Alumnae
Dear Alumnae,
Summer 2025
At The Ursuline School, tradition is the thread that binds us—and sisterhood is the fabric we’ve woven together across generations. Whether you graduated five years ago or fifty, you are part of a living legacy of women who share more than a school—you share values, memories, and a deep-rooted bond that endures. This tradition of connection, grounded in faith and service, continues to shape our community in profound ways.
In this issue of Serviam, we celebrate the life and legacy of Sr. Regina Kehoe H’87, OSU., a towering presence and beloved member of the school community. Just as Angela “tended the vine,” Sr. Regina understood that each young woman is unique and needs to be nurtured to fulfill her potential. In the pages that follow, you’ll discover stories of academic excellence, artistic expression, athletic achievement, and service to others. These stories are proof that the Ursuline tradition of empowering young women to lead with faith, courage, and compassion is alive and thriving.
It is in that same spirit of leadership and legacy that we welcome Robyn Summa ’93 as our Interim Principal, following Theresa Napoli’s departure. A proud alumna, many of you may remember her as a passionate AP Environmental Science teacher and as our Assistant Principal of Curriculum & Instruction. Robyn brings a deep understanding of Ursuline’s mission and a heartfelt commitment to our students. I am confident she will guide us with clarity, compassion, and strength during this time of transition, as we conduct a national search for the next Principal of The Ursuline School.
Time and again, I am inspired by our global network of Koala sisters who live out Serviam—mentoring students, returning to campus as panelists and speakers, supporting the school through annual giving. That simple act of service —of time, talent, or treasure—is what sustains the programs that make Ursuline so distinct.
Please know how deeply grateful we are for your continued engagement. Whether through reunions, social gatherings, annual gifts, or acts of mentorship and prayer, you are strengthening this community every day.
With heartfelt thanks,
Dr. Colleen Melnyk P’18

We celebrate the life and legacy of Sr. Regina Kehoe H’87, OSU, our former principal, and an exceptional woman of faith. Sr. Regina passed on February 24, 2024. Her legacy continues to shine through the lives she influenced—whether through her leadership, her encouragement of students and faculty, or her heartfelt connections with alumnae. We are grateful for Sr. Regina’s enduring impact on our community.
Regina Kehoe was born in the Bronx, NY on January 30, 1929. After graduating from the Academy of Mount St. Ursula, she earned her undergraduate degree in biology at the College of New Rochelle and a Master’s in Education Administration from Villanova University. She professed her vows in 1951.
Sr. Regina was a beloved member of The Ursuline School community. She was named our Principal in 1962 as a young, energetic nun who took the
students by surprise and developed an incredible connection with them. She served as our Principal from 1962 - 64 and from 1966 - 67. It was a decade that some alumnae recall as chaotic but “one woman stood tall,” literally and figuratively. In the words of a ’64 alumna, “She was progressive and we took our cue from her!” At that time, she was known as Mother Thomas Regina or, more affectionately, as TR.
In 1967, Sr. Regina left The Ursuline School to assume various leadership positions within the Ursuline order, but she never relinquished her close ties to our school. In 1987, The Ursuline School named Sr. Regina an honorary alumna, one of only five persons to be so distinguished in the history of our school.
In 1997, Sr. Regina returned to Ursuline as a member of the Counseling department, where she worked with the 6th graders as they transitioned into Ursuline. She also
became the moderator to the Mothers’ Auxiliary and the Director of Alumnae Relations. In each role she was wise, gracious, caring, and completely devoted to Ursuline. She touched the lives of countless faculty and staff, students and, of course, alumnae. In total, Sr. Regina served at The Ursuline School for 24 years, retiring in spring 2016.
In 2014, the Class of 1964 launched the TR Scholarship in honor of Sr. Regina and her lifelong commitment to the education of Ursuline students. The Mothers’ Auxiliary and alumnae from other years have also been inspired to contribute to this initiative, in particular the Class of 1968, so that, in the words
of Nancy Waters ’65, “She will be a part of Ursuline forever through the scholarship established in one of her many names.”
Sr. Regina also served on the Boards of the College of New Rochelle, Mount St. Ursula, and Fordham Prep. She was Provincial of the Eastern Province from 1973 - 1979, and she worked in the Office of Evangelization in the Archdiocese of New York from 1979 - 1982.
Sr. Regina has been an important influence on generations of Ursuline women and she is treasured by all members of the school community.
Sr. Regina will forever remain in our hearts.

Adria Armbrister,
PhD ‘94
Program Officer, Inter-American Foundation
We started our 2024 Women’s History Month series with Dr. Adria Armbrister ’94. Now an international expert in economic development, global health, and ethnic equality, Adria says, “Ursuline was the place where I discovered that an international development career even existed.” She cites her involvement in Ursuline clubs and language courses as her first steps toward becoming multi-lingual, a skill that has allowed her to live and work in various countries.
Adria’s advice to young women in early stages of their careers: “You may or may not know the name of the job or career you want to pursue from very early on and that’s okay. Just pay attention to what you are drawn to and talk to people about their careers.”
Adria was our Scholar-in-Residence in the academic year 2020-21.

