Excellence in People & Talent WINNER

Starting with the heart of the organisation, people and talent. This year’s nominees led their organisations through phenomenal growth while maintaining cultures which are so critical to their organisations. Many of them also work externally to help other scale-up organisations and champion the need for diversity in all its forms.

Katarina Berg Chief HR Officer, Spotify

Andrea Pattico Chief People Officer, MVF

Spotify as a business and HR as a function have both come a long way since Katarina joined the company in late 2013. She has led the people strategy development and execution through the company’s whirlwind transition from start-up to a mature, international, and, recently, successfully listed public company.

Andrea has repositioned MVF’s HR team to a People Team with the mandate to be culture champions. In the past 12 months, the team launched an award-winning onboarding program (StartSmart) and a Management Development Academy which has since been accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management. Andrea’s strategy to move MVF from a ‘perkplace’ to having a holistic Health and Wellbeing strategy was recognised as a differentiator for the Company’s ranking in the Sunday Times Top 100 – MVF moved from No. 6 to No. 2 in the UK, and to No. 1 in London.

Katarina and her team are focused on the company’s long-lasting hyper growth and move into new markets. The company strategy operations, mission, and values also sit with her, and the People team are building both culture and the business by enabling, engaging and empowering employees. “Think global, act local” is the Spotify philosophy for people, culture, and compensation. Spotify is diverse, innovative and ever-changing, and being data-driven is core, so Katarina’s mission has been to grow leadership, reinvent processes, disrupt HR and make sure the digital infrastructure provides all the necessary data to establish an environment where creative and passionate people can be their very best.

RUNNER UP

Andrea’s work has not only impacted employee engagement and culture, it has significantly improved core processes. This has resulted in reducing hiring time by 50%. Andrea and her team also hired for double the roles originally forecast by the business as it went through a period of rapid growth.

RUNNER UP

Ellie Romer-Lee VP People, Onfido

Maren Kroll VP HR, Harry’s

Ann-Marie Cooper Head of HR, Europe, Intuit

Since Ellie joined Onfido in 2014, the company has grown to 180 people across six locations on three continents – and it continues to grow strongly, having seen a 4x increase in revenue in the past 12 months.

The last year has been big for Harry’s – in addition to launching in the UK, the brand has expanded into key US retailers including Walmart, and continued to expand its directto-consumer presence and brand. Maren’s contribution within the People function has included creating an open feedback culture centred on shared values and building an atmosphere of trust, transparency, innovation, and leadership.

In the last 18 months, Intuit’s customer growth has increased by 173% and the company has won two awards: 2018 Financial Software Vendor of the Year award and 2018 Customer Success Champion of the Year. During this time headcount has increased by 40% and employee engagement has increased from 78% to 89%. Resulting in two additional awards for Culture: Number 3 UK Great Places to Work & Employer of the Year for Gender Diversity.

With such rapid scaling, Ellie enables business performance by ensuring that the right people are in the right roles, with the right responsibilities and mandates. In particular, Ellie stresses the need for the People function to ‘unblock sticking points’ within the company’s operations. Ellie has spoken to start-up CEOs at seed events, run workshops for other players in the tech industry, and mentors at a scale-up academy – thereby contributing her expertise across the growth curve.

As well as designing a new compensation framework and performance review system that incorporates a strong element of peer review, Maren also led a project to redesign the physical office into a more open-plan space, as well as introduced company German and English classes.

Ann-Marie is proud of helping the business scale and helping to build the culture and engagement during a phase of high-growth. She created a Personal Development Programme with a focus on leadership, engagement and development and also launched the first employee annual kick-off event: GetTogether – 97% of employees said they felt more connected as a result of attending the event.

Excellence in Data WINNER

Data and digital go hand in hand. Leaders in this category have driven change through data inside their organisations, and created personalised experiences for their customers outside the organisation.

Tom Betts Chief Data Officer, Financial Times

Vince Darley VP Growth, Deliveroo

Tom and his team have led a transformation at the FT and have been one of the earliest in their industry to develop and invest in data. All decisions are now underpinned by data, from Finance and HR to the newsroom. His team’s work has shown a link between reader engagement and higher revenue. Other innovative data driven technology include “Janet Bot”, a scanning technology, that lets editors know if the homepage is too maleorientated.

Vince has played a significant role in Deliveroo’s incredibly fast growth. The business grew 600% in 2016-17, and the product & data improvements made by Vince’s team have led to substantial commercial impact. He has hired and developed a team of 60 senior data scientists to embed algorithms and analytics across all product areas.

