hat rings your bell? Frederick County’s annual Bell and History Day offers something for nearly everyone to enjoy while exploring area museums and historic sites on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Start with a visit to the Frederick County History Bell, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Located at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 South East Street in Frederick, the bell was cast in 2006 in memory of the esteemed historian, Judge Edward Delaplaine, to commemorate the return of Bell and History Day in Frederick County after a decade absence from the local scene. While at the Visitor Center, pick up an event brochure that describes free activities happening at 20 locations across the county. Scavenger hunts for kids, living history vignettes, all variety of hands-on crafts, and even blade-forging demonstrations are just some of the visitor experiences to be enjoyed. Bell and History Day begins at 10 a.m. and will continue through 4 p.m. Why bells? Bells traditionally mark the passage of time and toll news of important events or calls to action. They suit a history-themed event well. Bells have also inspired writers of song and verse for centuries. Aspen Hall 405 Boyd Ave., Martinsburg. Nestled on seven park-like acres on a stocked trout stream and built of native limestone, this elegant mansion, circa 1750, is one of the most historic homes in our area. Many of the original features of the 22-room house remain. The farmstead was known as “Mendenhall’s Fort” during the French & Indian War which started 250 years ago. Seneca Rocks This must-see, 900-foot tall strata of Tuscarora sandstone dates to the Silurian Age. Greencastle. The Rescue Hose Company displays the nation’s oldest workable fire engine built in 1741 and other early firefighting equipment. The Johnston Home. Greencastle.
