It was a late Saturday evening when I finally sat down to put to paper the few short words that come to be my MUSINGS. With each edition of our various publications, MUSINGS has always been the last piece of content to be completed before it is put to bed and sent to the printer.

This particular MUSINGS is no different. And I've the bags under my eyes to prove it. No, said bags are not Gucci. Nor are they Louis.

Aside from the utter relief the team and I are feeling at this particular moment, having pulled together, researched, written, edited, and perfected the hundreds of elements required to complete this preview guide, we're also experiencing a bit of disbelief for a variety of reasons.

We're in disbelief that our calendar has already passed 365 days and that we're celebrating our favorite event of the year. And that the return to our schedule of the events of Monterey Auto Week means that we're officially in the 3rd quarter of the year. Where did the rest of the months go? Wasn't it just January

a few short moments ago? Can we please not think about Christmas?

The first store to start with the carols will be on our blacklist this year.

We're in disbelief that this year will not only be our fifth year covering the greatest series of automotive events to occur in the United States, but that it is also the 2nd year we've put together the Monterey Auto Week Preview Guide. More so, it's in print. Let's take a moment of silence in honor of what little sleep we once treasured so dearly.

With this last piece of editorial, we want to welcome each and every one of you to Monterey and to the festivities of Auto Week. We hope that our preview helps to guide your plans for the week, to find something new, to experience something special, and to being an extra bit of luxury into your everyday life.

Originally founded as an artists colony nestled into the forest, Carmel’s natural beauty and unique charm have drawn many visitors over the past 100 years, many of whom returned to make our village their home.

Carmel is best known for its architecture, breathtaking white sands beach, enriching cultural offerings, and unique events such as the Bach Festival, Annual “Pumpkin Roll”, the world-renowned Concours on the Avenue, and the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

I invite you to experience the spirt and character of Carmel: explore the shops and restaurants, take in a performance at Forest Theater or Sunset Center, or enjoy a stroll along Carmel Beach.

On a somber note, the Soberanes Fire has brought great devastation to our Big Sur area. The damage is immense. We are indebted to over 5,500 fire personnel who are battling this monstrous fire that continues to burn.

To assist the affected communities in recovery and rebuilding, we invite you to donate to the Soberanes Fire Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County.

It was not Priscilla that first tugged at the heartstrings of a young Elvis Presley. While multiple owners and a multidecade stay in storage had left an indelible mark on the convertible. a two-year ground up restoration

There are a myriad of adjectives that can be used to describe what is easily the world’s premier showcase of classic and highly coveted automobiles. However, none of them come to mind the very first time one steps foot onto the 18th Fairway at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

It may be from attempting to take in so many of what DCoopMedia calls Unicorns. Or maybe because of the immense size and sheer expanse of this particular exhibition. Either way it is quite common to feel as if one has had a religious experience after having attending the Pebble Beach Concours d”Elegance.

For the last 64 years, the quiet coastal town of Carmel and her sister city, Monterey, to the northwest, have attracted the absolute best examples of automotive design and technological prowess, showcasing alongside them vehicles of historical significance and cars so rare in existence that they’ve been sighted fewer times than Bigfoot.

Though it is the stunning display of three and four wheeled works (with a focus on two wheels as well) of art that take center stage, what truly makes the Concours a substantial event worth making the annual trek for is the temporary elimination of social, class, and economical lines amongst participants and attendees; viewer and viewed alike come together in the pursuit of furthering and exploring automotive heritage.

The Lawn, as many regulars call the Concours, shares the opportunity to not simply ogle magnificent works of vehicular design - careful not to drool on them - but to also converse with the men and women who collect, restore, and preserve them.

Of course, a Concours of any kind could never be complete without a socially extravagant experience.

Blankets are spread, Champagne flows, and picnics are had in short view from the awards stage, participants sharing stories of automotive loves lost and found.

With one of the largest collections of French vehicles in the country, the Mullin Automotive Museum will put on display a sampling of automobiles representing the spectrum of French auto design. At the heart of this display are two Chapron-bodied cars: a 1937 Delahaye 145 and 1939 Delage D8-120. Also from the Golden Era of French design are a 1927 Delage ERA and 1938 Delahaye 135M. A 1946 Delage D6-eL race car and 1950 Talbot-Lago Type 26 Grand Prix car spotlight French sensibilities in racing design while a 1972 Citroen SM reflects the more moden sensibilities of late 20th Century automotive architecture. And it wasn't until we sat down with former Rolls-Royce North America CEO Eric Shepherd that it even dawned on us. In fact, unless one is really paying attention to it one might never notice. What is it you might say?

There is a running commentary that states that "Money can't always buy taste". Certainly there is a semblance of truth to the statement.

However, what we get to see that we rarely if ever catch sight of in mainstream production manufacturers is the creativity, risk-taking, and limitless approach that comes from equally limitless resources.

When the nations wealthiest automotive enthusiasts converge on Carmel mid-August, with them comes a showcase of unbridled passion for the machines they drive.

In short, Auto Week is the cat walk of the automotive world and the stunning vehicles their models.

ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION What was once a dry lake bed situated between Salinas and Monterey, there resides 2.238 miles of double apex, hairpin, and downhill plunging curves, turns, and runs.

