Gabriela, 13, represents ‘242’ in FEI Dressage

‘VJ’ and 76ers get 102-100 win over Celtics

BAHAMAS Equestrian sport has moved beyond the Jumping ring and into the Dressage arena, as 13-year-old Gabriela Souza-Cordovez became the first athlete to represent The Bahamas in FEI Dressage.  Souza-Cordovez did it in style, winning individual bronze in the Children’s Division and team gold in the mixed teams at the CDI-W Mexico 2025 at Rancho St. Vincent, Mexico.

The competition was part of the Borrowed Horses Project, an FEI education initiative allowing children (12-14 years) and juniors (14-18 years) to compete on borrowed horses.

The CDI-W Mexico 2025 marked the first time the event has been held in the Americas as a part of a

CDI-W (Dressage World Cup Qualifier) competition.

Souza-Cordovez rode Gitano, a 13-year-old Mexican sport horse gelding owned by Mercedes Urquiza Pardo of Mexico, and was coached by Jessica McTaggart of Grand Cayman.

The pair scored 67.143% in the CDICh Children

Preliminary B – Borrowed Horse Test and 65.350% in the CDICh Children Team –Borrowed Horse Test.

The combined scores earned Gabriela an individual bronze, behind Mercedes Urquiza Pardo/Alma of Mexico and Paloma Herrera Iglesias/Cool Time LS Elite of Costa Rica.

Souza-Cordovez was also a member of the gold medal-winning mixed team, along with Renata Herdoiza (Ecuador), Jaimie Fletcher (Trinidad and Tobago) and Bennet McWhorter (USA).

Teams were mixed to include riders from different countries and from the Children and Junior categories.

Equestrian Bahamas president Cathy Ramsingh-Pierre congratulated Gabriela on her strong performance.

“Competing at this level on a borrowed horse is not easy," Ramsingh-Pierre said. "Gaby showed grit and grace in her performances. We are very, very proud of her achievement.”

Ramsingh-Pierre also expressed appreciation to the competition organising committee and spoke of the implications for Bahamas equestrian development.

"Hopefully these types of FEI-sanctioned borrowed horse initiatives continue as they are crucial to the development of our riders and the overall growth of the sport in the region.”

All tests were judged by a panel of three judges: Isobel Wessels of Great Britain, Frederico Pinteus of Portugal, and Marian E. Cunningham of Peru.

Chess Federation introduces chess in schools across The Bahamas

THE Bahamas Chess Federation (BCF) is making bold strides toward transforming classrooms and young minds across the country.

On October 6, the BCF officially launched its national Smart Moves Programme, an innovative scholastic initiative designed to introduce structured chess instruction into schools and inspire a new generation of thinkers, leaders and problem-solvers.

The initiative comes just ahead of the joint global commitment announced by FIDE and the International School Chess Federation, declaring 2026 the Year of Chess in Education, a worldwide movement to integrate chess into classrooms.

Now in week five of its first eight-week pilot, Smart Moves is already making a powerful impact in schools across The Bahamas. With the support of partners including The Gift of Chess, Bahamas Power and Light (BPL), The Pelagic Group, RDC Partners, Kanoo Innovation Hub, HAZMAC Pharmaceuticals and Medical Supplies, Little Island Hotels, and FIDE, Smart Moves is shaping the minds that will

shape The Bahamas. “We have also begun receiving donations from schools like Advantage Learning Academy, currently enrolled in the programme, to say thank you for the positive impact the programme is having on their students.

“The energy has been incredible, students are rushing into sessions with excitement, schools are requesting additional sessions, and children are even joining extra online lessons on Sunday evenings. This programme is being embraced with passion, and that’s a strong sign that Smart Moves is not just timely, but necessary for our nation,” said BCF president Curtis Pride Senior.

About Smart Moves Smart Moves is a pioneering scholastic chess development programme that serves as a cornerstone for building a strong and sustainable junior chess pathway across The Bahamas. Through a structured curriculum and delivery by certified instructors, students gain access to engaging chess education designed to strengthen academic performance, confidence, discipline and decision-making skills.

PHILADELPHIA (AP)

— Tyrese Maxey scored 21 points and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored the go-ahead basket on a follow with 8.7 seconds left to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 102-100 win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

Justin Edwards had a teamhigh 22 points for the 76ers, who played without Joel Embiid (right knee soreness).

Edwards made 8 of 9 shots, including 5 of 6 on 3-pointers.

Jaylen Brown scored 24 points to pace the Celtics.

