ALL ABOUT ICEWINES Kim Cyr

The Nova Scotia Icewine Festival is about to happen over two consecutive weekends this February. The events will be held collaboratively at Lightfoot & Wolfville Vineyards, with many distillers and vintners participating. The events include a gala, fireworks, a multi-course dinner with three chefs from three of our wineries, and 4 days of tasting events (February 14-16 & 22-23, visit nsicewinefest.com for more information).

The Definition of Icewine Canada is the largest icewine producer in the world. It is estimated the icewine crop is responsible for billions annually. In Canada, we have a federal legal definition of icewine: It must be “made from grapes naturally frozen on the vine.” In Germany, this wine is referred to as Eiswein and has been produced since the 18th century and has the strictest rules of production. Many Canadian wineries follow the strict German doctrine of harvesting and production and quality. Some other areas do make this style of sweet wine by using cryogenics or freezing techniques on their grapes. There are only a few countries that can produce icewine without manipulating nature, with Canada being the foremost. Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, and the (northern) United States are among the other countries that produce this style of wine naturally.

The Hard Facts • Natural icewines require a hard freeze.

• Grapes for icewine are picked at minus 8C or colder. They say the optimum is between minus 12 and 14.

• Grapes are typically picked at night so the concentrate isn’t diluted by the morning sun.

• Many wineries harvest after midnight on the first or second cold night when these temperatures are achieved. They try to so on first night so the grape does not thaw and refreeze.

• The grapes must be pressed almost immediately so as not to dilute the juice. Only 15% of the juice is left at this time.

• The primary varietals used in Nova Scotia icewine are Vidal, Riesling, and Muscat.

• Red grapes are often used in Ontario and British Columbia, primarily Cabernet Franc

and Cabernet Sauvignon (longer ripening grapes).

Icewine Trivia • British Columbia was the first place in Canada to release a commercially-produced icewine (a 1972 Hainle Vineyards, which sold in 1978).

• One bottle of Ontario’s Royal DeMaria Vineyards Chardonnay icewine once sold to a Saudi prince for $30,000. This 2000 Chardonnay icewine now goes for 250,000$.

• Counterfeit Canadian icewine is a huge market in China. One imitation icewine bears the Canadian maple leaf on the label.

It is said that up to 50% of icewine sold in China is counterfeit.

Eligibility information and application forms may be picked up at the EKM Community Health Centre Front Desk, from the Health Foundation Office, or by going online to www.ekmhealthfoundation.ca A charitable tax number is required for all eligible grants.

• Approximately 80 percent of Canadian icewine is exported.

• The authoritative Peter Gamble, one of the consultants for Benjamin Bridge and Lightfoot & Wolfville and other steering committees within our province, was one of the first on the scene in Ontario experimenting with icewine in 1982.

Proposals of $15,000 or under are encouraged.

• Some of the world’s best sommeliers gathered in Moscow and unanimously voted icewine as the better match for caviar versus champagne. The conclusion drawn was that champagnes had gotten drier and drier over the last century and that the saltiness of caviar needed a counterbalance from the luscious sweetness of Riesling icewine.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Samuel (Sam) Hyman Dworkin, peacefully in his sleep, at the Kentville Valley Regional Hospital on Wednesday, January 22, 2020. Born September 15, 1933 in Montreal, he moved to Wolfville, NS, in 2002. When he was young, he bought and sold cattle with his father (Esser Dworkin), and later opened his own grocery store. He then went on to work for the London Life Insurance Company for several years and was a top salesman, earning many awards. Son of the late Esser and Ida (Mandelssige), Sam was predeceased by sibling, Alec, and son Steven. He is survived by sisters, Sandi Dworkin, Ettie Seltzer, and Gertie Smiley. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Irene (Shames), his constant companion of more than 60 years; daughter, Susan (Wolfville); sons, Barry (wife, Elizabeth, Ottawa), Joel (Arkansas), and Brian (Montreal); and grandchildren, Jossée, Isaac, Alexander, Steven, Taylor, Caleb, and Sydney, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Sam loved to tell stories and reminisce about his past. He loved fishing and reading (practically wore his library card out with use!) and always had a book in his hands. His favourite games included backgammon with Frank Thorensen, cribbage with Rick Mehta, and various video games to pass the time when he could no longer fish. His sense of humour, fun-loving nature, and strong spirit attracted people, and he would often walk up to strangers wherever he was in public to strike up a conversation.

