Fellow Union League Members,

I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season with family and dear friends. Happy New Year! Serving as the 74th President of The Union League of Philadelphia is my high honor. As you all know, our League is an iconic institution united by a shared love of country. I pledge to lead with steadiness from the helm, with the goal of leaving the League even better after my term as President—just as I’ve witnessed Past Presidents do so admirably during my 27 years as a member. Thank you for placing your trust and confidence in me.

Behind every good man is an even better woman, and I owe a debt of gratitude to my wife, Darlene, for her love, encouragement and wise counsel. Together, we raised our four children in Philadelphia, and the League has been a cornerstone of our family life. Like many of you, we’ve built a generational legacy here—a place where lasting memories are created and values are passed down.

In a 2006 Banner article titled “Why We Belong,” we shared some of our family’s fondest memories at the League:

Rebecca, then age 9: Thrilled to be a fashion diva and reunite with friends at the Father-Daughter Dance.

Ronnie, then age 7: Cherished Father-Son nights with Family Christmas a close second. Once remarked on Santa Claus uncanny resemblance to the League’s Joe Dubee: “same eyes.”

Will, then age 5: Enthusiastically decorated cookies at Family Halloween parties.

Teddy, then age 7 months: Simply content to be part of the fun.

We are honored to raise our family as members of the Union League community —a place where shared values come to life, traditions are celebrated and connections with dynamic, inspiring people flourish. It’s also where I’ve enjoyed simple pleasures, like a good cigar and conversations with friends who have become family.

I was truly blessed to share my first official event as President, New Year’s Day,

with my parents, Ron and Bonnie; my sister Debbie and sister-in-law Beth; my motherin-law Faith; and, of course, Darlene and our kids. Spending New Year’s with so many of you was very special. As always, our professional staff went above and beyond, treating us to their signature platinum-level service, for which we are deeply grateful.

Whether you experience the League with your family, as a Junior, Life Member or anything in between, you’ll find the League is responsive, meeting the evolving needs of its members across different stages of life and generations. The League thrives because it grows and adapts responsibly, all while remaining steadfast in its core principles. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that the League continues to be a vibrant and welcoming community for generations to come.

Congratulations to Past President Harry Hill for guiding our League to its strongest position in history. Under Harry’s leadership, membership, revenue and member engagement reached record highs. Significant investments were made, including the opening of the highly acclaimed Trumbauer’s. Most notably, Harry successfully led the merger which established Founding Forward, an initiative that will amplify our mission, vision and values through a transformative expansion of civic education. We are deeply grateful for all that Harry and Louise have contributed to the League—their grace and dedication have been nothing short of exemplary.

My ask of you this month is to support Founding Forward as we build upon our most important mission—helping to safeguard our country by cultivating an expanded base of informed, engaged citizens. Join us in advancing the understanding and proper application of our Constitution, and let’s work together to shine a spotlight on the enduring glory of America.

I look forward to seeing many of you on February 12 as we celebrate Lincoln Day.

Love of Country Leads, Robert M. Cavalier

Robert M. Cavalier 74th President

“Legacy is not inherited—it’s built.”

For 27 years, Robert Cavalier has been a proud member of the Union League, witnessing its profound growth and the meaningful impact it has had on members, their families and the community. Deeply inspired by the League’s mission, he describes the organization as a cornerstone of his life. His experiences at the League have shaped his values, fostered opportunities for personal and professional growth and instilled in him the importance of calculated risks, collaboration and staying true to his core principles.

As a husband and father of four, Cavalier has seen the League through many lenses, giving him a unique perspective on its significance and potential. The League has played a significant role in his family’s story, from cherished traditions like “Date with Dads” and Father-Son Programs to events such as Public Affairs lectures, Armed Services luncheons, Lincoln Day and Gold Medal awards (a program Cavalier thinks all members should attend at least once). These experiences have taught his children the importance of legacy, tradition, decorum and building relationships rooted in kindness.

Now, as President, he will continue the legacy of extraordinary leadership that has defined the League’s success, emphasized by the mutual respect and admiration between members and staff that is critical to the League’s thriving culture. Guided by love of country, Cavalier is committed to fostering a welcoming environment where members can genuinely enjoy their time, build meaningful connections and contribute to the vitality of League Life.

In this interview, we explore Cavalier’s journey with and dedication to the Union League, and his vision for the future.

Looking back on your career, is there a moment that profoundly shaped your approach to leadership?

