Our work to advance the creation of Piers Park III has only accelerated since we last met. Over the last year, we have made great strides on the park design, doubled community outreach capacity, and advanced our fundraising thanks to federal, state, and local officials; business leaders; and philanthropists. In the coming months, we will continue to partner with community members, elected leaders, companies, and individuals like you to get us over the finish line and break ground in 2023.

OPPORTUNITIES

Through planning, feasibility studies, and deep collaboration with City, State, and private stakeholders, we have identified prospective sites along the harborfronts of the North End/ Downtown, Fort Point Channel, and the South Boston Waterfront—and are wrapping up a community design phase for our first site, Piers Park III in East Boston, and entering the pre-construction phase in 2023.

The Piers Park III project represents an important opportunity to build a spectacular, welcoming public park along the East Boston Waterfront. Today, the Piers Park III parcel sits on an abandoned pier adjacent to Piers Park—which opened to the public in 1995—and Piers Park II, being developed by Massport. Celebrating and complementing existing and planned parks, the design for Piers Park III will take full advantage of its unique East Boston location. The park design has been in an iterative process with the community and the landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburg Associates, Inc. since early 2021, so that we may deliver a space that addresses community needs. IMPACTLASTING

As part of the community design process, surveys have collected feedback on what features should be included in the park—as well as what events and programs should be hosted in the space, once complete. A design survey garnered over 1,000 responses in English and Spanish, and a programming survey continues to collect ideas about future events. Feedback has also been gathered throughout two summer seasons (2021 & 2022) of free, family-friendly programming hosted in Piers Park I alongside community partners—including free sailing, family festivals, and guided bike rides on the Greenway! Through this intentional outreach and engagement process, the future programming at Piers Park III will include a wide variety of active and passive engagement options, and self-guided as well as more formal events and programs.

• Community Creating diverse, community-driven events and programming that are culturally relevant, contributing to the fabric of the community.

• Equity Centering equity in each phase of park development, construction, programming, and operations. Nature and culture can soothe the soul and improve lives. Not just for some. But for everyone. Forever.

• Health and well-being Providing quality opportunities to invite the next generation outside, promoting active lifestyles for youth that can become lifelong, healthy habits.

Each prospective program will be informed through feedback from the community and community health partners and constructed through the lens of Trustees principles of diversity, belonging, equity, and inclusion, including:

• Resilience for a changing climate Integrating educational programming and signage throughout the park about climate change, natural solutions, and other opportunities for adaptation.

PIERS PARK III A meaningful

“East Boston has a wonderful group of elected officials in City Hall and on Beacon Hill fighting every day for our friends and neighbors in this beautiful neighborhood,” said Trustees President and CEO John

For far too long, Eastie has shouldered a disproportionate share of pollution and the impact of climate change. This park is an important step toward righting this wrong. This park is a meaningful example of providing environmental justice to a community that has been short-changed for too long.”

The effort to secure the $2MM in Congressional Directed Spending (CDS) federal funding was led by Senator Warren and Senator Markey. The Senators were joined in their support by Congresswoman Pressley, and the award was included in the bipartisan omnibus federal budget signed by President Joseph R. Biden.

“It’s important to fund Yosemite, and Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon, but it’s also important that we have urban parks for families who live here so that they can enjoy God’s great gifts, so that they can appreciate nature just as well as those who live near those great national parks,” said Senator Markey. “Upon completion Piers Park I, II and III will be nearly 15 acres—right here, in the heart of East Boston, available for every family, and for every child to enjoy.”

A total of $50MM is being raised for construction and ongoing operations of Piers Park III, funded largely through philanthropic contributions from a mix of private individuals, foundations, and corporations. To date, $28.7MM has been committed to build Piers Park III.

“After several decades and billions of dollars Boston Harbor has been transformed from one of the dirtiest harbors in the country to one of the cleanest,” said Senator Warren.

