“I live in Garland’s Crossing — my wife and I have lived here for 37 years. I’ve travelled all over North America and wherever I go, whenever someone asks me where I’m from, I’m from Hantsport Nova Scotia and I will always be from Hantsport Nova Scotia,” says Kevin Guptell, one of the key organizers of the Hantsport Music Fest. “I love the community, I love what it did for me, I loved growing up there and we just want people to get off the highway and to come into our community — to drive through Mount Denson, in through Bluff Road and Avonport, up through West Brooklyn mountain and out to Bishopville, out to Blue Beach — there are great places to come and see — it’s just a great little community.”

Getting people into Hantsport was really the idea that sparked the creation of the Hantsport Music Fest. The registered non-profit community music festival is now gearing up for its fifth year, and the team behind the scenes has put together the pieces for another fantastic event.

This year on Saturday, July 21, the organizers expect about 1400 people in the audience at the Foundry Road Sports Field, where they’ll listen to some great Atlantic Canadian bands.

It’s the sort of production only an entire community can organize - and that’s exactly the story behind the Hantsport Music Fest.

Kevin has been a part of the festival since the beginning, and back when the idea was just in it’s infancy, he didn’t initially see it as a real possibility. “We talked and I said you guys are nuts,” he laughs, recalling the first few planning sessions he had with the original crew of organizers, Fred Martin and Chris Cuvilier.

It all started in the midst of what was a hard time for the community. “Hantsport was going through a process where they lost two of their major businesses in town. There was no money in the community. They had some hard choices to make,” Kevin recalls.

Making something good happen for the community was going to be up to those who loved it. “If we waited for other people to do it, it wasn’t going to get done,” Kevin says, “So we jumped in and took a leap of faith.”

Despite his earlier reservations, the idea caught on and received relatively immediate support from the wider community “The first year we had 56 sponsors, from as far away as Egypt,” Kevin says.

“Our goal is to promote the community of Hantsport — which to us includes Falmouth, Mount Denson, Bishopville, Lockhartville, Avonport, West Brooklyn, Hants Border and of course Hantsport.” Kevin explains. “In the first year, We had four bands and we had 1100 people show up and it was phenomenal.”

this year the team of organizers (Raye Myles, Kevin Guptell, Teresa Rooney, Jane Kerr and Mike Guptell) are expecting about 200 volunteers on the field that day to help make sure people are enjoying themselves. They are also expecting to raise plenty of money for local community groups.

Acquiring so many sponsors means that the festival can cover its costs before the ticket sales. That means that each community group who volunteers at the festival is able to take home a sizeable donation for their organization. To date, the Hantsport Music Fest has raised over $100,000.

“When we open the gate on July 21, every dollar from the ticket sales, every profit dollar from the canteen, every profit dollar from the beer sales, will all go back to the six volunteer groups that are our worker bees,” explains Kevin. This year, the Hantsport Foodbank, the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, the Hantsport Minor Ball Association, the Hantsport Shamrocks, the Hantsport & Area Historical Society, and the Hantsport Home and School Association will all benefit from the proceeds of the festival.

“That’s pretty cool when you consider that the old town of Hantsport was around a thousand people and those little communities of Avonport, Lockartville, West Brooklyn, Bishopville, Mount Denson — there’s probably only another thousand people there, and we’re averaging 1400 at the festival,” says Kevin.

The planning though is no small feat. In fact, organizers are already busy working on next year’s festival as well. It’s no one’s full-time job, but it’s certainly a passion project. “We all work, we all have 50 plus hour a week jobs, and we all have families,” says Kevin, “But we love what we do. We’re very proud of what we do.”

This year the festival has a stellar list of bands and performers: Signal Hill, Heather Rankin, Ced Marty & Dave, Matt Balsor & the Hill Top Show Band, The No Name Blues Band, The Brooklyn Blackmore Band, and The Parsons Brothers and Friends.

“We have a great spot, in a great little community, we have great music, a great sound system, and you can’t go anywhere else and see seven bands for $25!” says Kevin. It’s going to be an event not to miss: the chance to enjoy some great music, and support a fantastic community endeavour.

THE GRAPEVINE Q&A: KEN SCHWARTZ OF TWO PLANKS AND A PASSION THEATRE For our Performing Arts issue, The Grapevine asked Ken Schwartz, artistic director of Two Planks and a Passion Theatre, about the ambitious productions in the works for this season.

The Grapevine (GV): You and Allen Cole have put together Animal Farm by Fire this year — how long have you been at work on that project and how did the idea for that show come about?

Ken Schwartz (KS): Animal Farm has been a project I have been thinking about for many years. In some ways, it’s an overdue piece of programming, given that we produce classic adaptations on our own farm, but two things have happened recently which made this choice rise to the top of the list. The first is the turbulence in world politics, which makes George Orwell a particularly important voice to revisit now, and the second is the advent of our fireside theatre, which allows us to explore well-known stories in new and unexpected ways.

Allen and I have been working on the project for the last year: I work on the book for the show, Allen composes the music, and we work on the lyrics together. We have a great working relationship which is based on many years of working together and an extensive knowledge of working musically outdoors.

