Northern New South Wales enjoys a mild, year round climate with highs around 30 degrees celcius in summer (December to February) and 20 degrees in winter (June to August). Overnight temperatures get as low as around 10 degrees in winter. Our wettest month is typically February with a subtropical wet season rainfall.

Fingal & Chinderah

AS THE LONG, STRAIGHT STRETCH OF COASTLINE FROM TWEED HEADS TRACES SOUTH, FINGAL HEAD JUTS OUT TO SEA, POINTING TOWARDS NEARBY COOK ISLAND.

At Fingal Head is a rocky outcrop known as Giant’s Causeway, so named after the similar UNESCO Giant’s Causeway World Heritage Site in Ireland, which was formed by lava flows halted by the cool ocean, resulting in rock pillars that rise like steps to a peak with views clear out to the horizon. For the local indigenous people, Fingal Head is known as Booninybah, said to mean ‘home of the giant echidna’, with the volcanic columns resembling an echidna’s spiny covering.

In tranquil Fingal, you’ll also find fun surf breaks, laid-back fishing spots, chilled eateries and caravan and camping options close by.

Nearby Chinderah is a restful riverside getaway, just a stone’s throw from the beach and ideal for a bit of R&R for those who like to take it easy on holiday.

Set on the banks of the Tweed River, your Chinderah holiday to-do list could include relaxed boating with a fishing rod, SUP or kayak paddling, slow walks along the winding river, 18 holes at the local course, browsing and buying antiques with a marine theme, lazy picnics in the park, fish and chips in the sun and good cheer at the local tavern overlooking the water.

Cook Island Aquatic Reserve

KNOWN BY THE PEOPLE OF THE LOCAL BUNDJALUNG NATION AS JUNGARNGAHRIYAHN (JOONG-URRA-NARRIAN), SAID TO MEAN ‘PELICAN DANCE’, COOK ISLAND HAS ALSO BEEN KNOWN AS TURTLE ISLAND AND CONTINUES TO BE A SANCTUARY FOR BIRD AND MARINE LIFE TO THIS DAY.

One of only 13 aquatic reserves in New South Wales, Cook Island Aquatic Reserve is around 600m off shore from Fingal Head and comprises 80 hectares of protected marine area, which nurtures fish habitats and threatened species, conserves marine biodiversity and supports research and education.

Formed by lava flows from a vast shield volcano over 20 million years ago, the island has both hard and soft corals, with boulders forming walls and caves descending to the sandy sea floor.

It’s thought that Cook Island, Julian Rocks near Byron Bay and the Solitary Islands further south, are a kind of ‘stepping stone’ pathway for tropical marine species moving up and down along the coastline.

Arguably the stars of the show are the resident green sea turtles, ever-present in and around the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve and best encountered on an organised snorkelling tour out from Fingal Head, with sightings possible all year around.

Temperate, subtropical and tropical species of fish, crustaceans and molluscs are also abundant in the complex rocky reefs of Cook Island, which also accommodates nesting seabirds, seeking a calm place to birth and raise their young.

As a safe harbour, Cook Island and its surrounding reserve provide habitat and resource for countless marine animals, including pufferfish and clownfish (hi Nemo!), as well as nudibranchs, stingrays, wobbegongs and even leopard sharks over summer.

Several threatened or protected species are also found in the reserve, including the giant Queensland grouper, black rockcod, gold spotted rockcod and the grey nurse shark.

Cook Island is a popular base for aquatic tours, with snorkelling trips available to explore the island’s marine life, along with scuba diving, boating, snorkelling and whale watching in season (fishing is not permitted within the reserve). Cook Island itself is a nature reserve with recreational use not permitted.

Neighbouring Casuarina, named for the wispy sheoak trees that fringe the beachfront, is a quiet local enclave that welcomes holiday-makers to enjoy its casual ambience and quality cuisine from coffee and pastries to hip Mexican drinks and dishes and mouth-watering Greek flavours.

ASK A LOCAL Laura Proctor, General Manager — Halcyon House I moved from Brisbane to the Tweed nearly eight years ago with my family after my husband relocated here for work. I noticed construction at what is now Halcyon House and was intrigued as to what was happening. A few years later I commenced at the hotel working closely with former General Manager Mauro de Riso who has been a huge influence on where I am today.

