So it never fails to amaze me when, handing my children their new school supplies, I’m met with groans of, “Noooo! Don’t remind me of school!” I wish everyone pursuing an education a successful and enjoyable year, despite some possible initial reluctance.

Inner Sun Yoga has been offering classes in Wolfville for over 10 years, and yet, there are still residents who don’t know it exists. Two years after Inner Sun opened they began to offer teacher training to ensure there were teachers with a focus on injury prevention and healing. They have a strong focus on ahimsa, a principle of non-violence towards the earth and all beings with roots in Hinduism and Jainism. For most of Inner Sun’s history they have had their electricity bullfrog powered, so being environmentally responsible is not new.

As for other initiatives; Inner Sun offers the lowest cost yoga teacher training each year, with the most experienced teachers in the province. They are very serious about providing yoga that is health-promoting which is why they offer this training to up to 10 students per year. Carol says she is very fortunate to work with dedicated teachers and students committed to self-care, both body and mind, and to also have a family that supports her work.

All of the Inner Sun teachers agree it is time to step up their efforts even more, so all have agreed to teach for FREE the first two weeks of September! Of course, a free-will donation will be accepted, but the classes are being offered for free to those who go.

BERWICK GALA DAYS 2019 HIGHLIGHTS Since the first “Gala Day” in 1945, Berwick’s yearly celebration has been about bringing the community together, with a special focus on young people. 100% of the money raised from Berwick Gala Days goes back to youth groups in the community and surrounding areas. Last year Berwick Gala Days gave back over $11, 000 to local youth groups. One more reason to join in all the fun! EGG FARMERS OF NS DONATE A YEAR’S SUPPLY OF EGGS TO BRIGADOON

Welcome to Kentville! Much like the college you have chosen, Kentville has a great deal to offer. There are many services available to you, including recreation, fitness, spiritual, retail, banking, and health and wellness.

“Supporting local communities is important, and supporting Brigadoon Village is a great way to give back,” says Jeff Clarke, Chair, Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia. “I am so pleased that we were able to donate to the camp for a second consecutive year to help support their healthy eating program and educate the kids about cooking and eating eggs. It is a feelgood event, and one we are proud to be a part of.”

Visit one of the many downtown shops, all are locally owned and operated. Stop in to chat, and learn what it means to be an entrepreneur in a small town. Our pubs, cidery, and cafés are second to none and will soon become your favourites. Each has its own special menu and selection to tantalize the taste buds. Kentville can boast one of the first brew pubs in NS, and an axe throwing Lounge at HaliMac (put a team together and join one of their leagues or get together for a special evening out).

If you ask one of Brigadoon’s campers what their favourite activity is, there is a good chance the answer will be cooking. And thanks to a significant donation from the Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia the cost of eggs for programs like this are one less thing Brigadoon Village needs to worry about.

The Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia recently committed to supplying all the eggs the Village needs for a year, plus a cash donation of $3,000 to go towards healthy food programming.

“With over 800 kids attending Brigadoon Village’s camps this summer and even more through the fall and winter, you can imagine how many eggs are used over the course of the year,” says Executive Director David Graham.

“This donation from the Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia is unique and incredibly valuable to us.

Every dollar, or egg in this case, that is donated gives more opportunities for extraordinary kids to visit Brigadoon Village.”

The Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia joined this week’s Brigadoon campers to help lead their cooking adventure. “So many of our campers have dietary restrictions, but through our cooking program they learn how to prepare their own meals that meet their needs and of course, taste good!” said Graham.

Brigadoon Village will welcome 800 kids this summer for camp, and several hundred more for camps and programs through the fall, winter, and spring.

CANNING KITCHEN PARTY UPDATE Kim Barlow

The Canning Kitchen Party was launched on June 1 at the Village Coffeehouse, with music from the Dearlies, Mika Francis, and Cristian Quirivan, and it was packed to the rafters and spilling out onto the street. What a surprise and a delight it has been this summer, to see the support and enthusiasm of the community as we bring great live music to Canning every week all summer long. It’s a big wheel now, rolling and rolling along.

