Ratings agency S&P sees economic upturn but private sector cautious By NEIL HARTNELL Tribune Business Editor nhartnell@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas does “not have enough control over our own plight” to take comfort from Standard & Poor’s (S&P) belief that COVID devastation has “bottomed out”, it was argued yesterday. Matt Aubry, the Organisation for Responsible Governance’s (ORG) executive director, told Tribune Business this nation was “still too far off” from full recovery to take confidence from the credit rating agency’s decision to

upgrade this nation’s economic outlook to “stable”. That action provided the one positive for The Bahamas amid S&P’s decision to further push this nation into “junk” status territory, as it downgraded the country’s sovereign creditworthiness from ‘BBB-’ to ‘B+’. The “stable” outlook, based on the country’s economic recovery prospects, indicates the rating agency will take no further downgrade action over the next 12 months.

THE US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention will reclassify the COVID-19 threat in The Bahamas from a Level Four: Do Not Travel advisory to a Level Three warning, Chief Medical Officer Dr Pearl McMillan said on Friday. Dr McMillan said she received the notification about the impending change from the Caribbean Public Health Agency, as local officials work closely with the agency regarding the CDC’s travel health
advisories. “As we all know we would have been at a Level Four,” Dr McMillan said. “The notification, actually it was a congratulatory notification, to say that we have been downgraded to a three based on the data recently submitted. “We have to continue to do what we’re doing as a country. So that we can continue either move down that ladder but definitely not go back up to a four.” Asked if the impending advisory change was based mainly on vaccinations or cases going down, Dr McMillan said: “They have SEE PAGE FOUR

ALTHOUGH Junkanoo parades will not be held again this year, chairman of the Junkanoo Corporation of New Providence Dion Miller said officials still plan to celebrate the festival through several planned activities, including a potential in-person event. In an interview with The Tribune yesterday, Mr
Miller said the group is now in its final stages of planning and hopes to make an announcement soon on how they plan to commemorate the festival.
He also confirmed that all the major Junkanoo groups will be participating in this year’s festivities. “There won’t be any traditional Junkanoo parades this year, but there will be a virtual feature presentation,” Mr Miller said. “We’re currently working on a virtual feature presentation which will include the majority of the Junkanoo groups so it will be a nice Junkanoo feature film and SEE PAGE THREE
