I

t’s Fair season, and the Nevada County Fair happening Aug. 7 – 11, is ready for five days of fun and excitement! Join us and find out why the Nevada County Fair has been voted by The Union’s readers as the “Best Community Event” for 13 years in a row. This Fair Guide is designed to help you get the most from your Fair experience. It is filled with daily activities, as well as a map, general information, and fun stories about the Fair. Look it over, find your favorite activity or event, and enjoy. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • Zip line 28 feet above the Fairgrounds. Go solo, race a friend on the side by side line, or simply watch as Fair-goers squeal and laugh mid-flight. • Visit Circus Imagination, where children become instant stars by being selected from the audience, put in costume and then performing in a spontaneous circus.

• See Michael Mezmer,“America’s Award Winning Hypnotist,” hypnotize audience members. • Visit the exhibit buildings filled with community exhibits. The Ugliest Decorated Cake is one of our favorite categories. Produce characters is also another fun category. • Enjoy the Idol Competition on Wednesday evening at the Pine Tree Stage. • Attend a nightly arena event – Farm and Ranch Night is Wednesday, a Rodeo on Thursday, Bull Riding on Friday, and Saturday and Sunday nights are Tough Trucks and Monster Trucks. • Sit back and enjoy the music at one of the many stages featuring live entertainment. Don’t forget the carnival rides and games, the barns full of livestock, and a visit to Treat Street for your favorite Fair-time treat.

• Nightly karaoke is back! Sing, sing a song.

For the best deals, purchase your tickets early. Advance ticket sales take place through 5 p.m. Aug. 6, and you can get some great deals if you purchase before the Fair begins. Details on discounts are listed in this book and on our website at NevadaCountyFair.com.

• Check out The Birdman, Free Flight Bird Show – featuring exotic birds.

Have fun, relax, and enjoy the 2013 Nevada County Fair!

• Have fun at the Floating Circus Duck Race on Saturday in the Special Events tent. No pre-registration required – just show up and have fun.

Fur and Feathers By Courtney McCullough Ghidotti Early College High School

The Nevada County Fair accommodates a very special area called Fur and Feathers. This section includes rabbits and any fowl, including ducks, chickens, turkeys and sometimes exotics. It is located outside in the cow barns and usually houses around 50-75 animals each year.

Courtney McCullough, who is enrolled in the Misty Mountain 4H Club, shows swine at last year’s fair.

The rabbit show is held on the Tuesday before fair so that the rabbits are judged and the youth win ribbons with their rabbits. They can also raise meat pens for rabbits, chickens as well as turkeys, and the Reserve and Grand Champions go to auction. All others are in a silent auction at the Fur and Feathers area. This also includes the children who enter market eggs and sell a gift basket with their dozen market eggs.

One of the biggest attractions is the Chicku-bator. This is usually run by the McCullough family, and they bring the eggs the day before fair, just as they are hatching so that the public can see and experience the hatching process live. They check on them often and let the public hold some of the chicks while they’re there. Children love to hold the babies, and it is great for the kids to be a part of the learning process and to interact with animals in a safe way.

I encourage people to attend the live auction as well as the silent auction to support these youth as well. Kids love to see all of the animals and occasionally the owners of the animals will be there to allow people to pet their animal and ask questions. Also check out the schedule for the costume contest with the rabbits and poultry.

I encourage anyone who loves animals or who has children to visit the Fur and Feathers for an exciting and real-life experience! Courtney McCullough is a guest writer for the Nevada County Fair. Courtney took first place in the eigth-grade Expository Writing Assignment for the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools’ writing tournament in January.

A Magical Place By Maddy Rossitto Ghidotti Early College High School

Have you ever gone into an amusement park? The feeling is thrilling when you walk through the gates, ready to partake in all of the fun that lies ahead. There are some fun rides, good food, and lots of people coming from such a long ways away just to spend some quality family time. Why travel so far when you can just drive or even walk down to the fairgrounds for the fair? All of the rides are brought to you and placed neatly among the grass in the park. You will enjoy everything from the rides to the food to the beautiful surroundings. The fair holds many rides from fast and exhilarating roller-coasters to fun and enchanting beginner’s rides for children. Whether you relish that tingly sensation shooting down your sides as you soar through the air, or you just want to watch your children squeal in happiness on the whimsical swings, the fair is just the place to have a great time with family. The fun doesn’t stop there; you can sit down with friends and enjoy a nice hot meal ranging from sticky sweet funnel-cakes to crispy golden corn dogs to a savory bowl of chicken and rice. With the many choices on Treat Street, everyone will be satisfied with full bellies. If you don’t want to go back on those rides after

you eat, you can always stroll through the grounds and take in your surroundings. Walk along the path garnished with bright yellow marigolds. Sit down under a nice shady tree and relax. Check out the Arts Barn and see the amazing crafts where children and adults alike show projects such as knitted hats and articulate paintings. Even go visit the animals in the show barn. There are many opportunities at the fair for everyone, big or small. I hope you will have great time, just as I have throughout the years. Maddy Rossitto is a guest writer for the Nevada County Fair. Maddy took second place in the eighth-grade Expository Writing Assignment for the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools’ writing tournament in January.
