Fellow Union League Members,

Spring is in full bloom, and so is the activity and spirit across our League. As always, our mission—Love of Country Leads remains at the heart of everything we do, and it continues to guide the wide range of programs available to our members.

Let me begin by thanking you for the overwhelming support of the President’s League Luncheon Series. On April 29, we welcomed Gordon Chang for a lively and informative discussion on U.S.–China relations. This series is designed to examine timely topics with an eye toward the future and is part of our broader America 250 celebrations. More events are in the works, and I hope to see you there.

Looking ahead, Tuesday, May 6 marks a special evening as the Armed Services Committee hosts Our Community Salutes. We will recognize approximately 75 local high school seniors who have committed to join the U.S. Armed Forces after graduation. I encourage you to attend and show support for these young individuals and their families—it’s a night that reflects the very best of our shared values.

In that same spirit, I invite you to participate in the Forget Not the Faithful Dead Dedication This tradition gives members the opportunity to honor loved ones who served in the military. Last dedication ceremony, Past President Hill paid tribute to both his mother and his brother-inlaw. These moments of remembrance are among the most meaningful our League offers.

On Wednesday, May 21 , Founding Forward will host the Scholarship Award Dinner in Lincoln Hall. This event celebrates students receiving scholarships for college and trade schools. Beyond this dinner, I encourage all members to consider sponsoring a student or teacher for Founding Forward’s immersive summer civics education programs. Please contact Founding Forward for more information.

Our golf courses are open and in excellent condition following months of off-season care by our outstanding staff. Our Marketing Team has developed a

comprehensive edition of the annual Golf Book, highlighting the beauty of our courses, memorable moments from past seasons, behind-the-scenes images from our golf professional staff and a complete preview of the programming planned for 2025 Whether you’re playing a round, attending a member event or simply enjoying a meal, the courses offer a relaxing and rewarding experience. Watch for upcoming programs from Founding Forward and others that highlight these beautiful spaces.

As we look ahead to the summer season, we are pleased to welcome you back to the shore for Memorial Day weekend. A soft launch cocktail reception on Friday, May 23 at The Whitebrier will mark the start of an exciting new chapter. While it will take time to enhance the facilities and offerings we all have come to expect, I ask for your patience as we move forward. I am confident that our Strategic Planning Committee will continue to turn vision into reality. That same weekend, National will host a festive summer kickoff celebration, and The Bungalow returns with a vibrant season ahead. We’ll share more information as we move into early summer, and we look forward to creating special memories with you and your families across our coastal League properties.

Membership interest remains strong. Under the leadership of Vice President of Membership Tom McGarrigle, the team continues to ensure that each new member is aligned with our mission and understands the importance of Founding Forward. I’m grateful to those of you who give your time to support this vital process.

As warmer weather approaches, I wish you a meaningful and restful Memorial Day with your family and friends. Darlene and I look forward to seeing many of you across our League properties in the weeks ahead. Our professional staff stands ready to welcome you and continue making memories together.

Love of Country Leads,

Robert M. Cavalier

VETERANS ALLIANCE TABLE

presents THE SPIRIT OF 1862 SPEAKER SERIES

Wednesday, May 21 at 11:30am at Liberty Hill

Honoring the seriousness of our founding purpose, this series reflects the Union League’s legacy—from 1862 to 1865, the League raised over 20,000 men to defend our nation’s sovereignty.

Our programs will focus on strategic issues and contemporary challenges facing our nation today, ensuring members are wellinformed and prepared to engage in meaningful dialogue. Join us and be “armed” with the power of knowledge. All are welcome!

Our first program will feature Union League member, Ernest Harkness, who has worked in the power generation industry for over 40 years focusing on the operation of Nuclear Power Electric Generating plants. Mr. Harkness shall speak on the current state of Nuclear Power Electrical Generation in the USA, including a discussion of waste, new Small Modular Reactor technology and electric power grid vulnerabilities to supply and stability.

Price: $55

For reservations, please log on to www.unionleague.org or call Member Events at 215-587-5565.

As we stand on the threshold of the nation’s 250th anniversary, we at The Union League of Philadelphia pause to reflect—not only on the founding ideals that shaped America, but on the sacrifices that have sustained them. Founded in 1862 to support President Abraham Lincoln and the preservation of the Union, the League has always stood as a guardian of American principles: liberty, unity and service. On the precipice of a

Throughout the year, the League reaffirms its devotion to country through acts both solemn and purposeful. From the Forget Not the Faithful Dead remembrance ceremonies, to our support of Gold Star families through Believe With Me, to our welcome of future service members at Our Community Salutes and recognition of current service members at our Armed Services Council events, each initiative reflects a pledge to honor those who have served and reaffirms our founding mission in modern terms. That pledge lives on not just at the League, but also in Valley Forge, through Founding Forward’s Medal of Honor Grove.

These efforts are not simply expressions of gratitude. They are the living embodiment of what it means to love one’s country—not with pageantry, but with purpose. In the events detailed, we invite you to explore how the League continues to champion our founding motto, Love of Country Leads. In a world that moves fast, we challenge each of our members to pause, honor and reflect.