“And while there is still work to be done, the harbor is now a safe and beautiful destination for everyone in the Commonwealth. But let’s be clear: Accessing the harbor is still challenging for many of Boston’s residents. That’s particularly true for the people who live right here in this East Boston community.

When complete, the Piers Park complex will also provide more than a mile of accessible waterfront trails for walking or jogging. A community design process remains ongoing, with the second design released for public comment in February after incorporating community feedback gathered throughout 2021.

“East Boston has a long, proud history of charting the course for Boston’s future,” said Mayor Wu. “Its ports were first to welcome many immigrants who came to call our city home. Bringing their hopes, dreams, and families to set the foundation for all of us here today. They brought a vision for a better life. Many of those immigrants would go on to become shipbuilders, making some of the fastest vessels in the world, in the very ports where they first landed, buoying an industry that drove our city’s growth. Today’s investment will help build on their legacy.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren addressed the crowd, and later tweeted “We fought hard to secure funding for this project and look forward to seeing the park fluorish for our community!”

“It’s not often that you get to, in real time, in a powerful and tangible way, to see the impact of your advocacy and that’s why this community project funding has been so extraordinary,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “This process is the best demonstration of the most ideal collaboration. That is: Projects that are community-driven, government endorsed and invested in.”

Working with landscape architecture firm Michael Van Valkenburg Associates, Inc., The Trustees will share a third design with the public for review and comment later this year. Groundbreaking on the park is scheduled for mid-2023.

The Waterfront Ambassadors did a great job with community engagement this summer, including hosting a Youth Walking Tour in Piers Park. During the interactive walking tour, our Ambassadors shared information about the future Piers Park III, hosted games with prizes, and offered free kayaking.

SURGE, a Boston Dance Theater performance featuring three East Boston-based creators, was hosted in Piers Park this July. Under a Coastal Community residency supported by The Boston Foundation in partnership with The Trustees, Jenny Oliver, Veronica Robles, and Maria Servellón took part in the performance to share stories about local climate events and moments of resilience through movement and the spoken word. A final performance of SURGE will be hosted at The Trustees’ deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, on Sunday, September 25 at 4PM.

1 A variety of free, family-friendly programming was hosted by The Trustees Boston Waterfront Initiative this summer, including “Wheels on the Greenway!” Supported by presenting sponsor Converse, participants were invited to ride along the Greenway with The Friends of Mary Ellen Welch Greenway and the Boston Waterfront Initiative.

This year, the Waterfront Ambassador summer youth employment program welcomed 11 teens from Boston neighborhoods, including East Boston, Chelsea, Roslindale, South Boston, and Dorchester. Throughout the summer, the teens learned about waterfront issues in and around their communities and worked with other local organizations. Now in its third year of operating in East Boston, the Waterfront Ambassadors program also welcomed back two alums into leadership roles for the summer.

Celebrating food, culture, and family at Piers Park, the events offered free treats, music, games, and creative crafts for the whole family, including free sailing, with support from TD Bank through TD Ready Commitment. The Trustees DBIE Roadmap provides an overarching vision for creating inclusive spaces of belonging for Trustees staff, members, volunteers, and communities across our organization and 123 properties. The Piers Park III project and process seeks to include elements of the overall Trustees DBIE vision throughout, starting with an inclusive community design process, through to procurement and contracting for park construction as well as vendors and programming when the park opens. The Trustees is committed to creating a space where everyone feels welcome and that they belong.

Founded in 1891, The Trustees is Massachusetts’ largest conservation and preservation organization. Located within a few minutes of every resident, our 123 properties span 27,000 acres across the state—from working farms, landscaped and urban gardens, and community parks, to barrier beaches, forests, campgrounds, inns, museums, and historic sites—and include 75 miles of coastline, 350 miles of hiking trails, and eleven historic homesteads. In addition to our properties, we are also an active leader in land conservation. We hold conservation restrictions on more than 20,000 acres, including 45 miles of coastline, and have worked with community partners to help protect another 25,000 acres across the state.