Susan Boccardi ‘82 Managing Director, General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, Clarion Partners
Sue fondly remembers working closely with her Ursuline classmates, and how these experiences guided her to a collaborative career as a corporate attorney.
As CCO, Sue oversees her firm’s legal function and provides legal advice and perspective on regulatory, compliance, strategic and tactical issues. She believes, “staying calm and focused under pressure, and having a positive outlook” has served her well in her career.

Laura is an engineer who is passionate about sustainability and determined to provide a better future for the next generation. With a focus on real estate and decarbonization, Laura helps companies become more sustainable by developing and implementing strategies to reduce emissions and other environmental impacts. Laura credits her love of science and math to the learning environment at Ursuline: “I found teachers, courses, and like-minded students who were also passionate about figuring out how things work and solving puzzles. The classes I took at Ursuline helped convince me that I should go into engineering.”
Former Provincial, Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union, Eastern Province
We’re happy to feature Sr. Jane Finnerty, a graduate of Academy of Mount St. Ursula, whose vocation has been lived out at the school, parish, archdiocesan, and provincial leadership levels.
Armed with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biology as well as a second Master’s in Religious Education, Sr. Jane taught biology and religion at The Ursuline School 1970 - 74. She also was a member of our Board of Trustees. She then worked in parish ministry before taking on several responsibilities at the NY Archdiocese, including Mission Education Coordinator for Propagation of the Faith & Associate Director for Catechists Formation for the Catechetical Office.
Jean M. McLoughlin ‘84 Partner, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLC
Sr. Jane’s numerous roles in the Order have included serving in Formation work in the Province and as director of the International Renewal Program (Tertianship) in Rome. In 2014, Sr. Jane was elected Provincial of the Eastern Province. In this leadership role, Sr. Jane has said she was “struck by the vibrant spirit of St. Angela . . . her breadth of vision, optimism and flexibility make her an ideal guide for me.”
Sr. Jane’s gracious spirit and strong commitment to St. Angela’s charism permeate every aspect of her work. Sr. Jane, in her various leadership roles, has had the opportunity to travel to Ursuline provinces around the world. One of her most memorable was a visit to Kenya during which she
As the first woman partner in her group at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLC, Jean’s work focuses on executive compensation. She is aware how Serviam can influence this work as there are all sorts of positive ways in which companies can look out for employees, and she has found that infusing your humanity into a situation is key to being successful in this area.
She credits her time at Ursuline for teaching her “the importance of relationships, friendship, mentorship and service.” Jean advises her mentees at work that “one way to be successful

Currently she is involved in committees in the Province and volunteers at St. John the Baptist Parish in Yonkers. She undertakes these ministries with enthusiasm and appreciation for that aspect of the Ursuline mission which aims to build peace and reconciliation among peoples in a multicultural society.
in life is to figure out how to be useful and leave a situation better because you participated. However, even though you should always want to be useful, you don’t always have to be the one to make everyone feel good!”
As a grateful member of the Young Survival Coalition - an organization for young women diagnosed with breast cancer - she received important assistance when she needed it and made amazing friends who showed up for her time and again. Now Jean is a proud supporter of this Coalition and continues to show up for others in various ways, in the belief that none of us can succeed on our own.
Liz Healy ‘94 P’29
Liz encourages all young women to “advocate for yourself and go after what you want.” When she joined Deloitte after graduating from Cornell, she took a risk and made it known she sought global client experience and a rapid promotion path; within 2 years she was living in London/Asia and then was the youngest person promoted to Senior Manager.
Liz credits the Ursuline hands-on education for inspiring her to go into business. Specifically, she recalls building a portfolio of investments and visiting the stock exchange with Mrs. Joan Caffrey’s class. Liz also believes she learned more from watching Sr. JB in action than most
of the CEOs she has ever worked with. The lessons she absorbed from Ursuline Coaches Wooters and Mitchell are that “hard work pays off, don’t take nonsense from anyone, and trust your teammates.” In gratitude to Ursuline, Liz enthusiastically gives back and presently serves on our Board.
Liz is currently battling stage 4 colorectal cancer. Her family is fully committed to advocating and raising awareness of this disease. Liz recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to call on members of Congress to increase federal funding for research and raising awareness and access to screening for colorectal cancer.

In her specialty of Preventive Medicine, Public Health and Occupational Medicine, Dr. Butler leads a team of medical professionals providing health care and health and safety education to workers for all aspects of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Her clinic’s current project involves developing and implementing comprehensive cancer screening for volunteer firefighters in New York State using a newly acquired medical mobile unit.
Dr. Butler specifies fearless perseverance as the leadership quality that has served her best. Her advice to young women is: “Never take no
as the final answer. Be the master of your own destiny. Realize that every decision has a consequence; life is all about balancing those consequences and knowing that the choice is worth the consequence before proceeding.”
Serviam has certainly played an important role throughout her life. She says, “Early on I learned the importance of leading a life of service and this choice has impacted every part of my personal and professional life. I am proud of how many people I have been able to help in my roles as physician, mother, wife, sister, artisan and friend.”