There are two pivotal moments. Early in my career, a managing partner attorney said I carried myself with an “air of informed confidence,” which positively influenced others. That moment highlighted for me the importance of being prepared for the task at hand and developing and succinctly delivering a well-laid plan. An effective leader is one who does so by consensus.

Later, when I was 33 and opened my law firm, I learned the importance of trusting instincts, persistence and staying the course during challenging times. I also learned to respect the motivations of those who work alongside me. This year, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Lucas and Cavalier, LLC —a milestone that underscores the power of those lessons and expresses an inner determination of entrepreneurship.

What role do you see the Union League playing in the broader Philadelphia community under your leadership?

The Union League has always been a pillar of civic engagement, and we’ll continue to strengthen our ties to the broader Philadelphia community. We’ll build upon our relationship with Mayor Parker and her teams, particularly those who work tirelessly to protect and serve our city, like the Philadelphia Police Department. We’ll strengthen our contributions to local organizations through volunteerism, scholarships, civic education and charitable giving. I hold especially dear the Abele Scholarship program, offered through Founding Forward, to the children of our professional staff—a testament to our commitment to supporting those who make the League what it is.

What aspects of the League’s history and culture do you cherish most and how do you plan to ensure they remain relevant for future generations?

Legacy is not inherited—it’s built. By understanding the context, perspectives, sacrifices and achievements of those who came before us, we can help inspire younger generations to chart their own paths and build their own legacies while upholding shared values. Our charitable foundation, Founding Forward, which educates students and educators nationwide, is key to preserving and passing on these principles. I’m excited to champion these efforts and ensure they continue to inspire future generations.

Was there a particular member or event that helped you feel an immediate connection to the League?

I have two. At a prospective member reception, a member named Warren Palitz approached my wife, Darlene, and I and broke the ice with a humorous comment, something along the lines of: “You must make a lot of money to have such a beautiful wife.” He then recommended clubs, such as the 12:30 Table, and activities he thought we’d enjoy, including the Juniors and the Youth Work Foundation (now

Founding Forward)—we joined them all. His warmth and enthusiasm exemplified the collegiality the League fosters, making us feel welcome from the start. Later, Past President Frank Giordano invited me to join the Cricket-Groundhog Table. FG sure set the bar high for leadership, fellowship and fun!

What’s been the most surprising or rewarding part of your membership at the League?

I expected to enjoy family time, civic activities and perhaps the business center when I joined. I didn’t anticipate gaining lifelong friends, a deeper understanding of history and civics and countless memorable experiences with my family. The exceptional qualities of members, staff and leaders over nearly three decades has profoundly shaped me and will inspire me as I step into this role. I’m ready to give back to the League that has given me so much.

If your children were to write about their memories of the League today, what do you think they’d say?

They’d likely start with the scramble to find clean dress clothes that fit for each event! They’d recall the incredible all-youcan-eat desserts, the kindness of the

staff and the sense of occasion the League always provides. More profoundly, they’d reflect on the inspiring leaders they heard speak—people who overcame challenges to build enduring legacies. They’d say they came to understand why the League and its mission are so significant to our family and the broader community.

What has been your favorite “Date with Dad” theme over the years?

When my daughter Rebecca was four or five, there was a Hawaiian-themed event. She surprised me by wearing flip-flops, a sarong and a big wig from her Lilo and Stitch costume. She completely owned the event and it’s a memory we’ll always cherish.

If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?

Principled. Authentic. Driven.

What do you hope every member of the Union League feels when they walk through its doors?

I hope every member feels a profound sense of belonging, pride, excitement and honor. The League is a place that welcomes all who share its values and where everyone can connect, grow and contribute to something larger than themselves.

HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY INVESTMENT CLUB #2

THE BROAD STREET BULLS!

Twenty years ago, 40 Union League members met to learn about forming the Investment Club #2 . I remember that day in June 2004, as we were all eager and interested in learning more. In order to form the club, we needed someone to step up as a founding member. I volunteered to start the club, and was quickly joined by five other members—Don Kaufman, Peter Engelhardt, Rick Etskovitz, Art Grugan and Frank Mayer. We had a terrific team of leaders with a blend of skills and expertise to start the club—finance, legal, banking, investments and administration. After a few months of planning, we were ready to form the club and ask for new members. We quickly filled our club with new members meeting our cap of 23 total members! In September 2004, we held our formation meeting and set up our initial plans, including a club naming contest, agreeing on our routine contribution amounts to our investment fund, setting up our monthly stock presentation member line up and signing our formation document. We also discussed our goals as a club and we agreed that we would “Learn, Have Fun and Make Money,” in that order! Our naming contest resulted in our new name “The Broad Street Bulls.” To recognize a member each year for their winning recommendation, we created the The Best Bull Award which we presented each year as part of an annual event.