He was very proud of his family and children and would boast often about their success.

He loved animals and especially our cats, Sylvester, Smokey, and Figaro. A modest person, seeking very little for himself, Sam was happiest spending time with his wife and family, dedicating himself to them, as they were the great loves of his life. He had a stubborn side to be sure but he was generous to a fault, never hesitating to help someone in need. Sam wanted to have a party before passing away, but was too ill for it to be arranged. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at the Serenity Funeral Home in Wolfville (902-679-2822) on Saturday, May 30, 3pm.

WHO’S WHO: SHAUN WHYNACHT Mike Butler

It baffles me sometimes how in less than a week or so, someone you’ve never met before can easily become one of your favourite people to be around and chat with. Has that happened to you before? A chance meeting between two strangers and before you know it there’s common interests discussed, fun banter, dance parties, and a better appreciation for each other’s contributions to their respective communities. That’s how I would describe my friendship with Shaun Whynacht.

It has taken me longer to learn how to spell his name correctly than to charm him into helping me with some community theatre projects, and he shows no signs of stopping that, along with growing his own business here in the Valley and beyond. I am really quite excited to share this amazing Who’s Who with you.

Shaun was raised by his mother and grandmother in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Entrepreneurship was a regular thing in his house, which lead him to start his first business as a DJ at the age of 17. From there Shaun went on to study video production at the Kingstec Campus of NSCC.

He’s a dream to work with! But the hat that Shaun is the most passionate about is the one he wears as a marketing coach and consultant.

He helps businesses across Canada and the US gain clarity and confidence in their ability to market and grow their businesses. Shaun is positioning his business for rapid growth in North America over the next 12-24 months with the goal to bring on local coaches and trainers to work with all of their coaching clients.

“I started a video marketing business out of college and continued to do that while moving to northern BC for three years,” Shaun told me. “I then moved to Calgary for a full time position with the Canadian Cancer Society before returning home to Nova Scotia and ramping up my marketing and branding business.

2019 marks 10 years for Blue Cow Marketing and 20 years in the marketing world. I am so excited to see what 2020 brings to me.”

When he’s not working he can be found in his yard with his little man Cameron, doing projects on his tractor or ATVing. Cameron is one of the most adorable young lads I’ve ever met and will no doubt be a Who’s Who one day!

Let’s chat about Shaun’s many hats, which I am sure he wears to keep his head warm.

Shaun is a jack of all trades and never shies away from trying new things or helping others. Besides being incredibly tech savvy, Shaun has carved his way into the Valley community theatre world recently, building sets and doing lights and sound for several CentreStage shows. In Shaun’s high school years he was introduced to theatre from a technical side. Technology always came easily to him and having the ability to bring theatre to life with the addition of lights and sound amazed him. He had stepped away from it for many years but thanks to his volunteer work at CentreStage Theatre, he’s back at it and the passion has returned: “to me it’s not about the work,” he says. “It’s about the excitement that the kids have just being part of a play that makes it all worthwhile. And of course, DJ’ing a dance party with Mike Butler dressed as The Grinch certainly adds to the love of the “job”

What Shaun likes the most about the Valley is the variety of activities you can do. From sports to theatre to recreation, it has a very friendly nature to it. And what does the future hold for him? Well, his bucket list involves three exciting things: Learn to fly, develop a business mentorship program for motivated youth to learn about entrepreneurship, and to surprise a single-parent family who would never have normally had the opportunity to go to Disney, with a trip there (as a kid he always wanted to go, but it was never an option for him).