Her collaborative nature is a leadership quality that has served her well. Says Maria, “Collaborating with my peers and coworkers helps me learn more in areas where my colleagues are more experienced and overall helps each project be more efficient by using every person’s strengths.”
Through pro bono work representing those who can’t afford representation, Maria continues to live the Ursuline motto of Serviam.
Annemarie says that being surrounded by successful women in leadership positions during her years at Ursuline, “ingrained my conviction that it is normal, and expected, for women to lead. As a result, throughout my life and career I have always viewed any leadership goal I sought not only as possible, but probable.”
Trepp Inc. is a leading provider of data, insights, and technology solutions to the banking, structured finance, and commercial real estate markets. died as a result of the attacks in 2001. Helen was the only Ursuline alumna who was among those lost on that tragic day.
In 2019, as part of the World Trade Center Oak Project, our school received an oak sapling, which was grown from an acorn collected from oak trees surrounding the September 11 Memorial. The sapling thrived and outgrew its original container. In September 2024, we planted the young oak tree in a large open space in front of the Innovation Hub.
Helen was a computer specialist working for Cantor Fitzgerald –eSpeed in 1 World Trade Center. She was one of the original Ursuline “Women of Tech” - known for her coding skills when programming

Our 127th Commencement on May 30, 2024 celebrated the strength, wisdom, kindness, and courage of the Class of 2024, who began high school at the height of the pandemic. As Valedictorian Alexia Tzaneteas proclaimed, “Because of the inauspicious way our high school experience began, many people justifiably thought we were a lost cause. But I happen to disagree . . . we’ve learned both the things we wanted to hear, and the things we needed to hear over these past four years. We’ve simultaneously had our hopes both crushed and restored, have had our questions both answered and returned to us with more layers of complication. Clearly, the pandemic did not hinder our education in the slightest, and if anything, what we all went through makes the achievements we’re celebrating today even more grand.”
Salutatorian Ava Snyder encouraged her classmates with these words: “Wear your ring
with pride. Stay in touch with your classmates, from your best friends to the people you only bonded with during the long, long wait in the lunch line. The connections built here extend far beyond these doors . . . Serviam, the spirit of service through faith, is a hallmark of Ursuline and forms the foundation of all the relationships we’ve built . . . It is a privilege to serve others, and I encourage you all to continue, not only because it is right, but because it is how we show what the Ursuline Sisterhood truly means to each of us . . . Take all that Ursuline has given you and run with it to courageously change what you can wherever the world calls you. Congratulations, Class of 2024. The world awaits our contributions, and I have no doubt that we will rise to the occasion!”
Dr. Melnyk noted that this class of only 127 seniors was accepted into 205 colleges and universities, collectively earning $21 million in college scholarships and awards. She said, “Your dedication and perseverance have prepared you for what lies ahead. I believe in you and have no doubt that you will excel in reaching your potential.”

After 45 years of exceptional service to Ursuline as teacher, chaplain, and trustee, Msgr. Dennis Keane formally retired from his ministry at our school. On September 26, 2024, he celebrated his final Mass with our community. It was, as Msgr. Keane noted, “a special Mass for me and for you. The start of the school year is a time of hope, of dreams, of what can be.”
Msgr. Keane was touched that honored guests included members of the Keane family and retired Ursuline colleagues. Leading the Prayers of the Faithful were longtime friends and collaborators: Sr. Joanne Safian, RSHM, Sr. Pat Schifini, OSU, Sr. Pat Russell, OSU, and

Msgr. Keane delivered the homily in his open-hearted and earnest manner. It was a moment of gratitude and reflection. He shared that it was a privilege working alongside the Ursuline Administration and the Ursuline Sisters. He recalled significant events, such as his first graduation liturgy in 1978. He shared how his colleague, Mrs. Ruth Kon, had urged him to visit Israel, a trip that “made a tremendous difference in my life, as the Scriptures came alive!”
The day’s Gospel from Luke recounted the young Jesus in the temple, speaking to the scribes while his parents
searched for him. Monsignor noted that Jesus “grew in wisdom, age and grace” and encouraged students to likewise grow in knowledge and continue the work of Jesus on earth; to grow in maturity, and the “realization of who you are, a person that God loves and gives a vocation to.” He concluded with the words: “Know that God has made a dwelling place for you! May 2024-25 be a year of wisdom, age and grace.”
Msgr. Keane has guided generations of Ursuline students in faith and offered our community pastoral care through every season of life, in times of joy as well as hardship. As trustee from 2017 to 2023, he provided wise counsel. His ministry has extended beyond campus, to Ursuline families and others, through decades of parish service, and continues now at Holy Family Church in New Rochelle, NY. As a spiritual leader, he is calm yet passionate.
At the end of Mass, Dr. Melnyk expressed our community’s deep appreciation and presented Msgr. Keane with a framed letter from Timothy Cardinal Dolan. The Cardinal wrote, in part, “I am sure no assignment has been more fulfilling than your years as chaplain, helping the young women of The Ursuline School grow closer to Jesus and His Church as they become wise, active, globally-minded leaders.”
Dr. Melnyk closed with these heartfelt words, “Monsignor, your legacy is not found in buildings or ceremonies, but in the lives you’ve touched and the faith you’ve inspired. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your extraordinary service and for being the spiritual anchor of this community. You will be deeply missed, but your influence will remain with us always. With love and endless gratitude, we wish you every blessing in the years to come.”
With gratitude and deep affection, we acknowledge the retirement of Joan Brescia P’00 ’01 in summer 2024. She began her Ursuline career 49 years earlier, teaching French. A true Renaissance educator, she ultimately taught in several departments: World Languages —French, Spanish, and Italian in both middle school and high school—Social Studies, and most recently in Reading & Language Development. Wherever there was a need, Joan stepped in with grace, enthusiasm, and her signature sparkle. She brought the same energy to extracurriculars, moderating the French Club and keeping the beat as the Faculty Band’s drummer.
At Sr. JB’s request, Joan started a competitive cheerleading program at Ursuline. She was the first coach of what became a nationally recognized championship team and perennial powerhouse. Not only did the cheerleaders compete and win