Partly inspired by the strong response to this series, The Music In Communities Cooperative Ltd. was formed, to continue with these kinds of projects, and to advocate for music literacy and engagement. It started as a small idea but is growing - the Co-op aims to bring music workshops, camps, open groups, and concerts to communities in Nova Scotia, and work with schools, youth, and marginalized communities, to share music in meaningful and beneficial ways. There will be more news on this initiative in the months ahead.

Meanwhile, there is still more great music coming up. On August 24, the Kitchen Party

celebrates the bounty of Kings County with Taproot Farms. Taproot manifests so much of what is exciting and hopeful in our region right now, using sustainable farming practices to bring delicious, healthy food to our tables.

They’ll cook up a feast of jerk pork, corn on the cob, and salads, followed by Heather Kelday and Ida Red tunes in the events tunnel.

This show is $25 for food and music.

There is more! The Kitchen Party continues on August 31 with Mark Riley playing gospel & blues at the Canning Baptist Church (2223 North Avenue), on September 7, when Canning’s own Andy Webster will perform at the ArtCan Gallery & Café, and on September 14, when the eaon fanale concert will feature Sarah McInnis & the Dearlies outside at the Farmhouse Inn B&B (ArtCan if it rains).

Bring your bathing suit and get ready to have fun at the Water Palooza hosted in Rainforth Park. An hour packed with water games and lots of fun!

The Town of Kentville offers a full slate of recreational and fitness opportunities. Drop in to town hall and the recreation department or check out our website at kentville.ca for a full schedule of events or equipment available for loan. There are many sponsored events, including yoga and belly dancing. The Town hosted its second Canada Cup Mountain Bike race event at the Gorge in August, and by all accounts it was a great success. Perhaps you have always wanted to try mountain biking?

This is your chance. A walk at Miner’s Marsh, a Ducks Unlimited trail, can provide the solace and inspiration needed when your brain is in overdrive from studying. The ravine at the Agricultural Research Station is the perfect four-season getaway. Loaner snowshoes are available at the recreation department all winter. The rail trail that winds through town is a small section of the Harvest Moon Trail.

The Harvest Moon Trail is a 110 kilometre trail that covers the Valley from Grand-Pré to Annapolis Royal.

The Town is serviced by Kings Transit, a public transit service that operates from Weymouth to Wolfville. All buses are WIFI enabled and offer an economical way of travelling throughout the Valley. Check out their website at kingstransit.ns.ca or download their app to track your bus.

If you are interested in volunteering, the Kings Volunteer Resource Centre can help you to find the perfect match. Kentville has a very active Rotary Club, and many service clubs that may offer an opportunity to network and connect with folks in your chosen field.

Be sure to connect with the Valley Regional Entreprise Network (REN) Valley Connector Program (connector@valleyren.ca) to learn more about making connections and networking in your chosen field. The Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce (AVCC) has a very active and supportive Young Business Leaders (YBL) committee.

THE 82ND ANNUAL WESTERN KINGS COMMUNITY FAIR: SEPTEMBER 7 This annual event, otherwise known as the Tremont World Fair, is usually held on the first Saturday of the Labour Day weekend.

This year though, the date has been changed to September 7. According to organizers, the change was made this year to account for the the fact that 14 Wing Greenwood is hosting an air show on August 31. The high noise level from the aircraft might bother the animals, and so the date change was

made to ensure that everyone — visitors, exhibitors, and animals had a safe and fun time at the fair this year. Check out Western Kings Community Fair (Tremont World Fair) on Facebook for more information about this great event happening in Tremont on September 7 this year.

DINNER OUT (AWAY!): ALO Scott Campbell

Welcome to Alo - the best restaurant in Canada. That’s a prestigious designation to be sure, but this little gem located on Spadina Avenue in downtown Toronto has proudly earned it.