The Tweed has come a long way in the short time I have been here. I enjoy riding to Hastings Point and Kingscliff with my family, exploring the local waterfalls including Minyon Falls and Killen Falls, and spending time on the Tweed River. The Tweed is so diverse and offers unlimited opportunity for exploring. There is always something to do here!

EXPLORE: I recently had lunch at Tweed River House in Murwillumbah. What an amazing experience that was, meeting the owners and hearing about the building’s history was a true insight.

SIP: One can never go past a cocktail in the afternoon on the grass at Husk Distillers soaking in the gorgeous surroundings.

EAT: Rather biased, but I adore Jason Barratt’s Wagyu and Rosemary Skewers with a glass of Halcyon Days Nero d’Avolo at Paper Daisy.

DO: Currently my Sunday morning is spent at Nippers on Cabarita Beach with the family. We love the beach and enjoy the community here. Following that we usually have lunch somewhere local and then catch up with friends and family.

ASK A LOCAL LEE EYRE, Owner — The Oyster Shed & Catch-a-Crab For more than 30 years, Lee and Rob Eyre, together with son Matt, have owned and operated the iconic Catch-a-Crab river tour, a favourite with families and groups, and also for international visitors, until COVID-19 hit in 2020 and forced the family to rethink everything. Harnessing their oyster farms on the Tweed River, Lee and family set about re-inventing their boatshed space to emerge as a rustic and welcoming seafood mecca, The Oyster Shed, overlooking Terranora Lakes, just 100 metres from their oyster lease.

Serving their own Sydney Rock Oysters, local fresh seafood as well as cold beer, hand-picked wines and tropical cocktails, Lee and family call this their ‘salty’ version of a paddock-to-plate Tweed food experience.

Explore: Cove at Cabarita Beach has been a favourite for a long time, and the nearby headland is perfect for whale-watching during winter, too.

Sip: With a menu of margaritas, mojitos and martinis right by the beautiful Tweed River... why — The Oyster Shed of course! (seriously!) Also love Cudgen’s Earth Brewery for a cold beer ­— or two.

Eat: I go back to Potager Kitchen Garden at Carool time and time again. Small and special, it’s my favourite dining space with an ever-changing menu of seasonal local produce.

Shop: I could get lost at Bowerbird Emporium in Murwillumbah — unique, eclectic, beautiful homewares and gifts.

Do: Pick a beach (any beach!) for a long, relaxed walk, followed by lunch or coffee at a Kingscliff cafe — try Choux Box!

Tweed Heads

THE REGION’S NAMESAKE IS AN IDEAL COMBINATION OF FISHING AND RIVER CRUISING, WORLD-FAMOUS WAVES AND AN EVOLVING CAFE CULTURE.

Duranbah Beach may be less than 200 metres in length, but the break-wall of the Tweed River at the southern end forms a nice right-hand wave, loved by surfers from all over. If you’re staying out of the water, head to Point Danger, a natural amphitheatre that invites holiday-goers to take in sweeping vistas.

Heading in from the coast, the stunning Tweed River plays host to peaceful cruise tour opportunities, or you can hire a boat to track

your own river path. Throw in a line for bream, flathead or jewfish (note there is a recreational fishing fee in NSW).

Tweed Heads sits on the northern border of New South Wales and is often referred to as Twin Towns with Coolangatta (on the Queensland side). There’s a choice of shopping from boutique to national clothing brands and a constantly evolving cafe and dining scene, serving up barista coffee and food both fresh and delicious.

Tumbulgum

ROLLING OFF THE TONGUE AS TUMBULGUM, THIS TWEED RIVER TOWN IS SIMPLY GORGEOUS.

Arching around the shoulders of the river, Tumbulgum is where the Tweed and Rous Rivers intersect, and is said to take its name from a local indigenous word for ‘meeting of the waters’.

Tumbulgum has a tucked-away, timeless ambience, set back quietly from the main road and opening up to surprise first-time visitors with its picturesque setting. Try the ready bustle of cafe fare or heritage pub vibe at the local tavern.