titles, with Joan’s guidance they lived out Serviam in their special way; for more than 20 years, the Varsity Cheerleaders performed a BEAT CANCER cheer at the opening ceremonies of the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Manhattanville University. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Squads performed and walked at Paws for the Cause at Iona Prep. Many cheerleaders were members of Ursuline’s Breast Cancer Awareness Club which raised thousands of dollars for our Think Pink Scholarship Fund and The American Cancer Society.
In many ways, Joan embodied Serviam. She served joyfully and with an unwavering belief in the goodness and potential of others. She showed patience, kindness and belief in her students. Her colleagues valued her organization skills, mentorship, and constant positivity. As we say “À bientôt,” we wish Joan good health and many blessings in her retirement years.

After 15 years of devoted service, we bid a fond farewell to Ed Moore P’99, our dedicated Director of Facilities who retired in April 2024. Though Ed never sought the spotlight, his impact was unmistakable as he diligently cared for the maintenance, safety and cleanliness of the campus. He had a remarkable ability to manage projects with quiet conviction, displaying calm amid any storm.
Ed brought a wealth of knowledge to his work — not just as a facilities professional, but as a mechanic and a craftsman. He loves machines of all kinds: cars, motorcycles, boats — and that same passion showed in the way he cared for our campus. His team found Ed easy to work with, always respectful and kind. They understood that he often returned to school on his own time to ensure a job was
done just right, because he felt the school and its people were worthy of his very best effort. May Ed enjoy many happy and fulfilling years in retirement.

The 8th grade three-day trip to Boston with our Social Studies teachers included historical sites such as the Freedom Trail and modern adventures at the Museum of Science and Fenway Park.
Juniors explored Venice, Florence, and Rome, with a meaningful stop in Brescia, where Saint Angela lived and founded her “Company of Women.” A highlight was celebrating Easter Mass at the Duomo in Florence.
In honor of Women’s History Month, March 2024, we welcomed the renowned filmmaker, TV presenter, author, and National Geographic Explorer, Lucy Cooke, for an enlightening and inspiring visit. She shared a fascinating perspective on the role of females in the natural world, debunking misconceptions about male dominance and highlighting the dynamic and essential nature of females across species. Her own journey, from a childhood fascination with amphibians to a successful career in zoology, underscored the importance of pursuing your passions.
Our celebration of Black History Month, February 2024, featured a guest speaker: the Honorable Yadira Ramos-Herbert P ’28, newly elected mayor of New Rochelle and Ursuline parent. She provided an inside look at life in public office and insights into representative government with a focus on the impactful role of women and persons of color. The Black Essence Club and the Social Studies Department collaborated in the planning of this celebration which began with an informative lesson about the origins of Black History Month, followed by a moving dance performance by Corinne Ross ’25.
At the first all-school assembly in September of the 2024-25 academic year, students were inspired by the words of Bruce Beck, Westchester’s multi-award-winning Lead Anchor for NBC 4 New York. As he described his road to sportscasting success, he emphasized the essential life skills needed to succeed in any profession, such as active listening and relationship-building, and he encouraged students to view failure as a stepping stone to success: “Remember, to get into the Baseball Hall of Fame you have to bat 300, which means you can fail seven out of ten times and still be successful.”
On March 7, 2024, we welcomed Dennis Liu, Ph.D., Vice President of Education at the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, as the keynote speaker for our 2024 Global Symposium on Global Biodiversity. Dr. Liu described the intricate web of relationships that bind all life forms. Drawing from “Laudato Si,” the papal encyclical on the environment, Dr. Liu reminded us of our collective responsibility to care for our common home, Planet Earth. His hopeful message highlighted nature’s resilience and the potential for restoration when concerned people act.

Today, The Ursuline School proudly offers young women an exceptional education spanning middle and high school. However, our school’s current configuration of grades 6 through 12 and the exclusive focus on girls have not always defined our identity.
This is the story of alumna Joanmarie Tully O’Connor and her husband, Tom O’Connor, who can both claim Ursuline as their alma mater.
Joanmarie, her four sisters, their mother and their aunt all graduated from Ursuline. The Tullys are well-known as a family deeply rooted in sports and philanthropy. Their name graces The Tully Family Gymnasium - Auditorium, a testament to their enduring generosity. They also established the Kathryn Merkert Tully ‘45 Memorial Scholarship Award, which is presented annually to a junior in recognition of leadership and personal commitment.
While the Tully contributions and commitment to Ursuline are widely recognized, the unique fact that Joanmarie and Tom share a connection as alumni of the same institution may come as a delightful surprise to many!
By Joanmarie Tully O’Connor ‘74
Years ago, Ursuline had a coed nursery school, and my husband, Tom O’Connor graduated from it in 1954. I entered Ursuline in 1970 as a freshman. While there, the grammar school was being phased out. I continued my education at Marymount in Virginia, where I met Tom, a graduate of Georgetown, and we discovered our shared Ursuline connection.
We’ve been married now for almost 46 years, have two sons, and five grandchildren. Our youngest grandchild, and only girl, may continue the Tully tradition of attending Ursuline, becoming the ninth Tully to do so, in addition to another nine when we count aunts and cousins.
Today, Tom and I keep in close contact with the Ursuline community, supporting it in any way that we can.

