Carnival to stay shut after govt persuaded of COVID spread risk By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net THE government has again denied a request from operators of the Christmas Carnival, citing the fastspreading omicron variant of COVID-19 and a need to mitigate risks from the virus as children prepare for face-to-face learning next month. During a hastily arranged press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday, press secretary Clint Watson read a statement from Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis on the matter. He said: “Earlier today, my government made the decision not to allow

the carnival to proceed this year. We fully understand this will come as a disappointment to carnivalgoers, to the vendors, to those who were looking forward to the jobs they had secured with the carnival, and to the carnival organisers themselves. “Everyone should know this decision was taken with great care and after comprehensive consideration. There have been multiple developments in recent days involving omicron, the new, more transmissible variant of COVID, which made it clear we could not proceed with carnival safely.” SEE PAGE FOUR

INSURERS FIGHTING TO HOLD DOWN PREMIUMS

PINTARD LOOKS TO EXPAND NUMBERS AT CONFERENCE By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net FREE National Movement leader Michael Pintard says he hopes the party agrees to increase its number of voting delegates at the next convention. In 2019, the Progressive Liberal Party amended its constitution to significantly increase the number of delegates that could participate and vote in its national conventions. With the change, the number of people who could vote from each

constituency grew from ten to 20. The party also agreed to appoint five convention delegates for every affiliate group. Fewer people are eligible to vote in the FNM’s convention. During a press conference this week, Mr Pintard said: “The closer we get to the convention we’ll give you some more details, we’ll signal what will happen, but certainly that’s one of the things I’m hopeful that the convention will agree to. GENTILE HIT WITH WINDING UP ORDER By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net

THE Securities Commission’s intervention to “nip in the bud” conduct by a Bahamian broker/dealer once used as FBI “bait” was yesterday vindicated by a Supreme Court judge. Justice Diane Stewart ordered that Mintbroker International, the former Swiss America Securities, which was owned and

GUY GENTILE managed by its colourful principal, Guy Gentile,

be wound-up under the Supreme Court’s supervision with the EY (Ernst & Young) accounting firm appointed as official liquidators. Some may view the ruling as too late, given that Mr Gentile closed his Bahamas operations almost two years ago and exited this jurisdiction for Puerto Rico after purportedly returning all client assets to their owners.
