Masters bring home track and field medals

HALF-miler Michael

Armbrister and long jumper Natasha “Downtown” Brown continued the success in track and field for The Bahamas at the Mexico North, Central American and Caribbean Masters Championships over the weekend.

The NCCMA Masters Championships was a part of the World Masters Athletics' series and was held in Mexico City, Mexico.

It was the first event for the year that both Armbrister and Brown competed in.

Armbrister, who heads a five-member team that normally represents The Bahamas at the masters competition, competed in three events and came out with a pair of silver and a bronze medal.

Competing in the 65-age group, Armbrister opened up with third place in the 800 metres in a time of two minutes and 43 seconds. He followed that with a silver in the 400m in 1:01 and he cleared 15-feet, 7 1/2-inches or 4.75 metres in the long jump for his other silver.

Armbrister said the competition was extremely tough, especially in the jumps where Brian Hankerson, the American masters record holder, doubled up as the champion in both

the long and triple jumps. Hankerson beat out fellow American world record holder Willie Banks in the triple jump.

"I first jumped against Hankerson at the US Indoor Nationals in 2011 and it was the same results," Armbrister said. "But I was happy to come out with the silver.

"I spoke to Willie, who now lives in California and he's excited about us doing something here in The Bahamas for the masters in the future. So it was good for us with a small team to come out with the medals we won."

Brown, competing in the women's 55-60 long jump, soared to third place with her best leap of 11-1 1/2 (3.39m) while completing just one of the four attempts.

"I was very proud of myself, especially with this being the first time that I was at the event for the full time," Brown said.

"The last couple of times I got there late or I was a little sick.

"This time, the training I went under gave me a chance to position myself to be able to compete. This was a very good indication for me to see where I was. I was healthy enough to compete, even though my toes were very cold."

While the goal was to win the gold, Brown said

MICHAEL Armbrister, far right, shares a special moment with some of his rivals at the at the Mexico North, Central American and Caribbean Masters Championships.

she wanted to demonstrate to others that they can age gracefully and still compete competitively.

"I just wanted to get out there and do something that I've done for so long and still be able to compete healthy was good for me," said the Bahamian former long jump sensation. "So as I continue to age and my body shows up for me, I will

continue to do it until I'm not able to do it."

Brown, the first Bahamian female to win her professional card as a fitness competitor, said her aim now is to develop more persons to join her in fitness training so that they can develop the future generation of competitors to carry on the tradition. While she's not competing at the pro level, she said she wants to get more people involved in fitness, which helps to develop athletes in all sports played in the country and to help to eliminate obesity among Bahamians in general.

Armbrister, a naturopathic therapist, is currently working with Red-Line Athletics Track Club as an assistant coach.

Devynne Charlton earns the Prime Minister’s Award for National Pride

Armbrister is now gearing up for the final event on the calendar for the year next month at the Gainesville Florida Senior Games, considered the senior Olympics for competitors 50-and-over. He is expected to be joined by Dr Brian Humblestone, who will be competing in his first event for the year.

DEVYNNE Charlton won the Prime Minister’s Award for National Pride at the 2025 National Sports Awards, held at Sandals Royal Bahamian, Cable Beach, on November 8.   Rounding out the top three awards were Minister of Sports Award winner Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm Jr and Tourism Impact Award winner Valdez “VJ” Edgecombe.  Among senior government officials taking part in the awards ceremony as presenters were cabinet ministers, Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training Glenys Hanna-Martin, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg, Minister of State with Responsibility for Disaster Risk Management Leon Lundy and Minister of State for the Environment Zane Lightbourne.    Photo: Eric Rose/BIS

THE defending champions Queen’s College Comets soared past the St. Augustine’s College Big Red Machine 22-12 in game one of the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools Senior Girls’ Softball Championships yesterday. The championships are underway at the Freedom Farm baseball fields.

SEE MORE PHOTOS IN THURSDAY SPORTS

The game began competitively as both teams traded runs through the first and second innings. At the top of the third, QC held a slim 14-11 lead. However, the game quickly turned more in favour of the Comets as a series of unwanted walks from SAC's closing pitcher and multiple errors by SAC's defence allowed QC to pile on eight additional runs. The surge forced the mercy rule to end the game at the bottom of the third

inning, sealing the 22-12 win for the Comets.

Queen’s College showcased strong plate patience throughout its lineup and consistency in loaded bases against SAC's defencepaired with the Comets' aggressive running created too many opportunities for the Big Red Machine to contain.

Said Andranique Lamar, the Comets' shortstop and closing pitcher: “We know that SAC isn’t really a big team to us, we came into this championship knowing

that we came to get it all so we hit like we wanted it all.”

Commenting on the mindset of the team when the game was within two runs, she said: “It was nothing that we couldn’t handle because we know that we have the ability to win, we practiced for this, we came out here to win this because we wanted to defend our titles.”

Lamar promised big going into game two.

“The mindset is going to stay the same, we coming

here on Thursday to defend our title, we coming here to score at least 15 runs in the first inning and we ending it in three innings again.”