COVER STORY

historic milestone, we are reminded of the words written in our 1899 Annual Report:

“Its object is not to live passive and tranquil amid great events… The motto of the Union League, revealed in every period of its honorable career, is ‘Love of Country Leads’— Amor Patriae Ducit.” That spirit is more than a phrase—it’s a living legacy, present in our traditions, programs and the very halls of our building.

VETERANS ALLIANCE TABLE

Forget Not the Faithful Dead Dedications

Forget Not the Faithful Dead is a Leaguewide initiative administered by the Veterans Alliance Table that honors the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation’s freedoms. The program invites Union League members to submit the names of those who have served and sacrificed, ensuring their memory lives on through formal recognition. At each Quarterly Dedication Ceremony, those names are read aloud and honored with personalized Dedication Proclamations—a gesture that reflects the deep gratitude we share as a community.

Central to the mission of the Veterans Alliance Table is the commitment to “Forget Not” those who gave it all. That solemn promise is physically and spiritually embodied in the League House through the magnificent stained-glass window of Saint Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of soldiers, protector of heaven and symbol of courage. Positioned above the Grand Staircase at Broad Street, Saint Michael stands

beneath the words “Forget Not the Faithful Dead”—a daily reminder of the sacrifice upon which our freedoms are built.

This meaningful program traces its origins to 2018, when it was established in tribute to Major Charles Izard Maceuen, the only Union League member known to have been killed in action during the Civil War. Maceuen joined the League in early 1863 and served as Assistant Secretary on the Board of Publication. Once his parole expired, he enlisted in the 198th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment—also known as the Sixth Union League Regiment—and rose to the rank of Major. He was killed in action at the Battle of Lewis Farm on March 29, 1865, just ten days before General Lee’s surrender. Maceuen was buried with military honors at Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia.

The powerful legacy of Major Maceuen inspired the League’s early commemorations and continues to serve as a guiding light. Initially introduced at Civil War Round Table meetings, the Forget Not the Faithful Dead program was revived in

2021 by the Veterans Alliance Table and expanded into a League-wide initiative in 2023 with the support of Past President Harry Hill and Louise Hill. The enthusiastic response from members and staff alike affirms the program’s place as a vital part of our League culture.

We invite all members to submit names of those who have served and sacrificed, so they may be remembered at future ceremonies. The next Forget Not the Faithful Dead Dedication Reception will take place on Wednesday, June 18 at 5:30pm at the League House.

To submit a name or request more information, please contact the Dedication Committee at ForgetNot@UnionLeague.org.

ART AND ARCHIVES

Founding Forward cares for the historic collections of art, archives, manuscripts, books, pamphlets and objects related to the Union League and the Civil War. The collections are routinely displayed throughout the League House and within exhibitions in the Heritage Center. To learn more about the collections, email archives@foundingforward.org.

CARD AND CHESS ROOM

This month’s Art and Archives highlight is a 1950s photograph of the old Card and Chess Room, now known as the McMichael Room in the League House.

With the completion of the Trumbauer 15th Street addition in 1910, the east room on the second floor of the Broad Street clubhouse became a Card and Chess Room. The League hosted tournaments for internal members along with exhibitions

that brought in experts like chess world champion Jose R. Capablanca to challenge the members in 1938. The Card and Chess Room operated from 1910 to 1988 when it was redecorated and renamed after Morton McMichael.

Traces of the old Card and Chess Room remain in the League House. One of the chess tables occupies the southwest window alcove in the library, available for

members to play a game. Many of the tournament trophies, card sets, chess clocks and other pieces of the room are cataloged and stored in the historic collections vault.

To learn more about the history of the Card and Chess Room and other rooms at the League, visit the Heritage Center or email archives@foundingforward.org.

CLUB TABLES

In 1884, Club Tables were conceived as a means of fostering and reinforcing camaraderie and friendship. Originally table members congregated around the lunch hour. Today they are looked upon as strong social centers of League Life. There are currently 18 Club Tables. Over 2,000 members belong to at least one club table. HERITAGE IN EVERY THREAD

In the age of fast fashion, the Union League chooses to be purposeful in the retail selections offered. Last year, the League released the first custom ladies’ scarf to be produced in recent years, the 2024 Heritage Scarf by Wolves of Mars Studio. Featuring the iconic Broad Street entrance of the League House, as well as the names of the first four Union League presidents, the design highlighted two pillars to the League’s beginning—a strong foundation of members and a permanent home to champion civic duty in the heart of the city.

At the center of the 2025 Heritage Scarf are architectural details from the ceiling of the Front Sitting Room. A key meeting place, the interlocking rings reinforce the enduring connections made in the space over an afternoon coffee or a late-night cocktail. Moving outward, the border features the stained-glass windows in the Lincoln Memorial Room, designed by the famous glass artist Nicola D’Ascenzo to depict the various branches of the Armed Services—offering a subtle way to display your love of country.

With the League’s rich history and values woven into these thoughtfully designed pieces, members can celebrate their legacy with style and pride.

The Heritage Scarf is available for purchase through the Online Gift Shop and at the Shop on S ansom.