Rookie Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe Jr contributed six points, three assists and three rebounds.

Boston led by eight points with just over six minutes to play before Edwards hit three consecutive 3-pointers in a span of 1:18 to put Philadelphia in front 93-92.

Brown tied it at 100 by making the second of two free throws with 33.5 seconds left.

After Edwards misfired on a 3-pointer, his only miss of the night, Oubre collected the

rebound and laid it in with 8.7 seconds left for a 102-100 lead. On Boston’s ensuing possession, Andre Drummond knocked the ball out of Derrick White’s hands, and White was forced to heave a shot from near midcourt. The ball didn’t touch the rim but fell in the hands of Neemias Queta, who was unable to score.

Embiid has missed five of the team’s 11 contests this season. The 2023 MVP is averaging 19.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He was sidelined in the previous four games while recovering from left knee surgery. The right knee soreness is new.

Philadelphia coach Nick Nurse said after the game that tests revealed no structural issues with Embiid's knee and that he was day-to-day. This was the third of four meetings between the clubs this season.

The 76ers won the season opener at Boston on October 22, and the Celtics won the first matchup in Philadelphia on October 31. They’ll next meet on March 1 in Boston.

Knicks stay undefeated at home with 133-120 win over Memphis

NEW YORK (AP)

— Jalen Brunson had 32 points and 10 assists, Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points and 13 rebounds, and the New York Knicks continued their sizzling offensive start under new coach Mike Brown by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 133-120 on Wednesday night to improve to 7-0 at home.

Mikal Bridges scored 22 for the Knicks, who have averaged 130.2 points during a five-game winning streak, all at home. They are off to their best start at Madison Square Garden since winning their first 10 in the 2012-13 season, when they won their last Atlantic Division title.

OG Anunoby had 16 points and Jordan Clarkson came off the bench for 13. The Knicks have scored at least 77 points in a half in three straight games.

Jaren Jackson Jr. and Santi Aldama each scored 19 points for the Grizzlies, who lost for the sixth time in seven games. Ja Morant had 16 points and 10 assists but shot 4 for 14. The Knicks closed the first quarter with a 12-0 run, turning a 30-all tie into a 42-30 advantage on Brunson’s basket with 0.5 seconds left. A 7-0 spurt to open the second extended it to 49-30 on Deuce McBride’s 3-pointer. Memphis got within 11 midway through the

quarter, but the Knicks kept pushing the ball and got 10 points from Clarkson in the period to extend the lead to 77-54 at halftime.

THUNDER 126, WARRIORS 102

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 28 points and 11 assists in three quarters, Chet Holmgren had a perfect shooting performance and league-leading Oklahoma City rolled past rival Golden State.

Holmgren had 23 points and 11 rebounds. He made all nine of his field goals, both of his 3-pointers and all three of his free throw attempts. Isaiah Joe scored 18 points and Ajay Mitchell

added 17 for the defending champion Thunder, who improved to 11-1. Jonathan Kuminga led the Warriors with 13 points. Stephen Curry, who missed the previous three games due to illness, had 11 points on 4-for-13 shooting. He struggled on defense too — he committed his fifth foul with just under 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

Thunder defensive stopper Lu Dort was out with a right upper trapezius strain, but they still had plenty of elite perimeter defenders to frustrate the Warriors. It was their second-lowest scoring effort of the season.

The Thunder improved to 5-0 at home this season

while Golden State fell to 1-6 on the road.

JAZZ 152, PACERS 128 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Lauri Markkanen scored 35 points, rookie Ace Bailey added 20 points and Utah scored the most points in an NBA game this season with a win over reeling Indiana. Bailey, the No. 5 pick in this summer’s draft, started the season slowly as he recovered from illness but had his full repertoire of dunks, midrange jumpers and 3-pointers on display in his second start. Svi Mykhailiuk had 20 points for the Jazz. The injury-ravaged Pacers, last season’s Eastern Conference champions,

fell to 1-10 and matched the 1988-89 team for the worst start in franchise history. Pascal Siakam, who had 27 points, and Aaron Nesmith, who scored 17, returned after missing Indiana’s last game.

Indiana’s T.J. McConnell played his first game of the season and scored 12 points but was limited to 11 minutes as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

NUGGETS 122, KINGS 108

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Nikola Jokic scored 35 points and had 15 rebounds, Jamal Murray added 23 points and Denver won its fifth game in a row, beating Sacramento.