Aside from theatre, his business, and being a full-time dad, Shaun is also a licensed display fireworks technician and pyrotechnician (of course, right?).

After having the pleasure of adding Shaun to my friends circle and getting to know him a bit, I can see those three goals coming to light in no time. This guy is good everyone! Contact Shaun for Blue Cow Marketing expertise and have a prosperous new year!

AVRL NEWS: FOOD FOR FINES INITIATIVE The Annapolis Valley Regional Library is once again offering a Food for Fines initiative during the month of February at all of its eleven locations, and the Bookmobile. Just give us an item for the food bank and we’ll forgive up to $3.00 in fines. The really good news is that there is no limit on the number of fines which can be forgiven! Do you owe $8.50? Three food bank items will take care of that.

The most needed food items are: Soup and stew, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables and fruit, pasta and rice, pasta sauce, peanut butter, cereal, formula and baby food, meal replacement drinks, canned and powdered milk.

Non-food items must be new and unopened.

Commonly requested are: Laundry detergent, dish soap, shampoo, shaving cream, disposable razors, feminine hygiene products, plastic cling-wrap.

OSCAR PICKS 2020 Mike Butler

Hi everyone! Is it Academy Awards time already? It seems like just yesterday that I wrote my 2019 Oscar Fever Uncorked article and predicted my Oscar picks. Last year, I did okay in my picks and this year I have seen ALL the films in the running so I’m excited to see how I perform.

The Academy Awards ceremony airs on Sunday February 9. Here are my predictions for this year’s Oscars.

The supporting actor and actress categories can throw a curve ball some years. This year, however, I am going to be greatly surprised if they go outside of Brad Pitt and Laura Dern.

Best Supporting Actress: Laura, daughter of Oscar nominee parents Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd (Oscar loves awarding second generation actors), is an Oscar favourite this year for her gutsy, powerful performance in Marriage Story.

In a film anchored by two incredible leads, Laura stole the show and despite loving the company she has in this category (Kathy Bates, Margot Robbie, and Florence Pugh), Laura Dern will not be beat!

Best Supporting Actor: This is a category filled with some of the strongest actors of all time. All of the nominees (Tom Hanks, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins) have won Oscars before, except Brad Pitt’s was for producing (12 Years A Slave), not acting! Mr. Pitt is a cherished actor who has done exceptional work in the past, and his turn as stuntman Cliff Booth in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has won critics prizes across the board, and he will walk to the podium come Oscar night!

Best Actress: In early 2019, I heard through the grapevine that Renée Zellweger was cast as Judy Garland in a new biopic. I was skeptical. I’m a huge fan of Judy Garland and of Renée’s but just couldn’t see it coming together. Well, I was wrong! And since seeing Renée’s show-stopping, stunning embodiment of Judy Garland last September in Judy, there has never been another actress to come close to taking this Oscar from her! The look was flawless, she did her own vocals and introduced this legend to a whole new crew of film goers.

Best Actor: For years, Joaquin Phoenix has delivered consistently brilliant performances with films like Gladiator, Signs, Walk the Line, and To Die For, but his turn in Joker is nothing short of a marvel (yuk, yuk!). His layered performance has been cleaning up all the awards and he will no doubt add an Oscar to his mantle on February 9. It’s much deserved and long overdue!

Best Director: Oh what a list of accomplished directors we have here this year. With some first-time nominees as well as two previous Best Directors, this is a tough category, but in the end I think Sam Mendes will be triumphant for his flawless execution of the technical marvel 1917. Mendes won Best Director 20 years ago for American Beauty, and I think Oscar will come his way again this year.

Best Picture: I was getting a little worried in the summer that there would not be a fantastic slew of films for the Oscar run this year, but before I knew it, the floodgates opened and here we are with a lot of wonderful films in the running. We have one of the best Tarantino films (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and a hilarious and poignant Nazi dramedy (Jojo Rabbit), along with Parasite, Ford v Ferrari, Joker, The Irishman, Marriage

VISUALLY SPEAKING: TWO ARTISTS, ONE CANVAS Anna Horsnell

It begins over morning coffee. Surrounded by an idyllic setting on the shore of Black River Lake, artists Heather Alexis Porter and Jen White begin to imagine their next painting.

