IMPACT OF OBAN DEAL BEING KEPT SECRET
By AVA TURNQUEST Tribune Chief Reporter aturnquest@tribunemedia.net
THE environmental impact assessment for the controversial Oban Energies project will not likely be made public until a new heads of agreement is inked, Labour Minister Dion Foulkes said yesterday. Despite this, Mr Foulkes, who co-chairs the Cabinet subcommittee spearheading the Oban review and renegotiations, insisted the government was committed to ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the process. Mr Foulkes confirmed the government’s negotiating team was set to meet with Oban principals on January 7. “We are in receipt of the complete EIA for the project,” he said. SEE PAGE SIX

TOURISTS WARNED TO AVOID FISH FRY By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net
A MAJOR cruise line yesterday “blindsided” a Cabinet minister by warning its passengers that the Arawak Cay Fish Fry was a “particular area of concern” for crime. Royal Caribbean captain Srecko Ban, in a letter to Anthem of the Seas passengers that was dated yesterday, wrote: “We feel
it is important to make our guests aware that Nassau has been experiencing an increase in crime. Non-violent crimes, such as theft of personal items, are the most common types of crimes being committed.” Dionisio D’Aguilar, minister of tourism and aviation, told Tribune Business that The Bahamas probably needs to create “a working group forum” to address the cruise industry’s crime concerns.
Captain Ban, who conceded that “thousands routinely travel to Nassau without incident” wrote: “We recommend guests not venture too far from tourist areas and consider ... an organised tour. Particular areas of concern include the Sand Trap, the Fish Fry and other areas of Nassau referred to as ‘Over-theHill’ by locals, which should be avoided after sunset.”