Jump on board a cruise to really take in the grandeur and beauty of the river system, spot myriad birdlife and see Wollumbin Mount Warning from a new vantage point. For the more active, hire a SUP or kayak to navigate these ancient waters.

Visitors to Tumbulgum can take things at their own pace, with a simple picnic and spot of fishing or a gin and rum distillery tour at the stunning Husk Distillers, home to the famous and tasty Ink Gin, creating a holiday vibe that’s just perfect for the moment.

After meeting in Mexico and moving together to Burringbar, the couple were unable to find ‘a tortilla that tasted like a tortilla’ so began making their own from scratch, reimagining the flavours of Jefte’s childhood from Australia’s first solar-powered tortilleria.

Doña Cholita (named after Jefte’s grandmother) products are now found in stores all over Australia, still made in the same small-batch way in Murwillumbah with 100% natural and organic ingredients. Each Friday, the flavours of Mexico come to life out of Mercado Juarez, with a menu of take-away tacos, tortillas, quesadillas and nachos, enjoyed in the local park with chilled live tunes, fairy lights and fun for the whole family.

ASK A LOCAL ERIKA TAYLOR, Tweed Regional Museum Erika Taylor grew up on the Northern Rivers but her career in curation has taken her to some of the largest history and science museums in Australia. Returning home in 2012, she continued her passion for museums by joining the Tweed Regional Museum, playing an integral part in its transformation over the past decade.

Erika has curated many history and science exhibitions for the Museum, including the recent award-winning projects Land|Life|Culture and Small Town Queer.

Explore: We’re surrounded by ancient history in the Tweed — evidence of the volcano that was alive with lava 23 million years ago can be found all over the Shire. One of my favourites is the basalt columns at the Giant’s Causeway at Fingal Head, caused by cooling lava such a long time ago. The Aboriginal cultural significance of that area makes it one of the most special places on earth.

Sip: My secret sip tip is to try the old school milkshakes at the Austral Café. I also love Keith in Murwillumbah for coffee and they stock a unique range of organic wine, shrubs and alcoholic kombucha.

Eat: Mercado Juarez in Burringbar for community vibes on a Friday night. A local secret is Pita Line in Murwillumbah ­— it’s a commercial bakery but every lunch time they sell a handful of fresh, delicious pitas covered in za’atar on a table outside the bakery.

Shop: I’m naturally a sucker for old things and Heath’s Old Wares in Burringbar is an absolute treasure trove you can get stuck in for hours. I love a bit of midcentury modern and adore Roost and Kush interiors in Murwillumbah.

Do: My husband and I love creating our own foodie day tours of the area — the Tweed is packed with a huge number of really unique food and drink producers.

ASK A LOCAL RHETT BRAMBLEBY, Marine Discovery Centre Hastings Point has always been significant for me. My earliest memories are exploring the rocky shore, beaches and mangroves with my Dad and siblings. My father, Ted, would bring us here for holidays. Years later I moved here with my partner and two daughters and we found a little place at Burringbar. After working as an aged care nurse I joined Dad, who was running a coastal education centre with biology camps for schools. I now run my own business called Wild n Awake and work with the North Star Holiday Resort team to develop and run nature-based learning and adventure programs in their Marine Discovery Centre.

Explore: When not exploring ecosystems at Hastings Point I take off into the mountains and rainforests to the west. The Border Ranges NP is a favourite. The views from places like The Pinnacle or The Blackbutts lookouts are magnificent.

Sip: I’d have to say coffee. Sometimes a large coffee in the morning can last all day if I sip it.

Eat: One of our favourite dinners at home is getting fresh, warm pocket bread from the Lebanese bakery in Murwillumbah and adding home-made tabouleh, fried falafel, local hommus, yoghurt and jalapenos — delicious. I also love the food at Izakaya Potts Japanese restaurant at Pottsville – beer on tap too!

Shop: I always like a wander through the markets in the area. The Uki Buttery and Bazaar, every third Sunday, has an interesting selection of stalls and talented local musicians. The Murwillumbah Farmers Market every Wednesday morning is a great way to select fresh food grown in this region.