They discuss ideas, suggesting a direction, a theme, maybe some aspect of the Valley near to their hearts. Here the spark of inspiration is often spoken out loud, shaped, and realized in a wonderful collaboration of life and art.

Their shared studio is a large, bright space dedicated to art making. That’s not by chance.

From the moment they decided to build their new home, studio space was a crucial part of the plan. As White explains, “for both of us, the art just has to get out. It’s part of who we both are.” That art may be individual work or shared pieces and can take a multitude of forms. Each of them is endlessly curious, exploring different means of expression, from cement sculpting to needle-felting. Whatever they learn on their own, they bring to their work together. In fact, it was nearly eight years ago, when White considered combining her needle-felt work with Porter’s painting.

Porter had read an article on collaborations in art and wondered at the possibilities. They haven’t looked back.

Today, their joint work is most often a large bold canvas full of bright colour and intriguing detail. Each painting is the sum of individual contributions. From the first mark on a blank canvas, they alternate back and forth, responding and reacting to what came before, pausing to discuss what might come next, and deciding when the painting is done.

“We try to flow into each other’s work,” smiles White. They both have distinct styles. Porter provides the looser, free-flowing brushwork, while White brings in the finer detail. In Porter’s words, together, “we have a broader range of skills, and we’re trying to make a balance between our work.” This is a visual duet of sorts and the result is fascinating. Porter thoughtfully explains that working together they choose subjects they wouldn’t do on their own. Mutual trust and communication are crucial, as is having fun working together. It’s another way to connect on a very unique level, building understanding and anticipation of the other. She continues, ”[working together] opens your mind in a different way, involves a different thought process, and a different direction. Personally, it sometimes creates a bit more hesitancy, that I might take the painting in a wrong direction.” White adds

that creating together requires more discipline, but when all is considered, they both agree collaboration is something other artists should consider.

Working together is bound to influence what each artist creates on their own. “It has definitely changed what I do on my own,” agrees White, “It has changed my style, and I’m more willing to put things together, mixing different media, choosing different subject matter, and adding layers.” Porter has had a similar experience, adding, “my choice of colour combinations is affected, as is my mark-making.

We learn from each other.”

As with much in life, the willingness to work together, to find solutions, to coax each other beyond personal comfort zones, can bring great outcomes beyond individual effort.

Creating art with another takes a certain confidence and skill level, bravery perhaps, to let go and open up the artistic process, to be vulnerable. Creative collaboration also asks each artist to consider nothing is precious.

However, there is a freedom in making art with another, an opportunity to play and try new things, encouraged perhaps by the shared adventure. The joyful artwork of these two artists shows just what is possible.

DINNER OUT: THE MARITIME EXPRESS CIDER CO. Scott Campbell

Well, we waited a while, with lots of hints of what was to come and who the new chef was going to be. Then the chef arrived and we knew it was just a matter of time before the newly-renovated kitchen was ready to go into full operation. We waited impatiently, and then it happened. The new menu became a reality. We beelined it to the Maritime Express Cider Co. to try some of the new offerings from Chef Stephane Levac. Chef Levac was already well-known in the area after a stint at Just Us Coffee as their chef and as the genius behind Frais Catering and the delicious bagels that were a regular feature at the Farmers’ Market, but now, Chef Levac is working his magic at The Maritime Express Cider Co. and oh, what magic he’s working. Here are some of the highlights that I got to try when my group sampled the new menu for the first time.