GV: You’ve also adapted Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya as an outdoor theatrical production and this is the first year that the company has produced three shows — how are you managing the workload?

KS: We are producing two shows which open in early July, and the third production begins rehearsals once the first two are open. So far the schedule is working well. The three-show season allows us to make artistic choices that are more diverse, and we are excited by the opportunity.

GV: What does your typical day look like mid-winter, and what does it look like now?

KS: We are increasingly busy in the winter months at Ross Creek, but the activities are different. For the theatre, the focus in on planning, professional development, engaging artists, and working with playwrights, as well as community outreach. At the moment we are focussed on our core activity, the creation

of live theatre, and a company of fifteen people are on site and working daily.

GV: While adapting these stories for the unique performance experience Two Planks and a Passion offers, how closely do the scripts follow the originals, and where have you found the space to make them distinctive?

KS: It varies widely depending on the work and the artistic goal. In the case of Vanya, the adaptation sticks very closely to the place and time of the original (Russia in the late nineteenth century), but the physical context of the play has been largely changed so that we can exploit the theme of environmental fragility in our outdoor setting. In the case of Animal Farm, it’s a completely original musical which sticks very closely to the plot and spirit of the novel. A novel and a play are two very different art forms, so the process of adapting each of these two works is a different process from the beginning.

GV: Along with Elapultiek by shalan joudry, how do these three shows work together or speak to each other — and is that an important element in your season planning?

KS: Because we program works that we feel are relevant to an audience here today, themes do emerge, sometimes very strongly, that link the works we are producing. This might be difficult to believe, but mostly these links aren’t deliberate. They are the result of powerful undercurrents in our society as much as any effort on my part. This year all three works have a prominent and powerful theme that connects them: our relationship with the land.

Vanya is about a family struggling over the ownership of a farm and the impact of humans on the landscape, Animal Farm is a civil war over territory (in this case, a farm like our own) and Elapultiek is in part about the reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous people in Canada, and the unceded territory at the heart of that process. For a company dedicated to working with the landscape, it’s not surprising that all three of these works resonate with each other in this way. While rehearsing these plays, I often feel the echoes from one to the other, and one work does help inform the next.

It’s true. Someone actually answered a cell phone and proceeded to have a conversation in the middle of a play at CentreStage Theatre!

I know this for a fact because my sister was acting on stage. We were all gobsmacked. We need to set a good example for kids at the theatre – and even for other adults!

Some parents worry about taking their kids to live theatre, nervous about how they might behave. When asked what children get out of going to live theatre, CentreStage veteran Nancy Henry says it stimulates their imagination. “Actors pick up a stick to be a pirate, help others, go to a tea party – they can do and be anything,” says Henry. Besides, in a play, the idea of right and wrong can be taught and can hold a child’s attention in a fun way, but there are some simple tips to help make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.

1. Do your research. This might involve calling the theatre or talking to other parents who have attended the same performance. How long is the show? What is the storyline? Is it a quiet affair or are kids encouraged to interact?

Can you bring in snacks?

2. Introduce your child to the story before you go: If the performance is a well-known story, read the book to your child before you attend.

That way, they know what is coming next and can anticipate the story.

3. Don’t sweat the small stuff. There are children crying, laughing, dancing, playing, being loud and doing inappropriate things. But it’s

fun and the actors don’t mind. When you choose a show geared towards families, they expect these things, so have fun with it!

4. Know your children. My boys would never sit through a three-hour Stage Prophets production, as they don’t have the attention span, but my nieces are captivated by every moment! My boys love live music, while some kids need more action. Know your child’s interests.

5. Be willing to leave. If it’s not working, and you’ve given it a valiant try, then leave at intermission! Some things are not worth the stress! Baby steps.

6. Model good behaviour. Turn off your phone. Pay attention. Engage. Clap. Sit quietly when necessary. Your kids are watching you as much as they are watching the performance.

Our favourite productions have always been the children’s shows at CentreStage Theatre.

They have a no-shush policy. Meaning, kids aren’t told to be quiet! They can often sit on the floor at the front and fully engage in the show. They can yell out to actors, and laugh and dance, and it’s all okay and encouraged!

Most importantly, watch the reaction on your child’s face. It will make it all worthwhile!

“Happiness is knowing there is bread in the oven!”

Elizabeth Charlton, of Slow Dough fame, is a well-known Valley-based baker and cooking genius. Have you ever had her carrot cake?

Honestly folks, I pride myself on having carrot cake from corner to corner of the Maritimes and Elizabeth’s is my favourite!

The bread, the lemon cake, gluten-free, dairyfree, nut-free, chocolate-covered, whole grain: the list of her delectable treats is limitless.

This wonderful Wolfville kitchen guru is the reason a lot of us give in to our sweet tooth temptations every Saturday at the Wolfville Farmer’s Market. Elizabeth Charlton is a brilliant baker (and more).

Elizabeth Charlton was born in Chicoutimi, Quebec and then moved another 16 times in 17 years, ending up in North Bay, Ontario, where she went to high school. Her father was a forestry engineer, so every northern community possible was where they ended up. She took her first degree at Waterloo in political science, worked for a while in the House of Commons as a speech writer, and then decided to go to McGill, where she studied opera. Yes, that’s right everyone, opera!