In 2017 Alo topped the list of the 100 top restaurants in Canada. In 2018, it did it again.

Our culinary adventure began with yellow tail sashimi and tuna tartare. The fresh tuna in both dishes was bright and flavourful and seasoned perfectly. It was a perfect way to start our dinner. Next up was jamon Iberico and French cheese with pickled red onions and truffles. This was a bit of an international experience with the traditionally Spanish ham combined with the French cheese. The smooth silky texture of the jamon Iberico and warm cheese alongside the strong flavours of the onions and truffles were spectacular.

Our next dish was veal chop, scallops with pea puree, and Caesar salad. Again, the brilliant chefs at Alo didn’t miss the mark. The tender veal was cooked and seasoned perfectly but allowed to stand alone on its richness. The sweet familiar flavour of the scallop worked incredibly well with the pea purée and both were enhanced by the tangy brightness of the Caesar salad.

Our final treat for the evening was lamb tenderloin, sautéed chanterelles, and ricotta agnolotti. This course was saved for the end

and was one of the richest meals I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying. The lamb was so tender it was literally falling apart. The chanterelles were an impeccable accompaniment to the lamb and the perfectly cooked agnolotti and deliciously smooth ricotta finished the meal off wonderfully.

So, if you find yourself in Toronto and you have a special occasion to celebrate I would heartily recommend you treat yourself to Alo. Cheers.

FISH TALES Anna Horsnell

Rachel Reeve has fish stories like no other.

Her studio walls are hung with precise images of actual fish, caught here in Nova Scotia, recorded using an age-old printing method which originated in Japan. How and why is an interesting story on its own.

Reeve has an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, which seems totally fitting for this highly creative artist. As an art educator and printmaker, she also works in mixed media, design, and installations with found and repurposed objects. She loves innovation and being resourceful, and finding things and seeing the potential for something new, which generally means she has multiple projects on the go at any given time. “There is something really exciting about that,” she explains. “It’s all about growth.”

Part of that growing process took Reeve to Japan where she taught English from 1998 to 2001. There she found her own affinity for nature was mirrored in Japanese culture, and her art making was enriched through the experience of living and working in that atmosphere. She exhibited her own work during this period, but she was also soaking up new ideas and inspiration for the future.

Back in Nova Scotia, a chance conversation with a friend about a fish he had caught reminded her of a very old and unique type of printing she had discovered while living abroad. Gyotaku is a type of printing from nature which originated in Japan during the mid1800s. Fishermen eager to record their catch devised a method of making a detailed print from the actual fish they had caught. Non-toxic ink was brushed directly on the fish before carefully pressing rice paper over the fish to lift off a permanent image. The fish could then be easily cleaned and eaten with the proof safely preserved. This was easy in theory perhaps, but required patience and skill to achieve accurate results. Reeve managed to record her friend’s American shad and soon added images of bass and perch to what has now become a series.

Reeve is eager to connect with local fishermen as she would like to record a broader range of

fish for a future exhibit. At first, her project was simply about the printing process, but has expanded to questions about what fish mean to us, and the problem of invasive species like the chain pickerel now found in local waterways. The artwork has also developed from simple prints to collages combining Japanese papers on canvas. They pose timely questions and suggest symbolism and historical markers.

The artist’s property in Greenwich is an oasis of thoughtfully planned rock gardens, pathways, and selected trees she has planted, like pine and Japanese maples. Her home and art are all about “honouring the natural world” and her studio attests to this dedication.

Drawings of pheasants and bats, a cardinal’s nest, and a multitude of fish prints fill the space, interspersed with a curiosity of found objects destined for new purpose. Sustainability is perhaps equally important to Reeve and she marries these interests together through her art.