Results of all this work speak for themselves. The FT had its best ever year last year, with 15% year-on-year growth despite falls in print subscriptions.

08 p DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018

RUNNER UP

He has led the push to improve understanding of marketing costs across all channels, getting both the board and management team to buy-in to a new approach to marketing decisions. This has led to radical changes to what was spent where, and a complete restructure of the digital marketing teams. Vince is now focusing on crucial growth initiatives, including scoping out expansion of the Deliveroo Plus subscription programme to reward loyal customers, the referral programme to accelerate new customer growth, and new product developments which aid both restaurants and customers.

RUNNER UP

Katia Walsh Chief Global Data & Analytics Officer, Vodafone

Janne Koivunen Director, Business Intelligence, Rovio Entertainment Corporation

Rafael Herrera Chief Data Officer, AUTO1 Group

Katia has built some of the world’s largest secure data-holding platforms. Her team’s work is enabling Vodafone to enhance its services by using large, anonymised data sets to better anticipate the likely needs of customers in different situations.

Janne is part of the Games business unit management team and he leads a team of 16 professionals working on data science and analytics for one of the world’s best known entertainment companies, Rovio Entertainment, the creator of Angry Birds. Janne ensures everyone on his team is embedded in the business and plays a vital role in creating the best mobile games in the world.

In two and a half years, AUTO1 Group has grown from 30 to 4,500 employees. Rafael has created fully automated reporting for all of the firm’s 11 B2C markets and 40 B2B markets. He has scaled the company’s data and technology capabilities to cope with this level of hyper growth. He has created advanced predictive analytics to give managers a granular understanding of the company’s complex and fragmented market.

Janne is proud of his amazingly talented team that has established a “data culture” in an industry that traditionally prioritised creativity over data-informed decisions. Janne’s team plays a key role driving data knowledge across Rovio’s organisation, ensuring Rovio’s Games as a Service strategy can be fully optimised. He and his team have been pivotal in managing the ROI on marketing spend, which played a big part in helping the company reach 55% revenue growth in 2017, and break the all-time milestone of four billion game downloads in 2017.

Rafael was the sole data and analytics leader when he joined, and he has now built a team of 20. He reports to the founder and CEO, and also established the recruitment and HR performance management processes for the company globally.

Katia has also built a highly qualified team of 300 data professionals – including world leaders in their fields. She is rolling-out an educational programme within Vodafone on machine learning and has created an internal research community where Big Data and Advanced Analytics team members are able to spend 15% of their time on cutting-edge research.

RUNNER UP

John Veichmanis Chief Marketing Officer, Farfetch

Maya Moufarek Chief Marketing Officer, Pharmacy2U and ChemistDirect

Farfetch has seen tremendous growth in the last year, passing the $1bn turnover point and operating in 190 countries.

ChemistDirect and Pharmacy2U merged in 2016 and Maya became CMO for the whole group. Since the merger, Maya and team have overhauled the brand strategy and the entire online experience.

John and his team are responsible for all demand generation, with marketing at the core of this. Previously brand and digital performance marketing were two separate teams. As CMO he has brought them together and is proud of uniting these teams. He has fundamentally driven a new approach to marketing at Farfetch. A quarter of his team are data scientists and analysts, and another quarter are engineers. Importantly they are all working together to solve customer problems.

Pharmacy2U is the fastest growing pharmacy group in the UK. Website traffic and online registrations have risen dramatically and customer acquisition has grown 350% yearon-year. This is equivalent to opening 15 physical pharmacies a month. Maya and team have also quantified the effects Pharmacy2U has on patients and the NHS. The firm has been invited to advise on how to ease the strain on the NHS, including meeting with Theresa May’s special advisor.

RUNNER UP

Darryl Bowman Chief Marketing Officer, Funding Circle

Katie Prentke English Chief Marketing Officer, Nutmeg

David Sandström Chief Marketing Officer, Klarna

As global CMO Darryl is challenging the ways companies market to small and medium sized businesses. Having undertaken a global rebrand in multiple languages, Funding Circle has the ambition to become one of the few global brands in the SMB space. To support this ambition, Funding Circle has recently begun a provocative integrated advertising strategy. Darryl’s team spans the US, UK and Europe. As a result of their brand efforts, coupled with their deeply analytical approach to performance marketing, Funding Circle has helped companies around the world unlock 75,000 jobs and generate £4bn of GDP globally in 2017.