She explains, “I sang professionally for the next fifteen years. I met and married Warren in our late thirties and had two kiddies in short order. I, never one to be idle, studied in the pastry arts program at George Brown College in Toronto. Upon completion of the program, I worked in a restaurant supply bakery and I loved it! But, life in the big city was stressful and we wanted a quieter way of life for our children. My parents were from Halifax and Warren’s folks were from the Valley so Nova Scotia had always been a draw for us.”

“Good food is all the sweeter when shared with good friends!”

Elizabeth started out at the Wolfville Farmer’s Market around 10 years ago when it was still an outdoors market (and I know I am not alone when I say how much I miss that!).

“I use only butter, no dyes or additives, and I have a complete devotion to consistency of product. As things grew over the years, Warren introduced our slow rise breads to the mix. We use very little yeast, a scant 1/2 tsp per loaf, and a long development time. We use wheat varieties grown by Longspell Point Farm in Kingsport, and the result is delicious.

Warren has also started making Montreal-style bagels which are selling really well, and it’s a great treat for folks in the Valley to have access to these unique items,” she says.

“I think our very labour-intensive way of doing things produces wonderful products, and that’s contributed to our success in a somewhat competitive market here in the Valley.”

“Baking is love made edible!”

With the creation, marketing, and stabilization of her business, Elizabeth and Warren don’t get a lot of downtime, as it goes with every entrepreneur. Their occupation is all-consuming and they work seven days a

week and have done so for the past five years.

Elizabeth did take the time to go back to her singing roots last year and she performed with the Atlantic Opera Society.

She commented, “It was a huge diversion and commitment and I sang with incredibly talented performers and had a wonderful time. Warren belongs to a men’s cooking group, Men Who Shall Cook, and has a great deal of fun eating and drinking with the guys.

In our slower times during the winter this year, I studied for and sat the Red Seal exam for baking. I was successful and now can wear the big Chef’s hat! I’m delighted as it opens different doors for my future.”

“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you bake the cake!”

The Wolfville Farmer’s Market, which I’m sure everyone reading this will agree, is a brilliant blessing to our community! The Wolfville Farmer’s Market has fostered an integral network of local food growers and producers which is very attractive in a community and Elizabeth and Warren have been fortunate enough to add their food to this network and develop relationships with like-minded individuals.

Besides the Farmer’s Market, Elizabeth was at the helm of the Slow Dough Bakery on Main Street, Wolfville until its recent closing. “I am very proud of the business, Slow Dough Bakery. The devotion my entire family has committed to it over the years has enriched our lives and hopefully the lives of the people who are loyal to our products, but now we are stepping away from our shop on Main Street and this will allow us to develop new areas of growth,” says Elizabeth. “We will continue to be at the Wolfville Farmer’s Market on Wednesday evenings and on Saturdays, expanding our savoury line, and we are also participants in WFM2Go, which is a great new system for delivering farm market materials to a wider audience. We are developing a bread CSA for pictk up at The Wool ‘N Tart, starting sometime in summer 2018. I would also like to develop a series of baking lessons, but that is all just running around in my brain right now.”

Well, let’s hope that brain never stops cooking up new ideas! To Elizabeth, Warren, and future of the foremost carrot cake ever: all the best!

The Firefly Eco Cabin will be built at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. It will function as an exhibit for visitors to interact with and explore, including information about how the building works. The Eco Cabin will also be a space to accommodate visitors, such as

professional art instructors and artists in residency. This project is completely not-forprofit and community driven. The Ross Creek Centre for the Arts is a registered non-profit, and the project will be completed with the help of volunteers.

GASPEREAU ART MARKET SPECIAL This year, the much-anticipated Gaspereau Art Market will take place on Saturday July 7, 2018.

For this special edition of The Art Spot, we asked three participating artists to answer our questions about their work and what inspires them

Where: I work out of my own studio, a log cabin near my house. I sell my work directly to customers at select markets, like the Gaspereau Art Market, and occasionally from my studio by appointment.

Jewelry-maker Misty Cogswell

When: I’m still not completely comfortable defining myself as an artist. I came to it as a “career” after leaving a twenty- year career as a biologist working in conservation biology. I prefer to work in the mornings and evenings and give my afternoons over to more mundane tasks.

Who: I currently live in Black Rock with my husband and two daughters. I love nature and recycling. I started jewelry roughly ten years ago, and have been experimenting and learning with different styles, techniques, and mediums ever since.

What: I create jewelry because it can incorporate any number of mediums. I have never been great at sticking to just one thing, but silver, copper, brass, and wood are some of the most common ones I work with. I believe my style comes from nature as well as from the recycled materials I use. They have an important impact on the design and the way it is created.

Where: I work on my jewelry in a small workshop attached to my home.

I only sell at a few shows a year: the Gaspereau Art Market (in July), the Wolfville Artisan Market, and the Union St. Christmas Fair (both around November). I also do custom pieces and can be reached at misty_cogswell@ hotmail.com When: I really had to think about this one.