Do: One of my other passions is music and songwriting. I’m in an originals band and we play around the area and sometimes at local markets — so look out for us, ‘Wall of Love’.

Our salt waters are teeming with marine life, from green and loggerhead turtles, dolphins and whales in season, along with countless fish species, nudibranchs, rays, eels and octopus. Many of these call the small volcanic outcrop of Cook Island home, just off Fingal Head and declared an Aquatic Reserve in 1998.

The mighty Tweed River flows from the valley to the sea and winds through the hinterland. Cruising the river is a scenic way to take in new views and learn more about this powerful waterway.

HOME TO THE MAJESTIC WOLLUMBIN MOUNT WARNING AND COMPRISING THE GONDWANA RAINFORESTS OF AUSTRALIA — THE MOST EXTENSIVE SUBTROPICAL RAINFOREST IN THE WORLD WITH ANCIENT PLANTS AND ANIMALS FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME — THE TWEED IS NATURALLY A PLACE FOR IMMERSING IN GREEN FORESTS AND FRESH AIR.

Read on to learn more about some of the area’s must-visit national parks, whether for a hike, a picnic, birdwatching, camping or cooling off in lakes or rock pools.

WO L LU M B I N N AT I O N A L PA R K

Home to the distinctive Wollumbin Mount Warning, a remnant central vent of an ancient volcano, Wollumbin National Park is a place of great sacred significance to the Bundjalung indigenous people. Said to mean ‘cloud catcher’ in local indigenous language, the peak of Wollumbin rises to a towering height of 1,157m above sea level and is a much-loved landmark by photographers and artists Note: A closure of the Wollumbin Summit track is in place at the time of publication until the end of March 2022 (minimum). This is due to COVID-19 social distancing requirements, subsequent public safety risks, and to allow consultation with the Aboriginal community and other key stakeholders regarding the future management of this site. The impressive peak of Wollumbin Mt Warning can be viewed from all across the Tweed region. We recommend researching and finding vantage points on Duranbah Rd (opposite Tropical Fruit World), at Crams Farm (part of Clarrie Hall Dam), or at the Pinnacles Lookout in the Border Ranges NP.

At the southern rim of the one-time volcano, in these parks you’ll find nightcap oak trees and towering kauri, bunya and hoop pines, along with endangered animals, including Albert’s lyrebird and Fleay’s barred frog. Eight tracks, from 1.4km to 32km, can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. Keep an eye out for goannas, kookaburras, brushtail possums, spotted-tailed quoll and koalas.

Our tips • Camp out under stars in an ancient forest at Rummery Park campground • Walk to Minyon Falls and drink in the beautiful view!

• Take on the 18km Historic Nightcap Walking Track over a day or two BORDER RANGES N AT I O N A L PA R K

World Heritage-listed Border Ranges National Park is a large area of wilderness that protects untouched rainforest and unique plants and animals connected to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana, including stands of Antarctic beech forests dating back 2,000 years. There are waterfalls, stunning lookouts and 10 walking tracks, ranging from 200m to 10.5km. Note that unsealed roads are prevalent in this area.

Our tips • For a short walk try the Palm Forest track through subtropical rainforest • Up for more? Try the more difficult Booyong Walk from Sheepstation Creek campground • Pinnacle Lookout’s views of Wollumbin Mount Warning and the spectacular volcanic crater escarpment are a must-see

Eucalypt trees, old growth forest, ancient figs and subtropical rainforest provide a safe haven here for large owls, the giant barred frog, lace monitor lizards, glossy black cockatoos and red-legged pademelons. A vital habitat link between the Wollumbin and Border Ranges National Parks, the Park is popular with hikers and twitchers.

Our tips • Pitch a tent and sleep a night or two in the forest at Cutters Camp • Explore the Byrrill Creek Walking Track, a 900m return stroll through subtropical rainforest and fig trees C U D G E N N AT U R E R E S E RV E

Close to Cabarita Beach, this is a tranquil space for bird-spotting and relaxed picnics. It also encompasses Cudgen Lake, a hidden wetland surrounded by floodplain forests, making it a mecca for water-lovers with fishing, paddling, swimming, SUPing and sailing.

