ACTIVISTS staged a sit-in at Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg’s constituency office in protest at his stance on tuition fees. The Free University of Sheffield, made up of campaigners from the UoS and Hallam, led the demonstration outside the Fulwood office, where they waved a banner reading: ‘Clegg betrayed us, we want revenge.’ About 12 protesters entered the building, intending to turn it into ‘an autonomous, collectively run learning space’, but were moved on by police. A video emerged online appearing to show a man running from a police officer after being held in the street. Several groups, including the Trade Union And Socialist Coalition, also took part, and about 30 protesters turned up in total, including two

men who climbed onto a flat roof holding a rainbow flag. It is thought Mr Clegg was in parliament at the time. TFUS said Mr Clegg’s office had become ‘symbolic of betrayal and the politics of the neoliberal establishment’ since the Liberal Democrats supported £9,000 annual tuition fees despite pledging in 2010 to stand against rises. Activist Chris Saltmarsh, who was at the demo, said it had been a success. ‘Some passers-by looked on disapprovingly but also a lot of people walking past were saying thank you,’ he added. ‘The free education movement in the UK has been revitalised and we wanted to capitalise on that. ‘We know there are a number of organisations and student groups around the UK that are joining the movement and we’re hoping this