First up we decided to try some of the appetizers. Everything looked really good but we finally decided on some warm olives with orange zest, garlic, fennel sweets, thyme, chili flakes, and olive oil. I’m not sure why everyone doesn’t serve olives warm. I’ll admit I was a little late to the party where olives are concerned and I would often say I didn’t really

Spiced chick peas were fried to perfection and then mixed in with sweet potatoes, broccoli, red onion, and kale, and covered with a rich tahini sauce. The earthy taste of the fried chick peas with the bright vegetables all worked perfectly with the tahini to create a spectacular vegetarian dish.

You really need to give them a try. We also got some zucchini: long strips dipped in batter and fried to a golden brown, and then drizzled with a creamy sumac aioli with just a dash of basil and mint. This warm delicious fried treat was a table favourite. The third – and maybe the one that disappeared first – was the chips, but these aren’t just any chips. These were handsliced potatoes that were then marinated in (of course) apple cider vinegar and served

with salted sour cream. Crunchy, tangy, salty deliciousness.

When the mains came out we were impressed with the presentation and the amazing aromas that came out with them. I had opted for the burger and a salad (although fries with spicy aioli or chips were also choices). This pure beef patty was served with a herb and garlic gouda cheese, smoked bacon, charred onions, and mustard gravy. The incredible charred flavour of the beef patty took centre stage and the rich cheese, bacon, onion, and gravy all worked together to create one of the most mouth-watering burgers I think I’ve ever eaten. The salad was also great, with fresh flavours of cheese, pears, and pumpkin seeds all under a mustard vinaigrette.

Another option that evening was the porchetta. This juicy portion of pork perfection came out piping hot alongside spicy white beans, wilted greens, and tomato vinaigrette.

The tender pork quite literally melts in your mouth and the rich full flavours of the porchetta and the greens under the vinaigrette are a masterful dance of flavours. This is a must-try!

So, again, if you read my articles often, you’ll know I have a sweet tooth and that I’m hard pressed to say “no” to a dessert. Well, the dessert menu at The Maritime Express Cider Co. certainly did not make my decision any easier. There is a rich and wonderful assortment of desserts to choose from, but my eye was quickly drawn to the apple fritters with dulce de leche. I mean, a place that uses apples to make its incredible selection of ciders must know a thing or two about an apple fritter, right?! Oh, do they ever. This sweet and fluffy fried pastry is served up golden brown and smothered in one the most amazing dulce de leche sauces I’ve ever encountered. Take a moment to breathe in the sweet aroma before you start eating this incredible dessert because once you start, it’s impossible to stop until every dulce de leche-soaked crumb is gone.

So, if you haven’t tried this great new menu, then pick a night to celebrate and enjoy this wonderful eating establishment in Kentville’s Main Street Station (formerly the Cornwallis Inn). I’ve been a woodcrafter for many years and have sold artisanal work in the past. I have built and sold electric guitars. Over the last three years, I’ve spent more time with painting, and since I joined the Evangeline Artists’ Cooperative last year, I’ve been displaying my paintings in public. I paint at home at any time of day.

I’m still experimenting with style, but I’m currently painting mostly in a ‘realistic’ style.

I enjoy working with an accurate, detailed drawing on the paper before starting with paint. I find this suits my disposition quite well, since as a woodworker, I’m accustomed to careful planning of layout, precision measurement and marking, and working to very fine tolerances. My process begins with my own photos and I often go on photo-taking expeditions in search of content. This could be something as simple as going out to the garden, or I may drive to one of the local harbours. I’m interested in scenes that I find instill a sense of calm, peacefulness, and relaxation. I take many pictures, and I find the process of editing the photos for composition to be a very relaxing task. These photos form the basis of my paintings, but I am able to make whatever adjustment I desire in terms of colour and composition. I find it very interesting that simple objects, both natural and person-created can inspire emotional reactions in both myself, and those who view my work.

In 2014 a young Tiago Voss, back from a stint in Germany, purchased The Market from Rick and Michelle Daniels, who ran the ubiquitous downtown business in Wolfville for 43 years. Tiago maintained the spirit of the shop, while putting his own stamp on it, still catering to an Acadia University crowd, but offering something for all demographics – from vintage vinyl to stylish luggage. Now, six years later, Tiago is moving the store to a larger space (previously occupied by The Box of Delights Bookshop). Having been in the same location for over 50 years, this move feels monumental. We caught up with Tiago to ask him about what it was like transitioning ownership of an established business, and what’s in store for the new location.