The Kings were led by Domantas Sabonis, who finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Drew Eubanks added 19 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento, which has lost three straight.

The Kings led by one after the first quarter but the Nuggets took the lead for good with 1:45 left in the second. They Nuggets extended their lead to 101-86 during the fourth quarter, fueled by a 16-2 run.

Aaron Gordon scored 17 points for the Nuggets and Bruce Brown added 14 off the bench.

DeMar DeRozan scored 18 for Sacramento and Russell Westbrook had 14.

The Nuggets had a 48-35 rebounding advantage and shot 51% from the field.

RAPTORS 119, NETS 109

NEW YORK (AP) — Brandon Ingram scored 25 points to help Toronto beat Brooklyn. Immanuel Quickley had 24 points for Toronto, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Scottie Barnes finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Jakob Poetl had 12 points and 10 boards.

The Raptors won for the fifth time in six games. They shot 49.5% (45 for 91) from the field and outrebounded the Nets 50-36. Nic Claxton and Michael Porter Jr. each had 21 points for Brooklyn, losers of 10 of its first 11 games to start the season. The Nets are winless in six games at home.

Playing its third game of a five-game trip, Toronto led 60-52 at halftime and increased its lead to 14 points early in the third quarter.

Brooklyn closed to 83-81 late in the third, but Toronto responded with three consecutive baskets, including a buzzer-beating floater from Jamal Shead.

Jannik Sinner seals semifinal spot at ATP Finals with win over Alexander Zverev

TURIN, Italy (AP)

— Defending champion

Jannik Sinner sealed a semifinal spot at the ATP Finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alexander Zverev before his home fans yesterday.

Sinner extended his winning streak on indoor hard courts to 28 matches — stretching back to his loss to Novak Djokovic in the final of this event two years ago.

It was Sinner’s fifth straight victory over Zverev — a run that includes this year’s Australian Open final and recent meetings in Vienna and Paris.

The second-ranked Sinner still has a chance to finish the year at No. 1. But he needs to win the tournament and hope that Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t win another match.

Sinner leads the Bjorn Borg group with two wins, while Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime have one win each. Ben Shelton trails without a victory.

Alcaraz has also won his opening two matches and leads the Jimmy Connors group.

The top two finishers in each group advance to the semifinals.

Sinner hasn’t lost a set in this event since getting beat by Djokovic two years ago.

When he was challenged by Zverev, the Italian consistently raised his level.

Sinner saved two break points in the opening game of the match — both with aces. Then he battled back from 0-40 down to hold serve early in the second set. And by the end, Sinner had saved all seven of the break points that he faced. Zverev won the finals in 2018 and 2021.

Auger-Aliassime beats Shelton Eighth-seed Auger-Aliassime claimed his first win at this year’s finals by battling back to beat Shelton 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5. “He was playing much better than me at the start. It’s not often that I get broken twice in the first set indoors," Auger-Aliassime said. "It was a weird start, but as the match went on I was finding ways to put returns in the court.

"Once we engaged in the rallies, I felt like I could win more. You just have to fight, believe, and play the next point the right way.”

Shelton dominated the first set and got an early break but a terrible game from him, when he was serving for the set, saw Auger-Aliassime break back. Shelton, playing the finals for the first time,

showed his frustration by hitting his racket on the ground. It flew out of his hand and toward spectators. No one was hit, but he received a code violation

warning. The American recovered to break straight back and take the opening set. The second set went with serve and Shelton managed to save three set

points in the tiebreaker but a double fault — shortly after taking a tumble — saw Auger-Aliassime pull level. The Canadian never looked back and, although

Shelton managed to fend off two break points early in the decider, Auger-Aliassime broke him in the final game, sealing the victory on his third match point.

Pro Picks: Lions-Eagles, Chiefs-Broncos and Seahawks-Rams highlight week full of marquee matchups

WEEK 11 is filled with marquee matchups.

The Seattle Seahawks (7-2) and Los Angeles Rams (7-2) face off for first place in the NFC West.

The Broncos (8-2) take on the nine-time defending division champion Kansas City Chiefs (5-4) looking to prove the AFC West goes through Denver.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (7-2) and Detroit Lions (6-3) meet in prime time in a potential preview of the NFC title game. Pro Picks breaks them down.

PACKERS (5-3-1) at GIANTS (2-8)

Line: Packers minus 7

The Packers have lost two in a row. Jordan Love and the offense have struggled, scoring just 20 points combined in both games.