Katie joined Nutmeg in June 2016 as Commercial Director, and is now CMO, where she is responsible for Marketing and Product.

Key to David’s role at Klarna is moving the business from its solely B2B brand, into being a combined B2B/B2C offering. Working towards this has meant moving away from a ‘traditional marketing team’ to a more agile, task-oriented working groups organised by competency.

In her role, she has led much of Nutmeg’s continued growth and success. She has expanded Nutmeg’s above-the-line marketing activity, increased the company’s digital marketing capability, and developed its partnerships and referral programme. She has also launched a number of the business’ key products, including Nutmeg’s mobile app. Nutmeg was one of just three providers to launch the new Lifetime ISA (LISA) product on the day it was made available by HMRC. This is a testament to Katie’s leadership and customer focus.

More broadly, Klarna is pushing into the realm of truly global reach – now working alongside international players such as ASOS, Google, and Ticketmaster. David is confident that – particularly in terms of marketing-driven commercial partnerships – the company will continue its transformation into a global digital brand over the next year.

Under Katie’s leadership, the business has reached a number of impressive milestones – most notably, being the first robo-advisor in Europe to reach £1bn in AUM and over 50,000 customers at the end of 2017.

DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018 p 11

Excellence in Product WINNER

The product leaders in this category combine bold vision, world-class team leadership, excellence in delivery, and a commitment to creating amazing experiences for their users.

Kyle McGinn Director, Product, Workplace by Facebook

Ephraim Luft Chief Product Officer, Farfetch

Kyle leads product management for Workplace, a collaboration platform made by Facebook. The whole company use the product internally and it launched to the public in October 2016. They now have over 30,000 organisations using it globally, from start-ups (Spotify), to multi-nationals (Walmart). It’s entirely built out of Facebook’s London engineering site and the team work very closely with the global sales team to gain direct market feedback on the product.

In his role, Ephraim leads the product management, product design, data science and product analytics functions across Farfetch. He has led the product management of Farfetch’s platform ecosystem, including the Farfetch marketplace, white label business and retail innovation business unit. Ephraim leads a team of 300, which grew from 20 employees in just three years.

The team build features unique to Workplace (like Office365 and GSuite integrations) but also incorporate features from Facebook itself to Workplace. For example, Kyle and team integrated Facebook Live into Workplace in only a few weeks, fully customising the streaming programme to ensure it was suitable to use in a company environment.

12 p DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018

RUNNER UP

The company now has a much deeper understanding of its customers and its relationships with them: the customer engagement score from its app has been double that of any competitor. Ephraim has been instrumental in this and in creating innovative products for the firm’s platform; these use machine learning to bring in a much wider range of suppliers. This has increased customer engagement with the platform. Farfetch also launched the platform in Arabic and has done so far quicker than their competitors.

RUNNER UP

Niv Liran Chief Product Officer, AUTO1 Group

Emil Martinsek VP Product Management, GetYourGuide

Piero Sierra VP Product, Skyscanner

In almost six years, AUTO1 Group has grown to over 3000 employees, generates revenue of over €2bn and is now Europe’s leading car trading platform. Niv runs a team of 170 engineers, along with 20 product managers and five designers.

GetYourGuide is the leading booking platform for travel activities. Headquartered in Berlin with offices across the globe, the company employs a global team of over 450 employees, and has raised a total of $170m in VC funding, most recently a $75m Series D in November 2017.

Skyscanner was purchased by Ctrip at the end of 2016 for £1.4bn. The parent company has given them independence in their strategic decisions but provided backing to scale the business.

AUTO1 Group’s reinvention of the entire used-car buying process for a purely online experience was a large undertaking, and Niv was particularly instrumental to the success of AUTO1 Group’s product that involves buying cars from private sellers and selling them to the professional market. He works closely with the CTO and has made a raft of important technology decisions that helped them to scale the business quickly and make the founders’ vision a reality.

As VP of Product Management, Emil has played a vital role in GetYourGuide’s growth strategy, particularly in scaling performance marketing capabilities. Products built by Emil and his team connect the company with tens of millions of consumers across digital touchpoints. More recently, Emil’s team has driven market-leading mobile growth, on pace to account for the majority of GetYourGuide bookings in the year ahead.

Piero has been directly involved in all Skyscanner’s biggest initiatives across the past two years, including the introduction of their Direct Booking product that keeps customers on Skyscanner to complete bookings. This has raised conversion rates by more than 150% for returning users. It has been transformational to the business, and partners now include British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair and Virgin Australia. Piero has also worked on Smart Search that uses machine learning to find the most relevant flights for a customer, and made the whole platform app first.