A LOVE LETTER TO WOLFVILLE Marie Mossman

Your Acadia students energize my step when I walk among them downtown. In groups or alone, they flash their youthful smiles. Sometimes, they hold a door for me, because they do that sort of thing. In the gym, they interact with all respectfully, young or old, muscled or not, stylish or dressed in faded cotton knits.

The students’ fitness instructions, music performances, and dramatic productions enhance life for all persons in and around Wolfville.

Shopkeepers in town learn clients’ names and preferences. If you note a gap in opportunities for entertainment or learning here, you can start an interest group through Newcomers.

Kindness is healthy in Wolfville.

Several years ago, I fell on an icy patch of sidewalk in front of EOS. A lean young man with dark hair and a dark coat stopped beside me. He asked if I was okay, and then offered to help me up. Thank you, stranger. I fell again, another winter, while shovelling my driveway.

A small sedan was whizzing by. The driver jammed on her brakes when she noticed my feet fly out from under me. The passenger,

The Grapevine (GV): The Market has a long legacy. What was it like taking over a long-standing business?

Tiago Voss (TV): It can be both a benefit and a detriment taking over a business, especially one that was a staple in the community for as long as The Market was prior to my ownership. I think it helped that I maintained many aspects that Rick and Michelle had in place when it came to transitioning our customers.

One of the characteristics of the shop that I felt worked in my favour was the laid back atmosphere. This allowed me to put my own spin on things right off the bat and still have the regulars unfazed, and usually, excited when they came back for their next visit. Obviously, you’re not going to please everyone 100% and we experienced that, and still do to this day, with the old school folks who feel I’ve “modernized” The Market, as if that is a negative.

However, I see this as a challenge. We want to take this longstanding staple in the community and continue to grow it in a sustainable way so that we can stick around for another 50 years!

GV: As fashions quickly change, what do retailers need to do to stay relevant?

TV: My girlfriend and I both enjoy learning what’s happening, but tend to have more mild tastes, which we bring in through the store. I think focusing on core items that don’t tend to go in and out of style quickly has worked well for us, as we fully recognize fast fashion has a very big impact on the environment. We try to focus on as many Canadian-, or at least North American-made brands as possible to

help to ensure sustainability is a focus for the lines we are promoting.

GV: What do you have planned for the relocation of your store? Anything new that folks can expect?

TV: Lots of new brands! We were so sad when Box of Delights Bookshop and Inquisitive Toys & Baby closed, and we feel there is a gap in those kinds of products for our community, so you can expect to see more kid and baby products, books, more clothing (think Levi’s), perhaps some more dog items (high quality collars/leashes/toys/beds), and generally expanding our offerings of everything, including our house brand, Northern Lattitude.

GV: Any advice for other young entrepreneurs in the Valley?

TV: Listen to your gut! I am not saying don’t ask for guidance or do your research, however, everyone has an opinion about something and it can be easy to become discouraged or scared. The Valley in particular is known for being hard to penetrate and a little hesitant of change. Just be persistent and don’t underestimate the power of community. Be inclusive and supportive and as long as you stand behind what you’re doing or selling, that will speak volumes to the people in our area.

Why do I love thee, Wolfville? Is it for your beauty, food, and inviting drinks? It could be, but no. I love you, my fair town, for another reason.

brow furrowed, lowered her window to call out: “Do you need help?” They waited for me to reply, and only then did the two drive on.

One of the librarians at the Wolfville Public Library phoned me:“You left your wallet in a bag at the library.” Thank you, all librarians of Wolfville, for rescuing items left behind, and for your efficient, varied, and pleasantly-provided service to clients.