I’m not sure at what point I defined myself as an artist. I think it started to sink in when I was invited to Art Markets. I realize the talent around me and I am honoured to be included as an artist. I work on my jewellery whenever I can find time, usually afternoon to early evening. If I’m really focused on a piece I can work on it until late at night.

Why: Art, as far back as I can remember, has always been a part of my life in one form or another. I am drawn to jewelry because of the endless creative possibilities. I love creating wearable art. I was born and raised in the Annapolis Valley. The Valley is perfect for artists. It has lots of inspiration and supportive communities. It’s a great place to live.

Potter Tracy Horsman Who: I’m a transplanted Maritimer, originally from Moncton, who came to Acadia and, despite a couple efforts to move away over the last couple decades, I’ve been repeatedly drawn back to this place.

What: I work with clay and transform it into ceramic. I’ve been drawn to the tactile nature of this art form since I was a child and I love the potential for the functional component of the finished product (servingware, bakeware, tiles, etc).

Why: I think art is undervalued for what it offers societies and individuals. Creative thinking requires as much practice and commitment as almost any other pursuit, but I don’t think our culture values it that way. I like ceramic because it constantly challenges that part of my brain. The physical properties, technical problems, and aesthetic decisions never cease to force creative thinking and problem-solving.

The pace of life, cost of living, and supportive community in the Annapolis Valley makes it possible to pursue this art form here.

Carver Ryan Hupman: Who: I enjoy painting, carving, gardening and making music. I was born and raised in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, and came to Wolfville in 2000. I received an education degree from Acadia and I’m proud to call Wolfville my home.

What: My artistic medium these days is fresh green hardwood. Using razor-sharp axes and knives, I carve woodenware like bowls and spoons. Growing up I watched my father carve duck decoys and felt an immediate connection with this kind of work.

Where: I work from home. You can often find my carvings displayed at the Rolled Oat Cafe, and on occasion, I will have a table at the Wolfville Farmers Market. I try to keep an account of my recent work through Instagram @ryanhupmanart.

When: I first thought of myself as an artist when I was quite young. I’ve always enjoyed working away making things, whether it is painting, carving, or sculpture. I have no set schedule for making art and I find myself working at all hours of the day. Night time is always a bit sweeter though.

Why: Making art is energizing for me. I enjoy working with my hands, creating something that someone might cherish. Most things I make are like puzzles that take patience and faith. Living here in such a beautiful place, it only seems natural to represent and reflect that beauty and gratitude through art.

RECIPE: Strawberry Rhubarb Crunch Cheesecake Jenny Osburn | The Union Street Cafe Cookbook | www.jennyosburn.com Jenny Osburn ran a restaurant, wrote a couple cookbooks and thinks that everyone deserves good food. I know what you are thinking. Why on Earth would anyone mess with the sublime pleasure of the Valley’s first strawberries?

And I would agree. Also the ingredient list is mighty long and it involves quite a few steps.

Make this after you’ve already enjoyed your first strawberry shortcake, maybe even after your second. Make it after you’ve eaten a whole quart of berries for lunch by yourself.

But do make it, because it is truly a celebration of the season, one best shared with quite a few friends, and possibly a bottle of something equally sparkly and pink.

Strawberry Rhubarb Crunch Cheesecake Serves up to 12.

Crust: • 3/4 • 1/2 • 1/2 • 3/4 • 1/4 • 1/4 • 1/3

Bake at 350 for 10 minutes.

Pretty Pink Filling: • 4 C sliced rhubarb • 1 1/2 C sliced strawberries • 3/4 C sugar Bring to a boil in a wide pan and cook until juices have evaporated and mixture is the consistency of chunky jam.

Cheesecake Part: • 1 lb. cream cheese • 1 C sugar • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla • 3 eggs • 2 C sour cream • 1 Tbsp cornstarch

C flour C brown sugar C oats tsp cinnamon tsp baking soda tsp salt C butter

Using your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until well combined. Reserve 1 cup crumbs in a separate bowl. Press remaining into a 9 or 10 inch springform pan.

Combine in a food processor and blend until smooth. Pour over crust into pan. Place rhubarb filling by spoonfuls on top. Sprinkle reserved crumbs over. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour at 350F, until center barely jiggles when pan is gently shaken. Cool and then refrigerate overnight.

English and French. Landry, a bilingual actor from Dieppe, NB, interprets the role of Pierre Landry, who may well have been his ancestor.

Slipp has extended his ghost walk role, taking John Frederic Herbin’s words to the park that Herbin dreamed of making a reality for so long.

Organized by the Société Promotion GrandPré, which rejoiced in visitor numbers climbing last year, there are several programs featuring puppetry and storytelling with a modest charge. Both songs and stories are going to be shared at the park. One of the able musicians taking part is Wolfville’s Donovan Cassidy-Nolan, who has been playing the fiddle since age four. Elyse Delaney, a member of the World Youth Choir, takes on the singing.

Elise Choquet (who hails from Greenwood), Samuel Landry, Jesse Lapointe, Melanie LeBlanc, and well-known local actor Alan Slipp are all back performing this season. Moncton’s Anika Lirette is in charge of the creative team.

The producer of three documentary films on Grand-Pré, Lirette can be irreverent, downright funny, and moving when the story calls for it.

