy and fun. Also exhibited at Quilt Odyssey will be the finalists in the annual contest. Quilts from all over the nation will be competing for more than $12,000 in awards and prizes. A complete list and pictures of all the 2015 winners can be seen on Quilt Odyssey’s website under the menu heading “Contest-Past Winners – 2015.” Contest sponsors are Boline’s, Brother International, Elna, Gammill, Janome, Innova, Martelli Enterprises, Snyder’s Vacuum & Sewing, Starr Designs, Superior Threads, and Webfabrics. Another sponsor is Beba’s Enterprises, which gives away a quality sewing table and a custom cutting mat on Sunday at 3:30pm. You must be present at the drawing to win. All sponsorship monies go to the awards in the contest. Also scheduled this year is an exceptional exhibit of another aspect of the Christ Collection called “The Quilts of Pennsylvania Valleys.” Pat and Arlan Christ will be lecturing and giving gallery walks through their exhibit of vintage quilts not seen before.

Last, but not least, the staff of Quilt Odyssey have requested their own exhibit. This will not be judged, but will be open to interpretation of their senses of humor! Other lectures slated for Quilt Odyssey include Charlotte Angotti’s Thursday Lunch Lecture “What’s in Your Closet?,” Kimberly Einmo’s Tea Lecture “Jelly Rolls and Precuts: Recipe for Design Success,” and Mike Shetter’s “What EQ7 Can Do for You.” Friday’s lectures, besides the Christ lecture at 4pm, include Marti Michell’s “The Accidental Quilter” during the Lunch Lecture. Saturday, Donna Thomas will lecture on “Fearless Fabrics,” and Jo Morton will lecture about “Making Something New That Looks ‘Olde’ .” Advance registration for these lectures is required. The Merchants Mall will be comprised of approximately 80 merchants offering everything related to sewing or quilting, from sewing machines and longarms to fabrics galore, notions, patterns, books, furniture, gift items, vintage items, kits, wool, woodworked quilt hangers, notecards and watercolors, gadgets of every kind, buttons and embellishments. Hugs & Kisses Quilts for Kids celebrates its 11th year! This non-profit venture started in 2006 as a way of giving back to the community. Everything is donated, from sewing machines to thread, fabric and batting. Sue Frederick, Greencastle, Pa., is in charge of and organizes this venture and makes kits ahead of QO to be sewn at Quilt Odyssey. After QO, they are bound by quilters and members of the Chambersburg Quilt Guild. Shawnee State Park. W of Bedford on U.S. 30. Named after the Shawnee Indians, this 3,800-acre park includes a 451-acre lake. 335 campsites, fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, hunting, snowmobiling, and picnicking. Open year-round. Gravity Hill. Located west of Rt. 96 near New Paris, PA. Defy gravity at this remote spot in Bedford County. Water runs uphill … cars roll uphill … it really works! Difficult to find unless you have detailed directions. The Bedford Co.Visitors Bureau will send a free map and brochure – Call 1-800-765-3331. Lake Gordon & Koon Lake. Located E of U.S. 200 S of Bedford in the Centerville area. A real mecca for fishermen. Espy Hous. Built in 1771, served as Washington’s Headquarters in the fall of 1794 during the Whiskey Rebellion. The only remaining building in existence on its original site, occupied by Gen. Arthur St. Clair, President of the Continental Congress & first Governor of the Northwest Territory. Anderson House. 137 Pitt St., Bedford. Built in 1814 by Dr. John Anderson, a portion was used for his office & in 1815, converted one-half of the house into a bank, whose original vault can still be viewed. Fort Loudoun. Historic Revolutionary War Fort ruins mark the site of the first Colonial uprising against British military rule in 1767. Ramps Bridge. Also known as Failors Mill Bridge, one mile west of Newburg (off Rt. 641) on Covered Bridge Road. Built in 1882, it is the only such structure remaining on its original site in Cumberland Co. Red Bridge. The covered bridge just south of Mercersburg on Rt. 416 was built in 1883 and is still in daily use. Mercersburg. Home of the famed Mercersburg Academy, a private school whose campus is home to the log cabin birthplace of James Buchanan, the only native Pennsylvanian to become President of the US. Cowans Gap State Park. Located 9 mi. NE of McConnellsburg. Over 1,300 acres includes a 42-acre lake for swimming, fishing, and boating, 232 campsites, 10 rental cabins, and scores of private cabins. Mercers-burg on Rt. 416, one of the oldest churches in the Cumberland Valley. Greencastle. Established in 1782, historical events include President Washington’s visit during the Whiskey Rebellion, and John Brown’s stay while working on plans for the Harpers Ferry Raid. Firemen’s Display. Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment. The Johnston Home. Greencastle. Built in the late 1700’s by Dr. Robert Johnston, Surgeon-General during the Revolution. George Washington slept here during a visit at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Mason-Dixon Crown-Stone Marker. Located S of Greencastle. Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon surveyed and marked the line between Md. and Pa. in 1765, placing stone markers at one-mile intervals, with every fifth mile marked by a Crown-Stone. This 105th milestone, is one of the few remaining left. Enoch Brown Park. Just N of Greencastle. Massacre site of Enoch Brown, pioneer schoolteacher, and his ten pupils during the uprising of the Pontiac Indians in 1764. Martin’s Mill Covered Bridge. Greencastle. One mi. W of Greencastle. The original bridge, built in 1849, crosses the Conococheague Creek. The bridge is 205 ft. long and approx. 28 ft. wide. Brown’s Mill Graveyard. Near Greencastle. Monument built to the memory of Revolutionary War heroes pays tribute to the men who fought for independence. Corporal Rihl Monument. Greencastle. Corporal William Rihl of the First New York Cavalry was the first union soldier killed on Free Soil in the Civil War, June 22, 1863. Brown’s Mill School. Just N of Greencastle, E of U.S. 11. A complete furnished example of a country schoolhouse. Waynesboro. Dates back to 1749. Located nearby is the Snow-Hill Nunnery with the cloistered buildings intact as they were used by the 7th-Day Baptists. Toll Gate House. 323 E. Main St. Waynesboro. Built between 1844 and 1853. Now serves as the office for the Franklin County Chapter of the American Red Cross. A.T.H. & L. Museum. S. Potomac St., Waynesboro. Contains approximately 150 pieces of Fire Company Memorabilia dating back to 1880. Free. Oller House. 138 W. Main Street, Waynesboro PA 17268. Tour: Queen Anne-style home donated by industrialist J.F. Oller Family. Houses the Waynesboro Historical Society and area genealogy library and information. uly in the Heart of the Civil War is an embarrassment of riches. Besides much anticipated annual events and commemorations, the month brings with it an array of new ways to experience history. Antietam’s annual Salute to Independence featuring the Maryland Symphony Orchestra on July 2 is a great way to “Find Your Park” during the National Park Service Centennial year. That Friday and Saturday is also Civil War weekend with the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium. Patriotic music, fireworks and America’s pastime make a perfect prelude to July 4 festivities. Continue the all-American summertime traditions with an oldfashioned Ice Cream Social at the Union Mills Homestead near Westminster on July 24. Prefer intrigue? Learn about Civil War spy games during a free outdoor lecture on July 20, part of a weekly series at Sharpsburg’s Jacob Rohrbach Inn. On July 24, staff from the Maryland State Archives will present an interactive “Porch Program” about the use of secret codes, riddles and puzzles during the Civil War at the historic Newcomer House near Keedysville. Visitors may make their own codes and ciphers. For those curious about the civilian experience, Monocacy National Battlefield has launched a Historic 24 J ULY 2 016 • 4 6 t h an n iv e r sarY !
House Series. On July 16 and 17, an open house at the Worthington Farm will include living history demonstrations and invite visitors to stand at the window where six-year old Glenn Worthington watched the battle of on his front lawn. Frederick County Parks and Recreation will offer a guided canoe/kayak trip on the Monocacy River on July 23, designed to view strategic parts of the Battle of Monocacy from a completely new perspective. July is a month of battle anniversaries that remind us of valor and sacrifice. Monocacy National Battlefield commemorates the 152nd battle anniversary on July 9 and 10, while the retreat from Gettysburg in 1863 is remembered in Washington County. Aspen Hall 405 Boyd Ave., Martinsburg. Nestled on seven park-like acres on a stocked trout stream and built of native limestone, this elegant mansion, circa 1750, is one of the most historic homes in our area. Many of the original features of the 22-room house remain. The farmstead was known as “Mendenhall’s Fort” during the French & Indian War which started 250 years ago. Spruce Knob Judy Gap. At 4,860 feet, the highest point in the state is an area of windblown red spruce and rock outcrops, part of the Monongahela National Forest. Enjoy the interpretive trail, observation tower and views.
Seneca Rocks This must-see, 900-foot tall strata of Tuscarora sandstone dates to the Silurian Age. Part of the Monongahela National Forest and known for their scenic beauty, the rocks are considered by many climbers to be the best climb in the East. Seneca Caverns Located in Riverton WV, a part of the scenic Germany Valley area. Seneca Caverns first opened its doors in 1928 making it the first show cave in WV.