Yesterday, a barista returned a hearing aid after I inquired if it had been found where she worked. She searched the café without success and then went an extra step. She phoned her employer at his home to inquire about the hearing aid. How many workers would do that for a casual customer? Thank you for your kindness.

Wolfville, you now know I love you most of all for your people, not only the individuals mentioned above, my neighbours and friends, but the vast majority of persons I encounter every day. In Wolfville, chances are Mayor Cantwell will answer his own phone at the Town Hall, and for certain, when you fall down, someone will help you stand up. I love you, Wolfville.

A CONUNDRUM FOR THE CHARLES MACDONALD HOUSE MUSEUM

Fred Macdonald, Director, The Charles Macdonald Concrete House The Charles Macdonald House of Centreville Society has had a good run. In 1997 the Society was formed by a group of interested citizens keen to preserve and celebrate the lifeworks of Charles and Mabel Macdonald.

The grand opening was an event held at the Concrete House in Centreville and featured the Lieutenant Governor, musical entertainment, and dignitaries from far and wide.

In the early years, The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, who had mounted an exhibit of Charlie and Mabel’s work in the 1980s, were very supportive, offering help with fundraising activities that raised the society’s visibility considerably. There were golf tournaments, antique shows, the yearly Captain’s Dinner and silent auctions. They were busy times.

But that’s all changed. Interest in the Society has waned and there are only a few tired board members remaining.

On the bright side, the Society is asset-rich, with The Blue Cottage and beachfront property at Huntington Point on the Bay of Fundy, the original Concrete House in Centreville, and a substantial repatriated collection of the works of Charles and Mabel Macdonald: paintings, watercolours, photographs, sculptures and more.

For 22 years, the society has employed summer students to tour the public through Charlie and Mabel’s legacy and exhibits of works by local Valley artists. We’ve become an attraction on the route to one of the province’s busiest attractions: Halls Harbour. The sad part is that there is neither expertise nor

energy to properly assert the Charles Macdonald Concrete House into the North Kings’ tourism mix.

The Society is a longstanding member of the Association of Nova Scotia Museums. It receives a modest grant from Nova Scotia’s Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. We understand that the province’s funding rationale is currently being reviewed and allotments will now be determined by a new evaluation system. We don’t know what it means for the future.

Our current fundraising effort consists of donations and providing holidays at The Blue Cottage. Though we’ve been able to retire the loan on The Blue Cottage and property at Huntington Point, we are still owing on the Concrete House in Centreville.

Recently, due to a request from our insurance company, we’ve had the Concrete House roof inspected. It’s been determined that the roof needs repair. We are currently seeking quotes for that work and needless to say, it exerts pressures we hadn’t prepared for.

This all begs big questions: Is there local interest to rebuild the Society and make it more community based? Is there local expertise to employ our not so insignificant assets toward self-sustainability? Is there a local business that might see the benefit of a relationship with the Society?

ULYSSES STRING QUARTET IN THE GARDEN ROOM ON MARCH 1 Janet Kirkconnell

Performances by the Ulysses String Quartet, founded in the summer of 2015, and at present the graduate quartet-in-residence at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, have been greeted by critics with unbridled enthusiasm. “Emotively and dynamically, the quartet is particularly astounding” wrote one critic in The Guardian. They were praised by The Strad magazine for their “textural versatility,” “grave beauty,” and “the kind of chemistry many quartets long for, but rarely achieve.” San Diego Story noted their “avid enthusiasm... [with] chops to back up their passion,” and The Buffalo News found the quartet “delivered with a blend of exuberance and polished artistry.”

No stranger to competitions, the Ulysses won first prize in the 2018 Schoenfeld International String Competition, the grand prize and gold medal in the senior string division of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, finished first in the American Prize, and won second prize at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in 2017. It was also awarded a career development grant in the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition. This past August, the group won the Grand Prix in the chamber music category (ensemble) of the Vietnam International Music Competition. In mid-May of this year, it will give the Lisa Arnhold Memorial Recital in Carnegie Hall.