We have learned a lot together about investing with discussions about stocks, bonds, gold, silver and many other forms of investing. We have lived through several

market cycles, both ups and downs plus major changes in these 20 years. We have had many lively discussions on moves to make during these times. Like so many Union League clubs, we are made up of members from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We have been enriched by each other’s experience and input and we have learned from each other. We have had over 100 presentations by our members and guests about their stock recommendations and the markets in general. Each month, one of our members presents an investment recommendation for us to discuss, debate and eventually decide if we will proceed to make a purchase along with any guiderails we want to include for future moves. We also review our portfolio periodically to make recommendations to trim back positions, add to positions or sell a position.

We have had many fun times and enjoyed camaraderie as a club. We simply enjoy each other’s company, and find that fun during our meetings and afterwards as we retire to Café Meredith for after meeting drinks and/or dinner. Laughter is a staple at our meetings, often as a result of one of our many lively discussions. We have had many memorable events including golf outings, happy hours, annual holiday dinners and social events at member homes. We weathered the pandemic together through Zoom, and welcomed back our monthly meetings at the League, where we are able to meet in person and Zoom to accommodate all of our members. We have celebrated many happy times and memories, and we have

come together to mourn the loss of our members and members’ family.

Of course, we made money which we put last. We always knew that making money in an investment club was a major goal, although we recognize that the strong foundation of knowledge and friendship enables our ability to be successful.

So, as I look back over the past 20 years, I am very grateful to have had the honor of being the founding president. I am also grateful to those founding members who have been with the club for the past 20 years—Peter Engelhardt, Karen Kaufman, Ed Paul and Suzanne Sweeney—and those members who joined the club over the past 20 years.

I want to give special thanks to our current President, Luiz Vieira, for guiding our club this anniversary year along with Vice President, Karen Kaufman. I also want to thank our long-standing Secretary, Suzanne Sweeney, who has shown great leadership over the past 20 years. Suzanne certainly keeps us all focused and has been a pillar of our club.

As I reflect on my 20 years of Union League membership, I have been enriched by being a part of the Investment Club #2 , The Broad Street Bulls, and I am certain that my fellow members feel the same. Happy 20th Anniversary Broad Street Bulls, and I look forward to many more years together!

JOIN FOUNDING FORWA RD FOR Lincoln Day! WEDNESDAY,

FEBRUA RY 12 AT 11:30 A M

The Union League of Philadelphia was established to save the Union and support President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Lincoln was the hero of the Union League from its very beginning; his assassination at the end of the war made him a martyr for both the League and the country. Today, the League pays homage to Lincoln through the nearly two dozen images of him found throughout the League House. An image of President Lincoln is represented at all League properties.

It is fitting that Lincoln Day is one of the longest standing traditions at the League. The formal celebrations date to the 19th century. Lincoln Day continues to be an annual celebration on the League calendar, with the program presented by the nonprofit charity of the League, Founding Forward (formerly The Union League Legacy Foundation).

Founding Forward invites members to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday and his incredible legacy on February 12. Exciting Founding Forward news will also be shared.

THE FLEMISH RENAISSANCE ROOM AND GEORGE HERZOG

This photograph depicts one of the League’s interior rooms from the 1902 book Chronicles of the Union League. The Flemish Renaissance Room, a private dining space, was once where Café Meredith sits today. The photograph highlights the fireplace on the north wall on the left side of the image. In 1892 , George Herzog (1851 - 1920) was contracted to design the wall motif above

the wainscoting and help decorate the room.

The League contracted George Herzog (who later joined as a member) to design and redecorate several interior spaces in the 1890s. Herzog collaborated on the Banquet Room, the restaurant, the library (what is now the McMichael Room) and

the parlor (now the Front Lounge). Today, the only piece of Herzog’s works that remains visible in the League House is the overmantel painting in the Front Lounge.

To learn more about the Flemish Renaissance Room and Herzog’s work at the League, visit the Heritage Center or email archives@foundingforward.org.