RUNNER UP

Ronen Benchetrit Chief Technology Officer, Zopa Ronen has been fundamental in preparing Zopa for its second decade of business. He has also provisioned the architecture for their proposed bank launch, putting more structure into tech and product delivery as well as leading the productisation of IT and Operations. These changes have put the business on the right path to further scale in a sustainable way and to face increased regulation and scrutiny as Zopa becomes a bank. Finally, Ronen has taken Zopa’s crossfunctional Tribes and Squads to the next stage of their evolution whilst increasing their level of engagement. He has created an environment where all squads can deliver per their autonomous roadmaps with speed and quality, without compromising safety or the demands of a regulated environment.

#GreenCubes

RUNNER UP

Paul Cutter Chief Technology Officer, Paddy Power Betfair

Holly Mesrobian Director, Software Engineering, Amazon Video

Derek Wise Chief Technology Officer, Grapeshot

As Paddy Power Betfair’s first CTO as a merged business, Paul faced a significant challenge from the outset: the digital integration of two already large businesses, bringing two successful brands together onto a single technology platform. Achieving this within two years of the merger is something that Paul considers his primary achievement so far.

Holly is a Director of Software Engineering for Amazon Prime Video, based in the UK. She moved here three years ago from the US where she led the charge as Director of Engineering for Fashion at Amazon. She began her career in technology more than 20 years prior as a developer and since has held numerous international technology leadership roles including General Manager of Real Networks’ Platform Engineering team, and CTO of Cozi which was acquired by Time, Inc.

Derek has led a transformation of Grapeshot’s technology division over the last year, growing a world-class team of top-tier engineers and data scientists, and instilling a culture of transparency, pace, and innovation.

This is particularly the case given that the integration ended up being much more than the ‘sum of its parts’, involving (for example) the creation of an entirely new data architecture and a new private cloud hosting platform. The result of this is that, more than simply fulfilling a necessity, the digital merger has created a lasting point of strength for the combined business.

At Amazon in the UK, she leads a global software engineering organisation focused on ensuring a high-quality viewing experience for Prime Video customers across hundreds of different device models worldwide.

Working closely with the founder, Derek has been a crucial member of Grapeshot’s executive leadership team in the build-up to, and through the process of, Oracle’s acquisition of the business in April 2018. Grapeshot is a provider of brand safety and pre-bid contextual solutions to over 5,000 of the world’s leading marketers. Every month, over 38 billion programmatic ad impressions are enhanced using Grapeshot’s Contextual Intelligence Platform in dozens of languages, resulting in well over 100% year over year growth for the company.

DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018 p 15

Excellence in Commercial Management WINNER

The achievements of this year’s nominees include global expansion, hyper organic and acquired growth, rapid internationalisation and progressive digital transformation of commercial teams.

Melissa Di Donato Chief Revenue Officer, SAP

Stuart Collingwood GM EMEA, Anki Inc.

Melissa joined SAP in November 2016 and was asked to turn the global ERP sales team into a fast-moving cloud-based business. She has grown the team of 10 she inherited to over 500 people in 12 countries. The ERP business is now the fastest growing natively built part of SAP, and the fastest growing division in the company’s history.

Anki is a leading robotics and AI company. Founded in 2010 by Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute graduates in San Francisco, Anki is defining a new category of consumer entertainment products through the pioneering use of technology usually confined to laboratories and research institutes.

Melissa has built a fully operational, global sales team across all customer segments. She helped identify and hire the team and provided training on how to attract, win and provide the service to make customers successful. She has also created a culture that is recognised as future-focused: passionate, disruptive, fast-paced, innovative and successful.

16 p DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018

RUNNER UP

Stuart drove the expansion of Anki into Europe in 2014 and in 2017, was instrumental in the successful introduction of Cozmo, Anki’s AI powered robot into the region. Cozmo was the best-selling toy of 2017 on Amazon in the UK and France, the UK’s best-selling premium priced toy and the UK’s best-selling toy in the forth quarter of 2017. Instrumental to Anki’s success in Europe has been the balance of tailoring the company’s ‘go to market strategy’ to each of the European territories it operates in, whilst bringing across the unique culture of Anki from its US HQ.