Another New Brunswicker back in the Valley, Claude DeGrâce, a former park superintendent, has invested considerable time and energy in getting Grand-Pré where it is today.

He feels passionate about continuing the work of recognition – much as Herbin did a century ago. With UNESCO World Heritage status in place, DeGrâce believes the site has huge potential for the kind of storytelling Canadians should hear.

UNPREDICTABLE DINING BY TANGLED GARDEN Scott Campbell

There is only one word to describe this dinner: magical.

From the moment we left the parking lot and walked into the fairyland that is Tangled Garden, we were spellbound. We were greeted by one of our hosts, Lisa Boehme, as soon as we walked through the gate. She gave us a quick tour of the retail space and our “dining room” and then sent us off to explore the expansive and mystical gardens on our own. Before entering the rest of the garden we stopped and chatted with Alexandra, the representative from Benjamin Bridge Winery who supplied all the wine for our dinner.

As we moved along, exploring the natural beauty around us, we again met Lisa— suddenly materializing out of a beech hedge—who presented us with delicious French 75 cocktails. After a few moments more of exploring and sipping our cocktails, a gong summoned us back to the dining area. We were met there by our other host, and Tangled Garden owner, Beverly McClare. Beverly instructed us to follow the fiddler (well-known local musician, Tony Napoli) through the garden. Just that experience alone—a trail of eager and curious diners unquestioningly following Tony to… what? We were about to find out. Beverly gave us a quick lesson on the versatility of lovage and then we were offered a delicious canapé of sausage, olive, and lovage. Delicious.

Then off we go, following Tony again, to another part of the garden – this time to gather around the goldfish pond. Once there, another host, Keely, presented us with another spectacular canapé, this time grilled shrimp presented in a tiny jar of herbed gin jelly with a sprig of bronze fennel as garnish. Amazing.

Then it was back to our wisteria-draped dining room to begin our dinner. The incredible and delicious menu was created by Mark Merrin, who came out and introduced each course to us as we went through the evening. This was my first time dining with Mark but I’m sure we’ll see more of this very talented individual in the future. We began the evening with portobello mushrooms filled with tomatoes, fresh garden herbs, and Gruyère cheese. The firm meat of the fresh mushrooms made for the perfect stage for the tomatoes and melted cheese. I was already looking forward to the rest of this dining experience. The Benjamin Bridge NV Brut was a spectacular opening act for the wine pairings. Where many wines will highlight a specific vintage or year, the non-vintage NV Brut works to create a representation of Benjamin Bridge’s own microclimate and terroir. The earthy minerality of the NV Brut was the ideal choice to present with the rich roasted mushrooms smothered in Gruyère.

Next up (or, Act 2, as it was presented to us on our menus), we were treated with heirloom peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and feta drizzled with Tangled Garden Blackberry Bliss Vinaigrette. This fresh and colourful dish was brimming with spring flavours that were pushed over the top by the spectacular

vinaigrette. I’ll definitely be visiting their retail shop soon to procure some to have at home.

The Benjamin Bridge Reisling was the pairing for this course and, as before, Alexandra was right on the mark. The dry style white wine stood perfectly beside the fresh vegetables and tangy vinaigrette.

Act 3 was Rosette di Pasta layered with four cheeses and prosciutto presented on slow-roasted tomato sauce. I’m not sure if it’s the slow roasting that gave the tomato the kind of flavour we experienced but it was incredible.

The perfectly cooked pasta with the rich cheese and prosciutto filling nestled in the flavourful tomato sauce was certainly a highlight of the dinner. The Benjamin Bridge pairing for this course was their version of our appellation blend, Tidal Bay. Visitors and local alike are generally thrilled with any of the local Tidal Bays but Benjamin Bridge’s offering was fantastic and especially perfect for the pasta.

The Finale of the evening was well worth the wait. Those of you who have read my articles before will know I have a sweet tooth. In my considerable dining experience I have tried a lot of cheesecake. A lot. The New York Style Cheesecake with fresh berries and Tangled Garden Raspberry Liqueur may have been the best I’ve ever tasted. I don’t make a statement like that lightly. The fresh berries and the silky cream cheese were a nice combination but if I had to guess what made this cheesecake stand out so far above the rest, I would speculate that Mr. Merrin utilized very good vanilla in his cheesecake mixture. Or maybe there was just a hint of lemon. That’s only a guess. Maybe the secret ingredient was the magical setting we were in. Benjamin Bridge was up to the pairing with the ever popular Nova 7. This refreshing sparkling wine was just sweet enough to easily make a perfect match for the delicious dessert.

And just when we thought there couldn’t be any more fantastic surprises, we were led to the Tangled Garden Tea Room where we were offered coffees, lattes, espressos, or herbal teas, along with a homemade tootsie roll. This little building in the middle of the gardens is as magical as its surroundings. Sipping my coffee from my antique tea cup, I couldn’t help but smile at the trailing vine that was reaching in through the open window and round the beams as if it wanted to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the little tea house too.