TWO PLANKS AND A PASSION THEATRE PREMIERES THE RUINS BY GILLIAN CLARK Submitted

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre Company continues its 2019 outdoor season with the world premiere of Gillian Clark’s play The Ruins, beginning previews on August 22 and running through September 1.

Gillian Clark’s new play is a contemporary adaptation of The Trojan Women by Euripides. It’s the night of the annual spring fire hall dance in New Troy, Nova Scotia. The parents are dancing in the hall, and the kids are playing in the field, as they have every other year. But this year, something is different. Cassandra (Jackie Torrens) has seen the future of her little town, and no one will believe her. Performed around a roaring fire, The Ruins is an innovative, surprising adaptation that makes one of our oldest stories startlingly new.

Directed by Ken Schwartz, the production features some of the region’s most accomplished theatre artists, including Burgandy Code, Ryan Rogerson, Devin MacKinnon, Jeff Schwager, Jackie Torrens, Geneviève Steele, Hilary Adams, and Mary Fay Coady. The

production is stage managed by Robin Munro.

The Ruins runs from August 22 to September 1 at 8pm. at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts near Canning, NS. Seating is very limited and tickets can be purchased in advance at artscentre.ca or by calling 902 582 3073.

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia will mark its forty-eighth season with the first staged adaptation of three favourite contemporary storybooks. Directed to very young audiences, the hour-long production, It’s Okay to Be Different – Stories by Todd Parr will be launched in 2020-2021.

Todd Parr is the author and illustrator of more than 40 books for children, including the New York Times bestsellers The I Love You Book, The Earth Book, and The Thankful Book. His books are available in over forty countries throughout the world. He was also the co-creator of the three-time Emmy-nominated children’s television show ToddWorld™, and has created several short films for Sesame Street.

“It’s inspiring for me to see my books come to life on stage, especially with Mermaid Theatre,” says Parr. “I’ve always believed that storytime should be a fun and exciting time for my readers. Now seeing them come alive on stage will be the ultimate experience for young and old alike.”

Animal lovers out there (and I know there’s lots), let me introduce you to someone very special: Nahleen Ashton! I grew up without a pet, minus a plastic fish named Dolores, so being introduced to Nahleen has been a wonderful experience. This Who’s Who is literally for the dogs!

Nahleen was born in Montreal, but her younger years were spent in the Laurentians in Quebec. Totally enveloped in a French culture, she spoke mostly French with her friends and neighbours but went to an English school along with her brother and sisters. Life in the country offered a freedom likely not granted to some city kids and she always had many animals at home.

“Caring for the dogs and cats that shared my life, as well as the neighbours’ horses, was a great focus of mine, which probably started my passion for animals,” Nahleen says.

“When I was 14 my mother became involved with a man in Nova Scotia. After some time, my mother, my brother, myself, and our dog Nipper (my best friend) all made the move to NS to become part of his family. I returned to Montreal but always in the back of my mind I felt I would come back to NS. That time finally came about 15 years ago when I moved to Bridgetown with my husband and our animals to start a grooming and boarding business.”

Nahleen’s passion for animals was always there, showing up in various ways as she cared for her own pets as well as volunteering for local rescues and shelters in Montreal. Eventually she couldn’t disregard that special feeling and connection so she started boarding dogs in her home. She really enjoyed caring for other people’s pets and assuring they were be safe and well cared for while they travelled.

“I had a friend who was a groomer,” she says, “and watching her piqued my interest enough that I eventually took an intense grooming course in Montreal so that I could add that to my services as well. I also took reiki, TTouch, and homeopathic first aid. I started all over again building a successful kennel boarding/ daycare and grooming business in Bridgetown.

Throughout the 13 years there I have met many wonderful dogs and their people. My talents increased and I took more courses, all to benefit the dogs in my kennel and in my home.

I went to shows to improve my grooming skills and worked with trainers to improve my dog speak. I also worked closely with several rescue groups, fostering over a hundred dogs both in the kennel and in my home.”