In the girls' junior division, St. Augustine’s College cruised past Queen’s College for the game one victory.  Game two of both the senior and junior girls' championships will be played on Thursday at the Freedom Farm baseball fields, where the Comets are looking to close out the series.

Game 1 of BAISS Senior Boys’ Baseball Championship to be replayed in full today

jburrows@tribunemedia.net

GAME one of the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools Senior Boys’ Baseball Championship between the Queen’s College Comets and St. Augustine’s College Big Red Machine was stopped due to heavy rainfall on Monday evening at the Andre Rodgers National Stadium.

The game was tied 1-1 through the first two innings. The Comets broke the tie at the top of the third with four unanswered runs to take a 5-1 lead over the Big Red Machine. However, just as QC started to build momentum, the weather shifted.

As the rain intensified and field conditions deteriorated, the brief delay was upgraded to a stoppage as the umpires made the decision to halt the game for player safety and field preservation.

The game will be replayed in full on Wednesday, November 12, at the same venue.

Masters track and field athletes win medals

HALF-miler Michael Armbrister and long jumper Natasha “Downtown” Brown continued the success in track and field for The Bahamas at the Mexico North, Central American and Caribbean Masters Championships over the weekend. The NCCMA Masters Championships was a part of the World Masters Athletics’ series and was held in Mexico City, Mexico.

It was the first event for the year that both Armbrister and Brown competed in.

Carlos Alcaraz beats Taylor Fritz

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz is one win away from securing the year-ending No. 1 ranking.

Alcaraz rallied past Taylor Fritz 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-3 yesterday at the ATP Finals and now needs to either win his final group match against Lorenzo Musetti or an eventual semifinal to finish a year No. 1 for the second time in his career.

“I’m trying not to think about it, to be honest,” Alcaraz said.

“But it’s really difficult, not to think about the No. 1 spot.”

Alcaraz, who improved to 2-0 at the season-ending event for the top eight players, could seal a spot in the semifinals if Alex de Minaur beats Musetti later.

If Alcaraz doesn’t win another match and Jannik Sinner goes undefeated to defend his title, Sinner will finish No. 1.

Alcaraz produced 47 winners to Fritz’s 38 and

managed to come back from a set down despite 14 aces from his American opponent.

“It was (a) really, really difficult match,” Alcaraz said. “Really demanding physically. It was really tight. I saved really difficult and important moments during the match, which I’m really proud of and really happy about it to show a really good tennis when it matters.”

Fritz had chances to break Alcaraz’s serve early in the second set.

“I just wasn’t clinical enough in finishing some points on some really big points,” Fritz said.

“The first two sets I think I did an incredible job serving and returning. I gave myself all the chances I could possibly ask for the first two sets,” Fritz added.

“My opportunity to win that match was in the second set, and I didn’t take it. I had the chances.”

De

0-1.

The top two finishers in each group advance to the semifinals. Sinner leads his group after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in his opener on Monday.

Fritz's knee Fritz was bothered by knee tendinitis in the third set.

“It gets a little bit tough to bend my knee on my serve once we get that late into the match,” Fritz said.

“My knee is completely cooked. I’ve had tendinitis all year long,” Fritz added.

“I’ve really struggled to play back-to-back days without it flaring up. … I started feeling it towards the end of the first set, but it didn’t really affect me until the third set. It just got to the point where I was really struggling to bend my back leg on my serve, step into backhands, load the leg, my right leg, for an open-stance forehand.”

Alcaraz now tops the Jimmy Connors group ahead of Fritz, who is 1-1.

NEXT GIANTS COACH WILL HAVE JAXSON DART AND TALENTED PLAYMAKERS TO BUILD AROUND HIM

THE New York Giants seem to have a franchise quarterback and playmakers to build around him. They just need a coach to lead them.

Brian Daboll became the second head coach fired this season, meaning the Giants (2-8) will join the Tennessee Titans in getting a head start in the search.

Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka gets an eight-game audition as interim coach and a strong finish would increase his chances.

There will be a surplus of candidates for an attractive job. The new coach will

inherit rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo. Dart has shown his potential. Nabers and Skattebo can be stars, though both will be returning from major injuries. Three of New York’s last four hires were first-time head coaches, so the organisation could be looking for someone with experience.

• Here are six possible successors to Daboll: Lane Kiffin He’s an obvious choice considering he coached Dart at Mississippi. Kiffin was 5-15 as head coach of the Raiders in 2007-08. He is 114-53 in college with

Tennessee, Southern California, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss. Kiffin has said he has no interest in leaving his job.

Bill Belichick A long shot. He has history with the Giants, winning two Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach. Belichick will be 74 when next season starts, but his age isn’t the issue. His record without Tom Brady is the problem. They won six Super Bowls together in New England. But Belichick is only 84-103 without Brady, though he led the Cleveland Browns to a playoff win in his first stint as an NFL head coach. Belichick is 4-5 at North Carolina and

would need a buyout to leave. He’d likely want full control and the Giants are planning to keep general manager Joe Schoen.