Known simply as “Laguna Seca”, the fabled race track originally appeared in 1957, the successor to the famous Pebble Beach Road Race. Since then, professional race car drivers and those that aspire to be them - if only in their dreams - have descended upon the track, each in the attempt to beat the time and speed records previously set by their racing idols and competitors.

During Monterey Auto Week, the track makes way for a myriad of racers, from the antique Mercedes once driven as part of the 1914 Grand Prix to rare hyper cars like Maserati’s MC12, all of whom “just want to see how fast they can go”.

The yearly Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion isn’t simply an opportunity to watch these fabled vehicles burn rubber but it is also a chance to kick tires and talk shop with the owners, mechanics, and drivers, Laguna Seca opening the Paddocks areas to the public.

The track and its surrounding fields also play host to an in-field featuring the products of wellknown automotive maintenance and aftermarket brands while major marques set up interactive displays and exhibits featuring their newest race cars and concepts.

THE FORD GT40 TRIPLE FINISH AT LeMANS CELEBRATES 50 YEARS When conjuring up images of the past winners of acclaimed international winners, it is typically the Ferraris, the Porsches, the Maseratis that come to mind first. But the late 1960s saw the traditional Italian and German victor overtaken by a determined group of competitors in an even more determined vehicle - the Ford GT40.

Taking all three podium spots, their win 50 years ago begin an unprecedented winning streak beginning with further wins at Le Mans in 1967, 1967, and 1969 followed by victories at Daytona, Watkins Glen, Sebring, Rheims, MonthlhĂŠry, Silverstone, Snetterton, Spa, Monza, Kyalami, Nurbugring, and Zeltweg.

By Matt Stone The Holy Grail of sports cars is for sale. With just one Carroll Hall Shelby, there can only be one first Shelby Cobra prototype.

The Texan had sampled several professions in his young life – oil roughneck and chicken farmer among them – and in his late 20s decided to try his hand at sports car racing. As it turned out he was good, winning his first race driving a friend’s MG and dozens more over the next decade including the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans. After running his last race in 1960, he climbed out of the cockpit for good, dedicating himself to building an American sports car that could race and beat Corvettes and Ferraris in international competition.

Shelby cast about for a chassis design, landing on the doorstep of the Hurlock family in England, producers of AC Cars and the Ace, a handsome and lightweight roadster. The Ace’s Bristol engine out of production, Shelby felt he could shoehorn a Yankee V-8 into its engine bay. The Hurlocks had no better plan - they were in. Shelby took his idea to Ford’s Lee Iacocca, asking for $25,000 seed money and samples of Ford’s newest 260 cubic-inch “small-block” V-8. Ford’s executive said yes.

Shelby, the engine, a gang of experienced racers, fabricators, and hot-rodders, and an AC chassis and aluminum body all met at the Southern California race shop of Dean Moon. In just a few days the Cobra was born - the very same historic machine offered by RM/Sotheby’s in Monterey.

With a negotiated engine supply deal and the Hurlocks set to provide the bodies and chassis, Shelby set up shop near LAX, dubbed Shelby American, to produce America’s newest sports car. The prototype, wearing a hand-punched CSX2000 number plate, was repainted a new color every other week, lending the impression that there were several Cobra prototypes extant. In Carroll Shelby’s possession from its birth, this car has appeared on countless magazine covers and as the subject of feature and road test stories. The Cobra was a success in every sense of the term, as a popular street sports car and a giant-conquering, championship winning race car. Carroll Shelby passed away in 2012, leaving a 50 year legacy of high performance car building and racing.

ROTHSCHILD & FILS Originally owned by Michelin & Cie cofounder Édouard Daubrée and having had the honor of transporting French president Raymond Poincaré during a 1913 Dordogne motorcade in his honor, the near original Delaunay-Belleville remained a loyal member of the de Brou de Laurière family for over 99 years, surviving the Nazi invasion of France during World War II after resourceful family members concealed the limousine’s tires in a neighboring chateau.

Discovered in the 1980s, the automobile received a light restoration leaving much of the original fit and finish intact before being sold at auction in 2012. The car returns to the block once again with an estimate of $500,000 to $700,000 US.

1 OF JUST 4 PRODUCED The 1963 Ferrari racing season saw just four examples of its 400-hp 330 LM Berlinetta leave the factory. The first vehicle to reach 300 kp/h on the Le Mans’ Mulsanne Straight, this particular example raced first at Sebring with legendary drivers Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini behind the wheel, followed by a fifth-place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Once the star of Federico Fellini’s Histoires Extraordinaires, the Ferrari Classiche certified racer has been piloted by a long list of top drivers including Bobby Rahal, Harry Leventis, Tony Dron, and Peter Hardman.

Although the auction will only share the estimate with qualified buyers, Hagerty Insurance places the Berlinetta’s value between $32million and $35million US. Could this set a new Monterey record?

What do you get when you combine a Ghibli Spyder, a US customer, European specifications, and a nearly preproduction 4.9L V-8 engine capable of producing 20hp more than its predecessor? You’d have the Maserati Classiche certified, Giallo yellow Maserati Ghibli 4.9 Spyder presented by Mecum Auctions in Monterey later this month.

One of just 15 examples built for the US market with European specifications, the numbers-matching drop top was originally delivered to a customer in Beverly Hills, changing hands a number of times before eventually returning to Europe for a complete, top-to-bottom restoration.

The Spyder, an extremely rare Maserati, carries an estimate of $900,000 to $1.2million US.