Nahleen’s dedication to animals is infectious and inspiring, and, she points out, “caring for another and being responsible for an animal that depended on my dedication to make sure it was safe, fed, and well really gave me a sense and purpose I had never had before. Over the years that has carried through and today I still feel the very same whether it be one of my own dogs and cats, a dog that I am grooming

or a foster who is living with us until the day when it’s ready to find its very own home. I use a comprehensive view when sharing time with any animal, always respectful of their needs and capabilities.”

Nahleen had been fostering dogs for more than 15 years and over time her heart really began to focus on the special needs of the dogs, so five years ago she created Misfit Manor Dog Rescue. She says, “Misfit Manor is a NS rescue focused on dogs with health needs, seniors, and compassionate care cases.

Since its debut, Misfit Manor Dog Rescue has taken in over 200 animals. Many of these dogs would never have gotten the extensive care needed for them to overcome the medical issues they faced without the support of Misfit. As a registered charity, we rely on the generosity of the public to help fund the care as well. Because we are dedicated to extreme cases, we remain a small rescue so that each dog in our care can receive whatever they require for their specialized issue. Issues such as major medical orthopedic surgeries, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, and physical disabilities. As you can imagine, the daily organizing of vet visits, fundraisers, surrenders, foster homes, supplies, transports and all other details surrounding the rescue take up a lot of my time but we love what we do!”

When there is time to enjoy other pursuits, this area has lent itself well to Nahleen and she loves everything it offers. She fully embraces the cultural and social activities and also access to shopping and restaurants. She is a food lover and vegan so finding fresh local ingredients as well as restaurants that could accommodate her lifestyle was part of the deciding factor to stay. Both Nahleen and her husband also wanted somewhere that they could incorporate their businesses and so far, so GREAT! When Nahleen is not putting her full attention on puppies and kitties, she has found so many new hiking trails since she moved here.

And professionally and personally she is constantly looking for new things to learn: “I have a long list of books on the sideline covering healthcare, training, working with senior dogs who have canine cognitive disorders and other subjects that will help me be a better human to the dogs that I meet.”

WINDSOR’S CEDAR CENTRE RECEIVES BUILT HERITAGE AWARD Ethan Lang

Last month, the Cedar Centre for Active and Healthy Living received one of the five Built Heritage Awards given out yearly by the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia to call attention to excellence in the conservation of heritage buildings in the province. The award was presented on July 6, in an event hosted by the Cedar Centre, recognizing the facility’s work in renovating the old Windsor Furniture Company factory building to meet the Centre’s modern needs, while retaining the character and integrity of the original architecture.

The building in which the Cedar Centre now operates was originally constructed in 1872 for the production of furniture. It would be rebuilt following the great fire of Windsor in 1897, and finally closed for its original purpose in 1928. The building served different functions afterwards, becoming an elementary school, then an office for the RCMP, before coming full circle as a furniture storage warehouse and then a furniture store, before its current iteration as The Cedar Centre for Active Health & Living.

The building has been home to the Cedar Centre since the facility opened its doors in 2013, but most of the renovations and restorations for which the Centre is now being recognized had been started or completed before that time, with work having commenced in January 2011.

On the exterior, the roof has been redone, but the traditional post and beam, brick-filled style remains. This facade keeps the original industrial look of the building intact.

Inside, the clinic operates on the factory floor, with the mission of promoting active and healthy living. The Centre offers a range of services including yoga, massage, and child psychiatry; rentals for meetings, functions, and private or community events; as well as art exhibits and musical recitals.

The chief service though, is medical exercise therapy. It is a form of treatment which encourages rehabilitation and prevention of injury and muscular or skeletal conditions through active exercises, as well as maintaining biomechanical function through practice as we age. There is an emphasis on training

the nervous system to improve coordination, balance, timing, rhythm, and orientation.