Mike McCarthy

He led Green Bay to a Super Bowl title with Aaron Rodgers in 2010 and has a record of 174112-2 in 18 seasons with the Packers and Cowboys. McCarthy led Dallas to three straight 12-win seasons before losing his job after going 7-10 last season. He’s familiar with the NFC East, has worked well with young quarterbacks and is a winner.

Doug Pederson

Another Super Bowl champion, this one guided

Philadelphia to the franchise's first title with a backup quarterback beating Brady and Belichick. Pederson led the Eagles and Jaguars to five winning seasons, four playoff appearances and is 5-3 in the playoffs. He helped develop Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate in his second season in 2017.

Klint Kubiak He’s a rising young offensive coordinator. Kubiak is having success with Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks.

Seattle’s offence is ninth in total yards.

Kubiak’s zone-blocking scheme can elevate New York’s run game and he’s shown he can develop QBs. Kubiak is the son of former NFL QB and head coach Gary Kubiak, who led Denver to a Super Bowl championship.

On Football analyses the biggest topics in the NFL from week to week.

Vance Joseph He’s another former head coach who is having more success as a defensive coordinator in Denver. Joseph was 11-21 with the Broncos in 2017-18. He returned to Denver to join Sean Payton’s staff in 2023 and his defence has been top 10 in yards the past two years and third in scoring both seasons.

NFL Week 10: Sloppy play, penalties, and drops reign

DENVER (AP) — Election Day has come and gone. So has the trade deadline. The autumn leaves are mostly on the ground. The days are shorter, the nights longer. And yet here we are watching sloppy football across the NFL.

Week 10 looked a lot like Week 1, or even the preseason tilts chock full of NFL wannabes who may have made the play but not the cut. The slate started with a Thursday night snoozer in which both the reeling Las Vegas Raiders (2-7) and the surging Denver Broncos (8-2) had more penalties (11) than first downs (10).

The Broncos prevailed 10-7 — the same score the Eagles beat the Packers on Monday night to wrap up the wacky week — despite going three-and-out eight times thanks to a bevy of bad throws, dropped passes and, yes, yellow flags.

On Sunday, the Chicago Bears, who are accustomed to playing in wet, windy weather, dropped six of Caleb Williams’ passes in their 24-20 comeback against the New York

Giants that cost Brian Daboll his job. And in their 27-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Minnesota Vikings were whistled for a whopping eight false starts — at home, where these things generally don’t happen.

Except that it’s the NFL in 2025: cockeyed, confusing and chaotic.

The Patriots are atop the AFC East this late in the year for the first time since Tom Brady was throwing darts and dunks to Gronk instead of arrows and flowers from the broadcast booth and Bill Belichick was steamrolling NFL opponents instead of getting crushed in college.

The Colts are chasing their first AFC South title since Andrew Luck was QB in 2014, and the Broncos are alone atop the AFC West for the first time since 2015 when they won their last Super Bowl title.

The Seahawks are tied with the Rams at 7-2 atop the NFC West. They haven’t won their division since 2020 before Russell Wilson was traded and benched in Denver, chased out of Pittsburgh and demoted in New York. The Broncos have been flagged 101 times this

season, second only to Jacksonville's 102. Both teams have 83 penalties against them that were accepted. Seventeen by Denver were declined and one was offsetting.

“Certainly, it's a point of emphasis,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said.

Yet, the Broncos are tied with New England and Indianapolis at 8-2 for the best record in the league in this

topsy-turvy season in which we're into November and the Kansas City Chiefs, winners of nine straight AFC West crowns, five of the last six AFC championships and three Super Bowls, are on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

the Carolina Panthers at Seattle on Sept. 24, 2023, according to Sportradar.

Right tackle Brian O’Neill was flagged three times. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy and star receiver Justin Jefferson also were penalised.

The quarterback and his offensive line struggled with snap counts, cadence and presnap adjustments, especially in the fourth quarter, when the Vikings had three false starts in the final 10 minutes.

Running back Aaron Jones said some Ravens defenders seized on the confusion by barking “Hut!” when McCarthy changed the play call or protection. Still, the friendly crowd at U.S. Bank Stadium should not have made it that problematic, he said.

“That’s what they get paid to do,” Jones said.

“Whatever was unearthed today needs to be corrected immediately,” coach Kevin O’Connell said after the Vikings’ eight false starts among 13 flags short circuited their comeback hopes against the Ravens

The eight false-start penalties also were the most in a game by any team since

The Vikings' eight falsestart penalties against Baltimore were the most by a home team since the Buffalo Bills had nine against Cleveland on October 11, 2009, according to Sportradar.

“We’ve just got to lock in, especially when we’re playing at home.”

The Vikings, 14-3 in the regular season a year ago, fell to 4-5. “It’s going to be tough to win games like that,” Jefferson said. “Go back to work and do the things that allow us to move forward, not backward.”

At five yards a pop.