The Unpredictable Dining experience is just that, unpredictable, but I can easily predict you will never be disappointed. You can also enjoy the splendor of these Tangled Gardens any time they’re open and have a tea or coffee and a treat in the tranquil setting of the tea house. Without hesitation I can tell you that Tangled Gardens and Unpredictable Dining are two of the Valley’s treasures. Treat yourself and enjoy either or both of them soon. But don’t hesitate, the Unpredictable dinners have limited seating and they fill up quickly. Cheers.

The Whittle’s inaugural Retro Blockbusters Summer Film Series will bring back old memories while creating new ones for a fresh generation of cinema lovers, says manager Mary Harwell. The intent of the Retro Blockbusters Summer Film Series is to capture the fun and nostalgia of the many popular hit movies of the past. Films like: Big, The Sting, Alien, Chinatown, Goldfinger, ET: The Extraterrestrial, Jaws, and many others are scheduled, says Harwell. “The big screen really does add to the experience of viewing a great fun film.” The first film, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, coincides with Pride Week, but most of the films lined up are modern classics like Jaws.

The series – mostly nights with some matinees – will run between July 22 and August 19. The not-for-profit theatre co-op is going to keep the price of admission affordable at $5.

Since Valley Summer Theatre wasn’t able to bring any drama to Wolfville this summer, Harwell says, the Acadia Cinema Co-operative board wanted to avoid an empty stretch of time during the busy summer months. “We

MACKEREL SKY GAMES LAUNCHES FIRST BOARD GAME Genevieve Allen Hearn

When you were younger, did you think being a game designer sounded like the coolest job in the world? I sure did! It was one of those jobs that I knew people did – but it was somehow unattainable and not ‘real life’. There’s a group in the Annapolis Valley that is dispelling any assumptions about careers in the gaming industry. They are four professionals that found an intersection of skills that made Mackerel Sky Games a reality. The team recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for their first board game, Doxie Dash, and exceeded their funding goal. The dachshund hero card game received support from over 300 backers, and is now in the manufacturing stage.

The Grapevine spoke with Marcie Clowry, a co-founder and graphic designer for the board game publisher.

The Grapevine (GV): Tell me the origin story of Mackerel Sky Games.

Marcie Clowry (MC): Games are best played with friends. In our case, the team consists of best friends, and also two couples. Travis Wilkins and his wife Kendra Wilkins met at Acadia University, while Justin MacDonald and I met in grade 12 at Horton High School. Travis and Justin have been close since they were little kids, playing for hours on end. As adults, play still unifies us. We started making tabletop games together seven years ago as a means to unplug our kids from screens and connect with them in a more tactile manner. This hobby has since grown into a pursuit of creativity and engineering that we wish to share with a larger audience.

GV: What are some unique challenges in the board game industry?

MC: The contemporary board game industry is a niche that is steadily growing in popularity. With the advent of crowdfunding, game designers are able to push their projects into the market in unprecedented numbers. We fell in love with tabletop games because of the challenges we face while playing and designing them. The industry is like a game, and it’s one we’re excited to play. It’s highly competitive and difficult to get noticed. It offers us unique challenges and rewards with each new step we take. Every day is new and different from the one before.

GV: What are some exciting things about working in the board game industry?

MC: The community is incredibly inclusive, talented, and enthusiastic. From artists to designers, collaboration is something that is valued in the industry and pushes our ideas further. So we’re really excited to see what comes of some of the relationships that we are currently building. It is also limitless. You can allow your imagination to run wild during game development. You get to create whole new worlds and then invite people into them to play.

GV: What is it like working as a team? Are there things you need to consider to make the collaboration work?

MC: We are very fortunate to have a compatible team. We all offer different things to the process. Although there is some overlap, we can all recognize each other’s strengths and know when to push or when to back off one another. It’s easy in this process to get so dialed into the work that you cease to see the bigger picture. We all value when someone from the team questions our decisions and asks us to reflect on them. At the end of the day, the critique leads to a better product.

GV: Give us your best Doxie Dash pitch!

MC: Doxie Dash is the party game that keeps on giving. Easy to learn, but challenging to perfect, it can be enjoyed by all ages and all skill levels.

Gameplay is quick and simple. Draft cards, gamble, sabotage, and use your hero’s variable player powers to overcome your challengers.

MUSIQUE ROYALE PROUDLY ANNOUNCES 2018 SUMMER FESTIVAL SEASON Submitted

Musique Royale announces its summer festival season, bringing locals and visitors alike a grand set of performers. The tours will include a vibrant arrangement of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with Les Voix Humaines, operatic star Isabel Bayrakdarian, the recently discovered early music for cello of Italian composer Fiore, and Nova Scotia traditional music with Boxwood. The season will also showcase early music with young artists Aureas Voces, world music with Steve Normandin, and for the finale, La Nef will spearhead sailor shanties and sea songs! Musique Royale is Nova Scotia’s province-wide presenter of music, and since 1985 has celebrated early music and the vast heritage of the province by touring worldclass musicians to some of the province’s

most far off and precious venues. Take a look at the historic churches where these concerts will be presented, and perhaps step into the cozy setting of a salon-style house concert.

Visit Nova Scotia’s iconic venues, including Ottawa House in Parrsboro (a former summer home of Sir Charles Tupper, a father of confederation), Highland Village in Iona, and Sacre Coeur Church on Nova Scotia’s French Shore in Saulnierville.