As such, maximum mental engagement is required. According to Dr. Matthias Jaepel, the recent renovations on the clinic used the building’s original factory layout to complement the practice of medical exercise therapy and its need for focus.

“It is paramount in health care,” writes Dr. Jaepel, “to provide an open and encouraging atmosphere...That’s what’s needed to heal in many cases.”

The building’s ninety windows -- all recently replaced -- provide lots of soothing natural light throughout the clinic. The open layout of the factory was only divided partially in a conscious effort to keep a non-restricting atmosphere. There is also a fresh new concrete floor and a new heating system on the way, contributing to the calm, relaxing quality of the facility.

“The result of the renovation absolutely coaligns with the centre’s philosophy of openness and transparency,” says Dr. Jaepel, By capitalizing on these aspects of the factory design while restoring and renovating, the Cedar Centre holds on to the charm of the factory brick and open loft floors, while creating a spirit all its own. It is this marrying of the heritage of the building with the needs of the Cedar Centre, the keeping of the old when helpful and adding the new when necessary, that has earned the facility the Built Heritage Award.

In medical exercise therapy, the constant training of biomechanical motions is meant to strengthen and improve the function of the body. If the body is moving with full range of function, a person is healthy. If we train these motions all our lives, constantly challenging functional capacity through self-discipline and exercise, the body will continue to heal and come back stronger, maintaining and even improving health well into the later stages of life. As Dr. Jaepel puts it, “we all get older, but we don’t have to age.” It is as true of old buildings as it is of people.

DEEP ROOTS ANNOUNCES 16TH VALLEY ARTS AWARD Submitted

First presented in 2004 to Jack Sheriff, founder of Theatre Arts Festival International and the Kipawo Showboat Company, the Valley Arts Award honours individuals who have made a significant long-term contribution to the arts in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. The presentation of the annual award is a highlight of the Festival Finale at the Deep Roots Music Festival in September.

This year’s honouree is François Côté. A Quebec City native, François calls himself a dilettante, but there are many would deem him more of an impresario. He first came to Wolfville in 1979 when he participated in the Katimavik program as an 18-year-old. He returned to attend Acadia University from 1983-86, where he gained a name for himself as the producer of the Crossroads Coffeehouses in the Michener Lounge – and directed a production of ‘Godspell’ for the Musicadians.

Then after five years selling art in Quebec, he moved back to Wolfville to stay. He taught French immersion and later worked for VIA Rail, all the while fostering the Valley musical community in many ways.

A self-taught musician, François found music becoming an ever more important part of his life. As singer and wind instruments player, he collaborated with fine local musicians Cathy Porter, Ken Shorley, Jude Pelley and Mike MacKay, to form Ensemble à Part, a medieval French music combo. The group’s final performance was at the first Deep Roots Music Festival in 2004. Two years later, he took on the programming of Deep Roots; he programmed four editions, happily bringing some of his favourite musicians to town.

François says he’s proud to have witnessed the lasting connections many made with the Valley’s music community. A sold-out concert with Old Crow Medicine Show and Matt Andersen was a highlight of his fundraising efforts for Deep Roots.

François’s musicality and his love of collaborating have led him to connect with, and support, many local musicians. He has appeared

at Night Kitchen and other local events, on his own and with other performers. At house parties and jams the sound of his flutes rises sweetly above the mix. He has promoted the work of local songwriters. Recently François has developed his piano skills, and while leading a walking tour in Wolfville, he would end up at the Waterfront Park gazebo, where he would play and sing Rick MacNab’s beautiful song about the area, “The Ghost of Evangeline”. In 2018, François took over the part-time position of coordinator of the Acadia Performing Arts Series. The series has been bringing a variety of fine musicians to Wolfville for generations and he’s keen about the upcoming line-up.

Passionate about raising funds for the worldwide landmines cause, François dreams of bringing Joan Baez and Mary Gauthier back to the Valley, along with other iconic songwriters, for a benefit.

