Dr. Feese said this is a ceremonial piece that was written for some important function rather than for a religious service. The choir will also sing a few other selections during the assembly. Two other choral groups will par ticipate in the program. The Women’s Glee Club organized a few years ago will be directed by Mr. Nels Leonard. They will sing two brief songs from a group of six written by Paul Hindermith a contemporary German composer who taught at Yale and since the war has been teaching in Switzerland.
Being thankful is simply being appreciative, of course, and no person with any spiritual development fails to appreciate what others have done and are doing for him. God the Creator deserves our thanks because He has given mankind the materials out of which we can create a veritable heaven on earth if we wish. It is not God’s fault that man has set barriers between himself and his neighbors and even threatens the existence of the human species by misuse of the fruits of in telligence. Stevenson’s lines, “The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings’’ were meant to reflect a childish conception of the happiness of kings. But even more important was Stevenson’s reminder that beauty, friendship, work, affection, challenge, nobility, creativity, achievement are part of the normal human pattern. We at West Liberty State College should be especially thank ful this November that we have full opportunity to exercise those powers that are uniquely human. We can think and we can love. To do both is to honor the God who created us and to render Him thanks befitting His blessings. —President Elbin