Friday, September 28 boasts two main stage concerts this year. The Festival Theatre in Wolfville will feature the return of festival favourites The Bombadils, with the pride of PEI, Dennis Ellsworth; Newfoundland’s finest Ukrainian dance band, The Kubasonics; and Celtic family superstars, Leahy. The Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre in Windsor will host The Sadies (Canadian country luminaries), and Sarah Jane Scouten (Americana at its finest).

We are thrilled that Ryan Cook is also returning to Deep Roots on Saturday, September 29 at Festival Theatre, with a special appearance

by Terra Spencer and with guitar whiz Mike T. Kerr in tow. Vishtèn will grace the stage, reminding those of us lucky enough to have seen them close the historic Mi’kmaq/Acadian event last summer in Grand-Pré how great they truly are. The night will also highlight Tomato/Tomato from New Brunswick, and Canadian folk music legend, Valdy.

Darrin Harvey will host the closing concert on Sunday. He will reveal the annual Valley Arts Award recipient and introduce a ‘song in the round’ with Terra Spencer, Mike T. Kerr, and Winona Wilde. David Newland will present his The Northwest Passage in Story and Song, which features Inuit throat-singing duo Siqiniup Qilautu (Sunsdrum). We’ll close out the festival with local darlings The Gilberts, and feature a

CD release set with Kim Barlow’s latest recording project.

If you like dancing, you’re in luck. Deep Roots will present two late night dances at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market this year, starting after the main stage shows and only a short walk from the Festival Theatre. A barnburner on Friday, September 28 with The Kubasonics and Vishtèn will surely inspire us all to dance, and a full-on jamboree will happen on Saturday, September 29 with The Sadies and local phenom Zakary Miller (known for his raucous hootenannies at Union Street).

Come to the Festival Tent on Saturday morning with your kids for some crafts. Prepare for The Fresh Beats Parade (12pm) with hat, mask, and instrument making, drumming and dressing up with Wee Giant puppets, followed by a puppet performance of Red Riding Hood

by The Maritime Marionettes, and Fishin’ for Pickles, a kids’ music show with Jamie Junger!

A Festival Pass gets you into all the Festival Theatre main stage shows, afternoon collaborations, and access to the Festival Club as ‘home base’ for the weekend. Passes are available for three or four days (includes the Thursday night Kick-off Concert). The main stage shows usually sell out so be sure to get your tickets soon. ‘Early Bird’ passes are available until June 22.

MINDFULNESS HARP AND YOGA FESTIVAL Escape the stresses of everyday life by visiting the beach in Kingsport this summer during the second annual Mindfulness Harp and Yoga Festival. Founded by teacher and musician, Johanne McInnis, the goal of the festival is to provide an atmosphere of peace and calm conducive to considering mindful solutions to life’s challenges, enhancing people’s lives & sharing one story at a time.

After travelling through Canada and performing in various Mindfulness, Yoga Festivals and Spa Centers, McInnis heard so many great stories that deserve our attention and thought, she cannot keep to herself all the wonderful people she met along the way. The idea for the Harp and Yoga Festival in her hometown was born. It has been very well received by the Kingsport community.

The festival is focused around four main topics: education, the environment, nutrition, and health. Various activities will be offered every Wednesday and Saturday. There will be picnics on the Look Off mountain each Wednesday at lunchtime “Connecting Live with Our Community” to encourage community connection with discussions of health, local vibrancy, and economy. Everyone is welcome to bring a lunch and join in the conversation.

On Saturdays, there will be in-depth discussion panels. Andrea Spinney & John Otvos will give a circle talk on the importance of a herb based diet, and rising above through resilience (July 1). Dr Larry Hughes will speak about the electric car and the environment (July 21, 7pm), Shannon Read will give a practical workshop on Cycle Fitness at 50 (July 14, 7pm). Andréeanne Bédard (from EOS) will give two workshops (French & English, July

18 & 21) called: Let Food be Thy Medicine.

Heather Mayhew, marine biologist, will share on The state of our rivers and oceans. Johanne will be hosting a guided meditation designed for individuals going through a separation (including “empty nest”) and divorce (Finding the Hidden Gifts Behind Life’s Transitions).

This festival is for all lovers of nature and wellness (Parents, teachers, nurses, teenagers).

It also includes two concerts: Kirtan singing with Heidi, Andy & Johanne (July 7, 8pm), and contemplative Celtic Harp concert by the sea (July 28, 8:30pm).

Sunset and Sunrise yoga sessions will be offered by many yoga teachers coming from the Valley, New Brunswick and Québec. The natural sounds of the water, blending with calming harp music and the beautiful view provides the perfect background for the classes. The guest yoga teachers are Angie Oriana, Karen Roberts, Jennifer Boutillier, Tim Shultz, Mia Lockhart, Dan Martell, Jacinthe Desrosiers, and Johanne McInnis. Whose Maud? presents the work of rug-hooker Laura Kenney and painter Steven Rhude. The exhibition takes “Whose Maud?” as its central question, in that there are many interpretations of Maud as an artist, individual, and folk art icon. Today, Maud’s life and legacy are shared through mediums including literature, art, and film. The artist and her work have come to symbolize a bucolic rural landscape, but this stands in stark contrast to the harsh realities of her life. WHAT’S GROWING AT THE HARRIET IRVING BOTANICAL GARDENS

Melanie Priesnitz, Conservation Horticulturist When you think of what defines Canada, one of the primary things that comes to mind is this country’s natural environment and its wild and rugged wide-open spaces. You need look no further than our dollars, coins, and postage stamps to see how proud Canadians are of the flora and fauna that we share this great country with. Every Canadian flag that flies is a reminder of how much as a country we identify with the trees that grow here.