Before that, however, we will have the great good fortune to be able to hear the quartet in Wolfville! The evening prior to their March 1 concert in the Garden Room of the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre on the Acadia campus, the quartet also performs in

the Cecilia Concerts held in the Lillian Piercey Concert Hall at the Maritime Conservatory in Halifax. Apart from Franz Josef Haydn’s “The Joke” quartet, which both programs have in common, in Halifax they will also play Dmitri Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for String Quartet, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C# minor, op. 131. In Wolfville, the program will be rounded out with Komitas’s “Armenian Folk Songs for String Quartet,” and Pavel Haas’s Quartet no. 2, “From the Monkey Mountains.”

The Ulysses has a Maritime component: the first violinist, Christina Bouey, remembered for her brilliant solo recital in the Garden Room a few years ago, grew up on Prince Edward Island. She is scheduled, along with the pianist from that first recital, New Brunswick’s Pierre-André Doucet, to give another solo recital in the Garden Room on May 3, the last concert of the 2019-2020 season: the William Marshall Bishop Memorial Concert.

LOVE AND SONG: THE MUSICAL MARRIAGE OF DON AND ANNA OSBURN Kim Barlow

Music brought them together, and the life they’ve made has had music at the centre of it ever since. In the summer of 1972, two eighteen-year-old fellas from the States went on a road-trip to Canada. At a campground in Nova Scotia, they heard the siren call of Anna and her sister Kate, sitting by a fire singing, Kate strumming a guitar. Don and his buddy grabbed their guitars and headed over, drawn “like bees to honey,” as the girls’ mother would say it later. Don was a seasoned musician already, fronting bands and working paying gigs since ninth grade in Delaware.

Anna was impressed to hear a boy who could sing harmonies, and Don’s version of “Sweet Judy Blue Eyes” won her heart.

The young couple spent some years in Delaware, started a family, and came back to Nova Scotia to raise their girls. What follows is a long list of musical achievements that have helped to make the Annapolis Valley the vibrant cultural landscape we enjoy today.

Don and Anna Osburn have poured their passion and energy into making music happen here for years. They spent a summer at Upper Clements Park, where Don performed and programmed music, and which led to the formation of his long-running band the Lustre Brothers. During these years, Don and Anna organized shows at community halls, and helped start the Fundy Folk series, which is still going strong at the Evergreen Theatre in Margaretsville. They programmed the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival for several years.

In 2001, Anna, her now-adult daughters, and her sister Kate, opened the Union Street Café in Berwick, which quickly became a musical hub in the province. Not busy enough yet, Anna and Don founded the Deep Roots Cooperative and started a music festival, to bring the different cultures of the Maritimes to the stage. This is a very condensed list of everything this couple has contributed musically over the years, and it is still ongoing.

During those years, Anna’s role was more behind-the-scenes. She is a fine songwriter,

and co-wrote many of the songs that Don performed solo and with the Lustre Brothers.

They laugh as they tell me that she is more exacting than Don, and a song isn’t finished until she is satisfied that it is so. In recent years Don has stepped back from performing, while Anna has joined a large ukulele group in Woodville, and started playing an instrument for the first time in her life. She was always a singer, though rarely on stage. Now she says that accompanying herself on ukulele has shown her a whole new relationship to her voice. It is freeing, and she sings better and more joyfully. Don is enjoying the shift, and they are writing songs together again, and belting them out, strumming side by side.

Music has been central in their lives, and its role reflects the ups and downs of a marriage.

It can be a source of friction, and it can also be healing. These days Don and Anna are enjoying the new direction their musical journey has taken. In May, Anna’s ukulele group, The High Strung Stringband, will present a spring concert at the Woodville Hall. Don and Anna will get on stage together, and lead the large group on a new co-write. Their daughters Jen and Meagan, who have almost unavoidably become fine musicians themselves, will join with their band The Dearlies, with Rebecca MacDonald. Musical events often act as punctuation in a life. This will be a sweet exclamation point in a long adventure full of love and song.