Interim coach Mike Kafka coaches his first game for the Giants, who fired Brian Daboll. Jameis Winston will start because Jaxson Dart is in the concussion protocol. Micah Parsons could have a big day chasing him around.

BEST BET:

PACKERS: 32-16

CHICAGO (6-3) at MIN-

NESOTA (4-5)

Line: Vikings minus 3 Caleb Williams has led the Bears to three comeback wins in the last four games and they’ve won six of seven since an 0-2 start under Ben Johnson. Williams is 1-7 in eight starts vs. NFC North teams, including a loss to Minnesota in Week 1. J.J. McCarthy led the Vikings to a comeback win at Chicago in Week 1. He struggled against Baltimore last week in his fourth career start after an impressive performance against Detroit.

UPSET SPECIAL:

BEARS: 23-22

NEW YORK JETS (2-7) at NEW ENGLAND (8-2)

Line: Patriots minus 13

The Jets have won two in a row, but they’re overmatched against the streaking Patriots, who’ve won seven straight games. Drake Maye is playing at an MVP level for New England. The Patriots have won 16 of their last 18 games against New York.

PATRIOTS: 26-14

WASHINGTON (3-7) at MIAMI (3-7) in Spain

Line: Dolphins minus 2 1/2

It’s a lost season for the Commanders after reaching the NFC title game last year. Marcus Mariota fills in for Jayden Daniels again. He’s lost seven straight starts as an underdog. The Dolphins are coming off an impressive rout over Buffalo. Favorites are 10-5 ATS in international games when both teams have losing records.

DOLPHINS: 24-20 HOUSTON (4-5) at TENNESSEE (1-8)

Line: Texans minus 6 1/2 Davis Mills saved Houston’s season by leading an improbable comeback when down 19 in the fourth quarter. He could start again if C.J. Stroud can’t return from a concussion. The Titans have been terrible. Cam Ward has thrown only five TD passes. But they’re coming off a bye, while Houston needed to stage a furious rally to win.

TEXANS: 20-14

LOS ANGELES

CHARGERS (7-3) at JACKSONVILLE (5-4)

Line: Chargers minus 3

The Chargers have won three straight, their defense was dominant last week and Justin Herbert withstood five sacks behind a depleted offensive line in a 15-point win against Pittsburgh. The Jaguars couldn’t protect a 19-point lead against a backup quarterback. They

need to rebound at home. Herbert is 14-22 straight up against teams with a winning record but 2-1 this season.

CHARGERS: 23-17

CINCINNATI (3-6) at PITTSBURGH (5-4)

Line: Steelers minus 5 1/2

The Bengals have lost two in a row despite scoring 38 points in one and 42 in the other. Cincinnati’s defense might be just what Aaron Rodgers needs to get on track after a miserable game against the Chargers. The Steelers have lost three of four, including a primetime game against the Bengals in Week 7. Under Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh is 27-11 straight up and 25-12-1 ATS vs. Cincinnati.

STEELERS: 27-20

CAROLINA (5-5) at ATLANTA (3-6)

Line: Falcons minus 3 1/2

The Panthers beat the Packers at Lambeau Field but lost to the Saints. Their passing game has struggled and questions about Bryce Young persist. The Falcons have lost four in a row since beating Buffalo, and Michael Penix Jr. has been inconsistent. Carolina routed Atlanta 30-0 in Week 3. The Panthers have never won three consecutive games both straight up and ATS against the Falcons.

FALCONS: 24-16

TAMPA BAY (6-3) at BUFFALO (6-3)

Line: Bills minus 5 1/2

The Buccaneers are missing several injured playmakers on offense and the defense is susceptible to allowing big plays. It’s possible they could get running back Bucky Irving back to face the league’s third-worst run defense. Josh Allen and the Bills are coming off a stunning lopsided loss to Miami one week after beating Kansas City. With Baker Mayfield, the Bucs are 13-4 ATS in a game after a loss.

BILLS: 27-23

SAN FRANCISCO (6-4) at ARIZONA (3-6)

Line: 49ers minus 2 1/2

With Mac Jones or Brock Purdy at quarterback, the 49ers have to rely on their offense featuring Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle because their defense has been depleted by injuries. Jacoby Brissett gets another start for the Cardinals. He could target Trey McBride 20 times in this one with Marvin Harrison Jr. out. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan is 8-9 against Arizona.