What do Beyonce, ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air,’ and ‘I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings’ have in common? They are some of the #1 answers to Family Feud brought to you by Ursuline’s Black Essence Club, the longest-running club at school. On December 3, 2024, the familiar game pitted club members against their playful counterparts from Iona Prep’s African-American Society during the group’s annual potluck gathering.
To casual passersby, it was a festive and well-attended afterschool event, but a closer look reveals the subtle magic of club life at its best at Ursuline.
The Black Essence Club, founded in 1973 by Ms. Donna M. Edwards ’75, Dr. Sheila Butler ’76 and
Ms. Pam Robertson ’73 and some of their friends, continues to positively impact students, fostering a sense of community while celebrating the richness of Black and African-American culture. Over 50 years strong, the club’s objective is its cornerstone: to promote a positive and productive representation of Black and African-American culture through various activities that build community and empower students.
The Honorable Donna M. Edwards, a title earned during her impressive law career as a federal administrative judge, quietly slipped in after the event got underway.
After retiring, Edwards returned home to New Rochelle and Ursuline in her new role as student mentor and board trustee. “This club allows students to feel heard and supported within the school community,” she said with her eyes on a group of students helping themselves to the buffet.
Edwards has been actively stewarding the club since returning to her alma mater. She was joined by Butler and Robertson in March 2023 at the Black Essence Club meeting at which the alumnae spoke of the formation and history of the club, the value of mentorship and the importance of sisterhood.
Edwards is delighted “beyond all measure” that the club she began with friends more than 50 years ago is still going strong.
Current faculty co-moderators, Mrs. Theresa Ufomaduh and Mrs. Doretha Buster, are grateful for the support.
Dr. Colleen Melnyk, president, points to the Black Essence Club as an example of all that Ursuline clubs can
“This club has a long history of giving back to the community through volunteer work. It continues to build community and bring out the best in our students.”
Dr. Colleen Melnyk, president
accomplish. “It’s a moment in time,” she explains. “This club has a long history of giving back to the community through volunteer work. It continues to build community and bring out the best in our students.”
Throughout the school year, the club provides a platform for discussing experiences that impact Black and AfricanAmerican students. Students deepen their understanding of different perspectives, fostering empathy and mutual respect, and look outward for opportunities to serve the broader community.
Melnyk sums it up: “For more than 50 years, the Black Essence Club has empowered students to be agents of change. Through its commitment to creating a sense of belonging, the club plays a crucial role in shaping a supportive and inclusive school community for all.”