So many of the truly iconic Canadian experiences involve connecting with the great outdoors. From climbing the Rocky Mountains, sitting at the cottage listening to loon calls, eating maple syrup, skating on a frozen pond, watching the glow of northern lights, to lying on a deserted beach listening to waves crashing in. All of these things are important parts of the cultural heritage of Canada.

Canadians pride ourselves on our rich and beautiful natural heritage; it defines us, yet studies show that we are rapidly losing touch with the natural world. With current technological and behavioural trends as they are, plant and nature blindness is occurring. As Canadians lose touch with nature, the danger is very real that historical connections to plants and animals will be lost, forever changing our cultural identity and our environment.

One of the main missions of the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens is to remind people of the amazing beauty and diversity that exists in our own backyard. Our collections showcase plants native to the Acadian Forest Region. Many cultivated home and public gardens shine with the bright colours of non-native (introduced) plants. Our garden shines with the natural beauty that exists in our forests and natural ecosystems. Our hope is that by planting everyday species in a formal setting, visitors will gain a greater appreciation for plants in the wild. There’s a much greater chance that humans will work towards the conservation of species if they have a personal connection with them.

A great way to connect with nature while also using current technology is through an online app that you can download on your cellphone called iNaturalist. Visit the iNaturalist website and browse through the over 400,000 observations that citizen scientists across Canada have made and see for yourself just how rich and diverse the flora and fauna in our country truly is (inaturalist.org).

ROTARY CLUB $110,000 GIFT WILL SUPPORT FUTURE ACADIA STUDENTS Submitted

Future Acadia students will be the “winners” of Toonie Toss fundraising proceeds thanks to the Rotary Club of Wolfville-Mud Creek, which created a new financial award to help local high school graduates attend Acadia University.

The Rotary Club donated $110,000 to fund the Mud Creek Rotary Acadia Entrance Awards. Each year in perpetuity, a $1,000 bursary toward Acadia tuition will be awarded to a graduating student from each of the following Valley schools: Central Kings Rural High School, Horton High School, Northeast Kings Education Centre, and West Kings District High School.

“By creating bursaries at Acadia for local students, now and into the future, we are re-investing in our community to make an enduring difference – in fact, we feel a duty to do so,” explains Tom Herman, president of the Rotary Club of Wolfville-Mud Creek.

The endowed award will bolster Acadia’s ability to support students financially. Each year, the university provides more than $4.8 million in scholarships, bursaries, and awards to its undergraduate students.

The Rotary Club was able to fund the Mud Creek Rotary Acadia Entrance Awards by using proceeds from its signature fundraiser, the Toonie Toss, which is a weekly 50/50 draw. Herman says that as much as Toonie Toss players play to win, they also participate in helping their community.

“In that light, we see ourselves as stewards of precious resources that ultimately derive from the community,” he says. With players from across Kings County, the Rotary Club created awards for students from each of its high schools.

“It is gratifying to have members of our community supporting local students as they pursue their higher education aspirations,” says Nancy Handrigan, executive director of philanthropy at Acadia University. “We are honoured and thankful for this gift because we know it will help our students achieve their educational goals.”

The recipients of the new awards will be announced at each of the high school graduation ceremonies this June.

THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER: YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY! Angela Reynolds

The Valley will be bustling with activity this summer and as usual, Valley libraries will be bustling too.

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library once again will be featuring a performer tour.

We will be hosting Mi’kmaw dancer Trevor Gould, and Rhys Bevan-John will bring us his one-man theatre show using mime, puppets, masks, and “good ole tom-foolery.” Symphony Nova Scotia will offer a family version of their Munchkins program, featuring two musicians.

Well-known storyteller Shauntay Grant will be sharing stories for the whole family, and author- illustrator Emma FitzGerald will be holding two drawing workshops for kids aged 10 to 16.

If that’s not enough, there will be loads of tech labs featuring Ozobots, Snap Circuits, Cubelets, and more! You can get into Mad Science, attend 3D printer demonstrations, art workshops, storytimes, and the always-popular Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo will be back.

Keeping with the critters theme, AVRL is again partnering with Oaklawn Farm Zoo to offer two Zoo Days, when kids up to age 18 can get in free when they show their library card. Plus, the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is on until August 18. You could win passes to Upper Clements Parks, t-shirts, and much more.

Thanks to a grant from the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, Community Sport & Recreation Division, you can also borrow bicyces in Berwick or Wolfville. Bikes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are due back the same day, no later than 30 minutes before the library closes.

All of this, and so much more, make your library a go-to destination for summer events.