RUNNER UP

Paul Fifield Chief Revenue Officer, UNiDAYS

Alan Clark VP Sales, Sage Business Cloud People

Andy Sleigh Chief Commercial Officer, ClearScore

UNiDAYS have never raised external capital and Paul has led the profitable revenue growth from $2m in 2014 to $40m in 2017. UNiDAYS had 90% YoY revenue growth in 2017 in the UK, with 300% YoY in the US.

Alan’s journey began at Fairsail, where as part of the company’s leadership team, a £110m valuation was achieved in its sale to Sage last March. Having rebranded to Sage Business Cloud People, a global HR and People system, the team has recently broken into new, rich geographies including Australia, Canada and Germany. Having recorded 95% revenue growth year-on-year, the goal is to utilise this market expansion to maintain momentum. A key to this being the continued development of strong customer profiles – something Alan plays a leading role in. As well as seeing incredible growth in the business, Alan also highlights the extent to which he has developed people internally. The sales team has scaled from six to 53 during his tenure.

ClearScore doubled its user base to over six million registered users in the UK in the past 12 months and more than doubled UK revenue to around £30m. In March, it was announced that Experian would buy ClearScore for circa £275m, less than two and a half years after its launch.

In the last six months, Paul has built a commercial team from 30 to 120 people across the New York, Sydney, London and Nottingham offices with senior hires from Google, Facebook and AOL. Paul also negotiated and closed the deal with Apple in Cupertino to embed their verification technology into over 1 billion devices globally to power the Apple Music student program in 114 countries. And over the last 12 months secured global partnerships with over 100 major corporates including Samsung, L’Óreal, Dominos, Nike and Vodafone.

A lot of ClearScore’s success has been down to using data to underpin decision-making. Andy played a key part in initiating and executing the work behind that. He has led groundbreaking work in collaborating with ClearScore’s lending partners to co-create new products that address under-served market segments. Working with Justin Basini, CEO & Founder, Andy has also reorganised the company into a Tribes and Squads model. He also oversaw 10x growth in his team to over 30 people throughout 2017.

Fiona Greiner Chief Financial Officer, MATCHESFASHION

Juan García Braschi Chief Financial Officer, Cabify

Michael Bannon Chief Financial Officer, Improbable

As CFO, Fiona was integral to the sale of MATCHESFASHION to Apax Partners for $1bn in 2017 and ran the diligence process for MATCHESFASHION. She has also owned the development and implementation of the company’s data warehouse and business intelligence (BI) tools, which are fundamental to the company’s growth plans.

As CFO, Juan has been instrumental in Cabify’s growth across the past five years. This included expanding the firm’s presence from four countries to 13 in less than six months and raising $400m in funding since April 2016.

Michael is Improbable’s CFO, overseeing the company’s financial strategy. He joined Improbable after spending over 10 years as an investor at TPG Capital, a global private investment firm with over $70bn of assets under management.

His finance team designed a process and led allocation of funds to each business area or geographical region based on profitability and ROI ratios, and pushed the teams in charge to improve on those ratios.

Soon after joining as CFO, Michael played a key role in the successful completion of Improbable’s $502m Series B in May 2017.

She is proud of helping investors understand why the company is so special, and in the finance team’s ability to prove it with data as well. The firm has seen strong top line growth, is managing that growth profitably, and hitting its KPIs.

Juan also played a key role in setting-up a transportation company in Spain, attracting €100m investment and hiring a management team across late 2017/early 2018, in acquiring Easy Taxi in April 2016, and consolidating the industry in Latin America.

Leading the finance team, Michael has worked to ensure that Improbable is able to manage and deploy its funds effectively to make the best hires, build its SpatialOS platform and develop an ecosystem around its technology.

Excellence in General Management WINNER

Our nominees in General Management span crypto currencies to dating. What they all have in common is they have navigated their organisation through growth, complexity and disruption.

Pascal Gauthier President, Ledger

Ariane Gorin President, Expedia Partner Solutions

Through its raising of a $75m Series B – led by Draper Esprit – Ledger has become the best funded crypto start-up in history. Pascal was instrumental in advising the business through this – keeping its foundations strong, reinforcing its existing resilience, and maintaining a clear view of Ledger’s objectives and ambitions.

Ariane manages Expedia’s B2B technology solution, Expedia Partner Solutions (EPS). EPS’ mission is to unlock the power of the Expedia Group for its partners. EPS works with businesses across a wide range of travel verticals, including some of the world’s biggest companies, from United® and Norwegian Air Shuttle to Despegar and Traveloka.