At night you can find her in the mechanic tool lab learning to weld with other members of the Welding Club. When she is not actively engaged in clubs. you can find Jennipher in the school Library or the S.H.E.D. (Student Hall for Exploration and Development).
The holiday spirit was electrifying as more than 100 alumnae from various decades gathered at Ursuline on November 21, 2024 for the annual Alumnae Holiday Kickoff Party, hosted by the Advancement Team.
A highlight of the evening was the introduction of Guest Bartenders who served up drinks and plenty of laughs. Their presence added a nostalgic and personal touch that everyone loved! We thank our Guest Bartenders: Bill Childs, Eileen Davidson, Max Franck, Dan O’Hare, Chris Pope, Sr. Pat Schifini, Sr. Maureen Welch and Beth Wooters.
For the first time, the holiday party was held in the beautiful Kulsar &
McCarthy Lobby and the modern HighTech Media Conference Center, giving alumnae the chance to experience Ursuline’s stunning new spaces as they mingled with classmates, former teammates, teachers, and good friends.
In a quieter corner of the Maalouf Family Collaborative Learning Space, alumnae were treated to a demonstration of the school’s Bloomberg terminals. Inspired by these
advanced technologies now available to Ursuline students, several alumnae volunteered to become mentors, ready to support the next generation.
Finally, every alumna received a fun keepsake—an exclusive Alumna T-shirt to remember this festive night!
The ever gracious Helen Mitchell Waters ’58 P’89 hosted a lovely tea on the afternoon of May 2, 2024 for classmates and friends Judy Magnus Nemec ‘58, Sherrie Nolan Simerman ‘58 and Valerie O’Keeffe GP ’21. They were joined by Dr. Colleen Melnyk P’18 and members of the Advancement Team: Cathy Fay McCarthy ‘84 P’14, Maureen Corbett P’13 ’16, and Niamh Fitzpatrick ‘16. The group enjoyed conversations with current students Isabella Vembenil ’25, Sylvia Cuono ’25 and Isabella Wuestenhoefer ’25, who shared their experiences and led the alumnae on a tour of the school. It was a memorable mini-reunion!
“Rejoice
On Saturday, June 1, 2024, the Advancement team welcomed a wonderful crowd of more than 450 alumnae to Ursuline for Reunion 2024. They were joined by several Ursuline Sisters and past faculty. Alumnae from the tri-state area were joined by alumnae from around the country - Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Texas, Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois, Washington and California, Rhode Island and New Hampshire - as well as London, England.
The Reunion liturgy was followed by the traditional presentation of two awards. The St. Angela Award and the St. Ursula Award. Dr. Melnyk also presented a new award. The Cor Ursulinae Award for Excellence and Achievement to Catherine Fay McCarthy ‘84 P’14, our Director of Philanthropy.
Besides connecting during the cocktail hour and dinner, and taking class photos on the Ring Day steps, alumnae at Reunion demonstrated their financial support for Ursuline. They contributed over $16,000 to the Alumnae Association Scholarship and nearly $54,000 for the TR Scholarship. Paying it forward. Thank you!
The Saint Angela Award is presented to alumnae for their exceptional loyalty and devotion to the school and for furthering the realization of the values and teachings of Serviam, the foundation of an Ursuline education.
Florie is the embodiment of lifelong learning and service in action. She credits her Ursuline education for preparing her to take on various challenges as she developed a successful career as a healthcare compliance, finance and audit professional. This included working part time while her children were young, going to school at night for 4 years to receive her MBA in Accounting, and earning a dozen professional certificates.
At every stage of her life, Florie lived the Serviam motto. She has been a Girl Scout leader, active in her church and her children’s schools, volunteered with the League of Women Voters, led community projects, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served on nonprofit boards. We are extremely pleased to present the St. Angela Award to Florie Munroe.
Classmates are unanimous in describing Deb as a kind, thoughtful and generous person with a tremendous sense of fun. They refer to Deb as “the universal donor” because she’s able to relate to anybody and everybody and goes out of her way to help people. Classmates especially appreciate her consistent efforts to sustain their alumnae connections. Most notably, in 2020, Debbie pierced the isolation of the pandemic by connecting classmates virtually as they celebrated birthdays.
She is a lifelong learner who is currently studying Italian, and a woman of faith. Deb lives the motto of Serviam. Most recently, she volunteered during our 125th Anniversary celebrations and currently serves as a member of our Board of Trustees and our Advancement Committee. We proudly bestow the St. Angela Award on Deborah Costello.
Susan personifies the spirit of the St Angela Award in numerous ways. She not only shows up as an alumna at Ursuline events, she donates generously, and offers her service. Last fall, she was one of the organizers of our annual Golf Outing.
Susan’s steadfast commitment to Ursuline is grounded in her belief in the transformative power of a Catholic school education. Her own years as an Ursuline student prepared her for achievements in engineering and industrial design. Now she works to ensure that future generations of young women have access to the same exceptional education and opportunities. We are very pleased to honor Susan McGoey with the St. Angela Award.
Educated by the Ursulines from elementary school through college, Kate was imbued with commitment to education, the Catholic faith, the development of the whole person, and social justice. She carried these values forward in a lifetime spent in service to higher education in the Catholic tradition.
Kate is presently the Vice President of Student Life at Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa. In addition to her

The success of a career is sometimes measured by the sustained effort to find the right fit and the perseverance to achieve one’s goals. After graduating from Ursuline, Antonia pursued a business major for three years. However, she felt a persistent desire to engage in a career more directly focused on helping people and serving her community, one that involved daily interactions with clients. Recognizing this passion, Antonia decided to change her major to biology and start her academic journey anew with the aim of becoming a pharmacist, a rigorous 6-year program. With the support of family and friends, and after years of dedication and sacrifice, Antonia earned her PhD.
Today, she is a pharmacist specializing in dermatology. Antonia credits her Ursuline education with teaching her independence, courage, and the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind to. Antonia’s career exemplifies the values of dedication, compassion, and perseverance. We are very pleased to present the St. Ursula Award to Antonia Sontag.