49ERS: 27-20

SEATTLE (7-2) at LOS ANGELES RAMS (7-2)

Line: Rams minus 3 Both teams are also 7-2

ATS this season. It’s Sam Darnold’s biggest game since losing consecutive must-win games last season with Minnesota, including a playoff loss to the Rams. Seattle is one of the league’s most well-balanced teams. The Seahawks are 11-1 on the road under coach Mike Macdonald. Matthew Stafford is having a spectacular season for the Rams, whose only two losses came on the final play.

RAMS: 24-20

BALTIMORE (4-5) at CLEVELAND (2-7)

Line: Ravens minus 8 Lamar Jackson is back, the Ravens have won three in a row and they’re aiming to take over the AFC North from Pittsburgh. But they have to take care of business against lesser opponents before they face the Steelers in Week 14.

The Browns are sticking with rookie Dillon Gabriel at QB. Deshaun Watson, if healthy, might get a chance before Shedeur Sanders. Jackson is 21-5 against Cleveland. The Browns are 11-22 ATS vs, division opponents under coach Kevin Stefanski.

RAVENS: 30-13

KANSAS CITY (5-4) at DENVER (8-2)

Line: Chiefs minus 4

Despite being the AFC’s current 8th seed, the Chiefs are favorites to win the Super Bowl and this week on the road. Patrick Mahomes has Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown to go along

with Travis Kelce. Denver’s dominant defense presents a tough challenge. The Broncos have struggled on offense behind Bo Nix’s inconsistency. The Chiefs are coming off a bye. Coach Andy Reid is 22-4 after a bye in the regular season, including 6-1 with Mahomes.

CHIEFS: 24-18

DETROIT (6-3) at PHILADELPHIA (7-2)

Line: Eagles minus 2 1/2

Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties for the Lions and the offense was dynamic again. Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown vs. Philadelphia’s talented defense is going to be an excellent matchup. The Eagles will need their offense to step up against Detroit. Jalen Hurts has made plays when challenged.

A.J. Brown has to be more involved in the passing game. Saquon Barkley needs more open lanes. Campbell and Goff are 13-3 in prime-time games. All three losses came as underdogs.

EAGLES: 27-23

DALLAS (3-5-1) at LAS VEGAS (2-7) Line: Cowboys minus 3 1/2

It’ll be an emotional night for the Cowboys in their first game since defensive tackle Marshawn Kneeland died. DT Quinnen Williams and LB Logan Wilson will make their debut for Dallas. Dak Prescott is 25-6 in prime-time games and the Cowboys are 18-12-1 ATS in those games. The Raiders played Denver tough in a 10-7 loss. Ashton Jeanty could get going against the league’s fifth-worst run defense.

COWBOYS: 27-20

Last week: Straight up: 10-4. Against spread: 8-6. Overall: Straight up: 10642-1. Against spread: 77-71-1. Prime-time: Straight up: 20-14-1. Against spread: 15-20.

Best Bet: Straight up: 8-2. Against spread: 7-3. Upset Special: Straight up: 7-3. Against spread: 7-3.

UB Mingoes men destroy Taxmen in homecoming win

THE University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s basketball team put on a show for their fans as they handled the Customs Department Taxmen 99-63 in their homecoming victory at the Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium on Friday.

Terrance Higgs played like a man possessed as he finished with a gamehigh 30 points and nine rebounds. Kevaro Russell had 16 points while Jerehemiah Miller and Shemeco Albury scored 14 and 12 points respectively. Alex Minus got 11 points off the bench.

“We came out strong offensively. We attacked them and gave them no breathing room,” Higgs said. “Our plan for the homecoming game was to come out on their neck and get our other guys to get more playing time and get everyone on the court.”

By time the fourth quarter rolled around, UB was up 67-51 and looked comfortable. The fourth quarter saw Higgs, Russell and Miller getting up for some

rim rockers as the crowd got more involved. They won that quarter 32-12 to guide their squad to victory.

“The second half was more of a connection with the starters,” Higgs said.

“It only takes one person to get going – if I get going everyone feeds off that energy and all of us just keeps going.”

UB got off to a strong start in the first quarter when Higgs connected from deep to cap off a 20-0 run with 4:15 left in the first quarter. They led 22-2 and comfortably led 25-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter had UB keeping the intensity up by not allowing the Taxmen to come within seven points. Higgs put UB up 42-29 with 37 seconds left in the first half that ended 44-30.

The Taxmen were led by Warren Miller who had 18 points and nine rebounds.

UB travels to South Florida to get their International Tour underway on Friday, November 14 and Saturday, November 15 against United International College.