Pascal’s primary role is now to build on this funding by getting the company organised, including hiring a world-class team (he has recruited over 120 people in the last 18 months) that can properly handle the complexity of Ledger’s software/hardware offering. Pascal sees his role as essentially ‘future-proofing’ Ledger – retaining its revolutionary nature while giving it the strategic roadmap, and capabilities, necessary for evolutionary scaling.

Since 2014, the business has focused on growth segments, invested in new platforms and re-engineered its go to market model. Ariane has been central to driving this, as she believes in empowering her team to be at their best. Expedia’s partner business has been one of its fastest growing areas and is recognised by CEO Mark Okerstrom as one of Expedia Group’s key growth drivers.

RUNNER UP

Eamon Jubbawy Co-founder, Onfido

Sarah Harvey Head of UK, Square

Cherry Freeman Co-founder, LoveCrafts

With its products now seeing use amongst major blue-chip clients – such as BBVA, with two additional global banks launching soon – Onfido has grown 4x in the last 12 months.

Square was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in San Francisco and has been active in the UK since March 2017. Sarah joined the business in 2016 to prepare for and drive the launch, and in that time has built a team to approaching 40 people.

Cherry has led three rounds of fundraising with a Series C in April 2017 securing £26m of investment. She then transitioned from her role managing finance and marketplace into the position of COO where she has taken responsibility for marketing, retail and operations.

Leading all executive hiring at Onfido, Eamon has been at the centre of the company’s recent management build-out – which has seen a CPO, CRO, and CFO brought on board, and which will soon include a further two C-suite executives. This has mirrored the growth of Onfido’s wider team, which has opened New York, Singapore, and Delhi offices in the last 12 months. Adding to this, Eamon says that Onfido has been able to maintain a tight-knit working culture throughout this growth phase.

Sarah oversees a range of business functions including Sales & Marketing, business development and strategy, as well industry relations. Sarah and her team are focused on bringing card payment technology to the 3.7 million small businesses that do not currently take cards. In the first year of trading, 75% of the businesses that signed up for Square were from outside of the capital, demonstrating how card payments could help to revitalise small business communities up and down the country.

She has delivered significant improvements in customer experience which have reduced customer contacts by over a third. In parallel she has overseen a focus on profitability which has delivered a four-fold increase in trading margins since November last year.

DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018 p 23

Excellence in Digital Transformation WINNER

Our leaders in Digital Transformation are changing organisations on a different scale. They are creating new experiences and products that engage huge customer bases like never before.

Patrick Miceli MD, Group TV & Digital Platforms, Sky

David Devany MD Online, Iceland

In the last 18 months, Patrick is particularly proud of the successful launch of the Sky OTT platform across Europe. He had end-to-end responsibility for its roll-out to the UK, Italy and Germany, including strategy, team and org design. A streaming platform was built in-house to scale globally with the ability to reach a broadcast level of quality through IP.

Under David’s leadership, Iceland has become the UK’s fastest-growing online grocer. Since his start, year-on-year growth has increased up to 60%, outperforming all other grocers in the sector by a considerable margin.

Patrick was also pivotal in the launch of Sky Q, a new Box generation, which was rolled out in the UK in 2017 and in Italy and Germany in 2018, with features such as fluid multi-screen viewing, voice command and personalised, algorithmic recommendations. Patrick is in charge of a large engineering software team (1600 software developers) and recently drove a deep reorganisation of the Technology team, improving the professionalism and talent across the functions.

The team has grown significantly under David’s direction and his success in revolutionising Iceland’s online product has been celebrated by several notable industry-recognised bodies, including Which?, Good Housekeeping, IGD and the Golden Grocer, who each named Iceland ‘Best Online Supermarket’. David’s strong leadership and visionary approach has inspired the team to reach for the top and achieve consistently high results in a challenging online market.

RUNNER UP

Tom Bureau CEO, Immediate Media Co.

Sigga Sigurdardottir Chief Customer & Innovation Officer, UK, Santander

Paulette Rowe MD, Barclaycard Payment Solutions, Barclays

Despite a decade at the helm of media companies, Tom says that the past 18 months have been the most exciting. Exponent Private Equity sold Immediate Media in a valuable exit of £270m at the beginning of 2017 after a competitive sales process.

In just under three years at Santander UK, Sigga has built a digital transformation division into a strategic and fully operational function that constantly challenges the bank to think differently about the needs of its customers.

Paulette and team were responsible for a record £250bn of card traffic in 2017, with Barclaycard now processing one in three of all UK card payments. As the second largest European acquirer, Paulette has been at the forefront of many recent innovations, including the rollout of contactless payments across the TfL tube and bus network.