Those who have spent any time around Ursuline over the past two decades have felt the impact of Cathy Fay McCarthy ’84 P’14.
Whether she was spearheading a capital campaign, expanding scholarship opportunities, highlighting alumnae during Women’s History Month, or sending a hand-written thank you note, Cathy - with characteristic warmth and grace - has always demonstrated an unshakable belief in the power of an Ursuline education.
A second-generation alumna, mother of an alumna, major donor, former trustee and, most recently, head of our Advancement Office, Cathy’s profound understanding of Ursuline’s traditions, values, and spirit imbued her actions and spoke of her love for Ursuline.
In summer 2024, Cathy concluded her tenure as our Director of Philanthropy—a role she held with distinction, vision, and a deep commitment to the school’s mission.
In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, Cathy was honored on June 1, 2024, during the reunion festivities, with the inaugural Cor Ursulinae Award for Excellence and Achievement. As alumnae rose in a standing ovation, President Colleen Melnyk bestowed this new award.
It celebrates individuals who exemplify the very heart of Ursuline through their dedication, selflessness, and commitment to service. This award recognizes those who willingly give of themselves to support the needs of The Ursuline School community, who have a significant and lasting impact on our community, and enrich the Ursuline experience for students, families and alumnae alike.
Previously recognized with the St. Angela Award in 1994 and the St. Ursula Award in 2004, Cathy’s dedication to our core values has long been evident. Her impact is reflected in the countless ways she created opportunities for students to grow as learners and leaders, and the vibrant spirit of community that she cultivated across all constituencies.
One of her many important contributions is CROWDS4TUS, our annual Giving Day that has become a highly anticipated fundraiser and community builder over the past 10 years. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Cathy took that day of generosity and turned a portion of it outward, to raise funds for local food pantries. She then organized student leaders to launch The Cereal Effect, a schoolwide annual project to provide cereal for children in need of a healthy start to their day. These events epitomize Cathy: always thinking about how we can serve more, give more, and connect more.
As Director of Philanthropy, Cathy strengthened our Annual Fund campaign, secured major grants, and significantly increased scholarship endowment. Notably, Cathy successfully completed the capital campaign “Fulfilling the Promise for Generations of Women” and led the fundraising efforts for the more recent transformational “Innovation Campaign” that exceeded its $8.5 million goal. Her work made possible new learning spaces, a bright welcoming lobby and modern admissions suite, a student work and social space, and more functional administrative offices. Through her tireless efforts, Cathy ensured that Ursuline’s campus continues to serve the needs of today’s students.
The Cor Ursulinae Award - the “Heart of Ursuline” - is a tribute to what Cathy has done and who she is. It is with deep gratitude and admiration that Ursuline honored Cathy Fay McCarthy with this distinction.
Milena Fava-Pastilha graduated from the University of Notre Dame in May of 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and minors in Data Science and Digital Marketing. While at Notre Dame, she had incredible opportunities for internships and research. Beginning in her freshman year, Milena interned with the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media where she learned about the importance of diversity in various forms of media and the ways in which data is mobilized to score media for inclusivity. Lily Sheahan graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelors of Science in Economics (Cum Laude) and a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology in May 2023. The highlight of her college experience was her study abroad semester in Madrid, Spain, a city that she had visited in her junior year at Ursuline when she took advantage of one of the many travel opportunities that they have to offer. Losing a year and a half of her time on campus to Covid, Lily made the most of her junior and senior year by getting involved with the campus magazine, UDress, and playing intramural volleyball. Although the next steps in her career/education are uncertain, she is excited for what the future holds!

After Ursuline, she attended
The University of Edinburgh in Scotland where she recently received a bachelor’s degree in law. While initially nervous to move to another country, Mairead is so grateful that she did. The pandemic and online classes made her first year unique, but despite it all she found Edinburgh to be an amazing city. She quickly made friends and started to feel at home in Scotland. Meeting people from all over the globe with different backgrounds and interests gave Mairead the opportunity to travel across Europe. She enjoyed a few trips with her Ursuline friends, too!
Mairead studied a full curriculum of law classes from jurisdictions all over the world. The staff at Edinburgh were incredibly helpful with her studies and adjusting to University life. During her final year of studies, Mairead completed a dissertation which researched changing investment law trends in North America. She graduated summer 2024 with a Bachelor’s degree in Honors Law. Mairead feels so lucky to have had this experience and thanks her Ursuline community for getting her there. She returned home where she plans to work as a paralegal before pursuing law school in America. Mairead shares, “I am so happy to say that I’m still close with many Ursuline girls who continue to inspire me with their accomplishments.”