There’s a lot to see in the Tweed and to make sure you don’t miss a thing, why not plan ahead to map out your journey along a trail of choice, from coast to countryside landscapes and ranging from drive trails to hiking, biking and even paddle trails.

For an immersive getaway exploring our valley life, jump online to the interactive Tweed Hinterland Gems experience. You’ll find suggested drive trails to navigate our vibrant foodie, arts, heritage and nature offerings and be invited to unlock a host of hidden gems from unique offers to insider knowledge shared by locals.

Dive deeper into the Tweed’s vast green caldera with a drive itinerary along The Rainforest Way. Look up the Tweed Range Scenic Drive and be guided along an itinerary to discover ancient rainforest and panoramic views from atop the towering rim of a onetime volcano.

If getting out in the fresh air to take a trail is more your thing, there’s much in store, from tracks throughout the Border Ranges National Park, incorporating day walks and campsites for overnight hikes, to exciting future trail plans that are currently in development.

There will be an enhanced multi-day walking track route connecting the Tweed and Byron hinterland trails, as well as a Northern Rivers Rail Trail that will create a 130km long trail for hikers, bikers and runners from the Byron hinterland through to Murwillumbah, along the old North Coast railway line.

While exploring the valley, be sure to call in and have a chat with our friendly volunteers at the Murwillumbah Visitor Information Centre, also home to the spectacular 16-metre-long artwork known as The Green Cauldron Panorama.

Surrounding the viewer to evoke a 360 degree birds-eye view, this remarkable work of art was completed in 2012

by Caldera Wildscapes, a collective of creatives, led by principal artist Andy Reimanis, who all had a hand in creating this geographically true painting that captures the vastness of the caldera as well as the smaller details, such as the various birdlife species native to the Tweed.

ASK A LOCAL DOROTHY TOLLETT & JANIS BANKS, Volunteers — Kingscliff Visitor Information Centre Many holiday-makers will find their way during a stay to one of the Tweed’s Visitor Information Centres, found in Tweed Heads, Kingscliff and Murwillumbah, to get local tips on what to see and do.

Our passionate team of volunteers are your local holiday experts and, for many of them, the experience of learning more about where they live and sharing this with visitors is a pure joy. Lots of friendships have also been forged through volunteering at the info centres, such as the connection between Dorothy Tollett and Janis Banks, who share a shift at the Kingy VIC. DT I joined the Kingscliff Visitor Information Centre as a Volunteer about four years ago, drawn by giving back to the community and sharing my knowledge and experiences with others. JB I’m semi-retired and moved to the Tweed nine years ago, from across the border at Broadbeach, and also volunteer my time with Friends of the Pound, helping to find cats and dogs their forever home.

Explore: DT I love the drive to Tyalgum and a visit to Flutterbies Cottage Café for sumptuous scones and tea.

JB For a day out, I’ll sometimes take a drive to nearby Mullumbimby’s Crystal Castle — it’s always enchanting and spiritual.

Sip & Eat: DT The Oyster Shed for lunch or dinner on Friday or Saturday is a must, with views over the Tweed River (be sure to book!), as well as Tweed Valley Farmhouse Cheeses in Burringbar, to taste cheese, sip champagne and learn how each different cheese is made. JB Tweed Valley Whey Farmhouse Cheeses is top of my list too, for refreshments and time with family and friends. Right near our Kingscliff Info Centre by the beach, Zinc is a convenient pop-up that serves great coffee and wonderful treats. I also like to grab fresh sushi and find a relaxing Tweed River-side spot on the grass.

Do: DT My favourite way to start each day (at 6am) is taking my dog for a walk with my friend Carol and her two pooches.

We trek the hills and enjoy the views and fresh air, and the pooches love the freedom to run freely in off-leash areas.

JB Depending on the weather, I also love to be outdoors — gazing at the wonderful ocean with tons of fresh air all around, cycling or strolling. Otherwise, Kingscliff Cinema or Hoyts Tweed always have a good flick between them!