The Valley Arts Award presentation will be Sunday afternoon, September 29th, at the Festival Theatre in Wolfville, during the Festival Finale. That afternoon’s program, hosted

MARIE’S REPORT: NEWCOMERS NEEDLEWORK INTEREST GROUP Marie Mossman, a writer of the round table If you enjoy needlework while chatting with friendly people, the Newcomers needlework interest group is for you. As one member said, “It’s not about what you’re making or how good you are, it’s about getting together.”

Another needleworker said, “It doesn’t matter how crummy your work is, you’re accepted.”

Friendships formed while working on individual projects are the top benefit of the group.

Valuable is the help offered by those with greater expertise, to correct a stitch, turn a heel, or solve another thorny problem.

Knitting is the most popular craft, but crossstitch, embroidery, mending, quilting, and rug hooking are all worked on by participants.

Your project isn’t listed here? Fine, bring it along to the next meeting and share your enthusiasm for your craft with others.

The group was started six years ago when a recent arrival to the area mentioned she wished the Newcomers club had a needlework interest group. She was told, “You can start one!” A

sign-up sheet was put out at the Newcomers club meeting.

Four to six people came to the first needlework meetings. Now ten to twenty persons come twice a month on Mondays, even over the summer. Members bring folding chairs or sit on a stair if the group is large. Individuals host a meeting if they can, and often those who cannot host offer to bring the snack.

Twice a year the needleworkers gather for a potluck dinner, usually during the Christmas season and in June, because friends delight in sharing a meal. Membership remains open for new needlework enthusiasts.

At Acadia

WHAT’S GROWING: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Melanie Priesnitz

After a summer filled with hard work and a great deal of learning, the students who worked on our team at the K.C. Irving Environment Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens are heading back to the classroom. We had the pleasure of having Acadia student Ted Morris and Nova Scotia Community College student April Mason work with us as student native plant conservationists and interpreters. Ted is studying environmental and sustainability studies in the community development department at Acadia and April is a student of horticulture and landscape technology at NSCC. Their positions involved tending our 6-acre native plant botanical garden as well as leading public tours.

When I asked Ted what his most profound experience was at work this summer, he recounted the tale of the day that a swarm of honey bees decided to take up residency in the garden. Ted and April were standing in chest waders in the middle of our marsh clearing algae when they heard a great buzz. They soon realized that a swarm of bees was forming on a red maple tree just above them. As neat as it was to have a thousand bees hanging out in the garden, we weren’t sure all of our visitors would agree so we made a quick call for help.

Perry Brandt onsite within the hour to capture and relocate the swarm. Perry quickly explained how docile a swarm of honey bees is so we could all relax and watch as he knowledgeably captured the swarm. He shared with us a wealth of information on bee behaviour while calmly working away on the relocation and setting up of the new hive. This is the type of experiential and spontaneous learning that happens every day when working outside in the natural world.

When I asked April what she gained from working with us this summer she said laughingly “our lives have forever changed.” Ted and April both reflected on the fact that they now have new eyes whenever they walk in the woods. They will forever see the plants in the forest in a different light. They can now call many of our native plants by name (latin and common) and notice when invasive species are lurking about. Ted enjoyed having his personal experience broadened this summer and enjoyed gaining a new outlook on the natural world. April believes that she will take back much of the knowledge she gained on native plants into the year ahead while studying horticulture.

Once a week our team of summer students in the garden doubled when Christianne

Hagerman and Jake Reicker joined us.

Christianne and Jake both graduated from Acadia this year and worked in our herbarium as research assistants for the summer. Every Monday we teamed up to tackle invasive species in the garden, focusing on weeding out two of the invasive maple trees that we battle: sycamore and Norway. Christianne, who graduated with a BSc in biology and nutrition, said that her “least favourite part of the job, funnily enough, has not been the hours spent in muddy bogs, swarmed by mosquitoes - it was the time spent staring at a computer screen, entering data!” Although she assured us that even that part wasn’t that bad! Christianne explained how she thrived in the hands-on work environment this summer and learned something about herself through it. “I realized that I have an amazing memory when I can feel and see what it is that I am learning about. Whether it’s spending time in the garden discovering invasive species, out in the field exploring old-growth forests, or determining aspects of plant physiology as I use a phylogenetic key to determine the ID of a specimen - my brain soaks up new information when it’s in a hands-on format!”