Tom and his team have taken a heritage business, invested in technology and digital capabilities, and created a completely different platform. The company has grown to 1,300 staff and had 2017 revenues of £210m. Tom has created the right cultural environment to make that a success. He is also proud of the teams he’s built around him, often by hiring people with the right skills from adjacent industries.

Her leadership and influence can be seen in the impact she has had on how Santander now better serves its customers, approaches collaboration and achieves the level of agility needed to successfully innovate. Alongside implementing a new governance structure for innovation, she is also driving the bank’s FinTech strategy and end to end digital processes. More broadly, Sigga plays an important role in shaping and supporting the future of the FinTech ecosystem, sitting on the senior steering committee for the FinTech workstream at the Financial Services Trade and Investment Board.

Since joining, Paulette has repositioned the business from a traditional processor of f2f payments via in-store terminals to a business offering omnichannel services to some of the biggest names in retail. Paulette was responsible for a transformation programme in which Barclaycard Payment Solutions become the first scale acquirer to successfully migrate its entire portfolio of customers to a new acquiring platform in 2017. In response to the unprecedented level of innovation and change, Paulette has also rolled-out a wellbeing programme, Thrive, helping colleagues focus on self-care and better manage their work-life balance. Rising Star WINNER

Digital Masters Awards have always been about celebrating the individual. Our new category for 2018, Rising Star, shines a light on the next generation of leaders, through their sheer drive and innovation in their respective fields and companies.

Alice Delahunt

Helder Dias Ribeiro VP Engineering, Farfetch

Throughout her time at Burberry, Alice led the global Digital Marketing team, Social Media team and Brand team.

Farfetch has grown enormously over the past 18 months, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Helder’s Engineering function. This has grown from one to five engineering offices, and from 210 to 560 internal engineers.

Chief Digital Officer, Ralph Lauren & Former Global Director, Digital & Social Marketing, Burberry

As Global Director of Digital Marketing, she drove Burberry’s digital strategies across Burberry.com, 20 Social Media accounts with 50M+ fans, Email, SEO, Messaging apps and Innovation. This included partnering with leading digital platforms such as Google, Snap and Tencent, as well as innovating with new technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality. Alice joined Ralph Lauren in April 2018 in the newly created role of Chief Digital Officer. She reports to the CEO and is responsible for elevating the company’s global digital platforms and enhancing the digital experience for consumers across all channels to drive consumer acquisition, retention, value and revenue.

26 p DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018

RUNNER UP

This expansion has driven, and will continue to drive, the continuous developments in tech – across all areas, including architecture and data – that Helder sees as key to Farfetch’s success. When organisations scale the way that Farfetch has, Helder sees it as necessary to ‘throw away the rulebook’ – creating the sort of rapid iterations that have, for example, driven a 30% increase in commitment delivery rates.

#GreenCubes

RUNNER UP

Chad West Head of Marketing & Communications, Revolut

Juan Manuel Quesada Delgado Alice Newton-Rex Head of Growth, VP Product, Ebury WorldRemit

Revolut is one of Europe’s fastest growing FinTech companies, becoming a Unicorn in two and a half years, having not spent any money on marketing.

Ebury has achieved exceptional growth over the last year. With 50% revenue growth, 60% staff growth (from 380 to c.630), and eight new offices, Ebury’s place in the FT’s 1000 Fastest Growing Companies – for both 2017 and 2018 – seems well-deserved.

Chad joined the company in 2017 to drive brand awareness and growth. He set his own strategy to build a community of excited and engaged customers. Chad sees Revolut as the ‘rebels of finance’, taking on the corporate banks with loud stunts, humanising content and using emotional marketing via gifs and emojis. Chad has put the customer first in Revolut’s approach, polling new product names and organising local events which has led to the customers becoming their main marketing source; they share their experiences and engage with the ‘Rev Academy’, a blog Chad created to break down financial jargon for people from any demographic to relate to.

Playing a major part in these achievements has been Ebury’s Growth team, which Juan assembled around 18 months ago, and which has underpinned the company’s growing revenue. More directly, he has introduced cutting-edge data tools to significantly improve customer conversion rates, put in place new processes and frameworks to accelerate scalability, and helped achieve a successful product and geographical expansion into new emerging markets. Going forward, Juan looks to continue enabling Ebury to scale while maintaining its productivity and social impact. Juan is looking to continue to expand the company’s CSR programme - which he helped built out, alongside his own function over the last 18 months.