These are the In Memoriam notices received by the Advancement Office as of October 31, 2024.
A generous spirit, wise counsel, and commitment to education are distinctive qualities of individuals who make the world a better place. These words describe Constantine L. Clemente, who passed away on March 3, 2024.
Constantine (Tino) Clemente was a graduate of Fordham Prep, College of the Holy Cross, and Columbia Law School. The majority of his legal career was at Pfizer, Inc. where he rose to the position of Executive Vice President--Corporate Affairs; Secretary and Corporate Counsel. He also served as chairman of the intellectual property committee of the United States Council for International Business.
Tino and Ann Clemente raised three children: Arthur, Stephanie and Emily. Both Stephanie and Emily attended The Ursuline School in the 1980s.
Out of their deep commitment to education and a desire to help Ursuline flourish for all students, Tino and Ann invested in Ursuline thoughtfully and with extraordinary generosity. Over the course of many years, they donated to build science labs and a broadcast studio and a new Admissions suite. They endowed a scholarship, funded a graduation award, and provided major financing to launch our global education program. They enhanced the physical campus and they transformed the lives of Ursuline students.
Certain of their philanthropy was a result of great tragedy turned into opportunities for young women. After the
heartbreaking loss of their daughter Emily, in her senior year at Ursuline, Tino and Ann Clemente established the Emily Clemente Memorial Scholarship, in memory of Emily, an outstanding student and leader at Ursuline. It is the only full-tuition scholarship offered annually at Ursuline. Since 1989, this cherished scholarship has been awarded to 35 students. The Clementes endowed the scholarship to ensure that it will exist in perpetuity.
Inaugural Emily Clemente Memorial Scholarship recipient Renee Hogan DiBenedetto ’93 has written, “Words cannot express the extreme and intense gratitude that I have for the opportunities the Emily Clemente Memorial Scholarship provided me. Without it, I would not have been able to attend Ursuline and I am not certain my story would have turned out the same. I have always been so proud to be the first recipient, and I will strive to continue to live my life with love and integrity and keep Emily’s spirit alive.”
Thousands of Ursuline girls have benefitted from learning in the Emily Clemente Science Labs and exploring the world of journalism in the Stephanie Clemente Broadcast Studio (SCBS), named in memory of their oldest daughter, Stephanie ‘83, who died in 2013. Tino and Ann consistently upgraded the educational programming at Ursuline, providing enhanced opportunities for students.
Recognizing the importance of students understanding global issues, the Clementes gave generously to Ursuline’s Global Education & Serviam Program, providing the matching funds needed to secure the Edward E Ford Foundation grant in 2017. Tino also partnered with Ursuline by offering guidance and problem solving to help build our Program. He served as keynote speaker at our second annual Global Symposium and leveraged his contacts to create an expert panel on the symposium topic, trachoma, the leading cause of blindness in the world.
Most recently, as part of the Innovation Campaign, the Clementes made possible the Ann Clemente Admissions Suite, a modern and welcoming space for prospective families. With every act of support, Tino shared his keen insight and unwavering commitment to Ursuline.
Long-time community member Peter J. Callahan passed away on May 9, 2024. The father of Christine ’83, Carolyn ’84, and Patricia ’86, Peter was a man whose generosity of heart took many forms. Educated by Franciscans, Peter embodied their values of faith, compassion, and responsible stewardship.
Peter Callahan was born in Astoria, Queens and attended St. Francis Prep in Williamsburg where he starred on both the football and baseball teams. He graduated from St. Francis College in New York before going on to Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
His business career began at the accounting firm Peat Marwick, and culminated in the position of chairman of Mcfadden Holdings, a magazine publishing house.
In the 1980s, after attaining success as a publishing and media executive, Peter discovered excitement and joy as an owner and breeder of Thoroughbred horses, applying his accountant’s precision and diligent research to performance statistics and bloodlines. The crowning triumph of his decades-long involvement in horse racing was in 2020 when his three-year-old filly, Swiss Skydiver, won the Preakness Stakes. The Thoroughbred’s name was inspired by one of his granddaughters.
While these business and horse racing achievements were impressive, Peter was not defined solely by these successes. He believed it was vital to share resources, provide for others, and “make good things happen” as Carolyn shared. His daughters fondly recall how much he enjoyed sitting down at the end of each year to write out checks to causes he believed in—a reflection of both his gratitude and his deep sense of responsibility to give back. Throughout his life, he supported small organizations that provided basic necessities, hospitals, and medical research initiatives. His commitment to Catholic causes, in particular Catholic education, was profound. The Callahan family began contributing significantly to Ursuline more than 35 years ago, before we had even formed an Advancement Office. Those gifts in the early years inspired others to give to Ursuline.
The Callahan leadership gift to the 2013 “Fulfilling the Promise” Campaign set Ursuline on a course for fundraising success. They later helped to close out that campaign with the establishment of the Ursula Pioli Callahan Scholarship in memory of their beloved mother and grandmother. It was a wonderful illustration of the importance of creating life-changing opportunities through scholarship. In a similar fashion, the Callahans played a pivotal role in the recent Innovation Campaign.
Peter understood the importance of contributing to the school beyond paying tuition, that giving back is a vote for our mission and an investment in Ursuline values. He instilled this ethos in his daughters, who have become the second Callahan generation to demonstrate remarkable philanthropy.
Notably, Peter’s philanthropic spirit went beyond financial donations. One of his greatest gifts was his mentorship. Peter was fortunate to have had an important mentor in his career, and he, in turn, was always on the lookout for opportunities to mentor. He liked being around young people with good ideas for eclectic investments, whom he would describe as entrepreneurial and a reminder of his own early years. His mentoring took on a special form with his daughters, whom he imbued with confidence and strong belief in their ability to achieve anything they set their minds to. Indeed, family was his cherished treasure. He made time not only for his daughters but also his grandchildren, visiting them at college and cheering them on at their sporting events.
In American horse racing, the highest honor is the Triple Crown. In life, Peter Callahan was a Triple Crown human being - beloved father and grandfather, exceptional philanthropist, and caring mentor.
“I attended Ursuline schools from kindergarten through college. Not a day goes by that I don’t draw a value-based thought or insight from my experiences along the way. My formative high school years were by far the most poignant in establishing the core of who I am, and I am ever grateful to my parents for having sent me here.
I have always known I would include Ursuline in my estate, but until now I felt it was a private matter, and might seem self-promoting to announce it in these pages. I had a change of heart when I learned about The Legacy Society and its timely need for awareness, and to demystify what it entails. Participation does not require great wealth, no gift is too small, and you can direct your gift to what is most important to you. I am designating my gift to need-based scholarship.
It will be up to us lay faithful to carry on for the Ursulines in providing educational excellence in the Catholic tradition for generations to come. It was a very simple process to decide, designate and declare my intentions in writing — with tremendous gratitude for the Order of St. Ursula. Ac Fui.”