Jake, who loves Acadia so much that he took a second major in environmental science after completing his honours degree in biology

(co-op option), spent most of the summer working with Christianne and others in the E.C. Smith Herbarium. When asked about the work environment this summer he said “the atmosphere is one of constant learning. Even our supervisors are quick to ask questions when they are unsure on a topic. Having this sort of relatability with your supervisors instills confidence in student employees and helps us build personality to bring with us into future endeavors.”

These are the stories of just four of the students who spent their summer working, playing, and learning at the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens, there are many more. We want to thank all of the students who brought so much energy and enthusiasm to our workplace this summer and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours. We’d also like to thank Canada Summer Jobs Youth Employment Strategy and the Canadian Museums Association: Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage for their contributions that made hiring summer students and new graduates possible.

LETTER OF WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 2023 AND RETURNING ACADIA STUDENTS Jeff Cantwell

It is my distinct pleasure, as mayor of the Town of Wolfville, to welcome you to our unique and very special community. I use the term community rather than town deliberately, for a few reasons but the most significant is that virtually everybody residing in this town knows their neighbour and/or their neighbour’s neighbour. You’ve all heard about “the six degrees of separation,” well there are zero degrees of separation here in Wolfville. I encourage you to make time and take time to introduce yourself to your neighbours.

Another reason I use the term community is that over the 181 years of Acadia’s presence in Wolfville, and after the many tens of thousands of Acadia students before you who have lived in those very dorms and apartments where you find yourselves today, many have chosen to stay here in Wolfville and have helped to lead, drive, and grow our

community and economy into what is currently referred to as the most distinct and robust small town in all of Atlantic Canada. We are proud of our community, proud of Acadia, and proud so many Acadia graduates have opted to remain in, or return to, Wolfville.

As in your academic life, where you seek answers from faculty or “upper classmates” to questions or problems which plague you about the sciences or arts or business, please, in your day-to-day civic life, take time to seek answers from your “community upper classmates,” those local neighbours who, like you but many years before you, sought similar answers to those very same “life” questions.

Those “less tech savvy and more mature” folks (that would describe me) who stand beside you at the grocery store, the bank, the coffee shop or, yes, even the liquor store, were once the same young and curious members of the

Wolfville and Acadia communities not all that many years ago, so go ahead and ask.

While you are here at Acadia, do yourself a favour and engage in some of the things which will really leave an impression or create memories you will truly cherish, rather than create memories you might prefer to forget. Catch a sunrise from the Look Off during harvest season, hike Cape Split, you will not regret it, and get familiar with our walking and biking trails.

Check out our Farmers’ Market on Wednesday evenings and particularly Saturday mornings for that fix you will undoubtedly be seeking.

Volunteer for something in the community to round out your resumé and to familiarise yourself with the world which will be yours for the next four or five years: figure skating, scouting or guiding organisations, the volunteer fire department. There is much here to fill

your resumé. When you graduate employers and grad schools will be looking for successful students and well-rounded, community leaders.

Get out and explore your surroundings. It is said “these are the best days of your life”. That is true, but really, these are the days of your life when you will never have less responsibility thrust upon you. Take advantage of it now.

These days are like a “time mortgage”. You will have the next 40 years plus (if you’re lucky), to remember, enjoy and pay back this time.

So get out and appreciate them and again, welcome. Now, go get acquainted with your new home and like home, get to know and respect your neighbours. You will not regret it, and it will make living here that much more enjoyable and memorable.