WorldRemit has grown annual revenue by 50% in the past year and raised Series C funding. As leader of the firm’s product organisation, Alice has been central to these efforts. 2018 has also seen Alice and team expand WorldRemit’s product set beyond international money transfer for the first time; For example, this included a new mobile wallet for Africa. Alice joined WorldRemit as their first product manager four years ago, and went on to build the product and design teams from scratch, which have doubled over the past 18 months. In this time, she has established a customerfocused approach to product development and has helped the company make use of the best of new technology including applying advanced machine learning techniques to fraud. WorldRemit now operates in 150 countries and Alice travels a lot to speak to users on the ground. Over the next few years, she will work on broader strategy and help the company move towards an IPO. CEO of the Year WINNER

Of all of the categories, CEO of the Year was the most hotly contested. During the judging process, everyone on our shortlist was a worthy winner through growth, pivoting their organisation, entering new markets or achieving incredible valuations.

Demetra Pinsent CEO, Charlotte Tilbury Beauty

Justin Basini CEO & Co-founder, ClearScore

In the last 18 months, Demetra has been heavily involved in building out a strong C-suite team to shoulder the next phase of Charlotte Tilbury Beauty’s growth. This involved and onboarding a COO, CMO, CTO and CFO, alongside commercial leads for North America, UK & Middle East, Europe and APAC.

ClearScore has been difficult to miss in recent months – its £275m sale to Experian has made headlines, particularly given the relative youth of the business: the figure comes out to around £11.4m of company value per month of operation.

Demetra was instrumental in securing investment from US-based Sequoia Capital, and been critical in expanding distribution into the Middle East. This involved the opening of two stores in Kuwait and Doha and launching the brand in Hong Kong in partnership with Lane Crawford. The brand has achieved global reach in record time. She is particularly proud of the in-house technology team assembled in 6 months to further enable the company’s ambitious digital agenda.

28 p DIGITAL MASTERS AWARDS 2018

RUNNER UP

Driving this valuation, Justin has led the company through true user scale – the company has more than doubled its active user base in the last 18 months to 6.5m users in the UK, generating over 2.2m active monthly users. In parallel, Justin has developed a world class team of 180 people across four continents. Justin highlights the company’s success in South Africa: working alongside the CFO and a Chief of Staff, and shielding the rest of the business from any disruption, Justin built ClearScore’s Johannesburg team, which quickly evolved into a 400k user business, from scratch.

RUNNER UP

Ulric Jerome CEO, MATCHESFASHION

Jeronimo Folgueira CEO, Spark Networks

Jason Stockwood Group CEO, Simply Business

Over the last five years, MATCHESFASHION have transformed from a buying and merchandising oriented company – making all of its sales in-store – to a global online organisation which now carries out 95% of it’s business online. In the same period, it has moved from being largely national to be truly international, with around 82% of transactions originating outside the UK: the United States now has MATCHESFASHION’s largest customer base.

Jeronimo became the youngest European CEO of a NYSE listed company when Spark Networks SE (LOV) went public in November last year. He prepared for a successful merger, and subsequent IPO, in only six months, which saw Affinitas merge with Spark Networks. Share price has increased 50% in the first six months of trading.

Jason is scaling a successful business and doing so in a “people first” way. Two recent awards are proof of this: first, Simply Business won a B Corporation certification for its environmental and social performance; and second, Jason won overall Best Leader at the Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For awards, voted for by his own employees. These are in addition to winning the Best Company award back to back in 2015/16.

Ulric credits this, to a significant degree, to the company’s creation of an impressive team – now standing at around 900, up dramatically from 120 five years ago. In particular, Ulric stresses that he has embedded in this expanded team a powerful set of organisational skills – allowing it to undergo the sort of scale it has experienced without losing momentum.

Key to this success is how Jeronimo prepared the team for the transition. He instilled the mindset of being a ‘tech-first company’, invested in technologies in-house and hired a top-class management team whilst maintaining the young, international, entrepreneurial culture. The company now has over 300 employees worldwide, with 220 in Berlin. Jeronimo, from a corporate financial background, is hugely driven by results. He has taken the company through two acquisitions, doubled revenues and their overall performance is outstanding.

He has written a book – due out in September – that explains how he thinks capitalism should evolve and how executives should lead businesses successfully in the next 50 years. This involves putting people first, focus on building trust and embedding a culture of experimentation. Jason has also ensured that all employees benefit from the growth of Simply Business by everyone being a shareholder and receiving payouts with each of the three transactions in the last five years.
